Introduction The 3.5" Aircraft Control Display Unit (CDU) is designed for installation in a helicopter cockpit. The transflective display operates under a wide range of lighting conditions from full dark (NVIS) through bright sunlight. The smart display utilizes an ARM 8 processor with an interface built around four user defined bezel keys and two rotary selector knobs. The user can interface with the CDU through the five pushbuttons and two knobs on front of the bezel, and visually through the NVIS compatible LED backlit Transflective LCD. The aluminum chassis exterior is painted Black and the pushbuttons’ background are painted black with white nomenclature. The LCD utilized in the CDU assembly is a 3.5” diagonal a-Si TFT Transflective LCD with 6-bit per color LVDS, 320 x 240 pixel (QVGA) resolution with an NVIS compatible LED backlight. Also, on the front panel there are pushbutton nomenclature and panel nomenclature which are backlit with NVIS compatible LEDs. The NVIS backlight is mainly utilized in dark ambient conditions. When in high ambient conditions the LCD utilizes its Transflective backlight design which utilizes the high ambient light to further illuminate the display. The pushbuttons and bezel nomenclature in high ambient light will utilize the contrast between the black background and when nomenclature for readability and have no dependency on the backlight at that point.
