Where are you going? You should've run through the middle. What the heck is going on?" If you haven't already guessed, I was standing next to an increasingly frustrated footy fan at the Wests Tigers v Parramatta Eels NRL game at Anzac Oval on Saturday night. He was wearing an orange and black jersey from the 1990s with footy shorts, a club cap and thongs. In one hand he held two cans of XXXX beer, with the other curled into a fist that waved each time the Tigers failed to break through the Eels defence. Martin Jones was his name. He'd travelled from Sydney to Alice Springs earlier in the week to be at the pre-season trial game in support of his home team. "I've followed the Wests for most of their games and have seen them lose and win but it's always just good to stand here and support the guys," Mr Jones said. "You've gotta be a loyal fan, especially if you're as keen about rugby league as I am." he said. "I don't really like buying expensive tickets to sit in the grandstand or VIP lounges - it's a waste of money and f like being a part of the action on ground level because it feels like you're actually on the field with the boys."
