Case Study: Barcelona City Hall SM24-1000SFP-AH MULTI-SERVICE INFRASTRUCTURE VIA IP Industry Barcelona City Hall was searching for innovative methods to implement new technologies and improve services for residents. In order to complete this project, the city council relied on engineering solutions and support provided by fiber networking experts Anixter Spain and Transition Networks and installed a new traffic light control system, based on a powerful multi-service network. Municipality Application Aggregation Node Business Challenge Barcelona City Hall had a goal to completely overhaul the existing communication infrastructure and replace it with a versatile, reliable and cost-effective solution. The project removed copper wiring in favor of implementing fiber optic rings connected to a L3 central ring at the city hall. The new traffic light control system was also completed during this project, leveraging civil work being carried out in the city at the same time. Provide traffic control through cameras and access points. Provide residents with network access to city services and WiFi access. Solution Provides a flexible platform to enable aggregation of camera and access point traffic through an easy-to-maintain platform with advanced management and software features Benefits Decision-makers on the Barcelona City Council required that the traffic light control project use IP protocols, so switches were installed connecting regulators for all traffic lights throughout the city. Partnering to provide this solution are Transition Networks, a US-based network device manufacturer, and Anixter Spain, a Transition Networks distributor, which also provided engineering and technical support throughout the project. • QoS • VLANS • Link Aggregation • Ring Protection • IGMP • Link & Service OAM • SSL/SSH & SNMP v1,2,3 • Redundant power • Competitively priced “ Barcelona City Hall relied on engineering solutions and support from Anixter Spain and Transition Networks to install a powerful multi-service network and improve services for residents. —Mar Rigaud, Anixter Spain Marketing In addition to a citywide W iFi network providing public access, Barcelona City Hall has 118 miles of fiber optic cable connecting 128 municipal buildings through approximately 10,000 installed devices. The W iFi mesh network also connects municipal services and sensor networks to monitor public areas, offering 35% coverage through 470 separate nodes. ” YOUR NETWORK. OUR CONNECTION. After the installation of switches at intersections was complete, a new traffic Cabinet Installation camera system was installed creating a true multi-service network for both traffic light control and vehicular traffic surveillance. This new multi-service network allows camera support for traffic control, such as detecting traffic violations and using IP “posts” in order to control vehicle access to certain city streets. As an added benefit to Barcelona residents, the new network, using Transition Networks’ PoE products, provides power and remote access to Access Points (APs) deployed throughout the city, for W iFi public Internet access. PAGE 1 Case Study: Barcelona City Hall SYSTEMS AND APPLICATIONS Transition Networks provided two types of devices, distributed by Anixter Spain, based on their implementation on remote nodes (particularly, MILSM8002TG access nodes) and aggregation nodes (SM24-1000SFP-AH). MIL-SM8002TG Industry Municipality Application Access Node Business Challenge Provide traffic control through cameras and access points. Provide residents with network access to city services and WiFi access Among other applications, this equipment provides differentiated services in traffic light control, such as bandwidth rate limiting, class of service per port (CoS); CLI switch management via control panel port or Telnet and built in web BUI interface. It also offers SNMP v1, v2c, v3 management and dual firmware updating via TFTP/FTP/X modem server. Additional features include port duplication and robust security using RADIUS/ TACACS+ authentication. This project required the installation of approximately 600 access points and 30 aggregation nodes. These access points and aggregation nodes are connected to and managed by the existing Barcelona City Hall L3 fiber optic network. Each of the units and ports (up to eight ports for a maximum of three backbone groups) have LED indicators to quickly identify current network conditions including fixed full duplex status per fiber and link pass-through status supported on PoE and USB ports. Solution QUALITY OF SERVICE Benefits W ith a quality IPv4 service based on port and label (each port is compatible with four priority queues) the equipment installed provides secure access from MAC addresses; Auto-negotiation 10/100/1000 Mbps and forced mode operation on a TP interface, in addition to bandwidth distribution, which allows network administrators to adjust the converter’s bandwidth in 64 KB-increments through SNMP management. Delivers superior management features that include port based, dynamic and static VLANs, 802.1Q VLAN tagging, GVRP with MVR, IGMP, port mirroring, port security. • QoS • VLANs • Link Aggregation • Ring Protection • IGMP • SNMP v1,2,3 • Extended Operating Temperature • Competitively Priced Transition Networks, Inc. The new Barcelona City Hall traffic control and camera system, now fully operational, provides robust quality of services, secure access for both authentication and public Internet access and strong remote network management via SNMP. From a centralized location, network administrators now have full visibility and remote monitoring capabilities which are key criteria for supporting the new Barcelona City Hall network. The new video surveillance and traffic control system is fully interoperable with any IP camera system offering real-time color video, data encryption and non-IP PTZ (Pan,Tilt,Zoom) video systems with various RS-232,RS-422 and RS-485 data interfaces. www.bcn.cat www.anixter.es www.transition.com YOUR NETWORK.
