Corbin Introduces a Classic Solo Saddle for 2015 Indian Scout
Hollister, CA - Corbin introduces an outstanding Classic Style Solo seat for the nostalgically styled 2015 Indian Scout. It provides maximum rider comfort combined with classy looks and a wide range of custom options. It also accepts a Corbin removable backrest for a total of 12 inches of vertical back support. Their sculpted seating position gives maximized body contact and provides touring quality comfort. This neutralized seat platform offers an easier reach to the ground and a more ergonomic position on the bike. Classic Solo Saddle and backrest provide excellent support for riding while the shaping in the nose allows excellent ground reach at stop signs. Corbin designed their saddle to place the rider in the sweet spot on the bike for the best feeling of control. This placement is most comparable with the stock Indian seat, yet the narrow nose provides ground reach similar to Indian’s reduced reach model while the neutralized seating area allows taller riders to scoot back for leg room...The best of both worlds! For those interested in obtaining more information on Corbin, you can reach them at 800-538-7035 or online at www.corbin.com. 2015 Indian Scout
those who wanted that old-school recognizably “Indian” motor, but that didn’t mean they didn’t have something modern in the works. And now we know, the NEW Scout is retro-ultra modern, having a water cooled 100 horsepower, double overhead cam, 4 valves per cylinder engine, as well as the modern styling, middle weight body with DNA that goes back to Springfield. For people who want to ride – including younger ages, and women – here is a motorcycle you might want to own, something other than a “Classic” heavy cruiser. By the way, though the Scout is considered a “middle-weight motorcycle” today – our grandparents would not think of it as such. In comparison to the big Chief cruiser they rode in the ’40’s and early ‘50’s, it’s essentially the same size bike. Weight: Scout – 558lbs, Chief 560 lbs. Wheelbase: Scout – 61.5 in., Chief 62 in. Fuel capacity: Scout – 3.3 gal., Chief 3.5 gal. Grandpa would be very much at home riding this Indian!
City bike – or all around cruiser?
MY RIDE
Story by Ray Seidel
Though now made in Spirit Lake, Iowa, as most readers know, “Indian Moto cycle” was born in 1901 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Production of motorcycles continued until around the summer of 1953, though Indian did NOT (contrary to Wikipedia) go bankrupt – they were acquired by the Brits. Sales continued through several different owners through the years – mostly rebadged imports, and in fact one could step into a showroom in every decade in this century and last and buy a brand new Indian. (Look it up in Kelly Blue Book). The last time we saw an all-new Indian Scout was model year 2004. It was the end of the line for Indians made in Gilroy, California, but for 2004 the Scout was coming into its own with a fresh design of new sleek and sexy sheet metal coupled with an all new Indian badged 92 cubic inch engine with round cylinder heads similar to the Power Plus 100 used in the Chief. These were gutsy motors contracted out to S&S, and sorry, they have long since been sold out. The 2003 and earlier models were basically badge-engineered plain vanilla cruisers with off the shelf parts and motor with Indian window dressing. This is not to say they were unattractive bikes! They were of a clean, classic style with “Indian” flavoring, and a good looking alternative to the Harley-Davidson line-up. However, the DNA of these Scouts clearly originated in Milwaukee, not Springfield. Only a handful of 2004 Indians were made when production stopped in September 2003, and again, they did NOT go bankrupt – they were acquired by the Brits. Flash back to the last Indian Scouts made in Springfield. Indian was typically ahead of its time, resources permitting. Such was the case in the late 40’s when they looked into getting into the light weight motorcycle market with vertical twins and singles. We all know how the Japanese dominated that market over the coming decades. Springfield had high hopes with these bikes, even to the point of stopping production of its signature big cruiser, the Chief, in 1949 to concentrate on the Scout. Sad to say, Indian’s post war quality controls for these new light weights was poor, and were shipped to
16
dealers who were left to deal with a number of problems. For the record, the Springfield factory was able to pull themselves together and again build and ship improved quality products, but by 1952 they were down to their last nickel and threw in the towel on this line. When today’s Spirit Lake Indian looked for a new “Scout”, they didn’t look at this offshoot, they looked further back. A couple of years ago Polaris Industries’ Vice President of Motorcycles, Steve Menneto, was on hand at the International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, CA, to tease the new Chief coming out in several months. We spent a bit of time talking, I discussing how Springfield Indian became the world’s (repeat world’s) largest manufacturer of motorcycles, and their missteps to failure. And to my astonishment, that the Gilroy Indian factory made the exact same missteps to failure. Did the management at Gilroy not study the history of the company? From the beginning, Polaris has done their homework on the history of Indian, and who the buyers of the brand are. But they did not stop
at just cracking the covers of books. The crew at Indian got out actual real Indian motorcycles made in Springfield to test ride, and to find out firsthand about the reputation, the feel, the ride, the quality, the magic of riding an “Indian.” As our conversation continued, I mentioned that while many think the Indian Chief is the best looking motorcycle ever made, many think the Indian 101 Scout is the best Indian ever made. This would be a logical follow-up to the Chief. There was nothing on the 101 Scout that didn’t belong or was missing, and the ride position was perfect. Steve listened to this, and I’m certain heard this exact same thing many, many times from others. They had something cooking on the back burner. They were eyeballing the Scout in general and the 101 in particular. However, this bike would not follow the same path as its big brother the Chief.
AN AGING MARKET
New statistics compiled by the Motorcycle Industry Council show that the median age of
APRIL 2015
California motorcycle owners was 45 in 2012, up from 33 in 1990 and 41 in 2009. However this is somewhat misleading as almost 40% of the study’s respondents were 50 and older – compared with only 10% in that age range in 1990. Also, there are more licensed motorcyclists in California without a motorcycle than there are licensed riders who own one. A core audience is rapidly aging out. To wit: While at the Laughlin River Run a couple of years ago, I was marveling at the new Indian 111 Thunder Stroke engine (the bike itself had not yet been revealed). In my opinion, even better looking than the previous Power Plus. Clearly robust engineering, 3 cams (with huge cam chain tensioners) plus the finned valve covers that hearken back to the look of the Springfield flatheads. Fantastic job of capturing that “look” of the originals in every possible way. Yet still, this was a two valves per cylinder, pushrod engine. I told the engineer at the display that Indian was known for innovation, and sort of expected something ahead of the curve? He explained THIS was for
APRIL 2015
Quick Throttle had Scouts for 3 weeks, so this is not a review after a 20-minute demo ride, or a single day; this is what it’s like to live with one for several hundred miles and getting to know its personality, pro and con. I had already seen YOU TUBE videos of different riders and a number of reviews, so I had a good idea of what to expect. After picking up a red pre-production model at the warehouse in Redlands, I was eager to log some serious time on this bike. Now note – the new Scout has the 1200cc market in general, and the Harley-Davidson Sportster in particular clearly in its sights, and in fact – to the dollar – both bikes in gloss black (Sportster 1200 Custom) are the same price: $10,999. And as I own a Sportster myself, I will highlight a few things that are different, and the same. Now, I already knew from rider comments that this bike was quick. Was it? Well, put the spurs to this baby, and it’ll snap your head right back. Chiropractors will LOVE this bike! I’ll put it another way: not once in all the time I had the Scout was I able to pull out all the stops before it met or exceeded my acceleration requirements! Right away it had a great feel, sitting IN the bike (like the original Scout) rather than ON the motorcycle, as with the Sporty. This was intentional on the part of Indian, to get that same ergonomics. To my great surprise, foot pegs had the exact same reach, the same as the forward controls on my Sporty. The Scout does one better for extra tall or short riders with pegs that go 4” farther out, or that go back. The bars and seats can also be changed over for taller/shorter riders, but designed for that sweet spot for most riders. I happen to be 6’ 2” and 230 pounds of fighting flab, and the bike seemed to fit me just fine. We’ll get more into custom set-up later. It did seem however the steering did not turn as tightly as on the Sportster. Once firing up the Indian there’s another difference from the Harley – rather than the potato potato potato sound, there is a smooth purr of a throaty wildcat. The Indian Chief is much the same, even though the engines could not be more different. Leaving the warehouse, the road leading to the Interstate was being worked on and chopped up, so you know how that is, yet the Scout seemed not to notice this broken road at all, while my
17
saloon, and fielding another round of questions, I was able to chill a bit and view the Scout from a different vantage point looking at the sculpted lines as a theme from the rear fender to the front, and how they all fit together. I already admired the sharp edged tank, its badging, and the design motif of pushrods on the engine to honor its past history. Also the Brough Superior style exhaust appeals to me, even though nothing like the 101 Scout. Motorcycles are considered three things: 1) transportation, 2) a work of art, and 3) Best Friend. The Scout is a work of art with a capital “A.” And as fond as I am of my own motorcycles, with this bike I think I understood the relationship between Roy Rogers and Trigger – you just bond together almost from the start… and it does what you’re thinking. There are a couple of things I’d like to see on the Scout. The original had floorboards. Having floorboards on MY Indian, I appreciate not having my feet locked into one position on long rides. However, there are aftermarket floorboards available, probably ready when you read this. Original Scouts also had pin striping, almost a lost art today. Would be nice if the factory put frosting on the cake. Now, what about that pain in the butt saddle? It looks great, feels fine on a short spin, but after more than two hours became a problem…at first. Logging hundreds of miles on the new Scout, the leather saddle slowly seemed to break in and conform to my ischial callosities for a much more comfortable experience on a day trip. Give it some time. Moreover, Corbin now has great looking Sporty style seats which offer more wiggle room fore and aft if you want to look into that.
Sporty (which I rode up on) transmitted every imperfection. Not harshly, but still. The Chief is the same way, again, even though a different kind of bike. I was LOOKING for potholes when I test rode a Chief Vintage, yet it just rode over everything as smooth as glass. One issue I noticed in a few YOU TUBE videos is some say the rear suspension is too soft and can bottom out. Again, at my weight, I did not experience that, though I did not take it on any old cow trails.
1st DAY ON THE ROAD
Riding up the steep Cajon Pass on I-15 towards Victorville, the Scout zipped along like a cruise missile past the pokey trucks and faster cages. What limited my speed was no windshield on the bike (as there is on mine) so I had a gorilla grip on the bars to hang on. I decided to take the scenic Route 66 to Barstow at a comfortable cruising speed of 55 to see if it’s as comfortable as its great-grandfather. A key difference between this and a Sportster Custom is the smaller 3.3 gallon tank, even though it looks large (4.5 gal on Sporty Custom, both the XL1200C and XL883C). That can limit range… however, I averaged 47 miles per gallon in mixed driving (with a high of 53 mpg) which ought to get you 130 miles before the warning light comes on telling you there’s another ½ gallon left to the next filling station. HOWEVER – I want to remind you readers this was a pre-production bike. You recall SATURN automobiles? Their pre-production cars didn’t get mid-30’s mpg, they got mid 40’s or better, so something happened between R&D and the assembly line. I would recommend you do a check on your bike if you get one. One thing I really like is the Space Shuttle style locking gas cap with a metal ring around the opening, so less likely to scratch the paint during fueling. A 3rd lever by the clutch lets you zero out the odometer, and can also toggle to RPM if you wish. Sporty owners will have to get use to the kick stand being further back, and L & R turn signals are both on the left side. Continuing my ride out of Barstow and back on the Interstate to Hesperia, the engine at freeway speeds is purring effortlessly, the bike does everything I tell it without hesitation, but the saddle is getting pretty uncomfortable. With the banana seat on the Sportster one can scoot forward and back to alter the pressure points on the butt bones; on the John Deere tractor style saddle on the Scout, as good looking and comfy as it is at the start, there’s no room for movement. Four hours into the ride and I pull over for a combo burrito & Coke at Baker’s in Hesperia for a needed break and some fuel. By now the sun is setting, and I’m back on the Scout for a night ride. The instruments light up in bomber pilot red, and include an ABS idiot light. There is no ABS on American bikes, but there are for exports where it is required for insurance reasons in other counties. Both the Sporty and Scout have the speedo needle that is at 12 o’clock at 60 mph, so at night only a glance is needed to check your speed. After six hours of riding my first day, I’m loving the Scout, but the seat was a serious pain in the you know what. But more on that later.
LIVING WITH THE SCOUT
Filling up the Indian Scout at the local gas station draws an instant crowd. People from THREE different gas pumps rush over to check it out, ask questions, and salivate all over it. Starting the
18
you hit a bump. Saddlebags are much the same as on the Chief – 2 cams flip for quick release. Passenger backrest pops off easy as well. (And one for you if you like, too.) The windscreens were designed early on in the program. The bike has no hardware for it, it’s all in the windscreen itself, so you can change from a tall to a short if it’s really hot in just seconds. So there it is; awesome sauce. I urge in the most animated fashion to take a test ride and prepare for a big grin. And how impressed was I, really? Answer: I just bought one. Many thanks to Indian Motorcycle Company for the loaner. http://www.indianmotorcycle.com/en-us
EXTRAS
bike is a touch of the starter button, and it cranks on its own until it fires up. Riding through Old Town Temecula on a weekend, the traffic is slooow, stop, slooow, stop, again, and again. This brings to light two things. One, the electronic brain controlling the engine speed will not allow it to go below 1500-2000 rpm. Try to lug this engine, and it will push right back. Second, even though this is a water cooled engine, it throws out a LOT of heat on the right leg at walking speed or less. I’ll add that steering effort at slow speeds is non-existent. At stop and normal speeds on surface streets and highway, feedback from the bars is what anyone would expect, but at a crawl the feeling of power steering on an ice rink takes getting use to – I want the bit of resistance so I know I’m in control. Parked in front of a local watering hole in Old Town, as fate would have it another guy on a red Scout passed by, swung around, and we compared notes. He just bought his in another State, and though not happy with the dealer, loved the bike. His only issue was there was a lag in the fly-bywire throttle. His dealer’s fix was for him to buy a stage one exhaust ($1000) which seemed to solve the problem. My pre-production bike had no such
delay in throttle response; it was perfect. Scouts are designed for easy service, for the most part. For the DIY set, dealers have an oil change kit ($80) with a filter and synthetic oil. Drain plugs are easy to get to, the filter not so much. Depending on what type of filter wrench you have, you may (or may not) have to pull the horn. Air filter is another matter, that gas tank has to come off (and seat) to get to it. Another weekend day trip to Julian, and again people come out from everywhere to ask about the bike, sit on it, have their picture taken with it, and tell me about their family members that once owned an Indian, and generally lust after it. I think I probably “sold” a dozen bikes that one day alone just responding to questions from people wanting to know more about it. Riding down the twisty road on the return trip, and having spent hundreds of miles on this Scout, it occurs to me the bike has become almost telepathic in anticipating whether I want to move to the left, a steady sway to the right, or jump to warp speed. Stopping at a back country

So - city bike, or all purpose cruiser? Indian didn’t come up with this bike through market research, but is designed for the urban environment, running around town, as that second bike, being a touring bike, that kind of world. It’s a solo rider bike right out of the box unlike the Sportster. Again, designed to fit into that happy medium of different size riders – some from the 1200cc market going up in size, some from the larger big cruiser size, most will find a good fit. However, Indian showed us in the media how that can be tweaked for riders on either side of the bell curve. With the tallest person they could find, they put him on a Scout set up for the smallest. First change the foot pegs, as mentioned above, with some further out. Next, the seat pops right off, and replaced with one that places the rider further back. Handle bars come off with four allen bolts, now a longer reach for the taller rider, and thus a perfect fit. All now available at the dealer. For those who like the bike because it’s smaller and very powerful, plus the great handling, some will want to expand on that. Highway bars for up front, and Stage 1 exhaust with a bit more noise and more torque (certified in California) can be added. All accessories are tested and measured as a whole system with the bike – the quality of the chrome, the vibrations, fading, all that stuff – that’s why the accessories lag behind the bike, because they test everything they sell. Remember, it’s a solo bike, but you can add a luggage rack (quick release) on the back, a passenger seat that appears thick enough to prevent a mutiny from your rider, and passenger pegs that mount so they won’t move so much when

Editor’s Note
- as we went to press, a recall notice was issued for the 2015 Scout - about 800 units manufactured from May 12, 2014, to Feb. 13, 2015, for inspection of and to possibly replace the rear brake master cylinder, NHTSA announced. A defect identified with the rear brake master cylinder, manufactured for Indian by Zhejiang Jingke Auto Parts Co. Ltd. of China, could cause the motorcycle to have a reduction or a complete loss of rear brake power. Indian said it received warranty claims on Jan. 15 and Feb. 18 related to the problem but that neither incident resulted in an accident or injuries. Dealers are asked to inspect and if necessary replace the rear brake master cylinder free of charge.

Natural Born Rider Story and Photos by Angela Conner
The evolution of a female rider can take many forms. Some women spend numerous years on the back of a motorcycle before they decide to take control of the throttle and subsequently their own destination. Other lady riders experience an awakening and set out to master the skill of maintaining balance on 2 wheels without any prior experience. But perhaps the most natural form of a female rider is the one who is born into this lifestyle. Daughters that grow up cultivating their skills through years of exposure to the excitement that the world of motorcycles provides.

Roxanne Patrick, raised in Northern California with a houseful of brothers, has been riding motorcycles her whole life. She got her first bike, a Honda 50, when she was just 8 years old. She enjoyed getting dirty but eventually outgrew her Honda and moved up to a Yamaha XS400. After riding her Yamaha for quite a few years, she graduated to a V Star Classic 650. Today you can spot Roxanne cruising around Casa Grande, Arizona on her 1968 Harley-Davidson Servi-car. What is a Servi-car you ask? Well let me be the one to educate you. The Harley-Davidson Servicar is a three-wheeled utility motorcycle which was manufactured from 1932-1973. The vehicle was originally designed to assist in the delivery of automobiles but was also very popular as a utility vehicle for small businesses and mobile vendors. In addition, many police departments used Servicars to assist in parking enforcement. Roxanne spent 12 years searching for just the right Servi-car. She was looking for one without modifications or any customization – purely original. While surfing the internet one day, Roxanne was excited to find a bone-stock 1968 police Servicar complete with detachable cab. Roxanne bid until she had ultimately reached her financial limit and then resigned herself to the notion that someone else
who had outbid her would be the owner of her ride. The next day she woke up to discover that her bid was actually the winning bid and she was now the proud owner of this very unique mode of transportation. Shipping her bike all the way from Canada to Arizona proved to be quite pricey. Roxanne could have easily purchased a brand new soft tail twin cam for the same amount that she paid for her vintage iron and its trip across the border. Bringing her ride home was her focus and she made it happen, cost be damned. Roxanne’s retired police Servi-car is as stock

as they come. This survivor has no custom paint or engine modifications. The 45 inch Flathead motor has 3 gears and reverse with a foot clutch and a shifter by the tank. At a top speed of about 50 mph, Roxanne uses the Servi-car as her daily ride. The removable fiberglass cab comes complete with a windshield wiper and a police light on the top. Roxanne rarely needs the cab as the weather in Arizona is usually perfect. The police stickers have been removed and the red and blue front lights replaced, so that she could register the vehicle but the siren remains on the front fender as an initiator of conversation and entertainment. Roxanne’s seat doesn’t afford the comfort of modern springs so she is inclined to stand up when riding over bumps in the road but keep in mind these bikes were built for tooling around the city at moderate speeds.
APRIL 2015
Heads often turn as Roxanne goes motoring by on her unusual bike. Some have even offered to purchase the Servicar, but Roxanne just shakes her head politely and smiles at her diamond in the desert. While we were hanging out on the side of the road, a curious couple stopped by to inquire about the motorcycle and Roxanne was only too generous in sharing the history of her ride. It is Roxanne’s intention to keep her 1968 Harley-Davidson Servicar as original as possible. She might eventually have the motor overhauled but that’s about it. It is important to her that the motorcycle maintain its natural integrity. This came as no surprise to me after meeting Roxanne because she is obviously a natural born rider and an amazing woman with great integrity herself.

With more than 200 motorcycles on display and 2,000 guests in attendance, The Quail Motorcycle Gathering, presented by TUDOR, features one of the world’s finest and rarest collections of vintage and modern motorcycles. Sponsored by leading motorcycle manufacturers and top lifestyle, retail, and beverage companies, the event is hosted on the stunning green grasses of Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, California. This year, two racing legends will be honored during The Quail Motorcycle Gathering’s “Legend of the Sport” series. The 1969 AMA Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill and 1970 AMA Grand National Champion Gene Romero will be together for a rare appearance on stage. Lawwill won 17 National Championship races and amassed an incredible 161 AMA Grand National finishes during his 15-year racing career. He is also one of the featured riders in the 1970’s motorcycle movie classic “On Any Sunday,” where he co-starred with Steve McQueen and Malcolm Smith, of which Romero also appeared in. Romero’s career spanned 16 years, winning 12 AMA National Championship races and the 1975 Daytona 200. He was one of the first racers to attract sponsorship to the sport of motorcycling. Both Mert Lawwill and Gene Romero were inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998.

Randy Grubb has been ranked among the top 15 U.S. fabricators by Hot Rod Magazine. He built Jay Leno’s Tank Car, the Indy Special, the B-702, Piss’d Off Pete, the DecoLiner (the coolest combination of art deco with an RV that we’ve ever seen), the DecoPods, and the body for the Bob Maddox Pulse Jet Lakester.
Then Grubb got a call from his English pal, Tim “The Frogman” Cotterill, famous for his bronze sculptures of frogs, hawks, and owls. The Frog had designed a powerful, ultra-sleek machine with animal-like qualities that he called the Rocket 3. “It combines my love of choppers, trikes, hot rods, and dragsters,” Frog said, and then he asked Randy to team up with him to build it. Earlier, the Frogman had built the Rocket 1, a trike he made famous in England. Next, after he moved to Venice, California, Frog built the muscular 1,000 horsepower blown Hemi Rocket 2. This monster does 0-100 in less than 5 seconds, with a top end of 200 mph! From mind to metal, now witness Randy’ Grubb’s complete build of Cotterill’s Rocket 3. Its rear suspension is beautiful, cool, and crazy; it flexes just like a big cat on the run. And with its 430 horsepower Corvette engine, the Rocket 3 will scram, doing 0-60 in less than 4 seconds. The basic concept for the Decopods and the Decoson was born in 2012 when Randy was sitting on his buck for the fender of the B-702 and wondered why the form couldn’t be a motorcycle. In a conversation with Don Tippit, Don started talking about old scooters like the Cushman and the vintage late ‘40s Salsbury Model 85 scooter, and Randy’s imagination was sparked by his memory of the 1934 Art Deco Streamed

Henderson motorcycle. From that brainstorm, the Decopod was born: a fully functional—and fun— way to cruise down the highway in a motorcycle with doors. The idea of riding on the outside of the streamlined form evolved into Randy’s Decoson motorcycle. It was built in 2013 on a 1984 Sportster chassis. The tapered bullet-like, polished aluminum Decoson won 2nd in the Custom/Modified category at the 5th Annual Quail Motorcycle Gathering in Carmel, California, in 2013. It is now on permanent display at Northwest HarleyDavidson in Lacey, Washington. Photos of the Decoson and the Rocket 3 by Randy Johnson

Q: Gean Hardeck
That all said, I’d put my money on the battery or battery connection being the problem.
Dear, Dyno Steve. I just got my 2012 Road King back from the dealer after having new cams installed (SE255) and new lifters and adjustable pushrods and new inner cam bearings. When I tried to start it up it turned over very slowly, and only intermittently would it start. I was thinking that this shouldn’t happen because I have automatic compression releases. It sounds like the battery is almost dead. So I put the bike on the battery tender. The next day I tried it again with the same outcome. I called the service department and they told me to put a couple hundred miles on it first before changing anything and that it could just be that the cams are tight. All this sounds a little off to me. I would really appreciate your input on this. Thanks
A: Let’s start with the easy stuff: make sure all your battery cables are tight both at the battery and starter, then verify that the battery is fully charged (just like you did by putting it on the tender overnight). If both of these are good and it still turns over slow the next step is to have the battery load tested at your dealership. If all three of those check out we can rule out battery and look for other issues that may be causing your problem. Do you have a tuner for the bike? Did they tune the bike after the cam was installed? Are the automatic compression releases (ACR) activated in the map? That last question you might not be able to answer unless you have a way to access the ECM, but sometimes if you listen carefully you can hear the ACR click on. There is a possibility that you have a simple tuning issue. A SE255 cam is a mild cam and should not cause startup issues, but if the map is not dialed in right it can cause all sorts of problems. As for the cams being “tight” and causing the engine to turn over slowly, you better hope not. If somehow the cams are this “tight” you will have imminent catastrophic failure on your hands.

Q: Steve Rodgers Just a quick question for you, I decided to change my head pipes (much harder than I thought it would be) and I forgot to make a note on O2 sensor location! One has a grey plug and one has a black plug. Which is which? Please help! It’s a 2011 Street Glide.
A: Easy Peasy! The grey plug is for the front pipe and the black plug is the rear.
tech talk cont on 32
Q: Esther M Brown
Dear Tech Talk, I have a ‘06 Electra Glide Ultra that has developed some handling issues. I have had this bike for 8 years and recently it has been feeling loose in the corners. It is the most noticeable in long sweeping corners. I have checked the tire pressure and the air pressure in the rear shocks. There are no leaks in the front end and I have no speed wobbles. I run my rear suspension at 25 psi, tires are at 38 psi front and 40 psi rear. This is what I have always run it at. I have tried removing everything from the tour pack and saddle bags and still no change. Now what? Thank you for your time.
A: I want to start by giving you the gold star for the day; you checked your tire pressure! I can’t tell you how many times I tell people to check their tire pressure. It is very important to your bike handling and your safety. Please, please everybody check your tires! Do it now. I can wait. Ok, with that out of the way, let’s move on to your problem. On your bike the swing arm and powertrain are connected and move together, this is all held in the frame with rubber motor mounts. There is one mount in the front and two at the swing arm pivot. The alignment is held in place by two adjusters, one is at the front and the other one is at the top on the
engine. You will need to check the torque on all of these bolts, both the ones on the rubber mounts and the ones on the adjusters. A loose bolt here can cause all sorts of handling problems. You will also need to check the torque on the swingarm pivot shaft, shock mounts, and axle. While doing this make a visual check of the general condition of all parts mentioned earlier. You can check your tire pressure again. You can never can check that too much. Make sure there are no cracks, breaks or rust in any of the components. Pay particular attention to the condition of the rubber mounts (the rear mounts can be especially hard to see), If there are any cracks or tears in the rubber then replacement is required. Chances are that something in this line is worn, broken, or loose. If you can find that weak link, then your problem will be solved. Make sure to check everything, even if the first thing you check has a problem.
Q: Jim McMillin DynoSteve, I recently picked up a 2003 Road King that has a Hypercharger and the stock mufflers on it. The previous owner didn’t know much about the history on whether it had been flashed with Stage 1 ECM or not. I bought a Power Commander III, and my question is whether I should put a Stage 1 Map on the Power Commander and install it with this setup? I checked the plugs and they look maybe a little lean but not exceptionally (Not white at all...just a dull gray for the most part.) I was thinking if I put the Stage 1 Map on and the plugs turn blackish like its running rich, I can always remove it. Most guys go to slip on mufflers with the stock air cleaner and I know that doesn’t require a new map but what about the opposite? Does a high flow air cleaner with stock mufflers require a new map? I plan to get some aftermarket slip ons for it soon but in the meantime I’d like to run it with the current setup. Any thoughts?
39
TECH TALK A: Lets start with your ECM, there are a couple of ways you can determine if it has been reflashed: you can take it to the dealership and have them read the calibration ID, or you can see where your rev limiter hits. A stock ECM rev limiter hits at 5750 RPM where as a re-flashed ECM hits at 6200-6500 RPM. Most likely what is going on is the bike had a complete Stage 1 (pipes and air box) but when the original owner sold the bike he kept the slip ons. As for the Power Commander III (PCIII), yes you should use it and load an appropriate map. On Power Commanders web site ( http://www.powercommander.com/ ) you can find a map for stock pipes and probably a map for any slip on you plan to buy in the future. If your plugs are light grey in color, your bike is running lean. Golden brown is the color you should be looking for. The final part of your question I will answer with a simple yes, your bike needs to be tuned. Any change made to intake, exhaust or the engine, require a tune. There are even benefits to tuning a completely stock bike. We are talking about air cooled engines, they respond to your riding style more than people realize. The RPM that you stay at the most, will be the most responsive. A custom map gets more out of your engine and allows you to avoid running lean, which eventually leads to engine damage. I do not say this because I’m a tuner. I have seen first-hand over the years that a tune leads to a healthier engine, its longevity and ultimately a better riding experience. Q: Hoss Walters I have a 2014 Ultra Limited. My H-D servicer (non H-D) claims I must purchase a Power Commander and do the Dyno after installing true dual exhaust. No air cleaner changes. Some say it will adjust gas mix on its own, others say no. Some say the gas mix is lean from factory and others say that has been corrected for the 2014’s. Man, I hate to dump another $900 ($350 commander, $300 Dyno, $250 A/C) just for sound effect and heat relief on the right side. I added the $250 for a new A/C because you might as well open the air up if you are going to tune-up. Solid advice is sure appreciated. A: Your motorcycle is equipped with an O2 sensor and that does adjust fuel delivery, but not in the way that you are thinking. The only time they are actually working is at steady RPMs, such as when you are maintaining a constant speed. They do nothing during acceleration or any other time you move the throttle. So yes there is adjustment to the gas mix, but it is not a comprehensive measurement. When the engine speed varies the ECM is relying on the base settings from the factory, settings that are made for the stock configuration. As for spending the extra money on a tuner, dyno time and airbox, my only answer is do it. Doing it right the first time always pays off. It is a lot of extra money to spend but you will get more out of your bike and the pipes you just put on it. One thing to keep in mind when you are stressing about the money, is that tuning your bike can help save you money in the long run. Not only can it help with gas mileage, and longevity of the engine, it can also help with overheating problems that can wreak havoc on all of you bike’s systems. Do the right thing, Hoss, take care of your baby.

Ramjet’s AZ Bike Week
Pre-Rally Party Let the games begin! Pre rally stuff starts here in Arizona around the middle of March. The first big Arizona Bike Week pre-rally party is called “Ramjet’s Customer Appreciation Day”. Traci and I hopped on the Dyna and headed up there, sunny, about 85, just a beautiful day in the Valley of the Sun. Ramjets is about a half mile south of Buddy Stubbs H-D, location of another Annual Pre Rally event that happens the following Friday; “Buddy Stubbs Bike Week Bash” always a great show there, this year they were giving away a Harley 48. Ok... back to Ramjets... When we got to Ramjets, first thing we noticed when we pulled in was a ton of bikes! You could hear “Slik 50” the Swing band, and smell the burgers... you know the feeling.... ahhhhhhhh our people!.... All the locals know about Ramjet Racing that has been here in Phoenix for over 20 years and literally carries everything in stock to build a motorcycle from the ground up. This year their 15th Annual Customer Appreciation event went all out with a BBQ cook out, vendors, live music, bike show and raffle. Ramjet’s bike and car shop was open for business with tons of in store specials. Bikers were able to have their bike serviced while they enjoyed the event.

Their People’s Choice Bike Show had categories for; Best Bagger, Sportster, Club Style, Vintage, Custom and Metric. Joe and Pam Brinn with their lil’ dog from Michigan won best of bagger for their Vietnam memorial bike. Our good friend Jeremie (Bacpac) won for the metric category with her Suzuki Marauder; which she customized herself with the help of Woody’s, her BF and Dance Partner, fabricating skills ...She recently recovered from an MC accident where she was hospitalized and almost lost her leg. Hundreds from the biker community visited her in the hospital during her 3-month recovery. She’s a riding and dancing miracle! We had a blast “cuttin’ the rug” with the other dancers as the Rock-a-Billy/Swing band played. We visited with ole friends and the various venders with the latest in bike parts (a builder’s paradise). Then the raffles... $15,000 in prizes... it seemed like everyone won something and some won more than once, except us. I wanted a really cool set of pipes but a sly 8-yr old boy snagged em.... If you want to track us March 29th: Check out the Antique Bike Show (Shriners Hall 40th street South of the 202) in the morning … Perry and Traci

The Best Roads in Long Beach By Art Hall April is here and the Easter bunny is coming but more exciting for this fan is the extravaganza known as the TOYOTA Grand Prix Of Long Beach. Even though the 2014 race is long gone the 2015 is coming, April 17-19! To the fanatical race fan it’s the current winner ( Mike Conway 2014) that counts while - to the casual observer (and I am as casual as anyone) it’s the total experience. The TGPLB is and has been a driver’s favorite since it’s inception in 1975, and it’s a fan favorite too. I have been to many kinds of races for years and few if any can match the excitement at Long Beach. For one thing, it’s the weather (It has never rained on the race), the ocean views, the supporting infrastructure, transportation, all within easy walking distance. There’s Indycars, Formula drifting, race car drivers, expos, car games and toys, the smell of tire rubber, tequilas, margaritas, beers, King tacos, 11” corn dogs, the worlds biggest BBQ truck .... If all that makes your heartbeat go faster, you belong at this event. Sure, lots of great races and venues have some of these features but few if any have them all. Here’s a list of the three days of official racing Verizon Indy Car Series turbocharged horsepower hitting 185 on the street, TUDOR United Sports Car Championship of America’s elite prototypes, Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge Tire smokin’ ballet, Pro/Celebrity Race using Scion FR-S cars, Pirelli World Cup Challenge of 40 sports cars, Lifestyle Expo of 150 displays, family fun zone with kids games, BMX Bikes demonstrations, Mothers Exotic Car Paddock, Driver autograph sessions, and live concerts on Friday and Saturday nights. If that’s not enough, walk to dozens of bars and restaurants in downtown Long Beach .

Friday is mostly practice - its cheaper to get in and still a lot to see and do. it doesn’t get very crowded either. It’s a good day to come if you just want to see what it’s all about. Spot one of the many jumbotron screens and you can watch the live CCTV feed from most anywhere on the track every day. Saturday is mostly qualifying - it cost more than Friday and it gets more crowded but it’s a good day if you only want to come once over the weekend. It’s a great day to be able to move around more freely and see more of everything. Sunday is the big day when the feature race takes place with the Indycar series. It costs the most and gets the most crowded, but if you’re a race fan, it’s the most exciting day. The previous days of the week are filled with many parties and events like the Grand Prix Charities golf tournament, Official parties, and dinners. Before and between the races, there is plenty of time to walk around the expo to check out cool car models, accessories, new car toys and games, and other merchandise - A whole bunch of displays in automotive, home, recreation, travel and entertainment products and services. A part of the convention center, the arena, is set up for kids -- air pumped slides and jumpers, trampolines, bungee jumps, toy car races, and a mini shooting range. The people watching at these races is epic, you get all walks of life and social status together to enjoy car racing and you may even spot some celebrities. If you have never experienced an Indy Car race, this is a great spot to do it. The backdrop of Long Beach affords an idyllic background to this event. So check it out, April 17-19th!

tracks I-5 although the roadways remain largely invisible to one other. The next town is Maricopa, famous as the site of America’s largest oil spill. The 1910 Lakeview Gusher released 9 million barrels twice that of Deepwater Horizon a century later. Little remains but a lunar landscape of congealed crude, which you can marvel at on Petroleum Club Road, about a mile east of Route 33. Sadly, most storefronts are boarded up and abandoned and you can buy a house in Maricopa for $38K. A few miles farther along is the town of Taft and the West Kern Oil Museum. It features an early classroom, Indian artifacts, scores of old tools and a replica of one of 7,000 wooden derricks that once dominated the landscape. My favorite display is the Jurassic skeleton of a saber-toothed tiger. Also, be sure and visit the largest bronze sculpture in California. Sculptor Benjamin Victor - from Taft, created a stunning sculpture depicting the blood, sweat and tears of this historic oil town. Leaving Taft, the twisties give way to long straightaways peppered with slow sweeping curves. The flat landscape is filled with thousands of oil derricks and bobbing pump jacks. Swirling dust devils dance over this barren terrain. Years of drought have left ranches desolate and deserted. Thousands of acres of farmland lie bone dry with topsoil reduced to sand. Once a flourishing agricultural community, the families have fled and now oil is the only commodity. The sun knelt, the rose dried and forever lost was the promised land.
California Dream Roads State Routes 33 and 58 are amongst several of California’s dream motorcycle roads. Combined, they represent over 180 miles of motorcycle friendly riding. The southern start point of SR 33 begins in the seaside mission town of Ventura at the Pier. This I know because I wrote the book: “Piers of the West Coast – Travelled on Two Wheels”. (Shameless self-promotion). The Deck at Eric Ericson’s restaurant at the base of Ventura Pier is a great place to grab a bite and ponder the trek ahead. This journey will be on a 2015 Victory Magnum. Taking advantage of the big-wheel bagger craze, the Magnum is riding on a 21-inch front wheel boasting the largest rim on any production bagger. Victory thinks the Magnum is oriented more toward urban use, and that the Magnum buyer is the extrovert who wants to be seen and heard around town, as opposed to the long-distance rider who wants to get away from it all. I will put that to the test because this extrovert is definitely getting away from it all. The salty smell of sea air quickly fades as the 4

lanes of highway 33 (Ojai Fwy) pass horsehead pump jacks perpetually bobbing for oil and then suddenly, it ends. A two lane road begins twisting its way into the dramatic Topa Toa Mountains into Casitas Springs. Once the residence to Johnny Cash; he built his dream home here but only 7 years later, he left for good. It went to Vivian Cash in a divorce. Several miles further is the quaint town of Ojai. If you skipped lunch at the pier, try the Deer Lodge located right on 33. It’s Ojai’s oldest eatery and opened in 1932. They serve up wild game; few establishments in Southern California are brave enough to serve deer to their patrons, or mount a Jackalope head on the wall. Continuing on 33, be sure to get a photo-op in Wheeler Springs at the narrow shed with an illustrious title - “USA’s Smallest Post Office” - bestowed by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. This is where Route 33 slices through Los Padres National Forest and it’s here the road gets exciting. It follows Matilija Canyon past the easternmost extremity of the Santa Ynez Mountains, and passes over the Transverse Ranges at Pine Mountain Summit at a little over 5000 ft. The temperature cools, and the scent of Pine fills the air.
The pavement here is excellent and traffic nonexistent. The vistas are spectacular and the diversity of landscape is awesome. There are “big sky” views but lots of twisties and hairpins to keep you focused on the road. Her sultry curves may seduce you to speed but beware, there are some deep canyon drop offs and no guardrails. Weekends bring out a lot of sport bikes so if you can take this ride during the week, you will own the road.
50 miles past Taft is Blackwell’s Corner in Lost Hills. It was here at this juncture of 33 and 46 that James Dean gassed up his speedy Porsche for the last time. Be sure to gas up yourself and take a good look around inside. It’s chock full of “Deanobilia”. The food is good and jam-packed with locally grown almonds, pistachios, walnuts, jams and jellies. I suggest getting a jar of pecan honey butter and some homemade fudge at the East of Eden Fudge Factory. If you continue east bound on California Hwy 46 for about 25 miles, you will come to the spot Dean wrecked the 550 Spyder on that fateful day of September 30th 1955. “Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die tomorrow.” James Dean. Channeling James Dean at Blackwell’s Corner along SR33, the last place he was seen alive.
It’s here at Blackwell’s Corner I decide to take Bitterwater Valley Road south to catch SR 58. Only a mile away, it’s a paved one-laner that cuts through open central California cow pastures. What a fun 30 miles of solitude and scenery it turned out to be. The SR58; the Blue Star Memorial Highway is another California motorcycle dream ride. The road between McKittrick and Santa Margarita reveals 71 miles of motorcycle bliss. It has all the necessary ingredients and then some for the making of a great motorcycle road: great pavement, little traffic, beautiful landscape and the obligatory corners twisties with sweepers and hairpins, and long straights with a roller coaster section of whoop-tees to boot. The road crosses over the San Andreas fault line and you can tour the fault line by visiting the Carrizo Plans National Monument just to the East of the 58. The great roads around here just keep coming! If you haven’t had enough, catch Pozo road off 58 just before Santa Margarita to the Pozo Saloon. The historic Pozo Saloon has been a San Luis Obispo County landmark since 1858. It’s a trip back in time to one of the most authentic examples of a Wild West saloon. It is also renowned for their Pozo Martini and concerts by Willie Nelson, The Black Crowes, Lynyrd Skynyrd to Snoop Dogg. The dream ride never ends here. Four lanes become two, then one-way paved roads through cow pastures become dirt paths to a saloon or old red barn. SR 33 and 58 combine for 180 miles of endless snaking twists and turns, sweepers, dips and whoop-de-doo’s. It’s a fabulous, sometimes challenging, always spectacular motorcycle ride. Sport bike or Magnum Bagger, this is a ride you will savor. I can’t remember when at day’s end, my clutch hand strained to hold a cold beer and my right calf actually cramped from dancing on the brakes; a wonderful misery indeed. Tips: Never pass gas: Taft to Santa Margarita is an 80 mile stretch with NO gas stations. Don’t rely only on GPS: I encountered confused motorists taken astray by their GPS. There will be dicey cell service at best, typically none. Do not ride these roads at night; they are full of wandering wildlife. Carry water!
Pine Mountain Inn north of Ojai was a biker mecca. Opened circa 1939, it boasted “the purtiest” waitresses, best food, lowest prices and only flush toilets within 14 miles in any direction. It was an old-fashioned western bar and looks just that way today. The stools are old tractor seats, a couple of rattlesnake skins stretched on boards and 200 bottles of beer in the wall create a window that throws a moody light over the bar. Unfortunately, the rustic hangout has been closed since 2005, mostly the result, owner Tom Wolf says, of Ventura County officials rezoning his land without telling him they were about to do so. After miles of motorcycling nirvana, this road descends into Kern County and becomes the Petroleum Highway. Swerving east then north

Gloria Struck Story written by/photos by Smiles I’ve been to several ladies garage parties in years past at a few of the local dealerships. They are always a great event for the promotion of motorcycle riding for women. These parties are tailored for ladies who think they might want to learn how to ride, or have questions about being a woman in a predominantly man’s world of motorcycling. There is usually a guest speaker, hors d’ouvres and drinks, and several different activities throughout the evening. There might be a presentation on riding gear and the importance thereof. Sometimes we get to see a demonstration on the proper way to pick up a motorcycle. We also get to see some of the options that are out there to customize our motorcycle, when we decide to buy one and become a part of this world. There are usually also a couple of vendors on site too with some really cool stuff for sale.
All of these, in and of themselves, are great strategies used to instill a level of confidence in the woman who is curious to see if motorcycling is right for them. At Chester’s Harley Davidson in Mesa, Arizona, on a Sunday night in mid February, a garage party was held. And was the turnout ever spectacular!! There were close to 100 women in attendance, but as it would turn out, a good majority of these women are already riders. It was a nice site to look at the full parking lot, knowing these were all ladies motorcycles. We were all there to support those ladies who don’t ride yet, but in addition to that, we were also there to hear the guest speaker of the night, Gloria Tramontin Struck. Gloria was there to speak to all of us and tell us her story of growing up in a world when women weren’t supposed to be riding motorcycles. Gloria is legend in her own right! Born in Clifton, New Jersey 1925, in an apartment behind the family business, the Lexington Cycle Shop, Gloria was a little bit timid and a very shy person. As a child and young teenager, she never really wanted to learn how to ride. However, her older brother “Bub” was very persistent. Even more persistent than her foot stomping behind her very vocal “No, I don’t want to learn!” As it turns out, she learned how to ride. She learned on an old Indian Army motorcycle when she was 16 years old. Then she had a 1941 Bonneville Scout and a 1946 Indian Chief before she finally got a brand new 1950 Harley Davidson, which was the first of many Harley motorcycles in her repertoire. There was nothing stopping her after that. She was on her way to countless years of riding her own motorcycle. Her passion is long distance riding, easily doing 600 mile plus days. Some
of her destinations have included the Sturgis and Daytona rallies. In 1946 Gloria joined the Motor Maids. Established in 1940, the Motor Maids is a women’s motorcycling organization, one of the first and oldest women’s clubs in the United States. Gloria is known as the Matriarch of the Motor Maids. Representing several different states, there was other Motor Maids present, showing HUGE support for Gloria. It was impressive, to say the least, to see the contingencies from around the country there that night. Gloria had stated that a few years back she had set a goal for herself of riding a motorcycle (2 wheels of course, because “anyone can ride 3 wheels”) until she turned 90 years old. Well, she turns 90 this summer, and is still going strong, so she announced that she has upped her goal. Now her intentions are to still be riding when she turns 100 years old! I am highly respectful of this woman, what she represents and what she has overcome in the years of riding when riding wasn’t acceptable for ladies. I am amazed at how young and full of life this woman is, at 89 years old. She truly makes it look easy.
To think that if I keep going strong for another 40 plus years, I can be where she’s at, and still be riding MY own motorcycle. That is a worthy goal for myself that I am looking forward to pursuing!! If you ever get a chance to hear Gloria speak, I highly recommend doing so! Gloria, keep up your youthful spirit and tenacity!! You are a true inspiration for so many ladies of every generation!! Thank you, Chester’s HD, for acquiring her as the guest speaker, and for such a great garage party. I’m looking forward to the next one.

ANTI-PROFILING MEASURES SPREAD NATIONWIDE - NCOMLTF UPDATE: This is one of the most exciting and productive Legislative seasons we have had in a very long time, as a unified community and as a freedom seeking culture. We are moving towards our goal of Critical Mass in establishing a National Movement to end Motorcycle Profiling with eight States in the process of Bill sponsorship, committee hearings or have already passed anti-profiling protection. Once we reach that tipping point, look out Washington D.C.! I met with the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus Co-Chair and discussed a National AntiProfiling Bill, and he’s willing to listen. Currently from Washington State across the country to New York State and including; California, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Maryland, North Carolina, Missouri, all have motorcycle anti-profiling bills. The NCOM Legislative Task Force is accessible when called upon by any, and willing to assist providing a cohesive plan to help insure success with; “Lessons Learned from Washington State”, Fiscal analysis, Collecting a Pattern of Evidence, Controlling the Message when giving Testimony, all are substantiated documents authored by our own US Defender Commander from Washington and NCOM LTF Vice Chair, Double D, who is willing to travel and provide excellent testimony to accompany the effort from any State. We have launched a campaign Nationwide to “Save the Patch”; the many facets of our network continue to raise funds contributing to the Trademark Defense Fund regarding the Mongols MC patch. It is a Unifying Event for everyone across the country, and it is going to take all of us participating to defeat this discriminatory attack on our patches! As we speak, another case involving the Devils Diciples MC copyrighted patch is under attack as well. LTF members are in strategic meetings to develop a plan to fight this case. A new attitude, a new Mission Statement defining who we are, and a revival of fundamentals that work. Look at our roster, the best of the best. Historic! Our NCOM BOD and the LTF reflects an accurate snapshot of our motorcycling community at large. We are members of every organization in the motorcycle rights work arena. So the time is

LANE SPLITTING COULD MOVE BEYOND CALIFORNIA California is the only state in the U.S. where motorcyclists are allowed to cruise between lanes of cars, a practice called lane-splitting that is normally used to cut through stalled or slow-moving traffic. But now, an effort to legalize lane-splitting in other states, such as Washington, Oregon, Texas and Tennessee, is gathering momentum amid a push by motorcyclists and by some lawmakers looking to relieve highway congestion. Bills to extend the practice to other states has sparked a safety debate, and although no one has tracked exactly how many highway accidents are caused by lane-splitting, a study from the California Office of Traffic Safety last year found that motorcyclists’ injuries were kept down as long as they split lanes in slowly moving traffic and exceeded the speed of other traffic by less than 10 miles an hour. Further, the study found that motorcyclists were less likely to die or be injured in lane-splitting crashes when compared with other kinds of collisions. The lane-splitting measures in Washington (SB 5623 & HB 1515), Oregon (SB 172 & SB 420), Texas (SB 442 & HB 813) and Tennessee (HB 1102) all set varying limits to motorcyclists’ speed and speed differential. Most of those bills are in committee, although Washington state’s measure has passed the state Senate 35-14.
HANDLEBAR HEIGHT LAW REPEALED IN SOUTH DAKOTA Good news for those riding to the 75th Anniversary Sturgis Rally this year, as South Dakota has abolished their handlebar height law, so as of July 1st ape hangers will now be legal and no more 20-dollar-tickets for bars taller than shoulder-high. On Tuesday, February 24, 2015 Governor Dennis Daugaard signed Senate Bill 85, joining 13 other states with no handlebar restrictions (Arkansas,
Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee). Pointing out that there are no national laws that regulate handlebar height, nor commonly agreed upon standards between states, ABATE of South Dakota emphasized personal comfort and style over safety concerns, given that no scientific studies identify any negative impact. “A great team effort,” cites ABATE state coordinator Jiggs Creasy. “Not a single opponent testified and not a single vote against it (SB 85 passed unanimously in the Senate 34-0 on 02/05/15 and passed the House of Representatives 69-0 on 02/17/15).”
UNITED FRONT HELPS TO DEFEAT HELMET LAW PROPOSALS IN NEW MEXICO In a unique “Pay-to-Play” scheme to punish motorcyclists for exercising their right to ride without a helmet, a Senate bill proposed in New Mexico would have created a system of taxation for riders who opt not to wear a helmet. Specifically, SB 308 would have created an annual motorcycle $697 license plate sticker that allowed the operator and passenger to refrain from wearing a helmet, for a fee. It and a full blown helmet law (SB 327) were both heard in committee on the same day, and each bill died. “February 24, 2015 is a day that will live in New Mexico Motorcycle History as two helmet bills died in the Senate Public Affairs Committee,” said Annette Torrez, Chair of the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization and a member of the NCOM Board of Directors. Torrez had issued a call to action, requesting assistance from the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), the NCOM Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF), US Defenders, Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) and the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), all of which came to the aid of NM riders to help defeat the onerous proposals. “Together we can accomplish the possible and the impossible,” said Torrez. “Now we can put our efforts into SB 651, the Careless Driving Bill to increase penalties for a person who commits careless driving that result in death or great bodily harm.”

Q: Bill, San Diego, California. DynoSteve, Here’s a dyno question: I ride a 2012 Harley TriGlide (bought in California) that I converted to stage 1. It has a Screamin’ Eagle Air Cleaner, stock Harley exhaust pipes with a built in catalytic converter, Vance and Hines slip on mufflers and with the Harley ECM remapped for this combination. The situation: The Harley California exhaust pipes have a catalytic converter already inside the exhaust pipe collector adjacent to my right foot. It gets so hot that it has melted the wiring harness sheath along the lower right frame rail. The Harley shop is making a warranty claim and checking other engine parameters, but privately recommends taking out the catalytic converter. This can be done easily by buying a set of non-California Vance and Hines exhaust pipes without a built in catalytic converter that will fit the 2012 Triglide. The question: If I install V&H exhaust pipes without a catalytic converter, keeping the same V&H slip on mufflers, and same Screaming Eagle air cleaner do I need to remap the ECM again? It seems to boil down to the question of whether the total airflow of the current stage 1 configuration from intake to out the exhaust system is limited by the intake or the exhaust portion. If total air flow is limited by the Screaming Eagle intake side, changing the outflow exhaust capability to flow more would not seem to require a remap. While if airflow is limited by the exhaust side of the current configuration of the Harley catalytic converter pipes with V&H slip on mufflers, then a remap is likely in order. Your opinion please? Thanks.

A: This is a great question, and you are not alone. The head pipe configuration you are talking about is on every touring model built after 2010, so this is not just a California issue. This catalytic converter makes a lot of extra heat, so much heat that Harley-Davidson even had to recall the rear brake lamp switch. I would definitely suggest changing out this head pipe. Not only will it eliminate your heat issue, you will also see an increase in top end power out of your ride. Changing your head pipe will affect your exhaust flow and your bike will need to be dyno tuned. If you want to stick with a Vance & Hines product I would recommend the power dual head pipe. It is a 2:1:2 design. This will help you maintain your bottom end torque. There are also a couple of companies that do an exchange program to remove the catalytic converter. This will let you use all of your stock heat shield and keep the look of your ride.

Hello, okay so here’s my problem. I’ve always loved motorcycles since I was little, and now that I’m old enough to ride a bike in Peru (moved here a while ago, you have to be at least 18 to drive any kind of vehicle) I want to learn with my father’s bike. He has a Yamaha TT600 but it’s really heavy and big and he thinks I’m gonna mess up his bike, hahaha, anyway, is it a good idea to start learning with a TT600? Or should I wait and buy something smaller like a Honda CBR125. I’m 5’7ft and somewhat skinny. Thanks!
A: I definitely understand your love for motorcycles and your desire to ride. I do think that your dads TT might be too tall for you. If you are wanting a street bike be sure you can put both feet flat on the ground and have a slight bend in your knee, this will make it much easier to hold up. As for the engine size, I think a 600cc is a good place to start. It does have quite a bit more power than a 125cc, and you don’t want a bike that you will outgrow too soon. Smaller displacement bikes will get boring too quickly. When that happens you lose some respect for the machine, and that’s when you get hurt. A little bit of fear is good for keeping you on your toes. Here are a few things a new rider should keep in mind; 1) Always wear boots that have good grip, always wear gloves, always wear eye protection (even while in a full face), and wear a helmet; 2) Assume that no car will see you; 3) Also assume that every car on the road IS TRYING TO KILL YOU!!! 4) You will drop your bike; everybody does it (and it will most likely happen when a cute girl is

looking at you). You will crash a bike, it will scare you, you will be okay.
With all that being said, riding a motorcycle is one of the most fun and freeing things you will ever do.

DynoSteve, I have a 2014 Street Glide. I am ready to do a Stage 1, but I’m not sure of which tuner to get for it. I’ve tried looking on some Harley forums and I seem to get as many answers as there are forums. Thunder Max, Direct Link, TTS Master Tune, Power Commander, Power Vision, Super Tuner, Fuel Pak, TFI. This is my first fuel injected bike so this is all new to me. Please help! Thanks. - Art
when I was out of state on a ride with some friends. The bike started to miss slightly. At the next stop I changed the spark plugs and everything seemed to be fine. It started happening again this time a little worse than before. I pulled the plugs and they looked fine. As the trip went on this miss or hiccup, as it is seemed to be, was now was getting bothersome. I did notice this happening only around 2500-3000 RPMs. Below or above it would run great. As we got closer to home the most terrifying thing
A: Well Art, you are right about having a lot of choices for fuel management, but it really comes down to personal preference. There are two general types of tuners that you can get. The first type is a piggyback unit that modifies the signal to the injectors and coils. The benefits of going this route is you move it from bike to bike, the unit generally costs less, and they typically perform well. The downside is that it is a separate module that you will need to have mounted on your bike; if you take it off, you also lose your tune. The second type re-flashes the ECM but is removable after the tune is done. These can only be used on one bike and cost a little more but there is nothing extra on your motorcycle and its one less thing that can potentially fail. As far as piggyback modules go, I would suggest DynoJet’s Power Commander; it has over 200 cells for fuel and ignition per cylinder which make it one of the few truly tunable piggyback modules. There is a much greater variety of high quality ECM flashing tuners than there are of piggyback modules, and they have wider parameters and control over the ECM meaning you can have a more precise tune, which works well especially with exotic or heavily customized engine builds. The Power Vision (also made by Dyno Jet) or the TTS Master Tune work great but, by far, my favorite is the Screamin’ Eagle Super Tuner. The reason I like the Super Tuner so much has nothing to do with the quality of tune it produces, but I like the layout of the user interface in the program I use to tune it. All three of those products can be used for great tunes, but different dyno tuners may recommend different ones based on their particular style of tuning. By all means go with what they have the most experience using as it will more than likely get you the best possible tune for your bike. On a side note, any professional will advise you to avoid a “tuner” that only has buttons or dials to adjust your settings. These are not actual dyno tuning devices and though it may seem like a cheap and easy option, the only results you will really get from these contraptions is less money in

happened, the bike just stopped running! As I sat on the side of the road checking everything I could think of, I tried restarting the bike. It fired right up and ran great. A while later it quit again. I was getting close to home by this point so I figured I could limp it home. Now home I started changing out some parts; new coil, new plug wires, new crank sensor. No luck. No change. Right around 2500-3000 RPMs it will miss bad or just quit running. If I try to restart it while still rolling it won’t start. If I shut it off the ignition for a short time it will restart. Is this a heat related problem? Please help I’m at my wits end! Thank you.
A: Don’t worry Jon, although it seems like a nightmare of a problem to figure out, I have an answer for you. This is not a heat related problem; this is a vibration problem. Your bike is equipped with a safety feature called a Bank Angle Sensor (BAS), that monitors the angle that bike is relative to the ground. Once your bike leans over 55 degrees the BAS will kill the engine. This is a great feature to have in case of an accident or spill but unfortunately can also cause some problems in certain models of bikes. On the ‘99 model year this sensor is mounted to a very thin bracket and when the vibration is just right the sensor mistakenly sends the signal that the bike has fallen over which then shuts off the engine. All you have to do is avoid riding between 2000-3000 RPMs. Just kidding! Harley is well aware of this problem and issued a recall. As you are the second owner of this bike, it is possible that you did not get the notice. Behind your left side cover you will find a small black box (about ¾” x ¾”) with a three wire plug. If the recall has been performed you will see an extra piece of metal on the mount. If this extra piece is there then you will need a new BAS; if it is not there go to your home dealer and they will fix this for free (if the recall has not been performed). No worries now Jon, let’s go ride!
