2017 Baroness Machinery 2017 EDITION TURFCARE DEALER OF THE YEAR 2016 www.listerwilder.co.uk AWARDS 2016-17 SERVICE DEALER [email protected] Baroness at Lister Wilder About Lister Wilder Lister Wilder are a wholly owned family company founded in 1947 as a machinery supplier based in Reading. We now operate from 9 depots, located across the south of England and employ over 200 people. The business hosts four divisions – groundcare and golf, agricultural, arb and plant and we remain solely focused in machinery sales and after sales services from these sectors. Our groundcare, golf and arb divisions really came to life back in 1995 when we were awarded with the Kubota franchise, then in 2011 we acquired the Baroness franchise and are now able to offer the great fine turf range of machinery from Baroness, providing a one stop shop for golf course managers and fine turf machinery operators right across the South of England. So what makes us different from any other dealers? Well the answer is our complete dedication to after sales and customer care, our company logo “Sales with service” signifies the ethos that is driven throughout the company and identifies our beliefs that we should always strive to achieve the highest possible standards of customer service. As part of our commitment to customer experience we employ over 76 on site engineers, ensuring that we can react to breakdowns and servicing requirements quickly. Added to this is our investment in technical training, specialist tools and experienced mechanics which ensures that we are able to offer an extremely high “First time fix” rate, in turn minimilising machinery down time and costs. Our Parts department stock holding of well over £3M worth of spare parts and experienced parts advisors ensures the best possibility of identifying and supplying the correct part , off the shelf , first time around. One of our key strengths are the people that we invest in as we carefully identify and select the people that we want to work for us. We hold a high amount of experience at all levels throughout the business with a large number of employees having worked for Lister Wilder or within the industry for many years. We aim to give a complete “peace of mind” service to anyone choosing to buy machinery from us. This includes site visits and appraisals along with on site demonstration, thus ensuring that the correct machine is identified for each individual need. Additionally all of our sales team hold Bagma installation qualifications which ensure that every item is professionally and safely installed with all operators that attend. About Baroness Baroness have been producing grass cutting machinery in Japan for over 50 years and have developed a full range of fine turf and golf course machinery aimed at the maintenance of specific types of terrain, grass types or desired finish. From pedestrian greens mowers to 5 gang fairway mowers the range has been manufactured with three main objectives in mind, low cost of ownership, ease of use and reduced maintenance intervals, thus ensuring that the customer experiences the best value for money solution available. Baroness UK are proud to be suppliers of equipment to a large number of golf courses across the country and together we look forward to showing you the benefits that the brand can bring to your course or pitches. 2 Machinery Specialists listerwilder.co.uk join us The Low Down on Baroness We’re seeing a lot more Baroness machinery out and about now so caught up with Phill Hughes, Sales Director at Lister Wilder, to discuss the growing success of the brand from the UK’s largest supplier. So Phill, how long have Lister Wilder been involved with Baroness? P – We have been dealers now for around five years. The first couple of years were about establishing both the brand and ourselves into the fine turf market. Then over the last two to three years we’ve really seen interest gather pace - Baroness is now one of our leading franchises. What challenges have you come up against so far? P – As with any newcomer to the market, people were understandably cautious about committing to a new brand in the early days - many didn’t want to be the first to try it out. How did you overcome people not wanting to be the first? P – Many saw the benefits that Baroness can offer, especially the low cost of ownership due to reduced maintenance needs. Customers also told us they saw the brand as a welcome new player in the market, that had previously been heavily dominated by the big three they were pleased to see something fresh. 4 Machinery Specialists We also found many of our customers had more confidence to try out a new brand, knowing there was the support and back-up that a large main dealer like ourselves can offer. We now have more than 100 Baroness customers in the South of England, meaning customers can get reassurance from other Course Managers and Head Groundsmen about their experiences. In short, we’ve found the quality of cut, reliable product, and excellent service levels to be the key drivers pushing the brand to where it is today. P – Lister Wilder are a family owned company established in 1947, supplying Groundcare, Agricultural, Arboricultural and Construction machinery, operating from nine depots across the South of England. We employ 180 people, and pride ourselves on our back-up service, currently employing over 60 mechanics with fully equipped service vans and specialist tools. Coupled with that is an investment of approximately £3m in spare parts stocks which ensures we deliver on our commitment “Sales with Service.” The Groundcare & Golf division has been running since 1995 and our strengths lie within the market leading franchises that we hold. These include Kubota, Baroness, Charterhouse, Trimax, Sisis and Timberwolf. From its inception in 1887 and hosting no fewer than 14 Open Championships along the way, Royal St George’s has long been a great institution. It is a surprise then to discover that, behind the scenes, there is right now a bit of a revolution underway. and liked it so much that I got the guys who do the cutting to use it, and we were all impressed,” says Paul. “In terms of eco-friendliness, the cleaner cut produces virtually no tearing of the leaf, so the sward is less prone to disease and the grass is generally healthier and naturally more vigorous.” Assistant Damien Puxted says that he found the LM56 ideal for the course’s small tees. “It is particularly well balanced, which means that over a day of tight turns you are a lot less fatigued,” he says. Both he and colleague Stephen Chidley also like the fact that it is possible to control speed via the dead man’s handle. “Its other big advantage is that the Baroness cylinders stay on-cut,” says Stephen. “Over the course of eight months, we never had to adjust it once.” the grass is generally healthier and naturally more vigorous.” In practical terms, it means a programme of burning management for rough and out-of-play areas. But it also means using ecologically-friendly machinery with a quality of cut that minimises the need for chemicals and fertilisers. And that is one of the reasons why Royal St George’s has now invested via Lister Wilder in three Baroness LM56 hand mowers which (in this case) are being applied specifically to the tees. The LM56s non-contact cylinders also make them more environmentally friendly in terms of reduced fuel consumption and emissions. Course Manager Paul Larsen discovered the capabilities of the Baroness after Lister Wilder left one on trial. “I gave it a try 6 Machinery Specialists Lister Wilder provide full back-up for Specs Baroness helps tee up a revolution The links course, which graces the coastline at Sandwich in Kent, is very much amongst the leaders in ensuring that the eco-system on which its celebrated duneland is based is protected and restored. While minimising pesticides and fungicides, it also means knocking back the invading grass and weed species in the dunes that have, over time, been taking precedence over the traditional fescues. Buy with confidence While the LM56 is widely recognised as the lightest in its class, it nonetheless has a reputation for its solid build. Completely gear-driven, it is easier to maintain and more durable than competitor machines driven by belts or chains. The secret of its cut lies in its nickel-chrome-molybdenum alloy steel cutting cylinders and specially hardened, tipped bedknives. By being the sharpest tool in the box, it provides a complete turf maintenance system in one mower. Paul is also full of praise for the advice he gets from Lister Wilder’s “If anything goes wrong, the back-up service from the company is fantastic.” It is one of a number of partnerships that make life work for Paul who became Course Manager at St George’s in 2012, which he was returning to after a previous spell as an assistant. It is a much loved career that came about almost by accident after initially setting out at a top solicitor’s practice in London but deciding early on that his true love lay with golf as both a player and a manager. Keeping one of the UK’s premier courses in good shape is a big challenge and it was undoubtedly a bold move to pursue a burning policy to protect the dunes within its 400-acres. “What we are doing here is a revolution,” he says. “But it is definitely the right approach because we have to accept that our golf course exists within an eco-system that has to be protected. It is a massive challenge to burn and cut in order to bring the fescues back, but it is working and the difference is very noticeable.” Burning management was used only after extensive research. Its benefits include finer grass swards typical of a links course, plus reduced sward thatch and turf-grass parasites. There is also a saving in man hours because the lance burning system covers a lot of ground very quickly. Cut material is composted and recycled. Importantly, the programme has the enthusiastic support of Natural England and of Graham Earl who is one of its experts on sand dune systems. Get it right and the fescues will once again dominate but with them will flourish rare plants like lizard orchids and broom rapes, and the myriad of birds and insects that love the dunes. The impact of the burning programme is short lived but the benefits are very much long-term. listerwilder.co.uk join us GM281 NEW RELEASE A whole new idea. The new standard rotary mowers. England cricket legend Peter May learned his skills on the playing fields at Charterhouse in the 1940s. More than 70 years earlier, the school had played a formative role in setting the rules of the game we now know as association football. Its sporting pedigree is, therefore, up there with an academic approach that has produced some of Britain’s best known politicians and business brains as well as personalities like David and Jonathan Dimbleby and Boy Scouts founder Robert Baden-Powell. Its outdoor spaces have undoubtedly been as important in the formative years of generations of Old Carthusians as its classrooms. Today, the turf around the extensive 250-acre campus at Godalming in Surrey looks as good as ever thanks to the commitment of Grounds Manager, Lee Marshallsay, and his team. Keeping it all looking good is a challenge in which Lee has enlisted support from Lister Wilder. The dealership’s depot at Ockham, near Guildford has recently supplied two Baroness LM2700 five-unit fairway mowers, a Baroness GM2800 rotary mower for longer grass and a Kubota F3890 outfront mower for rough grass and tight corners. Lee took over at Charterhouse nearly a year ago after coming through the groundsman ranks at Harrow School 10 Machinery Specialists where he progressed from apprentice to Grounds Manager. At Charterhouse, his remit covers sports pitches, gardens, woodlands, a golf course and artificial pitches. While grass is inevitably his biggest challenge, he equally takes pride in woodland management and in the quest to add to its already considerable ecological value. “Like every school site, its very individual,” says Lee. “The challenges change with the time of year and move from repairing football pitches in the autumn and winter to preparing seven cricket squares in the summer. We have a stepped approach and base our aeration and fertiliser programme on the priority of each area.” But it isn’t just about producing the best sports surfaces. “Presentation is very important in a school like this and the grounds have to complement the buildings and vice-versa. “We have a fantastic entrance driveway and from there you can use the stripes in the grass to draw the eye toward the buildings or towards the main cricket square.” And that’s where the Baroness machines come in – but if stripes are important, quality of cut takes precedence. “When I came, we had mowers which we struggled to keep oncut so I set up some demos,” says Lee. “We narrowed it down to two that we liked and, having had Baroness at Harrow, I knew that the quality of the cut would be right and that it would not need constant re-adjustment.” “From my experience, if a Baroness needs parts its not because of a failure but because someone has hit something. I have never had to replace a bottom blade or cylinder but if you do get a problem then it helps that the Baroness UK hq is just down the road at Basingstoke.” The GM2800 may be a rotary but has front and back rollers which mean that it too delivers stripes. It earns its place in the team on the basis of the ground it can cover in a day. “When I came they had never had a rotary mower other than a front deck and they used a single deck on the golf course,” says Lee. “ I felt that with the amount of surrounds we have we needed a decent five-deck rotary. Now, the rough is now done in a day and a bit instead of two days. We looked at one other leading make but there was too much going on when it came to changing heights of cut, whereas on this one it is quite simple.” I have never had to replace a bottom blade or cylinder.” He adds: “The guys all like the fact that the Baroness machines are easy to use and don’t have lots of gizmos and gadgets that you don’t need. What you want is a machine you can just jump on, press a button, and get moving. They are also easier to undertake routine maintenance on.” The Kubota F3890’s key job is to get into tight areas close to trees and fences but it also works well with a Whisper Twister leaf blower fitted, which saves much time on the use of pedestrian blowers. Completing the equipment from Lister Wilder is a Gambetti 600 sprayer which Lee says is easy to use and enables him to run fertiliser programmes without the need for external contractors. listerwilder.co.uk join us Donnington G rove Golf Club invests in Baroness It’s the cylinders that count Baroness is a cut above at Donnington Grove Given that his small team has to achieve the highest standards on not just a championship golf course but a wider 500-acre estate which includes a country hotel and fishing complex set amongst historic woodland, Dave Knight sets great store by choosing the right machinery for the job. And when it comes to the fairways and greens at the Donnington Grove golf course at Newbury in Berkshire, that now means an increasingly important role for Baroness equipment. The club has just taken delivery of an LM2700 fairway mower and an LM315 greens mower, both of which got the nod against tough competition. Head Greenkeeper Dave made his decisions not just as a result of trials involving several manufacturers but from talking to others who have mechanical knowledge of the different options. “I hadn’t come across Baroness previously and I was a bit wary at first,” he says. “But having tried others, I decided it gave a better cut, especially on the fairways. And where our previous machine would go off-cut all the time, the Baroness stayed very much on-cut. I even ran the fairway mower across a fairly rough bit of lawn where we have had problems with moles, and its cut wasn’t affected.” He adds: “It really doesn’t matter what a mower looks like — it’s the cylinder that counts and they have clearly spent a lot of money to get the Baroness cylinders right.” The LM2700 is a mid-weight fairway mower with five units and achieves its quality of cut without the need for multi-layered control functions and systems that are a feature of so many modern mowers. The result is less downtime, easier maintenance and repair and low whole-life service costs. Meanwhile, the LM315 TriPlex greens mower with its 21hp Kubota engine is now recognised as having the world’s finest reel-and-bed knife as well as offering operator comfort and easy controls. The Baroness team is 12 Machinery Specialists Head Greenkeeper Dave Knight. completed by a BR96 greens roller that is powered by a Subaru EX21 engine and has a top speed of 6.8mph. Dave also appreciates the close support he has had not just from Lister Wilder’s Area Sales Manager Stuart Venn-Dunn but from Adam Butler from Baroness UK. Together, they have given him confidence in the aftersales back-up we will now receive. The quality of the Baroness cut will be particularly scrutinised on the USGA greens at Donnington Grove, which was built in the early 1990s to a design by former Welsh Ryder Cup player and legendary golf architect Dave Thomas. The 7,200 yard course in its idyllic setting astride the River Lambourn, sits in the midst of 500-acres of lush countryside. The back nine holes are all overlooked by Donnington Castle, which was the setting for a series of Civil war battles in the 1640s. With its own ornate battlements, pillars and statues, what is now the Donnington Grove hotel was built in 1763 to a Gothic style and has been owned at different times by famous names like Brummell, Gladstone and Fellowes (a cousin of Winston Churchill). The golf course was built in 1992 for a company owned by Japanese Buddhists, and the grounds still include a tranquil temple area and ornate gardens. Now privately owned by Sandtrend Ltd, the course has held two European Pro Tours. The biggest challenge for Dave Knight and his team of eight lies in the sheer scale and variety of their impressive domain. “We call it a grass factory because the fact that we are so close to the river means that it grows very quickly,” he says. “The rough mowers are out five days a week in the summer and we have to top dress the greens fortnightly to maintain the standard.” Specs Baroness LM2700 Ride on fairway mower Engine Kubota V2203-M, water-cooled, 4-cycle diesel with 4 cylinders Cutting Width 277cm Drive 4-wheel drive Cutting units 9-bladed, 66cm x 5 16.3cm dia. or 5 56cm x 16.3cm dia. Golfers who learn how to handle the wind in this lofty spot also have to acclimatise to some humps and bumps down at ground level. Course Manager Neil Bungay. 16 Those characteristic hollows also pose a challenge for the greenkeeping team led by Course Manager Neil Bungay. Most of the fairway mowers they tested in a recent series of demos tended to scalp the surface. But not the Baroness LM2400 – it hugged the contours, and that is one of several reasons why it was the ultimate choice when the time came to invest. The 2.8m width LM2400 benefits from the fine reel and bedknife technology for which Baroness has become known. The machine’s low centre of gravity ensures that the operator feels in complete control. Neil was also attracted by on-board back lapping and by what he had heard from others about reliability. But it was the simplicity that perhaps counted for most. “I was looking for a machine that would be easy to operate and to work on,” he says. “I don’t like the general way things are going with computerised machinery. While I can see the point of features like cruise control, we are not crosscutting here and we simply don’t need it.” He added: “We did the demo on the practice ground where there is quite a big dip. The other mowers we tested dug in but the Baroness followed the contours beautifully. It was the same out on the course where the Baroness hugged the surface while others were very hit and miss. “I have spoken to other greenkeepers in the area who have had Baroness machines for several years and they are very happy with them. They all said they had had no problems - in fact they hadn’t even had them sharpened. They also say that the back-up is superb and that if anything does go wrong Lister Wilder goes out of its way to help them. That gives me peace of mind.” Neil also likes the fact that it is possible to take the hydraulic pressure off each cutting unit individually to make adjustments. As one of the oldest traditional courses in the south west, it wasn’t designed to be managed with machinery and that poses some challenges for the greenkeeping team who have more manual work than most. There is, however, a place for a Kubota F3890 out-front mower which Neil likes because it has good grip and is particularly stable on the banks. Equipped with a Lastec deck to suit the undulations of the course it has a powerful 37.3hp engine and four-wheel drive as standard. I have spoken to other greenkeepers in the area who have had Baroness machines for several years and they are very happy with them.” The West Wilts was originally built in 1891 as a nine-hole course for army officers to a design by the renowned architect of the time, J H Taylor. Small greens and undulating approaches are a feature of what was subsequently extended to 18 holes. Today, the course is owned by its 430 members, but it also enjoys many visitors attracted by the fact that its chalk downland drains so readily, making it playable when others are closed. Trolley bans are unusual. “In terms of power, a lot of machines seem to have Kubota engines and they are very sound,” says Neil. “Everything is very straightforward and easy to operate and the traction is superb compared to our previous machine. It just grips and goes and that is important up here with our undulations.” Alongside the Baroness, it will have a big role to play in maintaining the standards for which this beautiful course has become known. Machinery Specialists Cirencester Golf Club invests in Baroness course and we are very happy with it,” he says. “It is well built and reliable and the blades are especially good. We have our own grinder but they are so good that you can go two or more seasons without needing to grind." “The fact that the new rough mower has rollers to produce summer striping makes a big difference to the appearance of the larger areas of the course. It all then looks more professional.” He adds: “We demoed the new Baroness against rough mowers from all the other leading brands and it was the little things that made the difference. “The size of the deck is very important given our undulations so the fact that it is heavier than others means that it follows the ground contours very well. We also like the fact that you can swivel the rear deck for easy maintenance and cleaning; and the height adjustment is very quick and easy for the operator.” Making the rough look smooth It may not have quite the same golfer appeal as smooth, fast greens but the rough can still look good when its given the Baroness GM2800 treatment – and at Cirencester Golf Club that includes stripes. Members appreciate the fact that Course Manager Richard Louisson and his team of six work hard to give even the places they don’t want to visit some special attention. The valley that sweeps down to the clubhouse from the wooded areas looks especially picturesque when it takes on its summer stripes. legendary Baroness blades which are made using a blend of specially hardened nickel-chrome-molybdenum. He has been particularly impressed by three years’ experience with a Baroness LM2700 cylinder fairway mower and expects the same quality from his newly delivered (rotary) GM2800 for the rough. The capacity to stripe is, however, less important to Richard than the sheer quality of the cut achieved by the “Its early days to fully assess the rough mower but the LM2700 came on the recommendation of another local Machinery Specialists Richard’s association with the course began as a junior member in the late 1980s and continued with a spell of work experience as he pursued his HND in golf course management. We also like the fact that they have a depot close to us in Cirencester.” The arrival of the GM2800 means that the hard working previous rough mower can now focus its attentions on the semi-rough. Working in tandem the pair will, Richard believes, further boost the standing of an impeccably maintained course. Opened in 1910, the course was designed by James Braid who, seven weeks after its launch, won the The fact that the course lies on free-draining limestone is a considerable bonus. “It means we are open right through the year,” says Richard. “We don’t close our greens during frosty weather and I have yet to see any damage from doing so. As one of a golden group of prestigious courses within a mile or so of one another on the Berkshire/Surrey border, Swinley Forest doesn’t take its status as arguably one of the world’s best courses for granted. The trio of LM56s supplied by Lister Wilder therefore had to came through a rigorous selection process. It’s still early days for him to give a full verdict on their performance but Head Greenkeeper John Band, and his team of nine are impressed with what they are seeing to date. John came to the club 27 years ago to do some construction work … but never left as he had originally intended to return to 30 Machinery Specialists a farming life in Herefordshire. The course became not just his career but a family home given that he lives on site. He took on his present role three years ago and has led a programme which includes extensive refurbishment to greens and tees, so adding 400 yards to the course plus a new practice ground and short game area. The greenkeeping team is also intent on dethatching and renewal of heather areas as well as upping the quality of the tees (of which there are at least four per hole). The work on the course is part of a wider period of change for a traditional club that still operates very successfully without the need for a website or advertising. It does, however, now welcome golfing societies Monday to Friday through most of the year. And you can nowadays play there on a green fees basis. The club dates back to 1909 when it was designed by the legendary Harry Colt. It is said to have been his favourite amongst all the celebrated courses for which he was responsible. “They are particularly happy with the fact that the controls allow you to feather the speed. That gives them much closer control on small greens where you are turning constantly.” Golfing Monthly describes the heathland course as a ‘jewel’. It goes on: ‘There are few centurion courses so perfectly designed and in such a wonderful location that little has changed or ever needs to. Swinley Forest is one such shining diamond, and despite recent tweaks you genuinely feel as though you are stepping back in time from the moment you arrive.’ “The other very noticeable point is that they are staying on cut where our old machine needed to be readjusted every time it went out.” John’s overall priority is clear. “Presentation of the course has to be to a very high standard and that’s why I bought these new machines for the tees,” he says. “The previous mowers that we were using simply didn’t give me the quality of cut — we were using greens units on the tees so they had too many blades and didn’t produce the quality of cut.” The tees are small and many have banks alongside them — they weren’t deigned for triples and need to be hand cut. “So far, the Baroness machines are doing a good job. The lads all like using them which is unusual given the fact that there are seven of them all agreeing on one machine – it doesn’t happen very often! He adds: “Baroness is a new name for us but everyone I have spoken to who has used them for a while says they are still going strong and are reliable.” The LM56s are completely geardriven which makes them easier to maintain and more durable than belt or chain-driven mowers. They also have the benefit of cylinder blades made from a unique combination of nickel, chrome and molybdenum and specially hardened tipped bedknives. It means that Baroness cylinders have earned a reputation for keeping their cutting edge for longer than any other mower. The LM56 is also much more than just a mower in that it can be equipped with a bi-directional front grooming reel, de-thatching reel or brush, all of which are gear-driven and interchangeable within five minutes. The result is a complete turf management system in one mower. Presentation of the course has to be to a very high standard and that’s why I bought these new machines for the tees,” Head Greenkeeper, John Band. listerwilder.co.uk join us Reading Blue Coat School invests in Baroness Pitching in at Reading Blue Coat School Kubota and Baroness keep things neat There is a real buzz about Reading Blue Coat School – and it’s evident not just in the healthy pupil numbers nor the new facilities but even in the quality of the grass on its extensive sports pitches. The presentation of the pitches and of the wider grounds is hugely important to an establishment that occupies a glorious Thameside site at Sonning in Berkshire and is widely regarded as one of the UK’s best independent day schools. Grounds Manager Matt Wharton, and his team of four have already made major progress over recent months and are promising that the changes will become even more evident this summer as a new Baroness LM2700 fairway mower settles into its new role cutting the sports fields. The Baroness will be working in tandem with a fleet of Kubota equipment, all of which has been sourced from Lister Wilder’s nearby Reading depot. The machines include a new F3890 out- 32 front mower which is bringing the woodland edge and other rough areas up to a similarly high standard. Meanwhile, a Kubota L4240 tractor does a sterling job over a wide range of projects — from pulling and powering a Verti-Drain to scarifying and hauling a trailer. Its bucket shovel is also an invaluable tool. A Kubota RTV acts as the grounds team’s workhorse, moving men and materials wherever they are needed and with the capability when needed to haul a snow plough. Making the grounds look and function even better is a task that Matt relishes. He took the role at Reading Blue Coat School three and-a-half years ago after building his experience on the grounds of Oxford University and then at Radley College, Abingdon. Reading Blue Coat School enjoys the same sense of tradition as Matt’s former employers with a history stretching back some 370 years. The school moved from the centre of Reading to Machinery Specialists its current site in 1947 and has enjoyed substantial progress over recent years. Its development programme has been built around new state-ofthe art teaching facilities, including a 25-classroom block, a dedicated geology and psychology building, a sixth form centre and design / information technology facilities. The response to all that investment has been an increase in pupil numbers for a school that takes boys from 11 to 18 and has a co-educational sixth form. Matt Wharton is determined that the sporting success of the school will be further boosted by the quality of its 11 hectares of playing surfaces for rugby, football, hockey, cricket tennis and athletics. Drainage issues on a lowlying site close to the Thames make that a significant challenge in some areas. “Budgets are tight and we have a small team,” says Matt. “It makes it particularly important that we have the right tools for the job. I have worked on a golf course and I knew the capabilities of a good fairway mower. As soon as I tried the Baroness I knew it was right - it has reduced the time we need to cut the sports pitches by half, and that frees up the guys for other work.” the fact that the LM2700 easily meets the latest stringent requirements for whole body vibration. The operators all report favourably on the simplicity of operation and on the ease with which the cutting height can be adjusted. He adds: “We were using an old council machine previously and it wasn’t capable of achieving the standards we wanted and coping with the results of our fertiliser programme. It simply couldn’t keep up." The school has taken both the Baroness and the Kubota out-front rough mower on a five-year contract hire basis. “It works brilliantly for us and makes great sense in terms of budgeting,” says Matt. “The quality of cut from the Baroness is massively better and it also rides our undulations brilliantly rather than scalping the grass as the old one did. Even over the winter months it improved the quality of the pitches by 30 or 40%, which is incredible. The health of the plant looks better; we are not tearing and it looks so much more professional.” Dealership support from Lister Wilder has, he says, been “excellent”. “We have had great support from Stuart Venn-Dunn on the sales front and putting together the contract hire deal, and they have a very good service department to back up the equipment.” Of particular significance for the school as a responsible employer is Grounds Manager, Matt Wharton. As soon as I tried the Baroness I knew it was right - it has reduced the time we need to cut the sports pitches by half, and that frees up the guys for other work.” He concludes: “The grounds are already looking a lot better as a result of the new equipment and I think they will look a lot better still, through the summer months.” listerwilder.co.uk join us LM2400 The Lightweight Fairway Mower. Keeping them looking good is not, therefore, something that the school takes for granted – and that includes the 60 acres devoted to sports pitches. Head Groundsman Rob Froud. I got a call from the lads saying ‘this is incredible you have to try it’.” With seven rugby pitches, three cricket squares, athletics facilities and no fewer than 36 tennis courts (ten of them grass), it is not surprising that Bryanston also has a reputation for producing England under-18 rugby players and girls under-14s county hockey champions. It adds up to a lot of grass that needs cutting to a rigorous programme – a task that now relies on Baroness GM2800 and LM2400 mowers from Lister Wilder. The switch to the Japanese brand that is making such a big impact on Britain’s golf course market was one that Head Groundsman Rob Froud had not anticipated. He and his team have had demons with two other manufacturers machines before responding to a recommendation to try a Baroness from Lister Wilder. “I had done my research on the others but didn’t really even know the Baroness name,” says Rob. “I wasn’t here on the day it was demoed but then I got a call from the lads saying ‘this is incredible - you have to try it’. Buried deep in Dorset countryside, Bryanston School has a reputation for innovation and for providing a platform for pupils who go on to make a mark on the world. Designer and Habitat founder Sir Terence Conran went there, as did adventurer and TV presenter Ben Fogle and actress Emilia Fox of Silent Witness. “It was a wet April day and we had just top dressed the rugby fields when I took it out. I cut an outfield and it did the job perfectly, left no mess and recycled the cuttings. I then checked the cut on the mower and that hadn’t changed. The decision (to buy the LM2400) was then an easy one.” He adds: “I like the fact that the cutting cylinders run at high speed so it cuts well without tearing the grass whilst maintaining a quick forward speed. I also like that you can individually switch the cylinders to backlap, which makes maintenance very easy.” Perhaps most significant for Rob was the sheer simplicity of a machine that 36 Machinery Specialists has little to go wrong because, unlike some others, it is not encumbered with a mass of computerised controls. “It has a reliable Kubota engine which our mechanic can look after,” says Rob. The same ease of use flows through to changing the height of cut which, at Bryanston, means switching regularly for different sports. Changing height on the other machines we looked at was a painful process . . . anyone can adjust the Baroness in a couple of minutes.” With the LM2400 lightweight fairway cylinder mower with its 2.8 metre cutting width having proved its capabilities for over a year, it was a natural follow-on to order the powerful and flexible GM2800 semi-rough mower rotary in the summer of 2016. Also cutting at 2.8 metres, the GM2800’s five units quickly cover large areas, with the free movement of the decks meaning that it easily follows contours and avoids scalping. Rob comments: “Changing height on the other machines we looked at was a painful process that would need our mechanic whereas, once you know what you are doing, anyone can adjust the Baroness in a couple of minutes. And when the blades need changing our mechanic can do that in no time.” A working Head Groundsman who likes to be hands-on amongst his small team, Rob has been at Bryanston for 15 years. He started as a trainee and was promoted from deputy to the lead role in 2009 when his predecessor, Ade Cross, sadly died after 21 years in the role. Rob is only the fourth Head Groundsman in some 88 years, which says much about the school’s approach to its staff. The flexibility it offers also means that Rob makes light of long days that may start before 6am and in peak summer months involve middle of the night watering of tennis courts that are in constant use from 10am to 8pm. Achieving high quality surfaces for each sport is his mission and he enjoys good relationships with the individual members of the sports teaching staff who appreciate his efforts. The first team cricket square is now rated as one of the best in Dorset. The school’s summer holidays are the busiest time for the grounds team who have to keep the sports surfaces up to high standards for a succession of courses and set up equipment. Lister Wilder has an increasingly important role to play in supporting Bryanston’s massive grass cutting programme and has recently also supplied two machines from its Kubota range – a F3890 out front mower and a G21 ride-on mower for use by the woods team in looking after banks and verges. While the back nine holes are surrounded by agricultural land, the front nine nestle among some of the most beautiful houses in West Sussex - a tough situation for the greenkeepers, who need to keep this section looking great but can’t start work on it until 7am, leaving them a tiny window before the first tee time, which is often 7.30. The clubs decision to invest in order to improve standards led to both the appointment of Paul and an allocation of funds to buy new machinery. For Paul, the priority major purchase was a new greens mower. Paul takes up the story: “With the need for outstanding performance, ease of maintenance and versatility, for me there was only one greens mower that would be up to the job – the Baroness. I had been through the selection process myself at my previous club, so I knew what I wanted for Ham Manor, but I felt it was important to involve my whole crew in the decision. After a thorough look at the options, everyone agreed that the Baroness was way out in front of the competition.” The versatility of the multi-tasking Baroness really won over all who attended the product demonstration. “The attachments that come with the Baroness really rubber stamped it,” says Paul. “They are different to everything else on the market - top quality and wellmanufactured. We have a set of greens units with rear roll brushes, groomers, dethatching brush and slitter unit. They are all so quick and easy to change and you don’t even need a spanner to change them over. Mission Improvement Paul Brown, recently appointed Course Manager at Ham Manor Golf Club, is a man on a mission. With drive, enthusiasm and a new Baroness LM315 greens mower, he has set about improving standards on the course and fulfilling the potential of the club’s beautiful parkland setting near Angmering in West Sussex. 38 Machinery Specialists Joining the club in Spring 2016, Paul faced some real challenges. The 18-hole course, designed by Harry Colt back in the 1930’s, can be extremely wet with some areas actually lying below sea level, and although this means that the grass grows all year round and stays green even after a month without rain, the greens team has a lot of mowing to do and faces a constant battle with thatch. The club’s aging fleet of machinery was struggling to keep up with the job, failing to provide the quality of cut required, and maintenance bills were going through the roof. “Ease of maintenance was also an over-riding factor. Whereas a few years ago, the club had a mechanic, that is not the case now, and with a team that doesn’t include mechanical expertise, maintenance has to be easy.” Paul and his team are not just impressed with the quality of cut with the Baroness, but with how long that quality continues. The Baroness LM315 works differently to other manufacturers’ mowers in that there is no contact with the cylinder on the bottom blade and it is this contactless system that produces longevity of cutting quality. “In previous clubs where my teams have used grinders on other machines, we found that within a couple of cuts, the cut grass felt ‘squishy’ between your finger and thumb,” says Paul. “With the Baroness, it is crunchy! You can tell it has been clipped and cut properly rather than squashed. With other units, cut quality was already lost on freshly ground units after 18 holes or so. With the Baroness, after cutting the greens several times, it has still got that crispness of feeling in the box.” The speed of cut has made a big difference to the team battling with a short working window on the front nine holes. Being able to achieve a quality cut and complete a number of tasks in a short timeframe has helped minimise disruption for members too. The relationship with Lister Wilder is a new one for Ham Manor, but the commitment and back-up offered by both the dealer and Baroness has impressed Paul. “The Baroness was not the cheapest option we looked at but cost is one of the last things we considered,” says Paul. “There is no point having a cheap mower if it doesn’t give you the quality you need, breaks down all the time, or if you are not going to get the back-up from the supplier or manufacturer. We have 100% confidence in Lister Wilder’s back-up.” Taking pains to involve everyone at the club, including members, in the investment and improvement process from the outset, Paul ran a couple of presentations to set out what he hoped to achieve in the coming months and years. “The amount of interest shown in the new Baroness has been tremendous,” he says. “Members have commented on the noticeable improvement in greens quality already.” “Our Baroness is still new, but we have certainly put it through its paces. We have had it working on greens, tees, collars and aprons and it has done it all in the most outstanding fashion.” listerwilder.co.uk join us LM2700 Unparalleled Mower. The original building on Lewisham Hill was badly bombed in 1944 and after years in temporary accommodation, the school moved to its current site in 1963. Since then the school has grown, with the addition of a number of new buildings and facilities, including most recently The Stewart Building, a substantial new sixth form centre. Colfe’s School now educates 1,100 pupils – boys and girls – aged three to 18, many of whom are from the local communities of Lewisham, Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich. Brian was so impressed with his two Baroness mowers and the service provided by Lister Wilder and Baroness that he has recently replaced them with two new LM2700’s – absolutely sure that they are now, as they were then, the perfect solution for the school. Colfe’s was one of the first schools to purchase Baroness mowers and, from the outset, Brian has been hugely impressed by the responsive service provided by the manufacturer. “When we had our first mowers eight years ago, we had a small issue with one of the components - the sort of teething trouble you can get with brand new equipment. Baroness were brilliant. They came and replaced the item straightaway, free of charge, no questions asked, and couldn’t have been more helpful,” says Brian. “We have also had great service from Lister Wilder, not just with the Baroness machines but all the equipment we have bought from them over the years.” We can do everything from a 2” rugby cut to cricket cut using the same machine and it is so easy to adjust.” Among the school’s impressive facilities are extensive sports grounds – not one but three – totalling well over 100 acres in all. Keeping this sizeable acreage in perfect condition would be difficult enough for Head Groundsman, Brian Atkins and his six-strong team, but add the fact that the three locations are separated by busy roads and the real challenge becomes apparent. Brian found the answer to his problems when he bought the school’s first Baroness LM2700 mowers from Lister Wilder back in 2008, after trialling a shortlist of four options selected at the Institute of Groundsmanship Show in Windsor. “What I was looking for above all else was speed,” explains Brian. “We have to travel between the main school playing fields, the Horn Park sports ground and the Leathersellers’ sports ground, which means we have to drive out onto the A20 and negotiate a very busy roundabout. “The Baroness has the pace to take out on the road without causing too much disruption or putting us at risk and it does the job quickly too without compromising on the quality of the cut.” Brian takes great pride in the standard of presentation his team can achieve with the Baroness mowers. “The great cut and crisp patterns you can create with the Baroness really do leave an impressive finish,” he says. “The guys love using the mowers. I have a job to get them off them sometimes,” he laughs. Brian, a lifelong Tottenham Hotspur fan, came to Colfe’s in 2004, following a 21-year stint as Head Groundsman at the Private Banks sports ground in Catford. These days a heavy administration load means that he rarely gets out mowing himself but time in the office he calls his ‘Spurs Room’ isn’t so bad. His desk is surrounded by photos of players and other Spurs memorabilia. “They really are the best team in the world!” he says. The Baroness LM2700 has a travel speed of 13.7 mph and a mowing speed of 8.7 mph, meaning it can cover the ground quickly and efficiently, reducing operational costs. The Need for Speed Ease of use and maintenance were other important criteria for Brian. “The Baroness mowers are easy to operate, easy to maintain and so versatile,” he says. “We can do everything from a 2” rugby cut to cricket cut using the same machine and it is so easy to adjust. It is all just common sense.” Head Groundsman, Brian Atkins and his new Baroness mowers. Only Baroness has the pace Looking at the modern buildings and state-of-the art sports facilities at Colfe’s School in Greenwich, it is hard to believe that the school has a fascinating history going back over 350 years. 42 Machinery Specialists listerwilder.co.uk join us Weybrook Park Golf Club invests in Baroness “The pressures and challenges of the construction of the new holes means that we need to keep our downtime to a minimum,” says Jamie, who is ex-Bearwood Lakes and also worked in Turkey. “The fact that the Baroness mowers stay on-cut and need minimal maintenance is, therefore, important to us.” He adds: “In the same way, we know that we can rely on the Kubota RTVs because it is a reputable name and the vehicles are hard-wearing. The combination of Lister Wilder as the dealer and Baroness as the manufacturer is one I am very comfortable with because I know I can call Greg Chapman (Lister Wilder) or Adam Butler (Baroness) at any time and get a quick response.” Baroness at Weybrook Park LM315 (x2) Baroness debuts at ambitious Weybrook Park Building a big reputation Ambitions are running high at Weybrook Park Golf Club. From the construction of nine new holes through to investment in a fleet of new Baroness and Kubota machinery from Lister Wilder, there is an atmosphere of confidence about a club that is intent on being the best in North Hampshire. It might be just two miles from the centre of Basingstoke, but Weybrook Park is set in beautiful rolling countryside with long-distance views across downland that includes Watership Down, which was made famous by Richard Adams’ celebrated rabbits. None are in evidence as the new machinery makes its debut on a busy golfing day. loaders is a proud moment and is symptomatic of their mutual drive to take the course to a new level. “We want to be the best course in the area and the machinery is a key element of that,” says Jamie with enthusiasm. Now settling in just a few miles from the Baroness UK headquarters are two LM315 greens mowers, two LM2700 fairway mowers and a GM2800 semi-rough mower. Meanwhile, the day-to-day job of moving men and materials around the course has been entrusted to a pair of Kubota RTV400 utility vehicles. But why Baroness? “We spoke with other local clubs that have gone with Baroness and the feedback we got was all very positive,” says Jamie. “We also talked to reps from other companies and you simply don’t hear bad things about Baroness – it is a company that has introduced its Japanese-manufactured range into a highly competitive market here in the UK and I am very impressed with what they are doing.” For the club’s Course Manager Jamie Sheeran, seeing so much new machinery rolling off the back of two low- The greenkeeping team at Weybrook Park has its work cut out right now as the member-owned club uses its 44 Machinery Specialists “ We want to be the best course in the area and the machinery is a key element of that.” own labour to move on from today’s 18 holes plus three academy holes to open six new USGA-spec holes by September this year.
