CHILDREN’S SAFETY ISSUES AUGUST 2010 10. SOFT BEDDING (infants) HAZARD Infants placed on soft bedding may increase the risk factor of suffocation or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). DEFINITION Any item manufactured for babies or intended to be used in a baby crib for infants under 12 months. THIS INCLUDES, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO comforters, quilts, sheepskins, pillows or soft toys. NORDSTROM POLICY Any Soft Bedding, functional or decorative, must have specific warning labels informing customer about the hazard, for infant’s ages 12 months and under. COMFORTERS, QUILTS AND SHEEPSKINS Nordstrom Policy a. Any Comforter, Quilt or sheepskin packaged or unpackaged must bear a label with the heading “SAFE BEDDING PRACTICE FOR INFANTS” located in a conspicuous location at the point of sale. The label must also bear the following: (see example)  Place baby on his/her back on a firm tight-fitting mattress in a crib that meets current safety standards.  Remove pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, stuffed toys, and other soft products from the crib.  Consider using a sleeper or other sleep clothing as an alternative to blankets with no other covering.  If using a blanket, put baby with feet at foot of the crib. Tuck a thin blanket around the crib mattress, reaching only as far as the baby’s chest.  Make sure your baby’s head remains uncovered during sleep.  Do not place baby on a waterbed, sofa, soft mattress, pillow, or other soft surface. b. The label should measure at least 4 6/8 inches (12 cm) by 2 6/8 (7 cm) and have black text in at least 10 point Arial or Helvetica. Each product shall have a permanents conspicuous label with the Registered Identification Number (RN). b. Each fitted sheet must be able to snugly fit a mattress that measures at least 27 ¼ inches (69 cm) by 51 5/8 inches (131 cm) with a thickness not exceeding 6 inches (15 cm). c. A permanent conspicuous label shall be on each fitted sheet. The label shall be in the ANSI format, which would include a delineated signal word panel containing the safety alert symbol before the signal word and a contrasting background. The label shall begin with the word “WARNING,” the letters of which shall not be less than 0.2 in. (5 mm) high. The remaining text shall be in letters not less than 0.1 in (2.5 mm) high. The label must state; “Prevent possible strangulation or entanglement. Never use crib sheet unless it fits securely on crib mattress.” For example: Prevent possible strangulation or entanglement. If ribbons, strings, or ties can tangle from a loop, then the perimeter of the loop shall not exceed 14 in. (360 mm) under a force of 5 lbf (22N). All Ribbons, strings and ties other than bumper guards and headboard that might be used in a crib shall not exceed 7 in. (180mm) under a force of 5 lbf (22N). b. The label shall begin with the word “WARNING,” the letters of which shall not be less than 0.2 in. (5 mm) high. The remaining text shall be in letters not less than 0.1 in (2.5 mm) high. The label must state; “To prevent entanglement or strangulation, position ties to outside of crib and be sure they are secure. PLUSH TOYS Nordstrom Policy  Must meet minimum performance requirement on NPS-31 To obtain the latest information on soft bedding regulations contact the NPG QA or visit the CPSC web site at http://www.cpsc.gov Party Responsible  Nordstrom Product Group Kids Brand and/or Technical Design Team are responsible for Design and Spec Pack that conforms to Nordstrom’s Policies.  Supplier is responsible for implementing the applicable production standards  Supplier/Agent is responsible for submitting testing to a Nordstrom-approved lab.  Agent QC/Direct Supplier is responsible for auditing in-line and final inspections making sure the garments conform to Nordstrom’s policies.  Nordstrom Product Group, Product Integrity is responsible for keeping testing documents for 5 years.
