1701G GM Databus Interface IMPORTANT! Please read this installation guide thoroughly before installing the 1701G. Use only a high quality digital multi-meter for testing. This product connects to the vehicle’s low voltage signal wire and improper installation or testing can result in damage to the vehicle. Never use a test light or logic probe to test wires in this vehicle! The 1701G interfaces with specific GM vehicles. It converts the signals from the keyless entry, alarm, or remote start into signals that can be understood by the vehicles factory Data Bus system. This allows for interfacing with various factory options such as factory Remote start, alarm and keyless entry. This unit can be used to interface using an aftermarket keyless entry, alarm or remote start. Getting Started 1. Read manual thoroughly. 2. Make all wiring connections Prior to starting car or plugging in the 1701G module. 3. Plug in 1701G module and led will blink software version. (see version reporting on page 6) 4. Turn ignition ON, LED will blink quickly while learning the and vehicle turn solid once learned. (do not start vehicle until learning is complete). See LED diagnostics on page 4 if Led does not turn solid indicating a successful vehicle learn. 5. Make any desired feature programming changes. Wiring Guide RED (+) 12V constant power input: Connect to the battery positive terminal or another constant 12 V supply. VIOLET/WHITE RPM (Tachometer) output: Connect this wire to “Tachometer input wire” of the remote start module. BLACK (-) chassis ground connection: Connect this wire to a clean, paint free metal sheet location using a factory bolt that DOES NOT have any vehicle component grounds attached to it. NOTE - Under dash bracing and steering columns are NOT proper ground points. Use either a kick panel or firewall and scrape off the paint at the contact point. LT. GRAY (-) hood status output: Connect this wire to the (-) hood pin input of the Security/Remote Start system. GREEN/BLACK (-) arm/lock input: Connect this wire to “lock #30 common output” or negative output of the door lock harness of the security system. The “lock #87 normally open input” of the security system must be grounded. © 2006 Directed Electronics. All rights reserved. 1701G 12-06 NOTE - If the key is left in the ignition switch after ignition is OFF and the programmable feature "Prevent door locking if key is left in ignition" (Feature 4) is ON, then the 1701G module will ignore this input. WHITE/BLUE (-) remote start input: See page 8 regarding wiring for application A or B A: For an alarm or keyless entry system installation on a vehicle OEM remote start equipped already. Connect this wire to the channel 3 or Auxiliary output of the security system in order to remote start or stop the vehicle NOTE – This input can be used in this way if the programmable feature OEM Remote Start (Feature 5) is set EQUIPPED and the car is OEM Remote Start enabled (it has the remote start button on the OEM remote). This setting is used when the vehicle is OEM remote start equipped and you are using a security or keyless entry systems auxiliary channel to activate the factory remote start. In this case the (+) brown brake wire is inactive and blue/white status output wire from the 1701g is used to 'shunt' the aftermarket security systems sensors. B: For aftermarket remote start installations for vehicles NOT OEM remote start equipped. Connect this wire to “Status output” or ground while running output of the remote start module. NOTE – This input can be used this way if the programmable feature OEM Remote Start (Feature 5) is set NOT EQUIPPED. This setting is used when installing an aftermarket remote start and allows bypass to occur, allows the (+) brake output to operate and will shut the radio off after remote start has stopped and lock the doors in case the vehicle is programmed to unlock the doors upon removal. - As long as this input is active the 1701G will: - Monitor the engine (RPM) and activate RPM output on violet/white wire - Force the YELLOW ignition status output OFF - Read the external temperature and if this is less than +5C (+41F), the 1701G will activate and keep active any “cold weather” features built into the car after engine is on for 5 seconds. - During the active state of the remote start, the 1701G also detects any of the following conditions through CAN bus for activating the remote start shutdown brown + output: - Brake ON - Reverse ON - Car speed > 0 - Parking brake not On (only for manual gear box) - RPM over 2000 BLUE/BLACK (-) disarm/unlock driver’s door input: Connect this wire to “unlock #30 common output” of the door lock harness or negative unlock output of the security system. The “unlock #87 normally open input” of the security system must be grounded. BROWN/BLACK (-) panic input: Connect this wire to (-) Horn Honk output of the security system. Set the Horn Honk output to Constant, or this may be connected to an auxiliary channel to activate OEM panic. © 2006 Directed Electronics. All rights reserved. N1701G 12-06 LT. BLUE (-) disarm/unlock all doors input: Connect this wire to “(-) second unlock” of the keyless entry/security/remote start system. RED/WHITE (-) Glass/hatch/trunk release or power lift gate open/close (depending on model): Connect this wire to “(-) Channel 2 output” or an auxiliary output of the security system. If the vehicle is equipped with a power liftgate or glass, the first time you activate red/white input to release it will take 5-6 seconds for the module to 'learn' if the vehicle is equipped with a power lift gate or glass release and it will activate the power lift gate if equipped and if not it will operate the glass release. NOTE - After a valid activation of this input, the 1701G will artificially activate the “Glass/hatch/ trunk Status Output” dark blue wire in order to prevent the security system from triggering, in case that the trunk is not automatically released or opened by the user. This output will remain active as long as the glass/hatch/trunk remains opened. If the glass/hatch/trunk is not opened this output will remain active a predefined time (30 seconds), to simulate the factory auto-relock future, or until a disarm/unlock or arm/lock input is received. This only occurs while armed/locked. LT. BROWN (+) remote start shutdown output: Connect this wire to a positive shutdown brake input of the remote start module. NOTE: This output is ONLY active when feature #5 is set to OEM REMOTE START NOT EQUIPPED and negative status input is active. This is the feature used when adding an aftermarket remote start system. This wire is not used if the vehicle is OEM remote start equipped. BLUE/WHITE (-) remote start status output: This wire is ONLY used if the vehicle is OEM remote start equipped while installing a security system. Connect this wire to “(-) instant trigger input (trunk input/shunt) Zone 1” of a Directed security system through a diode (see diagram A on page 8) in order to bypass the auxiliary sensors during an active remote start. Set the channel 3 of the security system as REMOTE START REPORTING if the system is a directed system and has this as a programming option for CH3. NOTE – This output can be used this way if the programmable feature OEM Remote Start (Feature 5) is set EQUIPPED and the car is OEM remote start enabled (it has the remote start button on the OEM remote). WHITE (-): Not used for this application. YELLOW (+) ignition status output: (not used for aftermarket remote start installations) Connect this wire to the “ignition input” of the security system 200 mA output maximum. NOTE - The ignition output will be inactive during the remote start operation in order for the security system to not be triggered. DARK GREEN (-) door status output: Connect this wire to the “(-) door trigger input” of the security system. LT. GREEN CAN bus wire : Connect this wire to the CAN wire in the car light green pin #1 of the OBD2 connector. NOTE - This must be a soldered connection as far away from the diagnostic connector as possible. DO NOT interrupt this wire. © 2006 Directed Electronics. All rights reserved. 1701G 12-06 DARK BLUE (-) Glass/hatch/trunk status output: Connect this wire to the “(-) instant trigger input (trunk input/shunt)” of the security system. NOTE – This output will be artificially activated by the 1701G when trunk release input is activated from the security system while in armed state, in order to prevent the security system from triggering, in case that the trunk is not automatically released or opened by the user within a predefined time (usually 5 seconds). This output will remain active as long as the trunk remains opened. If the trunk is not opened this output will remain active a predefined time (30 seconds), to simulate the factory auto-relock feature, or until a disarm/unlock or arm/lock command is received on the inputs or read on the CAN bus by the 1701G. – This output will be artificially deactivated by the 1701G when the trunk release button is pressed on the original remote of the car while in armed state, in order to prevent the security system from triggering, in case that the trunk is automatically released or opened by the user. This output will remain inactive as long as the trunk remains opened. If the trunk is not opened this output will remain inactive a predefined time (30 seconds), to simulate the factory auto-relock feature, or until a disarm/unlock or arm/lock command is received on the inputs or read on the CAN bus by the 1701G. ORANGE/WHITE – bypass output: Connect this wire only if a immobilizer bypass is needed for GM cars. See diagram B for detail, this wire is NOT needed on OEM remote start equipped vehicles. Powering up the 1701G After all connections have been made, plug in the module and the LED will report software version then flash at a slow rate waiting the ignition to turn on to identify the vehicle. Once you turn the key on, 1701G will make the following steps: - checks if the platform of the car is recognized ( max 10 sec ); then after the vehicle is recognized the LED will go solid indicating a successful learn. When ignition on is detected, the module will provide a (+) accessory output on the orange/white bypass wire similar to an accessory output while the module learns the vehicle. During normal operation, the 1701G enters sleep mode if no input is active or no CAN bus activity is detected for more than 4 sec. When the 1701G is in sleep mode the LED is OFF; when the 1701G is not in sleep mode the LED is ON. This is a method to verify proper operation of the 1701G module. NOTE: For NON-OEM equipped remote start vehicles where you are using the orange/white bypass wire, you MUST plug in the module after all connections are finished. After a failed initialization phase, the 1701G will switch off the LED for 5 seconds. Then it will flash shortly either once or twice indicating a failed learn. Feature Programming The feature programming routine is used to access and change any of the feature settings. The feature settings can be accessed and changed by using the button and LED on the unit to enter the feature programming routine. To enter feature programming routine 1. Within 5-seconds, press the programming button corresponding to the feature number you want to change. 3. After a 3 second pause, the LED will blink the corresponding number of times you pressed the button confirming the programming feature 1-9 you wish to change, pause and confirm again for up to 15 seconds. 4. Press and hold the Programming button and the LED will flash a number of times equal to the current settings of the selected feature either once or twice. The module will toggle between the two settings automatically while the button is held. 5. Release the button when the desired setting is selected. - The Learn Routine can be exited by - Turning the ignition On or - No activity for 15-seconds. Feature Feature (Default setting in BOLD) Number 1 ZAP (Reset) 2 Auto-lock with Speed 3 Auto-unlock with key removed Prevent Door Locking if Key left in ignition 4 5 OEM remote start 1 Blink 2 Blinks Off Off On On On/ZAP (reset) On Off Off Off/NOT Equipped On/Equipped Programming features setting guide The following programmable features are proposed to be implemented for 1701G module: 1. ZAP – OFF / ON ( default – OFF ) When this option is ON, 1701G will automatically restore default programmable features. When this option is set to OFF (default) all programmable features are left as they were programmed last. 2. Factory auto-lock – ON / OFF ( default – OFF ) When this option is ON, 1701G will automatically lock the doors and the trunk when the vehicle speed becomes greater than 12 mph, but when this option is OFF, 1701G will not take any automatic action for auto-locking with speed. 3. Factory auto-unlock – ON / OFF ( default – ON ) When this option is ON, 1701G will automatically unlock the doors and the trunk when the ignition key is taken out from the ignition switch. NOTE: This feature is useful when a vehicle is NON OEM remote start equipped if the customer wishes to have auto unlock upon removing the key from the cylinder but when installing an aftermarket alarm this can unlock the door upon remote start shutdown. This retains the feature without unlocking the doors upon remote start shutdown. Be sure to turn the vehicles auto unlock function OFF if this feature is used. © 2006 Directed Electronics. All rights reserved. 1701G 12-06 When this option is OFF, 1701G will not take any automatic action for auto-unlocking. 4. Prevent Door Locking if Key left in Ignition ON/OFF ( default – ON ) When this option is ON, 1701G will not lock the doors when the ARM/LOCK input is received and the key is left in the ignition. 5. OEM remote start - OEM EQUIPPED / Not OEM EQUIPPED ( default - Off/Not OEM EQUIPPED) When this option is set to EQUIPPED, the 1701G will use white/blue input as a remote start trigger input and blue/white output will operate as a negative status output/ground while running output. Brown + brake shutdown will not be active in this case and is not used. When this option is programmed to NOT OEM remote start equipped (default) the 1701G will use white/blue input as a negative status input and Brown + brake output wire will have all the functionality associated with these signals. In this case Blue/white output will not be used. Version Report 1701G software version When the 1701G module is powered, the LED will indicate the software version: Software Version Example: Version 1.2.3 The LED will flash 1 time, then 1 second pause, then flash 2 times, then 1 second pause, then flash 3 times, then a 2 second pause, then the initialization routine will continue. © 2006 Directed Electronics.
