2011 Annual Report
“If you keep believing, the dream that you wish will come true.”
On Our cover
Anna Beth Aldridge, age 4, “I wish to go to Disney World to meet the princesses… I love princesses!!”
A Mother’s Letter In January 2009, a month before her third birthday, our daughter Anna Beth was diagnosed with a large mass on her left kidney. We soon learned that it was a Stage 1 Wilm’s Tumor - a childhood form of kidney cancer. Our life for the next year was a whirlwind of treatments, travels, hopes, fears, financial worries and stress. It was a draining year for us physically, emotionally and financially. We felt secluded at times because we needed to be very careful with Anna Beth’s immunity while she was receiving chemotherapy. There were many times we wanted to take Anna Beth, run away and escape from the needles and the chemotherapy that made her cry and feel yucky. It was hard to watch her suffer and be scared through all the medical procedures. It was hard to watch our little girl who loved princesses and all things girly to lose her hair and turn so pale. We dreamed of better, happier and healthier days for our little girl and our family. So when Make-A-Wish of MS came to interview us, Anna Beth wished to go to Disney World and meet the princesses. Disney World was a place that, for a little child, is where dreams come true! Disney Princess movies and toys had been a comfort to Anna Beth during her hospital stays and treatment. A trip like this sounded wonderful to all of us. We couldn’t have afforded such a trip at that time on our own as finances were tight from our changes in work patterns and medical expenses. So, when we received a call from the Make-A-Wish of MS office several months after Anna Beth finished her treatments that her wish to go to Disney World had been granted, we could hardly contain our excitement! It was such a gift to have our family go together and celebrate the joy of her healing and being cancer-free! Anna Beth still talks about her Make-A-Wish “party” where her wish trip was revealed! Our trip to Orlando, Florida, was all and more than we could have imagined! Our stay at Give Kids the World Village was like living like royalty with plentiful food, activities and love provided! Not only were we pampered at Disney World but also at Sea World and Universal Studios! Our special Make-A-Wish passes assured that our every need was met! The joy of seeing Anna Beth meet the princesses is something I will always remember! The generosity of Make-AWish donors gives children and families connected to life-threatening illnesses a joyful experience with value that is immeasurable! The joy of a trip like ours replaces the sad and scary memories with new magical ones! It gives a family a chance to bond without household or financial worries, and it gives siblings a chance to have fun and laugh together again! Anna Beth and her brother almost weekly comment about their wonderful memories of our magical Make-A-Wish trip! The memories of our time in the hospital and cancer clinic seem a lot smaller in comparison! As we approach the season of Thanksgiving, our family is so thankful for the gift of joy and emotional healing that was given to us by Make-A-Wish. As a result, I believe we have become more humble and generous ourselves!

A Time to Celebrate I am thankful for the recent opportunity to attend the National Make-A-Wish conference with Kit Barksdale, CEO, and Judy Phillips, Director of Operations and Program Services. Against the continued, challenging national and local economic conditions, the MS Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation received awards for achieving a Chapter record number of wishes granted and for raising a Chapter record amount of funds. Your Mississippi chapter granted 124 wishes during FY 2011 and raised above $1.3 million. I want to take this opportunity to thank our prior Board Chair, Tom Hinds, our prior CEO, Paul Jones, and our entire TEAM for their hard work during the year. As we look ahead to our challenges in the upcoming year, I am optimistic about our future as a Chapter. We have developed a strong fundraising and strategic plan, have an outstanding new CEO and Team, and have also welcomed dynamic new leaders to our Board. There is much work yet to be done and while we are proud of our increased wish granting and fundraising, we have high goals for this new year. We are passionately focused on granting every eligible child in MS their wish, but in order to do so, we need to continue to raise the bar on fundraising and wish granting. Finally, let me take a moment to thank all of you who contribute your time, talents and passion to our special, shared mission. Our previous success is only possible through your contributions, and I am hopeful that you each can join us as we look ahead and work together to provide Wish children of MS and their families with Hope, Strength and Joy that energizes them and provides special, priceless memories that last a lifetime for all those involved in a special wish. Sincerely,
Jamie Chustz

As the new CEO and President of the Mississippi Chapter of Make-AWish, I am proud to announce I am working with very dedicated and talented people. Mississippi recently won accolades at this year’s National Make-A-Wish Conference where this chapter won an award for granting the most wishes they have ever granted: 124. They also received an award for raising the most money they have ever raised: $1.3 million. While I was proud to take the bow for those successes, those successes were achieved by our board and staff before I arrived. But oh, what a great beginning that was for me! The most important measure of those awards is the good they represent. Here at Make-A-Wish, we grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with Hope, Strength, and Joy. I have seen what that means. It means that a child, scared and isolated by illness, is given a goal to look toward. They are able to enjoy a wish, their own personalized best wish. There will be a time of anticipation, of experience and of satisfaction. All of those experiences are designed to take away fear and hurt and replace it with strength and joy. We at Make-A-Wish believe, buoyed by anecdotal evidence, that wishes do indeed strengthen these special children. But we now know that as a fact. Over 83% of doctors surveyed saw the Make-A-Wish experience as a measurable quantity on the condition of the child. They observed that after receiving a wish, a child is more positive and accepting of the medical treatments. If we are all in this life together, and I believe we are, we are also in these experiences together. Bless those who choose to reach out and help these children to endure and conquer the fear of the unknown and heal their families who are in such need. I am so very grateful to be a part of this mission,

When we grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions, we help them experience hope, strength and joy. During a wish experience, joy eclipses illness – and that’s why we’re here. The annual Wishmaker’s Bash is the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Mississippi’s largest fundraiser! The event will include silent and live auctions, dinner, dancing and special appearances by our wish children. Sponsorship donations are not due until next year, so let us know how you can help! Visit our website at www.ms.wish.org for more information on becoming a Wishmaker!

making come true. . .
“On Monday, March 14, 2011, at approximately 8:30 a.m., I caught the best fish I’m going to catch all year. By most people’s standards, it wasn’t a trophy “just a barracuda” that weighed way less than twenty pounds. Yet, I’m positive that it’s the greatest thing I’m going to pull out of the water this year. An eight year old boy from Jackson, MS, with acute lymphocytic leukemia had a wish to come to Key West and catch a fish - a barracuda. The night before the trip, the boy, Luke Ferguson, and his family had been by the boat to say hello and were as nice as could be. The next day, we got Luke his barracuda early - right on top of the “Vandenburg” wreck, where I hoped it would be. And the smile on his face was probably bigger than the one on mine but it was close. It turned out to be an almost perfect fishing trip. What made it even better was that Luke’s dad informed me that Luke had responded excellently to treatment and that they were now confident that he would live a full, active life, and possibly come back to fish with us many, many more times. God, I hope so. He’s a great kid and deserves to have a life at least as long, rich and full as my own life has been. I can’t tell you how great you feel after a day like that, and seeing a child’s pure joy in something we take for granted just renewed my enthusiasm for my job all over again.” Captain Gene
You’re kidding me, right!!! I really am going fishing in Key West? WOW!
We will NEVER forget all of the kind people who made Luke’s Wish come true! THANK YOU (you all know who you are)…the WONDERFUL PEOPLE at Tyson in Flowers, Jane Walsh, Judy Phillips, and Shaye Smith at Make-A-Wish MS; Lisa Balkin and the sweet ladies at Make-A-Wish South FL; Captain Gene and all of his super friends and Captain Jeremy in Key West. YOU ARE ALL TREASURES! It is so awesome to meet the people who are making my Wish come true! Thanks Tyson! 6
Thank you from the Fergusons.
Fishing with Captain Gene and First Mate Run. Check out the driver – yep, that’s me! A little sea sickness didn’t stop me from having an unbelievable day!
It was a fight, but I got him – a Barracuda!!! I also caught Black Fin Tuna, Yellow Tail Snapper, Mahi Mahi (Dolphin), Rock Fish and some more things that we had to throw back – even caught a Black Tip Shark, but he broke my line! This is Captan Gene and me with my Barracuda. 7

Thank You Dear Ms. Judy, I am writing to tell you how very, very thankful we are to Make-A-Wish of MS for granting our daughter Anna Beth’s wish to go to Disney World and meet the princesses! She has loved princesses from a very young age, and I remember how the Disney princess movies especially would calm her when she was scared in the hospital! We just went on our wish trip, which was not only to Disney World, but to Universal Studios and Sea World as well! It was so wonderful!! I can’t even find the words to express how wonderful it all was and how humbled and blessed we feel by this gift! Anna Beth was so excited to see Cinderella’s castle, to meet Disney characters, and especially to meet the Disney Princesses!!! Anna Beth was treated like a princess at all of the parks!!! Also, at the awesome Give Kids The World Village, where Make-A-Wish arranged for us to be able to stay, we were ALL treated like royalty! They had so many great activities for the kids to do make Anna Beth’s stay so fun and special! They even brought gifts to our villa every day! We felt so pampered! There were also so many added “perks” we received because of Make-A-Wish that made our stay and our trips to the parks even more wonderful! We thank everyone at Make-A-Wish for making our little girl’s dreams come true and giving our family a trip of a lifetime! The kids said every day that it was “the best day ever!” A trip like this, where money worries aren’t and issue and where medical worries disappear in the magic, is so awesome! It certainly helps cover up any painful memories of hospitals and fears with joy and laughter! Thank you and all that give to your wonderful organization, for the time, effort, and very generous, monetary gifts which made this trip possible! Our memories have a lasting, priceless value in all of our hearts! 20

“I wish to go on a shopping spree.”
Anna Beth has been cancer-free since she finished her treatment, and our trip was a wonderful way for us to enjoy and celebrate her return to excellent health!!! There really aren’t enough words to express how much we appreciate all you did! Thank you for giving back of yourselves! Thank you for the joy you brought to our family and OUR little princess!!! God bless you! With warmest thanks, Christy Aldridge Dear Make-A-Wish of MS, It is with sincere gratitude that we say Thank You for the most magnificent week that our family has ever experienced. Words cannot do justice to the many magical experiences that Maylee and each of us were able to be a part of while on Maylee’s wish trip to Disney. Maylee was completely smitten with each of the Disney princesses but especially showed a fondness for Cinderella. Maylee, herself, felt like a real princess with the royal treatment that she received at each of the theme parks and while staying at Give Kids The World. With all that Maylee went through over the past year with lengthy hospital stays, PICC lines, countless blood draws and so much more, this magical trip was just what the doctor ordered! Our little princess was able to just be a kid and have a great time with her mommy and daddy and siblings. We, as a family, will always remember our magical trip and will spread the word of the wonderful work of Make-A-Wish to all of our family and friends. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for making our little, special Princess Maylee’s dream come true! Sincerely, Mike & Rebecca Phelps
We Remember…
