Instruction Sheet 408-4293 Fiber Optic Sapphire Scribe Tool 504064-1 27 Jul 07 Rev A 2. Gently draw the beveled edge of the sapphire blade across the fiber as shown in Figure 2. 3. After lightly scoring the fiber, pull the fiber straight away from the connector to finish the scribe process. The fiber should shear cleanly at the scribe point. INTRODUCTION Figure 2 This instruction sheet covers the use of Fiber Optic Sapphire Scribe Tool 504064–1. The tool is used to remove fiber from the connector end face before polishing. Read these instructions thoroughly before using the tool. Reasons for reissue of this instruction sheet are provided in Section 4, REVISION SUMMARY. 2. DESCRIPTION 4. INSPECTION It is recommended that the tool be inspected immediately upon arrival at your facility. AMP also recommends inspection at regularly scheduled intervals, to ensure that it has not been damaged during handling and use. The scribe tool has a cutting tool design. The body is metal, the cap is plastic, and the cutting tip is sapphire. Visually inspect the tool, especially the tip. The tip should be clean, dry, and free from cracks, nicks, or any deformities. If the tip is damaged, it should be replaced or discarded. The tip cannot be repaired. 3. SCRIBING PROCEDURE 5. TOOL REPLACEMENT Before scribing the fiber, make sure the epoxy in the connector has been properly cured. Order replacement tools through your representative, or call 1–800–526–5142, or send a facsimile of your purchase order to 717–986–7605, or write to: DANGER ALWAYS wear safety glasses when working with optical fibers. BE VERY CAREFUL to dispose of fiber ends properly. The fibers create slivers that easily puncture the skin and cause irritation. 1. Place the sapphire cutting tip on the fiber just above the epoxy as shown in Figure 2. CAUTION 6. REVISION SUMMARY DO NOT allow the sapphire cutting tip to touch the epoxy.
