4 BYTE DEVICE SUPPORT • VMAX3 is capable of supporting >64K TDEVs in the future – Up to 64K used 2 byte device numbers x’FFFF’ – >64K devices requires 4 Byte device numbers x’FFFFFFFF’
• MFE components and SYMAPI-MF now support for 4 byte device numbers as of MFE 8.0 • Displays and messages may use 6 characters in some products

GROUP NAME SERVICES SCALABILITY • GNS is used to define and share host-defined device group information (GNS groups) across hosts • GNS currently uses a ‘scratch area’ in VMAX cache to store GNS group information, which has the following limitations – Fixed size that cannot be easily expanded – Coarse serialization that leads to performance issues • GNS in VMAX3 uses Symmetrix File System • Improved Scalability to 100,000 groups (8K group size) – Improved performance • Note: SRDF/AR replacement pools (SARPOOLS) are no longer supported in V3. GNS support for these has been removed © Copyright 2016 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved.

PRIORITY QOS AND DCP REMOVAL • Priority QoS is removed beginning with 5977 HYPERMAX OS • The following commands have been removed from MFE – DISPSPC – DISPDEVP – SETSPC – SETDEVP • Dynamic cache partitioning commands have been removed from MFE –

GENERAL POOL MANAGEMENT IN MFE • GPM (MFE 7.6) background – GPM in ResourcePak Base supports management of the following pool types • THIN (for TDEVs) • SNAP (for TF/Snap save device) • DSE (for SRDF/A DSE ‘spillover’ devices)
– SCF provides capacity consumption monitoring for all three pool types – GPM does not provide any FAST VP controls

Disk Group
VIRTUAL (THIN) PROVISIONING CONCEPT • • •
Storage capacity is structured in data pools defined by RAID protection, drive technology, rotational speed Thin devices are logical volumes that are provisioned to hosts Workload is spread across all disks Host addressable device (CUUA)
STORAGE RESOURCE POOL

Thin Device (TDEV)
Thin Device Bound to Pool (BIND)
Thin Pool Data Devices (TDAT)
10
STORAGE RESOURCE POOL • A Storage Resource Pool (SRP) is a collection of data pools that make up a FAST Domain – A data pool can only be included in one SRP
• SRPs are defined in the BIN file – Not configurable by the customer
• The factory preconfigured array included one SRP that contains all the data pool in the array • Multiple SRPs can be configured at the site however.. – EMC recommends the use of a single SRP

11
GENERAL POOL MANAGEMENT ENHANCEMENTS • Support for THIN only (via new constructs) – THIN, DSE, and SAVE pool management controls and monitors remain for Enginuity 5876
• Support added for managing the following VMAX3 provisioning constructs – Storage Resource Pool (SRP) – Service Level (SL) – Storage Group (SYMSG)
• Note: Concept of TDEV BIND is removed • SRP, TDATs, TDAT pools (data pools) and Disk Groups are preconfigured at factory – User defines TDEVs (Unisphere or EMC Services), configures them into Storage Groups, and associates Storage Group with Service Level via GPM (or Unisphere) © Copyright 2016 EMC Corporation. ENHANCED SRDF REMOTE REPLICATION • Overall SRDF Enhancements – – – –
Lower response times Leverage Multiple cores and threads More Ports/Groups per RDF director 16Gb/s support - 4 port I/O Module
• SRDF/A Resiliency Improvements – Multi Cycle Mode – Improved RPO predictability

R2
• Allows more than two Delta Sets on Primary Site • Cycle are More Granular with Incremental Updates • Cycle switch occurs at Min Cycle Time, regardless • RPO at target is now more Granular & Predictable

19
MULTI-CYCLE MODE Prior mode is now called ‘legacy’ mode MSC requires all VMAXs to be 5977 for MCM mode MCM mode requires 5977 at both sites SRDF HC SQ SRDFA display indicates Legacy(L) or MCM (M) mode • DSE changes • • • •
– DSE eliminated at R2 side – DSE is enabled by default on R1 to an SRP – No read from R2 when DSE is active
• Group Write Pacing, if enabled, will pace at DSE spillover rate © Copyright 2016 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved.
20
SRDF MULTI PORT SUPPORT • 5977 now supports multiple ports (up to 16) per SRDF emulation instance • SRDF HC commands modified to operate on all ports of a director or a specific port • Commands that now include ‘port’ specification – – –
SC LINK SQ LINK SC RDFGROUP
• New command –
SQ VIEWRA – shows all connection information between two systems starting at 5876

21
REMOVAL OF SRDF ADAPTIVE COPY WP MODE • 5977 no longer supports AD Copy Write Pending mode for SRDF R1
– 5977 R2 devices can be the secondary of a 5876 5977 ADC-WP pair
• SRDF HC actions that request a 5977 R1 be put in ADC-WP result in the ADC-WP mode being converted to ADC-DISK mode – Example actions: ADCOPY_WP, SWAP(ADCOPY_WP), CREATEPAIR(ADCOPY_WP) – IF this is not desired user must terminate Adaptive Copy mode with a NADCOPY
• New Message for invalid requests: EMCCY10I ADCOPY_WP option not valid for config - converting to ADCOPY_DISK

22
MISCELLANEOUS SRDF HC CHANGES FOR VMAX3/5977 • SRDF HC supports SRDF connection between 5876 and 5977 (N-X) – Only Dynamic SRDF groups are supported in V3
• SRDF now supports HW compression on both FC and GigE SRDF • DSE is enabled by default and space is configured for it in the SRP • DSE space information in VMAX3 is now displayed via SRDF HC command #SQ SRDFA_DSE – DSE space is now in the SRP in VMAX, not a separate pool – Use of the Pool Management Utility no longer required to obtain information about DSE © Copyright 2016 EMC Corporation. 23
SRDF HC SC VOL COMMAND PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS • Problem: SRDF HC SC VOL operations on multiple ranges run excessively long • MFE 8.0 (and 7.6) have been enhanced to perform better on large ranges with 5875 and above • Applies to the following SC VOL operations – – – – – – –
