1. DESCRIPTION
1.1. The EOP0020C01 The EOP0020C01 is an electrical-to-optical and vice versa format converter for video signals with 20 channels configurable as inputs or outputs. It occupies one rack unit (1 RU). This device has been designed as an electrical format video signal port for installation in wall racks that form part of a production platform. Due to this purpose, the unit has a reduced depth, does not use fans, has all of its electrical connectors on the front panel and has all of its optical connectors on the rear board. The EOP0020C01 operates with SDI signals at 270Mbit/s as well as DVB-ASI and HD-SDI signals at 1.5Gbit/s and 3Gbit/s. The 20 channels of the EOP0020C01 are grouped into ten sections of two channels each. Each section contains two BNC connectors for the electrical signals and an SFP cage for installation of an optical SFP module with LC/PC connectors for the optical signals. The SFP modules must be acquired separately and can be transmitters or receivers. Each SFP module consists of two converters of the same type (either electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical) and this determines the direction of the signal flow for each section between the electrical, BNC connectors and the optical connectors. The number of available electrical inputs and outputs on the front of the module depends upon the number of input and output SFP modules that have been installed. Any electrical connectors for a section that does not have an SFP module installed operate by default as output distribution connections for the signals of the section located to their immediate left. The two inputs of Section 1 are configured as inputs if no SFP module is installed in Section 1. The EOP0020C01 permits installation of an optional TLE0001 communications module with an SNMP agent, and this allows control and supervision of each channel of the port. Each section includes three LEDs on the front panel. One LED indicates whether the BNC connectors are operating as inputs or as outputs, the second LED indicates an absence of signal or possible operational errors and the third (composed of two LEDs that light up simultaneously) indicate that the electrical signal present in the BNC connectors of that section is available at the next section's BNC connectors as well. The EOP0020C01 includes two redundant 1+1 power supplies, each with an input of 100-240VAC. The SFP fiber optic receiver modules from Albalá Ingenieros have the part number for ordering MSFPRP01, and the transmitters have the part number MSFPTP01. The optional communications module's part number is TLE0001C01.

3. INSTALLATION
THE EOP0020C01 MODULE CONTAINS ELECTRONIC DEVICES SENSITIVE TO ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE. Always use antistatic bags clearly identified with a high degree of shielding for storage and transportation.
3.1. Initial inspection Verify that package has been properly handled during transport. After opening the package, check that the EOP0020C01 is inside. You must notify your Albalá Ingenieros distributor or dealer of any damage or defects observed.
3.2. Safety instructions
When the module incorporates any optional SFP optic fiber transmitter provided by Albalá Ingenieros, the EOP0020C01 is a CLASS 1 LASER product as per the IEC 60825-1 standard. Please read the safety instructions included in this manual carefully before using this module. • The EOP0020C01 may contain an SFP fiber optic transmitter module with laser diodes. These modules are CLASS 1 LASER products. Due to its features this device is inherently safe. However, exercise CAUTION as there is invisible laser radiation in the module's fiber optic connectors. Avoid exposure to the beam. NEVER lift or remove the cover of the EOP0020C01's optical connectors except to connect a fiber optic connection, and be sure that the power is off when doing so. NEVER leave optical connections that are carrying signals disconnected from the equipment. NEVER examine a fiber optic connector with a microscope without being absolutely certain that no optical signal is present, as this could cause serious damage to the retina. • The EOP0020C01 is a telecommunications infrastructure device and must be installed and operated by technicians with appropriate training.
13
Albalá Ingenieros | Manual EOP0020C01
• This equipment must be connected to a mains outlet with a protective earth connection. Never use extension cords that do not have protective earthing connection. The lack of an effective electrical connection between the ground pin in the mains input connector of the equipment and the protective earth of the electrical power distribution can cause serious harm. • The EOP0020C01 is designed to be operated indoors and should not be used outside. It should also not be used in explosive, corrosive or radioactive environments or in applications that could endanger the lives of people or animals. • The EOP0020C01 does not have any internal parts that are user, maintenance personnel nor technician serviceable. The device's fuses are accessible via the rear and should always be replaced with the same type.
3.3. Environmental considerations This symbol indicates that this equipment must be deposited at a collection point for proper waste treatment once it has reached the end of its useful life.
3.4. Installation of SFP modules The EOP0020C01 features receptacles to install optional SFP modules for signal transmission or reception over optical fiber or other functions. To install or uninstall one of these modules in the equipment, follow the instructions given below. To install, insert the SFP module into the receptacle and slide it carefully until it clicks, indicating that the module has reached its final position. To uninstall, first remove any optical or electrical cables that are connected to the SFP module. Then lift the metal ring located at the opening of the SFP module to disable the module's retention mechanism and release it. Finally, pull module carefully out of its receptacle. There are two classes of SFP modules: transmitters and receivers. Both look identical externally and can only be told apart by the part numbers printed on each module. The transmitter modules sold by Albalá Ingenieros have the part numbers MSFPTP01 or MSF-CWDC0X, whereas the receiver modules have the part number MSFPRP01. Any of the SPF cages can house a transmitter or a receiver module, and the user decides which type will be installed in each cage. It is not necessary to install an SFP module in every cage - the number and type of SFP modules can be adapted to the user's requirements. A more detailed description of this functionality is given in the Operations section of this manual.
14
Albalá Ingenieros | Manual EOP0020C01
Each SFP module provides access to two fiber optic cables, and the signal they transmit or receive corresponds to the electrical signal from the BNC connectors on the front panel. Note that transmitter SFP modules have their odd and even channels reversed with respect to receiver SFP modules. The receivers when viewed from the LC connector side have their odd-numbered channels on the right side, whereas the transmitters have their odd-numbered channels on the left. BNC connectors 1 and 2 always correspond to fiber optic cables 1 and 2 of the first section, BNC 3 and 4 correspond to fiber optic cables 3 and 4 and so on up to BNC 19 and 20. For ease of installation, the SFP modules should be installed in their cages before the port is installed into the mounting frame. The SFP modules are acquired separately and the unit can be supplied with the modules already installed if so indicated when placing the order. The EOP0020C01 can operate with SFP modules from other manufacturers besides Albalá Ingenieros, but in such cases the port must be informed of type of module (transmitter or receiver) using the TLE0001 communications module. The SFP modules installed must always have two channels of the same type (dual transmitters or dual receivers) and should never be transceivers. Furthermore, the modules must be designed for use with pathological SDI signals using formats of up to 3Gbit/s. Modules designed for other signals such as Sonet or 10-Gigabit Ethernet cannot be used. Regardless of the type, if SFP modules from other manufactures are used, the ability to perform diagnostics on the modules is not available.
3.5. Installation of the port in a mounting frame The EOP0020C01 electrical-to-optical port dissipates the heat it generates via convection and conduction. For this reason, a single rack unit space (1 RU) should be left empty both above and below the unit. If the rack or mounting frame where the EOP0020C01 will installed is equipped with forced ventilation then the slots above and below the unit do not have to be left empty. The four mounting screws for the front panel are sufficient for securing it to the mounting frame - no support rails or tray are required. It is important to locate the EOP0020C01 within the frame or rack such that the operators can easily access it for making connections. Positioning the unit too high or too low is not recommended because this makes connecting and monitoring the device difficult. Marking or labeling the card holders is recommended prior to installing the EOP0020C01 in a mounting frame.
3.6. Interconnection The EOP0020C01 port has three types of connections: the power supply, the electrical video connections and the optical video connections. If the communications board is also installed then a LAN, Ethernet connection also exists.
15
Albalá Ingenieros | Manual EOP0020C01
3.6.1. Connecting the power supplies The EOP0020C01 has two independent, redundant power supplies. The unit can operate properly with only one power supply connected. For redundancy, both supplies should be connected to AC power. For optimum redundancy, each supply should be connected to a different power network, a different phase, or at least to supplies with different circuit breakers. The port comes from the factory with two IEC coded power supply cables.
3.6.2. Electrical SDI video connections The connections for electrical format SDI video are located on the front panel and use BNC connectors. The following information provides recommendations when making connections with electrical signals. BNC connectors used on cables must be suitable for the high frequencies of digital video signals: it is strongly recommended to use high quality connectors from well known manufacturers. All coaxial cable used must be Belden 1694A or similar. This type provides the greatest lengths because it is used to calculate the equalizers in the EOP0020C01. Cables carrying signal between the module and the devices should use single piece construction, avoiding spliced sections with double BNC female or barrel connectors. If it is necessary to split the cable into two sections the same type of wire should be used in both sections. The use of analog video coaxial cables RG-59 type or similar is not recommended for digital video except for very short distances.
3.6.3. Optical SDI video connections The SFP fiber optic module must be inserted into its housing as described previously before interconnection. Optical connections are performed in the SFP module, which is equipped with LC/PC connectors. Connectors using single-mode fiber optics are usually blue. Connectors for multimode fiber optics are usually gray. Singlemode fiber must be used in fiber optic cabling. However, for standard definition and short lengths multimode fiber can be employed. Before connecting any fiber optics, the cap that protects the connectors must be removed. Unused fiber optic connectors should always be covered by the protective cap. All fiber optic cables have a minimum curvature radius that must be obeyed (consult the specification of the cabling used) and should be run with enough strain relief to absorb small, unintended pulling or mechanical stress. Fiber optic connections are sensitive to dust and dirt. Any dust or dirt particles trapped
16
Albalá Ingenieros | Manual EOP0020C01
in the optical pathway act as attenuators of unknown value and in the worst case can render the signal unusable. Care must be taken to ensure the cleanliness of and not to dirty the connectors during insertion and removal of the fiber optic cables. When making connections it is important to keep in mind that Outputs 1 and 2 of a transmitter module correspond to Inputs 2 and 1 of a receiver module. The silkscreening on the back of the module indicates the first inputs of the first section as 1R, the first input of the second section as 3R, etc. The first output of the first SFP transmitter module is labeled 1T, the first output of the second module is 3T, etc.

4. OPERATION
This section describes the meaning of the LEDs on the front panel of the EOP0020C01 module as well as the possibility of remote supervision with the optional TLE0001C01 module. It also describes the operation of the port regardless of the configuration of the SFP modules.
4.1. Front panel description The following is partial view of the front panel:
DETAIL OF THE FRONT OF THE ELECTRICAL-OPTICAL PORT Each pair of BNC connectors found in the same box forms a section with an associated SFP module. The significance of the LEDs for each section is describes as follows: INPUT:
Green. This LED lights up when the two BNC connectors of its corresponding section (a pair corresponding to an SFP module) are video signal inputs. When the two BNC connectors are operating as outputs, this LED remains off.
NO SIGNAL:
Red. This LED lights up continuously to indicate an error situation in both channels and blinks if an error is present in only one of the two. If it flashes then pauses, the error is in the first BNC connector's signal. If it flashes twice then pauses then the error is in the second BNC connector's signal. These flashes indicate: a) No video signal is present in one of the channels. b) A video signal is present but the reclocker is incapable of synchronizing to it. c) An error with the laser in the SFP transmitter module.
19
Albalá Ingenieros | Manual EOP0020C01
This information is valid for both signal inputs and outputs except for the case of a laser error, in which case the error indication is only valid for video signal inputs via the BNC. ARROW LEDS:
Green. These two LEDs located above the arrow light up when the signal for the two BNC connectors of their corresponding section is being transferred to the next section. In the case of the figure displayed, there will be a signal transfer from BNC 9 to BNC 11 and from BNC 10 to BNC 12 when the two LEDs above BNC 10 and BNC 11 are lit.
POWER ON:
Green. These LEDs light up when the EOP0020C01 receives voltage from the electrical power network.
4.2. Functional description
4.2.1. Port operation without a communications module The EOP0020C01 electrical-to-optical port provides 20 optical connections and 20 electrical connections. Each optical connection communicates with one of the electrical connections and converts the signal between optical and electrical format as soon as the port receives it. The direction of format conversion is determined by the type of SFP module installed for each section. Since each SFP module is dual, it sets the direction of signal flow for the two BNC connectors of that section. The fiber optic receivers turn the BNC connectors into outputs and the fiber optic transmitters set the BNC connectors as inputs. In this last case the configuration is displayed by lighting the front panel INPUT LED. When the EOP0020C01 is not completely equipped with SFP modules, the electrical part of each section that does not have an SFP module is unused. With aim of adding flexibility to the unit and the making the most of the available resources, the EOP0020C01 can automatically transfer the signal from the BNC connectors of one section to the BNC connectors of the next section if that section does not have an SFP module installed. Specifically, the two BNC connectors of a section that does not have an SFP module receive signals from the two BNC connectors located immediately to the left (when viewing the unit from the front). Installation of an SFP module for Channels 1 and 2 is always recommended because these connectors can never receive a signal transferred from other BNC connectors. Transfer of signal is indicated by lighting up two green LEDs inside an arrow on the front panel. This transfer mechanism is automatic and allows distribution of certain video signals. If Channels 1 and 2 do not have an SFP module, their BNC connectors become inputs that can transfer signal to BNC 3 and 4 (in the case that no SFP module is installed for the section of BNC 3 and 4).

EXAMPLE CONFIGURATION WITHOUT A COMMUNICATIONS MODULE
4.2.2. Port operation with a communications module When the electrical-to-optical port has an optional TLE0001C01 communications board installed then remote control and supervision become possible. Remote control allows signal transfer between the pairs of BNC connectors for each section. By default and without a communications module the EOP0020C01 only transfers signal from one section to the next when the last section has no SFP module. With the communications board, each section can be configured to transfer signal whether or not an SFP module is installed in that section. Another functionality that is only possible via remote control is selection of the type of SFP module installed when modules from manufacturers other than Albalá Ingenieros are used. Remote supervision provides individual access to the parameters of each signal in each channel. These parameters are: - Indication of the presence and type of SFP module. - Indication of the presence of signal for each channel. - Indication that the reclocker has synchronized to the video signal for each channel. - Indication of an error in the laser of the SFP optical transmitter modules. - Indication of the optical power level received at each optical input. - Indication of the internal temperature of each SFP module. - The serial number of each SFP module. The control software architecture for the EOP0020C01 is similar to that used in the Albalá Ingenieros TL3000 family of modular products. Remote control and supervision of the electrical-to-optical port is possible using the software, available from www.albalaing.es and the TLE0001C01 control board. Each of the sections of the
21
Albalá Ingenieros | Manual EOP0020C01
EOP0020C01 are displayed as if they were a module within a UR3000 mounting frame. The module in Slot 1 corresponds to Section 1, which is the section located at the far left. Remote control and supervision of these parameters can also be performed using an SNMP manager owing to the agent incorporated into the TLE0001C01 communications board. On the rear board of the device along with the Ethernet port are two associated LEDs. The green one, (100M), lights up when the LAN operates at 100Mbit/s and the yellow one, (LINK), lights up when there is genuine communication with the hub.
4.2.3. Details of the EOP0020C01 registers The EOP0020C01 module provides control and status registers that can be read and written by means of specific commands described in the communication control module user manuals. The parameter information grouped in the CONTROL or RAM sections is stored in volatile memory. Any modifications to the parameters will be lost when the module power supply is disconnected unless the "EEPROM Save" button within the software has been pressed. The STATUS section parameters are read-only and cannot be modified. The parameters that can be controlled and supervised remotely for each version of the firmware are listed below:
