1.2 Installation
!
CAUTION
CAUTION! Do not supply power until all connections are made in accordance with requirements specified in local electrical codes. Protect this equipment with an approved fuse or breaker sufficiently rated to interrupt power at –48 Vdc at 2 amps, or as specified on the device.
1.2.1 Tools and Equipment You need only standard tools. Use listed components (UL-recognized, CSA, ETL, TUV agency) and crimping tools.
1.2.2 Installing the Mounting Brackets The DSX-1 Rear Cross-Connect Panel comes in both 19" (48.3 cm) and 23" (58.4 cm) versions with universal mounting brackets for EIA and WECO equipment racks. Some 19" panels have reversible mounting brackets which allow them to be mounted in 23" racks. To reverse the bracket, 1. Remove the screws that hold it to the panel. 2. Turn the bracket so that its narrow edge is against the panel and the screw holes align. 3. Reinsert the screws and tighten. You can mount the DSX-1/1C/2 flush or 4 to 5 inches (10.2 to 12.7 cm) in front of the equipment rack. If you are mounting the panel in this extended position, reposition the mounting brackets before installing the panel.
1.2.3 Installing the Panel 1. Align the mounting holes with the holes in the relay rack, then install and tighten all four mounting screws (two on each side). Insert star washers between the screw head and the mounting bracket to insure grounding. 2. Ground the rear of the chassis to the rack using the grounding stud and 14-AWG stranded, tinned wire. 3. Connect the chassis ground (C.GND) and shield ground (S.GRND) according to standard central office practice. Telect recommends connecting the shield ground at the source equipment end only—not at the DSX. 4. Connect fused –48 Vdc office battery and battery return to the appropriate terminals on the panel. Fuse in accordance with the maximum rated current listed on the panel. Telect recommends a minimum of 24-AWG wire. 5.If the Panel has Wire-Wrap Pins: a. Identify the I/O field of wire-wrap pins—the field that is covered and without the TRCR (or TL) labeled pins. b. Remove the cover. c. Remove the cable jacket. d. Connect the IN wires to the IN pins and the OUT wires to the OUT pins. e. Reinstall the cover. If the Panel is Connectorized: Plug connectorized cables into the connectors.
1.3 Making a Cross-Connect 1. Select two jacks for cross-connecting. 2. Using jumper wire: a. Connect T and R OUT of the first jack to T and R IN of the second jack. b. Connect T and R IN of the first jack to T and R OUT of the second jack. c. Connect TRCR to TRCR (or TL to TL). 3. Verify DSX Jack Pairs: Insert a plug into the monitor of the first jack. The tracer lamps of both jacks flash for about 30 seconds, and then light steadily. 4. Record the cross-connect on the designation strip.
