Radio broadcasts are a proven educational tool and remain an important communications medium in the developing world. However, the lack of electricity and the availability and cost of batteries limit radio access. Not only can signal strength in remote areas be weak, but radio broadcasts rely on the listeners being present at the time of broadcast or the message is lost. The Lifeplayer MP3 is the first tool engineered specifically for the humanitarian sector to overcome these barriers and is equally valuable for emergencies or development.
Lifeplayer MP3 A rugged solar and wind up media player, radio and charger The unrivaled digital Lifeplayer MP3 is power independent, combining multi-band radio, media player and recorder. The Lifeplayer MP3 enables anytime, anywhere learning through a range of technologies to inform, educate and deliver content in ways never before possible. We carefully thought through the design and feature set in collaboration with end-users to ensure that the Lifeplayer would be fit-for-purpose and long lasting. In addition to receiving FM/AM/SW radio broadcasts, the Lifeplayer can store up to an amazing 64GB of content. The media player allows listeners to play, pause, and replay as needed until they fully understand the educational material. Individuals or communities can record their own content via an integrated microphone onto a standard microSD™ data card. The Lifeplayer MP3 can also record radio programs for listening at a later time. Content can be delivered to and from the Lifeplayer MP3 in a variety of ways: Audio content can be pre-loaded at the factory as well as loaded locally at any time. Programs can be recorded from the radio onto a microSD™ card. Users can create their own content using an integrated microphone. This content can be played on the Lifeplayer or uploaded onto a mobile phone or a computer via a microSD™ card. Mobile phone and Internet downloads and uploads from a microSD™ card makes a huge array of content available as never before. The Lifeplayer MP3 comes with a suite of power options: solar, a fail-safe hand crank, or external DC input for charging from a wall socket or car battery. The solar panel is wired to the radio and secured to the top with a magnet. It can be charged when the solar panel is connected to the radio or wirelessly.
The upgraded solar panel includes high temperature rechargeable batteries that add extra battery storage capacity. On start-up, the LCD screen can display an organization's logo and the device can be pre-tuned to a particular radio station to ensure that the intended programming is reaching listeners. Alternatively, each time the Lifeplayer MP3 is turned on, it can start with an informative message about health, the environment, financial literacy, or farming, a local song or even a sponsor's jingle. Given the large size of many distance education classes and community groups sound clarity and volume are essential. The Lifeplayer MP3 has an excellent internal speaker, and the volume can be further boosted by using the socket to plug in an additional speaker. A flexible wire antenna housed in the carrier handle improves radio reception. The user interface is straightforward, making it easy to use even by those unfamiliar with new technologies. The Lifeplayer MP3 has only two knobs, one for tuning the radio and operating the media player, and the other for switching it on/off and controlling volume. There's also a button to record either voice from the built-in microphone or radio programs. The Lifeplayer MP3 also introduces a menu of digital enhancements, as well as unique monitoring and evaluation tools. The device can gather basic information on how it is used by logging data on listening patterns and device usage. This data will provide previously unavailable insight that will assist in determining the effectiveness of each program, enabling project staff to quickly change course, if needed, to ensure project goals are achieved. The Lifeplayer MP3 is available for educational and humanitarian initiatives and is not for commercial sale.
