3D Printer Policies and FAQ Policies 1) The 3D printer is available for use by current students, faculty, and staff of the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Medicine. 2) All use of the 3D workstation must be reserved in advance (see FAQ for instructions on reserving the workstation). 3) Only designated staff will have hands-on access to the 3D printer. 4) Staff are acting as facilitators to provide access to the 3D workstation and printer. Staff do not necessarily have the skills to assist you with its operation especially during evening hours. 5) This service is designed for rapid prototyping, not production. No jobs printing large numbers of identical objects will be accepted. 6) All printed objects must be picked up at the AskUs Desk within 30 days of printing. 7) The McGoogan Library cannot guarantee model quality or stability, confidentiality of designs, or specific delivery times. The 3D printer may be used for academic or business-related purposes only. 8) Objects printed on the library’s 3D printer must be done so for lawful purposes. Users must abide by all applicable intellectual property rights and laws including copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code) and patent law (Title 35, U.S. Code), UNMC policies, and library policies. 9) No firearms or other weapons, obscene or inappropriate objects may be created using the 3D printer. 10) McGoogan Library staff reserve the right to decline any print request for any reason. FAQ How do I schedule time for object design and submit my order for printing? • On the Library homepage, click on the 3D workstation schedule link from the 3D Printing @ McGoogan Library LibGuide. • You do not need to schedule the workstation to submit a print job. • You can bring your file to the Library AskUs Desk on a flash drive or you can submit it through the 3D Printing Request Form. • Printing requests will be processed in the order that they are submitted. What equipment and software is in the makerspace? th MakerBot Replicator, 5 Generation 3D Printer MakerBot Digitizer MakerBot MakerWare software for Digitizer MakerBot Desktop software for Replicator MeshLab NetFabb Basic PLA (polylactic acid) plastic filament (various colors) 3D Printer Is there a cost to use the 3D printer? For the 2014-2015 academic year 3D printing is funded by the Library Technology Fund and there will be no charge for the printing of projects as long as supplies last. How does a 3D printer work? The 3D printer renders a physical object from a digital model by the process of fused filament fabrication. Plastic filament is fed through a heated nozzle that the computer moves, building layer upon layer from the base of the item upwards. What are the maximum dimensions in which the 3D printer can print? MakerBot Replicator has a built volume of 9.9 x 7.8 x 5.9 in. How detailed can the 3D printer get? The MakerBot can produce layers down to 100 microns (0.0039 in.). What material is used by the 3D printer to make objects? The MakerBot Replicator uses PLA (polylactic acid) bioplastic, which is suitable for moving parts and functional prototypes. How long does it take to print an item? Build times depend upon several factors: size, intricacy, amount of support material required. Build times can range from 2 hours to 48 hours. 3D Workstation How long does a scan take? An object scan can take up to 12 minutes. Objects with areas of black or dark coloring may not scan properly. Do I have to use the Library’s 3D workstation to design my object to print? No, you can design your object on your own at home, at work or at the library. Only the following file formats, .stl, .obj, .thing, will be accepted for 3D printing. Please avoid using SketchUp as we cannot guarantee that the project will print correctly. What size objects can I scan on the digitizer? Objects up to 8 x 8 in. with a max. weight of 6.6 lbs.
