And of course, you want it to look great. But first, learn about head gear. A motorcycle helmet is not a novelty. It’s a serious piece of safety gear and should be carefully selected. What you learn can help you decide which style is really the best for your type of riding. 1 THERMOPLASTIC 2 Polycarbonate 3 FIBERGLASS 4 CARBON FIBER T A single-layer, injection-molded material offering a good balance between strength and weight. Requires a larger inner impact liner, which increases shell size and weight. P A thermoplastic polymer, often injection molded or thermoformed, highly durable with high-impact resistance. F Multiple layers of fiber cloth combined with layers of resin. The strength of the fiberglass weave allows for a smaller inner liner, which is why fiberglass shells are typically lighter and more compact than thermoplastic shells. Ideal for long or hot rides. C Very similar to fiberglass; the difference is that the cloth is made from extremely tough, carbonized Kevlar material. The inherent strength of Kevlar allows for less material resulting in a lighter and more comfortable shell. Retention System Should be snug, yet comfortable. Always fasten while riding. HELMET FITMENT make sure your helmet measures up Proper fit is vital to the performance and effectiveness of any helmet. Remember: all helmets fit differently, so always try on a helmet before you purchase it. Ask your local dealer to help you choose the helmet that’s right for you. FIND THE PROPER FIT STEP 1 FASTEN UP As you put the helmet on, there should be some resistance. Next, fasten the chin strap comfortably snug. The cheek pads should touch your cheeks (but not so that it’s uncomfortable). It’s a bad fit if: You can easily slide a finger between your chin and the strap. There’s space between your brow-line and the inner lining. You’re able to roll the helmet forward and off your head. In any of these cases, try a smaller helmet. STEP 2 Get moving Move the helmet from side-to-side and front-to-back. You should feel your skin and scalp move as the helmet moves. You want to feel a slight, even pressure all over your head. Keep in mind that a helmet loosens up a bit as the comfort liner compresses with use, so you want it to fit as tightly as you can comfortably wear it. STEP 3 15-minute test Before you buy anything, wear the helmet for at least 15 minutes. Do you feel any uncomfortable pressure points? It might not seem so bad in store, but during a long ride, you’ll really feel it. If you experience any discomfort, try a helmet in a larger size or another style. If you wear eyeglasses or sunglasses when you ride, make sure you’re wearing them during the 15-minute test. They should fit inside your helmet without irritating your ears or the bridge of your nose. STEP 4 Clear vision You’ve found a helmet that fits properly. Now check your range of vision to the left, right, and up and down. Absolutely no part of the helmet should obstruct your field of vision. If it does, try another helmet. CARE REPLACE YOUR HELMET EVERY 3-5 YEARS Depending on use, you should replace your helmet every 3 to 5 years according to helmet safety schemes. Keep in mind that glues, resins and other materials break down over time, while hair oils, sweat, cosmetics and the sun’s UV rays add to the helmet’s deterioration. Remember, a helmet is designed for only ONE impact. If a helmet is dropped or suffers any impact, it should be replaced immediately. Any impact may fracture the outer shell or compress the impact-absorbing liner. MAXIMIZE THE LIFE OF YOUR HELMET NEVER • Expose a helmet to chemicals or excessive heat, as this may degrade the protective properties, even if damage is not visible. • Hang a helmet on a motorcycle’s mirror, turn signal or sissy bar, which may damage the impact absorbing liner. • Use solvents or chemicals to clean any part of the helmet or shield, as they can destroy protective coatings and compromise the structural integrity of the helmet. • Use a dry cloth to clean debris from a face shield as you might scratch the shield. ALWAYS • Before riding, be sure chin straps are tightened properly and not frayed. • Check that visor screws and the face shield are firmly secure. • Use mild soap and water to wash the outer shell. • Clean the shield with warm water and a wet, soft, lint-free cloth immediately after dirt accumulates. • Hand wash the internal liners with mild soap and allow to air dry. • Use compressed air to clear helmet air vents and channels.
