Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Custodian Veterans Home at Union Grove December 2016 CUSTODIAN Position Summary Under general supervision of the Custodial Services Program Supervisor this position is responsible for the cleanliness of patient/non-patient care areas at the Wisconsin Veterans Home-Union Grove. Duties include dusting; wet washing and mopping; operating power equipment to maintain floor surfaces; maintaining equipment; moving furniture; and performance of limited grounds and facilities maintenance. Time% Goals and Worker Activities 60% A. Cleaning and Sanitizing of Building Areas Using Proper Chemicals, Cleaning Techniques, and Safety Procedures A1. Clean and sanitize toilets, urinals, sinks, fixtures, dispensers, and drinking fountains. A2. Refill toilet paper, paper towel, hand sanitizer and soap dispensers. A3. Remove trash, recyclables and/or medical waste and properly dispose. A4. Mix cleaning chemicals. A5. Clean and sanitize walls, doors, mirrors, windows, screens, blinds, light fixtures, vents, grills, fans and other surfaces. A6. Clean/sanitize and/or dust furniture. A7. Communicate with supervisors and staff to obtain information on work orders. 25% B. Maintenance of Facility Floor Surfaces B1. Clean and sanitize floors by sweeping/dust mopping and wet mopping. B2. Use automatic power sweeper and floor scrubber to clean floors. B3. Spray buff and burnish floors using powered equipment. B4. Scrub, strip, and refinish floors using powered equipment such as rotary floor machine, auto scrubber and wet vacuums. B5. Shampoo carpets using power equipment. B6. Display warning signs when using equipment that may create wet or slippery floor conditions. 5% C. Maintenance of Cleaning Equipment, Chemicals, and Supplies C1. Clean, maintain, and properly store manual and power equipment. C2. Keep all equipment safely behind locked doors when not in use. C3. Ensure safety procedures are used with all custodial chemicals and equipment, including personal protective equipment (e.g. gloves, goggles, masks, etc.). 5% D. Provision of Limited Grounds and Facilities Maintenance D1. Maintain cleanliness of building entrances and dumpster area. D2. Transport institutional furniture, equipment, supplies, and donated properties. D4. Report signs of a pest control problem. 5% E. Performance of Miscellaneous Duties E1. Enter and maintain sanitation and work records and requests. E2. Learn and follow facility safety and sanitation practices. E3. Attend meetings, mandatory in-service training, and other training as directed. E4. Report observed changes in members’ behavior, or special needs to appropriate staff. E5. Perform other duties as assigned. Special Requirements Must be able to pass a caregiver background check. Environmental Conditions Conditions are those normally found in a long term health care facility. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 1. Knowledge of basic floor care and maintenance 2. Knowledge of basic safety precautions in maintenance of facilities 3. Ability to use various cleaning agents 4. Ability to use personal protective equipment (PPE) 5. Knowledge of institutional sanitation and cleaning methods 6. Knowledge of policies and practices regarding patient privacy, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) 7. Knowledge of proper methods, materials and equipment for building cleaning and sanitizing 8. Knowledge of safe lifting techniques 9. Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheet/Safety Data Sheet 10. Skill in use of powered cleaning equipment such as a floor scrubber or rotary floor machine 11. Skill in written and verbal communication 12. Ability to react appropriately to hazards or changes to conditions in the work environment (e.g., wet floors, broken glass, person in need of assistance, etc.) 13. Ability to maintain a variety of cleaning and basic building maintenance equipment 14. Ability to climb, reach, bend, and perform sustained physical activity 15. Ability to perform heavy work, including occasionally exerting an excess of 100 pounds of force to move objects 16. Ability to maintain records and work orders 17. Ability to read and follow work instructions and schedules, warning signs and instructions for equipment operation 1
