17 Please read this guide carefully before operating the equipment MOST IMPORTANT - RISK ASSESS!!! Before you commence any work at your chosen work area, you should undertake some preliminary hazard identification and risk control precautions. Ideally more than one person should do this. This is undertaken by: 1. Physically inspecting the work site 2. Reviewing the best way/job steps required to complete the task 3. Reviewing the Safe Work Information supplied with the equipment 4. Reviewing other reference documentation and expert advice The hazard identification and control process steps are defined as: 1. Identify the Hazards (eg. 240V power drill use around wet areas) 2. Assess the Risk (multi earth paths - possible electrocution) 3. Select the Control Measure (e.g. dry the area; use an RCD; use a cordless drill etc) 4. Re-assess the Risk (risk of electrocution now negligible). This is undertaken to ensure that the risk control measures adopted have not introduced any new risks to the work area. BEFORE STARTING 1. Set up by clearing work area. Prepare for slight spillage, carpets and floors must be protected by plastic or dust sheet. 2. Place steamer on floor or stable work surface near to the area to be stripped. Remove the steam plate (push down and pull back) and lay out the steam hose and power lead. Do not plug into power supply. 3. Remove filler cap (some models have a lock down cap) and fill with clean hot or cold tap water to a maximum of 5cm(2”) from the top of the tank. Do not over fill or cover rubber safety valve located at the base of the tank filling neck. 4. Replace the filling cap ensuring a correct fit. Never force or attempt to over tighten the cap. 5. Place the steam plate face up on the floor which should be protected from condensation when steam is first produced. 6. Plug steamer into suitable power supply and connect residual current device. 7. Allow the steamer to heat the water until it turns to steam, 10 to 30 minutes. TO OPERATE 1. When steady jets of steam are produced, the steam stripper is ready to use. 2. Lift the steam plate above the steam stripper this will allow water condensed in the steam hose from the steam to run back into the water tank. 3. Hold the steam plate flat against the surface to be stripped. Start at the top and work down. A scraper may need to be used on tough paper. 4. Continue stripping until the steam stops, about 30 minutes. 5. To re-fill disconnect power supply and allow the steamer to cool down for a minimum of 2 minutes. Wallpaper Steamer HELP If the unit does not operate correctly or you are unhappy with its performance, return it to the nearest Kennards Hire Centre for exchange or phone for assistance. Do not attempt repairs yourself. Refer to your hire contract for details of our AFTER HOURS EMERGENCY NUMBER. PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE) before use and that it is not kinked or becomes kinked or flattened in use. Keep hose away from bare skin, as it can be hot. Always disconnect unit from power supply before filling with water or when not in use. Operate steamer on level surface. Do not use this unit as a step. Ensure adequate ventilation of work site. SAFETY DON’TS PROTECTIVE GLOVES Dont allow water level to expose element. SAFETY DO’S Do not operate the steamer without water. Refill tank after 30 minutes of operation. Never remove filler cap on the steam tank when the steam stripper is in operation or attempt to adjust or tighten it if steam is seen to be escaping from around the filler cap area. Disconnect from power supply, allow for a minimum of 2 minutes then check and refit cap. Always make sure you have a residual current device connected to the power supply, and make sure all connections are free from moisture. Take precautions to prevent water entering power sockets and light switches. The steam generated is extremely hot, do not use on overhead surfaces. Keep all children away whilst machine is turned on or in operation. Ensure steam hose is sound and securely fitted TO STOP 1. Disconnect unit from power supply. 2. Allow machine to cool down. 3. Remove filler cap. 4. Empty water from tank. MAINTENANCE ON SITE • During stripping, steam will be collecting in the trough at the bottom of the steam plate and condensing into water, which should be drained away from time to time. • On completion of work allow the steamer to cool completely. Remove the steam cap, turn the machine over and drain off remaining water. • Remove any paper left on steam plate and hose and clear any obstructing steam holes. Replace cap, wipe down body and replace the steam hose, cable and steam plate. HELPFUL HINTS Care should be taken to check the condition of the surface to be stripped. Should plaster on the wall be loose, it is probable that when the covering is removed the plaster or parts will come away. Check by gently tapping the wall all over, a hollow sound will indicate that the plaster is loose. In such circumstances, repairs should be made. To help speed up the stripping a perforator can be used. This will allow the steam to penetrate the surface, If paper has been painted, is vinyl or has backing, a perforator will need to be used. To save time, perforate area whilst the steamer is heating up. It is a good idea to start at the top of the wall and work across and downwards. Wait about 15 seconds, then move the steam plate across the wall to the next area slightly overlapping the area just steamed. Do not attempt to move the steamer unless the power has been disconnected and allowed to cool for at least 5 minutes. To move the steamer to another location lift by the steam plate rails only. Do not use power socket directly below area being stripped. TROUBLESHOOTING MACHINE DOES NOT HEAT UP • Check power supply. • Check residual current device has not been tripped. STEAM ESCAPING FROM FILLER CAP • Switch off and allow to cool for a minimum of 2 minutes. Using a glove and at arms length carefully remove the filler cap. Inspect the cap and filler neck for signs of damage or dirt. If problem persists, return machine to your rental centre. STEAM STOPS PREMATURELY • Steam hose or steam outlet could be blocked. Disconnect from power supply and check to see if hose is kinked or flattened. FILLER CAP ROTATES PAST ‘STOP’ POSITION. • Caution, do not use the machine. Return to your rental centre for replacement. MACHINE OVERHEATS • Check machine is on level surface. ESCAPE OF WATER/STEAM FROM BOTTOM OF MACHINE WHILST HEATING UP. • Machine has been overfilled. • Steam hose full of water. Lift hose high to allow water to run back into water tank. SPECIFICATIONS Weight - 8.9kg Size - (LxHxW) - 560mm x 220mm x 310mm Power - 240volt Tank Capacity - 8 litres On completion of stripping, the wall or ceiling surface should be washed down to remove any remaining pieces of covering.
