Additional Info: Please Read Before Beginning A 3-groove water pump pulley (GM part number 3889372 (1968-70) or 3992071 (1971-74), no longer available from GM) is required for proper installation of this bracket kit. If your vehicle is not equipped with this pulley, you will need to obtain the correct pulley prior to installing this kit. The following pulleys are available from Vintage Air: Part Number: 735002 3-Groove Water Pump Pulley, 5/8” Pilot, 1 ¾” Bolt Circle Fits: 1968-70 427-454 Corvette Engines with Factory Air Part Number: 735003 3-Groove Water Pump Pulley, 3/4” Pilot, 2 ⅛” Bolt Circle Fits: 1971-74 427-454 Corvette Engines with Factory Air NOTE: With some aftermarket water pumps, it may be necessary to modify the webbing ribs to allow clearance for the pulley to spin freely (See photo below).

Preliminary Steps/Preparation
1. Remove the original compressor and brackets (discard). NOTE: The air conditioning system is under high pressure. Do not loosen any OEM fittings or remove any components until after the system has been discharged and the refrigerant recovered. Always wear eye protection when disconnecting air conditioning systems fittings. 2. Remove the top passenger side bolt from the water pump (discard). NOTE: Passenger side water pump mounting boss nominal height is 1.155” (See below). If your boss is longer or shorter, spacer modifications will be necessary to bring brackets into proper alignment.

Bracket/Compressor Installation

1. Depending on your head design, use either (2) 7/16” x 1” or (2) 3/8” x 1” bolts to attach the rear mounting bracket and rear mounting bracket spacer to the passenger side cylinder head. 2. Using a 3/8” x 3 ½” hex bolt and 3/8” flat washer, attach the compressor bracket, the front mounting bracket, and a 2.55” spacer to the threaded hole in the rear mounting bracket. 3. Insert a 3/8” x 3 ¼” hex bolt through the front mounting bracket and a 1.200” spacer, and into the open water pump bolt hole. NOTE: The distance from the machined front surface of the block to the back of the front mounting bracket should be 2.355” (See Page 4). 4. With the bracket assembly loosely attached to the engine, loosely bolt the compressor into place using (2) 3/8” x 1 ¼” bolts inserted through the left and right front compressor ears and the upper (2) holes on the compressor bracket, along with a 3/8” x 1 ½” bolt inserted through the bottom front compressor ear and the remaining hole in the compressor and front mounting brackets. Thread (3) 3/8” locknuts onto the (3) bolts. 5. Insert a 3/8” x 1 ¼” bolt through the bottom rear compressor ear and the remaining hole in the rear bracket, and into a 3/8” locknut. Do not tighten fully. 6. Rotate the compressor in and out through the full travel distance of the adjustment slot to verify there are no obstructions and/or binding. Then tighten all bolts on the compressor/bracket assembly, EXCEPT the bottom front ear bolt and the belt adjustment bolt. These will be tightened after the belt has been installed. Threaded Hole

1. Refer to the following dimensions, and route belt as shown below. Vintage Air recommends using only Dayco, Gates or Goodyear brand reinforced V-belts with this compressor bracket kit. Compressor belt length of 47 to 48 inches is recommended.
Centerline of Front Water Pump Groove to Water Pump Flange is .756”
Machined Surface of Block
3.477” 4.227” 4.997”
Compressor Warnings
NOTE: Failure to follow these procedures will void all warranties. 1. With compressor kit installed, and belt tightened, check angle of oil plug on compressor. As shown below, oil plug must not exceed 90˚beyond vertical centerline. 2. Do not connect compressor clutch wire until system is being charged with refrigerant. Running compressor without refrigerant charge may result in compressor failure.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: ● Do not connect compressor clutch wire until system is being charged with refrigerant. Since an A/C system relies on refrigerant to circulate lubricant, running the compressor without refrigerant may destroy the compressor and void the warranty.
Oil Plug 90˚
90˚
● Proper compressor orientation is important. Sanden compressors may be rotated from vertical (oil fill plug at top) up to 90˚ in either direction (See illustration).
Completed Installation
1. When complete, your bracket kit installation should appear like the one below.
