Quick Start Guide 802.11a CardBus Card Getting Help The Skyline 802.11a CardBus Card is a high performance wireless network adapter that allows a PC equipped with a CardBus slot to join an 802.11a wireless network. In addition to complying with the IEEE 802.11a standard for wireless networking devices, the Skyline 802.11a CardBus Card also supports 2XTM mode, which provides data rates of up to 108 Mbps. This Quick Start covers the basic steps necessary to get you started. It is important that you read the complete User Guide included on the CD-ROM in your Skyline package for further configuration and operation information. This user guide contains important instructions for configuring and operating your Skyline CardBus Card. It can be viewed using Acrobat Reader version 4.0. Skyline 802.11a CardBus Card Installation After you have installed the software and inserted the Skyline 802.11a CardBus Card, configure the card’s networking parameters to establish communication with your wireless network. Windows Installation If you have one or more 802.11a Access Points, configure the Skyline 802.11a CardBus Card to operate in Infrastructure mode. If your network consists of only 802.11a client adapters, configure the CardBus Card to operate in Ad Hoc mode. IMPORTANT! Insert the Skyline CD-ROM before inserting the CardBus Card. Do not insert the card before the Skyline installation software instructs you to. 1. Insert the Skyline CD-ROM into the computer’s CD drive. The installation program will launch automatically. (If it does not, run setup.exe from the CD.) About the Skyline Utility Double-click the Status Monitor icon in the Windows System Tray to launch the Skyline Utility. 2. Click Next to continue. 3. Select a folder for the Skyline Utility files and click Next to continue. 4. Enter a name for the utility’s Program Manager group and click Next. W I N D O W S 5. Click Next to install the utility. 6. Click Finish to view additional information about the utility. 7. Click Finish to continue. 8. When prompted, insert the card into the computer’s CardBus slot. 9. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. ➤ Windows XP users: When prompted, select Install the software automatically (Recommended) and click Next. ➤ Windows XP/2000 users: Click Yes or Continue Anyway when prompted that the driver is not Microsoft-certified. Station Configuration Allows you to configure the 802.11a operating parameters, including Network Mode (Ad Hoc or Infrastructure), SSID and 2XTM mode. ➤ If prompted to identify the location of the file Netpr11a.cat or Prox11a.sys, direct the installation wizard to search the Skyline Installation CD. ➤ If prompted for a Windows installation disk, insert the disk used to install Windows originally or locate the CAB files on your computer. 10. Restart the computer if prompted. Otherwise, click Close when prompted that the card has been successfully configured. The Skyline Utility’s Status Monitor icon will appear in the Windows System Tray: The Skyline Utility includes several diagnostic and configuration tools: Association Information Displays information about the card's connection to the 802.11a network, including the Association State and signal strength. Security Allows you to configure the card’s Security settings, including WEP. Network Traffic Statistics Displays information about the number of packets sent and received by the card. 802.11a Networks Tests the link between the card and detected networks. Also allows you to change the card’s configuration with the click of a button, allowing it to join another network. About Displays version information. The card is now ready for use. Use the Skyline Utility to configure the card and determine if it is communicating with other 802.11a devices. IMPORTANT!
