Installing the Cable Install the modem in your PC, as described in Chapter 2 of your modem’s user’s guide. Then use the following steps to connect your modem to a cellular telephone with a Cellular Direct Connect cable.
WARNING To ensure compliance with FCC Part 15 Regulations, do not remove or reposition the ferrite choke that is attached to the Cellular Direct Connect Cable.
1. Carefully plug the cellular cable’s 9-pin connector into the modem’s 9-pin rear edge connector. The connector’s slot must face up. 2. Attach the other end of the cellular cable to the cellular telephone.
KeepInTouch Cellular 14.4 kbps PCMCIA Modems — Upgrading Your Modem’s Firmware To use a Cellular Direct Connect Cable, the firmware in your 14.4 kbps modem must be Release 1.76 (or higher) and you must also have firmware that supports your specific model of cellular telephone. Both the basic firmware and the cellular telephone support can be easily upgraded to the versions you need. The information in the help text file “cellv32.txt” will help you determine if you need to perform an upgrade, and if so, will guide you through the upgrade process.

KeepInTouch Cellular 28.8 kbps PCMCIA Modems — Using the )C Command To use a Cellular Direct Connect Cable, you must set up your 28.8 kbps modem to recognize your particular model of cellular telephone by using a )Cn command. The value to enter for n depends on your model of cellular telephone. For more information on using the )Cn command, refer to your modem’s user’s guide or the help text file “cellv34.txt”. To save your changes, use a &Wn command. The &Wn command is described in your modem’s user’s guide and in the help text file “atamper.txt.”
Locating the Help Text Files The “cellv32.txt” (for 14.4 kbps modems), “cellv34.txt” (for 28.8 kbps modems), and other help text files (also called “readme” files) are available through the following sources: • KIT
t Utilities software. This software diskette may have been packaged with your modem.
You may see only the main help text file, “readme.txt,” on the diskette. This is because the other help text files have been compressed in order to save disk space. To learn how to uncompress these files so that you can read them, see the instructions in “readme.txt.” • If your modem was included in a PC purchase, your PC vendor may have loaded the files onto the hard drive for you. The main executable file for the KIT Utilities is “KIT.EXE”. • A Bulletin Board System (BBS). To access the BBS, dial 1-813-532-5254 with your modem. The BBS always contains the most up-to-date versions of the help text files. The help text files are in ASCII format. You can read them by using a text editor or reader or by using the KIT Utilities software (versions 3.0 and higher). Instructions for installing the KIT Utilities are provided in your modem’s user’s guide.
