High solids epoxy coating for crude oil tanks CASE STUDY Challenge Located in Dickinson, N.D., Steffes Corporation manufactures 400barrel crude oil tanks used for storage at well sites in North Dakota’s Bakken Formation. Until recently, Steffes had been using a single-component airless sprayer to apply the coatings. Each day they would hand mix the coating in 5-gallon pails prior to spraying the tanks. The increased demand for oil in North Dakota has created a need to increase tank production at their facility. Solution The Graco XP70™ Plural-Component Sprayer with an optional XP Pressure Monitor Kit has been profitable with a quick return on investment for Steffes. The system has allowed Steffes to consider faster setting, higher solids coatings supplied by Sherwin-Williams. Results The greatest benefit of the Graco XP70 for Steffes Corporation has been faster production. Before the Graco XP70, Steffes was coating three oil tanks per day; now they can coat up to five, a 40 percent increase in production. The primary reason for faster production is the ability to heat and mix the coating on demand at higher flow rates and not worry about the coating’s pot-life. Because the Graco XP70 is a plural-component sprayer, it is necessary to implement an appropriate quality control method. The XP Pressure Monitor Kit reads the pressures on the A and B components and shuts down the sprayer if off-ratio conditions exist. A simple green, yellow or red light indicates the status of the machine. On two occasions, the kit has prevented The Graco XP70 Plural-Component Sprayer is designed to pump, mix and atomize high-viscosity materials with superior results. down time and costly rework.
