The involved components are the following: - Compressors electric motor - Condensers fans electric motors - Water pump electric motor (if present) The electrical data of the various components are indicated in the relative technical data sheets. EXAMPLE 1: Calculation for MAXIMO 58 P2 D C3: MAXIMUM ELECTRIC ABSORPTION [FLA] - Compressors A 31,9 - Condenser fans A 3,2 Maximum electric absorption A 35,1 + = EXAMPLE 2: Calculation for MAXIMO 58 P2 D C3 equipped with PPF MAX 2/1 pumping group: MAXIMUM ELECTRIC ABSORPTION [FLA] - Compressors A 31,9 - Condenser fans A 3,2 - Water pump A 3,5 Maximum electric absorption A 38,6 + + = IMPORTANT For water pumps and condenser fans, the current nominal values have been considered equal to the plate value. Therefore the nominal current and the plate current are the same. In fact, the real absorbed current is normally lower than the plate value. These values depend on the unit working conditions and on the control type of the plant. 16 RC GROUP S.p.A. ● T_MXM_0413_GB ● R410A THE FREE-COOLING SYSTEM The RC Group free-cooling water chillers provide significant energy saving whenever it is necessary to produce chilled water even in the presence of low outside air temperatures. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FREE-COOLING CHILLERS These chillers belong to a peculiar solution for the following characteristics: Free cooling coil. Microprocessor control system with advanced software which allows unit working at low condensing temperatures. This peculiarity enables to take advantage of the new compressors characteristics with condensing temperatures down to 25°C and consequently to work with the highest possible efficiencies. Electronic expansion valve, from model 98 P2 C4 S included, which allows an optimal and precise control of the refrigerant during evaporation and overheating phases. Axial fans directly coupled to EC type electric motors. Condensing control with continuous variation of the fans speed directly controlled by the microprocessor. Optimization of the cooling circuit that allows a reduction of the refrigerant charge and low pressure drops of the cooling circuit. FREE-COOLING ACTIVATION Operation in free-cooling mode is managed by the microprocessor control system: the freecooling system is activated when the ambient air temperature is at least 3°C below the temperature of the supply water (plant return water). Example 1: Active Free-cooling: Plant return water temperature (temperature of the supply water) 12°C Ambient temperature 8°C In these working conditions the free-cooling is active when the difference between the water and the ambient temperature is higher than 3°C. (12 – 8) = 4°C Example 2: Non-active Free-cooling: Plant return water temperature (temperature of the supply water) 12°C Ambient temperature 11°C In this working conditions the free-cooling is not active because the difference between the water and the ambient temperature is lower than 3°C. (12 – 11) = 1°C FREE-COOLING ACTIVATION DIAGRAM (°C) Chiller water inlet temperature 20 15 Free-Cooling ON 10 Free-Cooling OFF 5 -20 -15 -10 RC GROUP S.p.A. ● T_MXM_0413_GB ● R410A -5 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 (°C) Ambient temperature 17 WORKING LOGIC The air moved by the fans, crosses first the Free-Cooling coil and then the condenser coil of the cooling circuit. By using this additional coil we can take advantage of the low air temperature to cool the return water before sending it to the evaporator. This pre-cooling stage (free-cooling) helps to save energy by using the external air to supply part of the cooling load of the plant instead of relying entirely on the compressors. The RC Group Free-cooling chillers have three operating modes: 1) 2) 3) Normal operation (mechanical cooling). Partial free-cooling operation (free-cooling + mechanical cooling). Total free-cooling operation (only free-cooling). The hydraulic circuit predisposition is achieved with a 3-way motorized valve. MECHANICAL COOLING During normal operation the free-cooling valve by-passes the free-cooling coil supplying water to the evaporator to obtain the mechanical cooling. The unit works as a traditional liquid chiller. The microprocessor manages the leaving water temperature regulating the compressors capacity and the condensing control is effected by reducing the air flow in the condensing coil through modulation of fans rotation speed. Free-cooling coil Condensing coil Evaporator FREE-COOLING As soon as the ambient air temperature decreases of 3°C below the water return temperature, the free-cooling valve feeds the free-cooling coil which pre-cools (partial free-cooling) or cools (total free-cooling) the water before entering the evaporator. The control logic manages in an optimized way the engaged electric power in order to face the thermal load to be dissipated, reducing at the minimum the compressors running time in order to exploit the free-cooling at the maximum. PARTIAL FREE-COOLING The free-cooling is partial when the water is partially cooled by the Free-Cooling coil and the remaining part by the compressors. TOTAL FREE-COOLING The free-cooling is total when the full thermal load is completely supplied by the exchange coil. Free-cooling coil Condensing coil Evaporator 18 RC GROUP S.p.A. ● T_MXM_0413_GB ● R410A The free-cooling percentage compared with the requested total thermal load depends on the ambient temperature, on the chilled water temperature returning from the plant and on the total thermal load. Passage from mechanical cooling to Free-Cooling: The free-cooling valve opens to feed the free-cooling coil. The compressors remain active following the normal temperature control. The Free-Cooling system provides to increase the global cooling capacity of the machine, by reducing the demand for compressor operation until the eventual shutdown. Temperature control in Free-Cooling mode: When operating in total Free-Cooling, the fans are proportionately controlled on the chilled water temperature. In case the cooling capacity in free-cooling mode is excessive, the microprocessor proportionally reduces the fans rotation speed. In case the cooling capacity in free-cooling mode is still excessive, the microprocessor stops the fans. The supplied cooling capacity in free-cooling mode could still be excessive than the requested one. In this case, the microprocessor controls the 3-way valve in total close down, for the total by-pass of the free-cooling coil. Passage from Free-Cooling to mechanical cooling: The system return to the “Mechanical cooling” condition, with compressors activation according to the plant thermal load.
