3COM IP TELEPHONY INTEGRATION WITH LOTUS SAMETIME AND DOMINO APPLICATIONS Enhance collaboration and boost productivity with integrated communications solutions The Sametime client is shown here with telephony integration icons highlighted.
OVERVIEW Organizations gain cost-saving efficiency when they integrate Lotus® Sametime® and Domino® applications with 3Com® IP telephony solutions. With a single mouse click and from within the Sametime application, workers can dial other users, view the availability and phone status of call recipients before placing a call or add individuals to an existing conversation. Lotus Domino integration extends the proven, easy-to-use and easy-to- administer capabilities of 3Com IP telephony solutions.
KEY BENEFITS MAKE CONTACTS WITH CLICK-TO-CALL SPEED Users of the instant messaging and e-mail capabilities of Lotus Sametime and Domino applications already have comprehensive solutions for presence, instant messaging and web conferencing. With IP telephony integration, information in a centralized database supports seamless communications with colleagues and external contacts; calls can be made using a 3Com desk phone by clicking on a contact within the Sametime application.
BENEFIT FROM DIRECTORY INTEGRATION AND SYNCHRONIZATION The centralized structure of a fully integrated solution enables use of a common Domino directory, simplifying administration and ensuring reliable connections based on the most current information—even in the case of
frequently changing contact data. Synchronization between the Domino directory and the IP telephony module also enables distribution of central database changes throughout the organization, eases deployment of communications devices and streamlines maintenance of user information.
SAVE TIME, ENHANCE COLLABORATION Users of instant messaging will be familiar with online, busy and away status indicators. With Lotus Sametime integration, the benefits of this presence information is extended to telephony services, allowing authorized users to quickly assess whether the person they want to contact is available to participate in a phone conversation or engaged in an active call.
UNIFY COMMUNICATIONS IN A SINGLE INBOX With 3Com integration software, Lotus Notes becomes the true unified communications system, supporting voice messaging and fax services, and allowing users to hear, forward and archive their voicemail messages from their computer. Messages are delivered as .wav attachments in e-mails and synchronized—opening and listening to a new voice message in Lotus Notes changes the status of the message from unread to read, and then turns off the phone’s message-waiting indicator. Similarly, fax messages are attached to e-mails and made available as .tif or .pdf files that can be viewed, printed and/or stored.

3Com® VoIP gateways shown from top to bottom: V7111 analog available for FXS and FXO connectivity and the V7122 and V6100 VoIP digital gateways.

OVERVIEW 3Com® VoIP gateways help enterprises transition to IP communications using an economical overlay strategy that aligns financial considerations with performance needs. The gateways lay the foundation for a successful deployment of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-based applications, and enable interoperability between a converged IP network and legacy equipment—including PBXs, the public switched telephone network (PSTN), analog phones and fax machines.
3Com digital gateways provide all necessary functions and protocol support for handling voice calls between traditional circuit-switched phone networks and an IP network. 3Com analog gateways (both FXS and FXO models) let analog phones and other legacy analog devices use 3Com SIP-based IP telephony features.
REDUCE TELEPHONY COSTS As part of a converged network solution, the gateways let organizations reduce PSTN costs by implementing least-cost routing IP telephony features delivered by the VCX IP telephony platform. To minimize long distance calling charges, calls can be routed via the most costeffective gateway. In addition, remote sites can retain PSTN connections for supporting local Direct Inward Dialing (DID or DDI) numbers and for receiving the lowest local call tariffs from their communications service provider.
FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS › Supports consolidation of PSTN connections and optimizes use of toll-bypass
KEY BENEFITS
› Uses SIP signaling for communications with VoIP applications on VCX IP telephony platforms
MAINTAIN UNIVERSAL CONNECTIVITY
› Dynamically supports the latest compression algorithms to optimize bandwidth management
With 3Com VoIP gateways, organizations can retain analog devices for operational or budgetary reasons when they implement IP telephony. During the transition, their employees can continue to use familiar equipment and interfaces, including dialing plans, email systems, fax machines and modems.
IMPLEMENT REMOTE SITE SURVIVABILITY In environments where remote branch sites depend on a single wide-area IP network connection to the VCX® IP telephony solution, a local analog gateway enables incoming and outgoing calls to the PSTN. This capability provides telephony survivability and business continuity for the remote site even if its IP connection has been compromised.
› Implements echo control and a dynamic programmable jitter buffer for high voice quality › Allows analog phones or fax machines to connect to VCX IP telephony platforms (FXS analog gateways) › Allows calls from VCX IP telephony platforms to analog PBXs or PSTN lines (FXO analog gateways) › Scales to handle up to 480 simultaneous voice calls in a single gateway; modular and fixed digital gateway models support from one to 16 T1/E1 lines and are able to use a variety of PRI and CAS protocols › Easily expands traffic capacity via modular digital gateways
