KEY FEATURES
SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE. GREATER EVERYDAY USABILITY. The advantage offered by the Ninja ZX-6R’s greater 37cc displacement is significant for real world riding exhilaration. Unmatched performance across the rpm range is welcome when sport riding, both in the hills and on the racetrack. But maximised low and midrange torque also offers increased usability in everyday street-riding situations, like riding in stop-andgo city traffic, or accelerating to pass another vehicle on the highway. A race-inspired clutch offers both a back-torque limiting function as well as a much lighter feel at the lever.

KEY FEATURES
636cc In-Line Four engine * The engine features a longer stroke to increase engine displacement to 636cc. Bore and stroke change as follows: Displacement Bore x Stroke
2012 ZX600R 599cc 67.0 x 42.5 mm
2015 ZX636E/F 636cc 67.0 x 45.1 mm
* With the increased displacement, engine performance increases at all rpm. In particular, low-mid range torque is stronger. (Illustration A) * Both intake and exhaust ports were idealised to suit the engine’s large displacement and to deliver increased performance and improved power feeling. The intake ports are wider near the throttle bodies and the passages to the valves split earlier. The exhaust ports are wider near the exhaust valves.
* Piston crown accommodates the increased valve lift. Compression ratio is also reduces to 12.9:1 (previously 13.3:1) for optimised performance with the 636cc displacement. The crown revisions from 2013 offer increased piston strength. (Photo 1) * Molybdenum coating on piston skirts reduces friction and facilitates engine break-in. * Piston pins (previously tapered, now straight) have increased rigidity. * Connecting rods are stronger and shorter to suit the engines power. The thick stems (14-16 mm taper) and larger-radius small ends (22.5 mm) add strength.
* Camshafts take advantage of the 636cc displacement. Increaced intake cam duration, and lift for both the intake and exhaust cams result in increased peak power.

KEY FEATURES * Large-volume air cleaner box (5,090 cm3) contributes to increased peak power and smooth power delivery. * Longe, single-bore intake funnels contribute to low-mid range focused engine performance. Two different funnel shapes (#1 and #4 are the same; #2 and #3 are the same) help deliver the optimised power feeling. * Ultra-fine atomising injectors with a droplet size of less than 60 μm ensure efficient air-fuel mixing contributing to combustion efficiency. More precise settings contribute to reduced emissions. The injectors flow a greater volume of fuel to accommodate the 636cc displacement.
* Silencer’s triangular crosssection enables the requisite volume while ensuring a high lean angle and a compact image. (Photos 4-5)

KEY FEATURES
Race-derived clutch technology * F.C.C. Assist & Slipper Clutch was developed based on racetrack feedback. The clutch uses two types of cams, an assist cam and a slipper cam. (Photo 6,
6
* When the engine is operating at normal rpm the assist cam functions as a self-servo mechanism, pulling the clutch hub and operating plate together to compress the clutch plates. This allows the total clutch spring load to be reduced, resulting in a lighter clutch lever pull when operating the clutch. Fewer (3, vs 6 on the ZX600R) clutch springs translate to a 20% lighter clutch lever feel. * Assist cam also enables the clutch torque capacity to be increased (to match the strong engine) without gaining weight.
Illustration B)
* When excessive engine braking occurs – as a result of quick downshifts (or an accidental downshift) – the slipper cam comes into play, forcing the clutch hub and operating plate apart. This relieves pressure on the clutch plates to reduce back-torque and help prevent the rear tire from hopping and skidding.
B
* Use of a spring plate assembly in the clutch contributes to smoother clutch engagement and helps minimise clutch vibration (judder) noise.
Transmission * A shorter 1st gear ratio facilitates moving off from a stop, contributing to everyday usability. * Gear material and thickness the increased torque of the 636cc engine.

KEY FEATURES
ENHANCED CHASSIS PERFORMANCE: TRACKDAY TO EVERYDAY With chassis settings focused on delivering the best performance on winding roads, the Ninja ZX-6R is better equipped to cover a wider range of riding applications than the ZX600R. Of course, it offers riders a high level of track performance, but when the road is less that racetrack-smooth, the Ninja ZX-6R’s light handling, SFF-BP front fork, monobloc calipers, natural sport riding position and more compliant settings will let it continue to shine.

KEY FEATURES
Light, nimble handling * Frame, rear frame and swingarm are essentially unchanged from the ZX600R, providing a highly balanced chassis package as a familiar starting point. The base frame components offer a superb balance of flickable handling, mid-corner stability and an ability to change lines on command, coupled with excellent chassis feedback. (Photo 7)
* Steep caster angle (23.5°) contributes to lighter handling. * Chassis dimensions are essentially the same as those on the ZX600R. However, the fork tube height is 2 mm higher: lowering the front end adds to the more nimble handling on winding roads.
8
7
* Steering stem seal design reduces steering friction, offering noticeably improved handling around 50-60 km/h. * Bridgestone S20 tires offer superb road holding performance.

KEY FEATURES
Next-generation fork: SFF-BP (Separate Function Fork – Big Piston) * Combining the concepts of Showa SFF and BPF, the fork features springs on both sides, with preload adjustability in the left tube and damping duties in the right tube.
9
(Photo 9, Illustration C)
* Thin ( 1.7 mm) fork tube walls contribute to weight savings.
* Like with the BPF, smooth action at the initial part of the stroke contributes to excellent composure under braking. The large-diameter damping piston is much larger than that used in a cartridge-type fork of the same size. Because oil inside the fork acts on a much larger surface area, this allows the damping pressure to be reduced while ensuring the same damping force. Reducing the damping pressure allows the slide pipe to move more smoothly, which is especially noticeable at the initial part of the stroke. The result is greater control as the fork begins to compress and very calm attitude change as vehicle weight shifts forward when reducing speed, offering greater chassis stability on corner entry. * Fork settings were idealised for winding roads. This not only enables a high level of performance for the track, it much better accommodates highway and city riding.
C
* SFF-BP offers much easier adjustability. All the adjusters are located at the top of the fork tubes (on the fork caps): preload on the left; compression and rebound damping on the right. Each component need only be adjusted once (rather than once per side). (Photos 10-11)

KEY FEATURES
Rear suspension
Brake system equipped with monobloc calipers
* Layout is essentially the same as that on the 2012 ZX600R, but increased spring length (190 mm 215 mm), softer spring rate, and higher lever ratios that allow the shock to be compressed more easily all contribute to rear ride comfort, offering a more plush feeling when riding in town or on the highway. (Photo 12-13)
12
13
* The Ninja ZX-6R is equipped with powerful, highly rigid, radial-mount Nissin monobloc calipers, offering superb control and a firmer feel at the lever. The lightweight calipers offer increased heat dissipation. (Photo 15)
15
* Larger-diameter semi-floating 310 mm stainless-steel front petal discs contribute to stronger braking.
* Radial-pump master cylinder ensures excellent touch and offers superb control. (Photo 16) * A 220 mm petal disc slows the rear. (Photo 17) * Adjustability for the rear shock includes preload, rebound damping and compression damping.
14
* Lighter rear brake caliper from the Ninja ZX-10R offers good anti-fade performance and control. * Rear brake pedal is mounted coaxially with the footpeg for good braking efficiency mid-stroke and excellent brake pedal feel.

KEY FEATURES
Ergonimics * Riding position is essentially the same as that of the 2012 ZX600R. Kawasaki’s Ninja supersport seatpegs-bar relationship offers a naturally intuitive position for sport riding. (Photos
18
* Seat is short frontto-back, allowing the rider to rest his tailbone on the rear seat step, further contributing to the excellent feedback the rider gets from the chassis. (Photo 21)
21
18-19) *2013 model shown
19
* The seat narrows at the front, contributing to the slim riding position and facilitating the reach to the pavement. Although the seat height (830 mm) is slightly higher than on the 2012 ZX600R, with the softer suspension settings the bike settles at about the same height once the rider is seated. * Front cowl and windscreen offer good wind protection for sport riding. (Photo 22)
* Flared fuel tank cover makes it easier for the rider to rest the inside of his arm on the tank when leaning into a turn. The large contact patch contributes to feedback for the rider.

KEY FEATURES
FULLY LOADED: ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY The Ninja ZX-6R is loaded with the latest technological systems that Kawasaki has to offer. Its traction control system is the same as found on the flagship Ninja ZX-14R – more advanced even than that of the Ninja ZX-10R. Combined with two selectable Power Modes, this offers riders eight combinations covering a wide range of riding situations. And, like the 10R, ABS models are equipped with KIBS, a highly advanced system design specifically for supersport models.
3-Mode KTRC (Kawasaki TRaction Control) Featuring the same system used on the 2012 Ninja ZX-14R flagship, the KTRC system on the Ninja ZX-6R combines the best elements of Kawasaki’s two traction control systems, S-KTRC and KTRC. Three modes cover a wide range of riding conditions, offering either enhanced sport riding performance or the peace of mind to negotiate slippery surfaces with confidence.
* Riders can choose from three modes. Modes 1 and 2 prioritise maximum forward acceleration (like the S-KTRC system on the 2011 Ninja ZX-10R). Mode 3 is similar to the KTRC system offered on the 2010 Concours 14 ABS, providing rider reassurance by facilitating smooth riding on slippery surfaces. Riders may also elect to turn the system off. * Compared to the three modes offered by the Ninja ZX-10R’s S-KTRC (which was designed to allow riders to enjoy experimenting with various combinations of settings as they tune their bike for particular corners on the circuit), the effects of Modes 1, 2 and 3 are much easier to distinguish and cover a much wider range of riding conditions. * In Modes 1 and 2, highly sophisticated programming allows a degree of slip – a certain amount of slip is required to maximise acceleration. The ideal slip ratio varies according to conditions. The system looks at a number of parameters to get an accurate real-time picture of what is going on: front and rear wheel speed (slippage) and various engine, machine and rider input parameters are monitored. * Using complex analysis, the system is able to predict when traction conditions are about to become unfavourable. By acting before slippage exceeds the range for optimal traction, drops in power can be minimised, resulting in ultra-smooth operation.
2 0 1 5 M Y N I N J A Z X - 6 R M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N
1 5
KEY FEATURES * Conditions are confirmed every 5 milliseconds, and control via ignition timing allows extremely quick reaction. * In Mode 3 (the most intrusive) the same logic and control as in Modes 1 and 2 is employed during normal operation. However, when excessive rear wheel spin is detected, Mode 3 switches to three-way control – governing ignition timing, fuel delivery and airflow (via the sub-throttles) – and engine output is reduced to a level that allows the rear wheel to regain grip. It is the control of the sub-throttles that enables smooth operation. This fine control results in a very natural feeling: engagement is smooth, on/off transition is smooth, and stability is maintained during extended operation. * In Mode 3, KTRC effectively enables riders to negotiate both short slippery patches (train tracks or manhole covers) and extended stretches of bad road (wet pavement, cobblestone, gravel, etc) without worry. Wheel spin is also limited when starting on a slippery surface.
* By default, KTRC is always ON when the engine is started. (The mode will be the same as when the engine was turned off, or in Mode 1 if the system had been turned off.) To ride with KTRC off, riders must consciously turn the system OFF (using the mode button on the left grip). (Photo 23)
23
* The system is also able to distinguish between torque wheelies, which are smooth, and sudden wheelies, which can be dangerous. In Modes 1 and 2, torque wheelies are allowed as long as acceptable acceleration is maintained. Sudden wheelies trigger system intervention. In Mode 3, all wheelies are prevented. * The system uses minimal hardware but complex software. Apart from the engine ECU, the system relies on only front and rear wheel speed sensors – which means minimal additional weight (none, in the case of ABS models, which already have wheel speed sensors).

1 6
KEY FEATURES
Supersport-grade ABS: KIBS (Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System) (ZX636F only) * KIBS is a multi-sensing system, using input from numerous sources. In addition to front and rear wheel speed sensors (standard for any ABS system), KIBS also monitors front caliper hydraulic pressure and various information from the engine ECU (throttle position, engine speed, clutch actuation and gear position). It is the first massproduction motorcycle system to feature communication between the engine ECU and ABS ECU. (Photos 24-25)
24
25
* Supersport models pitch more than most motorcycles, so there is a greater tendency for the rear to lift under hard braking. By monitoring front caliper hydraulic pressure, KIBS is able to regulate pressure increases, reducing the tendency of the rear to lift. This happens in two situations: 1) Before conditions require ABS intervention, KIBS prevents the pressure from increasing too quickly, thus suppressing rear lift, and 2) after ABS has decreased pressure to prevent wheel lock, KIBS ensures pressure is not returned too quickly, preventing a sudden increase that could induce rear lift. Suppressing this tendency contributes to enhanced braking stability. * Precise control of front caliper pressure also enables KIBS to minimise kickback during operation. Pressure is increased in small amounts and slips are minimised, resulting in a very smooth operating feel. This of course translates to minimal distraction to the rider during sport riding. (Illustration D)
D
* This high-precision brake pressure control enables the system to avoid reduced brake performance due to excessive pressure drops, allows lever feel to be maintained when KIBS is active, and ensures ABS pulses feel light (not heavy). * Precision brake pressure control also offers a number of sport riding benefits: 1. Rear lift suppression 2. Minimal kickback during operation 3. Accounting for back-torque
2 0 1 5 M Y N I N J A Z X - 6 R M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N
1 7
KEY FEATURES * By accounting for back-torque, KIBS is able to offer increased rear brake control during downshifts. KIBS parameters include throttle position, clutch actuation and gear position, allowing the system to recognise engine backtorque from downshifting or getting off the gas at high rpm. Rear wheel slip due to engine braking often triggers ABS action on standard systems, but by preventing unnecessary ABS intervention in these situations, KIBS enables rear brake control to be maintained. * KIBS features a very compact, lightweight BOSCH ABS unit. Designed specifically for motorcycle use, it made its first mass-production appearance on the 2011 Ninja ZX-10R.
Power Mode selection * A choice of Full Power or Low Power modes allows riders to set power delivery to suit preference and conditions. While output at lower rpm is the same, Low Power mode limits output to approximately 80% of Full Power and uses a milder throttle response. (Reduction of both power and throttle response varies according to engine speed (rpm), throttle position and gear position.) (Illustration E) *
E
* Thanks to the compact size and light weight of the ABS unit, the system adds only 2 kg compared to the non-ABS models. * The unit is located close to the bike’s centre of gravity, behind the throttle bodies, beside the right frame rail.
Combining the KTRC and Power Mode options, riders have eight combinations from which to choose. For example, an experienced rider on dry pavement might choose Full Power and KTRC Mode 1 for sport riding. On a wet and/or slippery road surface, Low Power and KTRC Mode 3 might be selected. Each system can be set independently to best suit rider skill/preference, riding location and road conditions. * Like KTRC, Power Mode can also be controlled from the left grip.

KEY FEATURES
Engine * Catalysers in the collector pipe, an exhaust pre-chamber and a largervolume silencer ensure Euro-3 emissions regulations are met. * The exhaust pre-chamber makes efficient use of space, reducing exhaust noise and helping to minimise silencer volume. * Cassette transmission makes it easy to change gear ratios quickly, reducing necessary set-up time for trackdays. * Lightweight drive chain (same style as used on the Ninja ZX-10R) uses lightening holes on the inner link plates to reduce weight. * Generator with coils designed to produces less heat, reduces mechanical loss and saves weight.
Accessories * An adjustable Öhlins steering damper with twin-tube design is available as an accessory. The design ensures stable damping performance even under racing conditions, and enables superb kickback absorption. The damper’s high precision construction and use of an integrated clamp help minimise 31 friction as the damper piston slides back and forth. Initial motion is very smooth as a result. (Photo 31)
* Zero-cross control regulator significantly reduces electrical noise generated when short-circuiting the generator output.
Chassis * Mirror is designed to offer increased rearward visibility while maintaining the bike’s width. * The 2-piece rear frame is an aluminium die-casting consisting of a front and rear section. This layout enables a very precise, very lightweight construction. It is also very narrow, allowing the rear of the bike to be very compact and slim.
* In addition to its standard screen, original accessories include a bubble screen offering increased wind protection.
