[email protected]) Department of Anthropology, College of Arts and Sciences Florida State University
Project Description: The Department of Anthropology requests funding to create high-quality and relevant archaeology labs (used by both undergraduate and graduate students) and graduate student computer workroom for effective instruction in Anthropology courses. Florida State University recently reinstated the Anthropology BA/BS (2013) and MA/MS (2015) degrees. Anthropology, a STEM subject as defined by the National Science Foundation, requires a thorough and detailed understanding of computers and related technologies. Upon graduation, undergraduate majors are presumed to have a basic understanding, and graduate students a thorough understanding of and fluency in the use of microscopy, digital imaging, mapping, artifact analysis, and computer data manipulation. To successfully compete in the job market, students must receive handson experience with the new tools employed in the process of collecting, interpreting, and presenting anthropological data. Integration of this equipment into numerous existing courses will provide this opportunity. Anthropology has had no new instructional technology purchases since before the degree programs were suspended in 2009. In order for our programs, and students matriculating from them, to be successful, we need to update the technology used in instruction in our undergraduate and graduate courses. We are requesting 6 computer workstations and software packages for the Anthropology Department’s Archaeology labs and graduate student computer workroom, 3 printers for these same locations, a flatbed document/photo/slide scanner, as well as a polarizing microscope with digital camera and flat screen monitor. The few (n=3) computers that are currently housed in
1
these locations have been cobbled together from hand-me-downs when the staff replaced their computers, making them in excess of five years old, and are in dire need of upgrading to handle the most current software packages. Impact of this Project on Instruction: Equipment listed in this proposal will be used to varying extents in most upper-division and graduate-level anthropology courses for graded assignments and in field and lab archaeology courses for data acquisition and manipulation. Approximately 450-500 undergraduate and graduate students/year would benefit from the proposed acquisitions. The equipment will be used as a technology package -- moving from the direct acquisition of data through analysis and finally to data summaries in print and electronic format. Undergraduate courses (annual enrollment – smaller classes capped due to space constraints) with substantive use of the lab facility and equipment include: Introduction to Archaeology and lab (200; fulfills a “Liberal Studies for the 21st Century” requirement); Introduction to Physical Anthropology and lab (100; fulfills a “Liberal Studies for the 21st Century requirement”); Fundamentals of Archaeology (75), Human Osteology (25), Paleonutrition (12), and the summer Archaeology Field School with lab component (2025). Students taking Directed Independent Studies, working on UROP projects, and completing Honors Theses also use these facilities (numbers vary per year). All graduate level courses (20), Masters Comprehensive Exams, and Masters Theses (variable per year) in our newly reinstated MA/MS program will make full use of the technology proposed for purchase. We anticipate our enrollment growing as we add new faculty and new courses, thus increasing the impact of the proposed technology purchase to an increased number of students. Project Plan: - December 2015 – Submit Student Technology Fee Grant Proposal - February/March 2016 – Funds awarded - March/April 2016 – Purchase equipment - April/May 2016 – Once received, the equipment will be installed in the appropriate lab spaces – with help from the College of Arts and Sciences IT staff, and configured according to our needs. The computers and peripherals will then be available for student use. The microscope set-up will require students be trained on it first, which will be completed by the Anthropology faculty. The summer Archaeological Field School and Lab will be the first course to use the new instructional technologies. Relationship of this Project to Other University Activities: Two of the courses that will benefit from this instructional technology are Intro to Archaeology/Lab and Intro to Physical Anthropology/Lab. Both can be taken to fulfill a Natural Sciences requirement in the Liberal Studies for the 21st Century curriculum. The technology in this proposal will allow students to make observations and analyze
2
quantitative data. Students in other upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses will benefit greatly from modern technology as they collect primary data for analysis and interpretation. Cost of Ongoing Support: Ongoing support costs are normal operational expenses such as toner and paper for the printers. These costs will be absorbed by the department. Project Team: Anthropology Department Faculty: Tanya Peres, Geoffrey Thomas, Kay Ueda Anthropology Department Staff (involved in purchasing equipment): Trish Barineau and Malinda Carlisle College of Arts and Sciences Systems Administrator: Kurt Rockenstein Budget and Budget Justification: The project budget is attached. Supporting documents, when available, in regards to cost estimates are also attached. Computer workstations are requested for the three archaeology labs (n=4 computers) and graduate student computer workroom (n=3 computers). The flatbed document/film/slide scanner will be used in the graduate student computer workroom to assist with digitizing field documents (i.e., maps, photographs) and documents held in the Anthropology Archaeology Collections (i.e., slides, photos, maps) used in student class projects or theses. The printers will be located in two of the archaeology labs (1 each) and one in the graduate student computer workroom. We propose purchasing a polarizing microscope, digital camera for the microscope, and large screen monitor for laboratory instructions of microplant and petrography analysis in the archaeology lab. An image under the microscope can be shared with a larger group of students through a digital camera mounted on the microscope and a large screen monitor connected to the computer workstation requested in this proposal. The Leica DM750 P is the ideal polarizing microscope for teaching material and earth science in college and university courses for example on crystallography and petrography. Student-friendly features such as EZStore™ with integrated handle and cord wrap provide easy carrying and easy lifting. A storage compartment for compensators and objective centering tools allow students to conveniently store tools, which reduces loss and replacement costs. The EZLite™ LED Illumination, one of the teacher-friendly features, provides cool white light with a life-time of over 20 years average use. The Leica EC3 digital color camera with 3.1 Megapixel, high-resolution imaging capability is ideal for basic college and university teaching. Progressive scan, realtime imaging up to 15 frames per second allows easy focus, zoom, and specimen setup. Automatic controls help set parameters for exposure time, gamma, saturation, and shading. Annotations such as text and scale bars can be added to create presentations or lab reports. The EC3 allows easy connection to all microscopes with c-mount port and all computers with USB2 port.

As good as or better than a Thunderbolt Display in my honest opinion. And I am

an Apple guy. By Kal G. on February 20, 2015 Verified Purchase
I did lots of research on monitors. I was looking to get the biggest bang for my buck. I just renovated a spare room and turned it into my office. This monitor is used with a 13" MacBook Pro. I was originally looking at the thunderbolt display. Its great and all because it charges my laptop and has a webcam, mic and speakers. But for the cost ( $999 at Apple) it was not worth spending the money. I bought this for under $500 and picked up an apple charger for around 500. The laptop comes with a webcam and a mic so I did not need a second. Once I found the HP Envy 32" I was more than happy with the reviews, and it is 32" compared to a 27". I bought this for under $500 and do not regret a second of it! (The beatsaudio speakers are great too!) As a cautious buyer of technology, I read through the reviews and found some negatives. I expected this. Below is a review from my experience. I do not have any cons as of yet. I was originally concerned about receiving the monitor with dead pixels. When I received it two days later (thanks to Prime) I found no such issue.

The matte screen finish is easier on the eyes compared to the glass/gloss screens.
still love it! speakers arent very loud and the remote control needs to be pointed at the screen at just the right angle but i still love it!
Charging devices from the USB ports in the back. They are both USB 2.0 and they charge my iPhone 5 rather quickly.

Others complained about the text being a bit fuzzy. I see no difference between this monitor and my Thunderbolt display at work. and it is 32" compared to a 27".
Love this monitor!

I also read that some people did not receive the stand or wall plate. I received both of these.

Gorgeous 1440P Display, Paired with SemiLow Quality (BeatsAudio) Speakers... Almost Perfect By David Martinez on November 12, 2014
placed where mounting bracket covers... Wonderful monitor, but sound input placed near where mounting bracket covers it up. So, can't use the two speakers on the sides. This is a good sized monitor and nice clarity. Read more Published 21 days ago by OLOPC

I was in the market for a longterm monitor upgrade, coming from an aging 1050P monitor (1680x1050). Given the prices and quality of 4K monitors (almost all 4K monitors are TN based panels the ones that aren't will cost you an arm and a leg), the amount of GPU power needed to drive a 4K monitor for games, and the aging status of 1080P as a resolution, I set my course to find the perfect 1440P monitor (in terms of price and quality). My price range for a 1440P monitor was around $300$360 and most 1440P monitors come in at 27"28"; that is what I was planning on but then I stumbled upon this monitor. A 32" 1440P monitor, produced by HP in collaboration with Beats Electronics at $500. I figured, a little over what I had in mind, but then again, it was proportionately better than a $300, 27" plain old monitor so I took the dive.

Panel Review: [Update]: After a comment from another Amazonian and looking at the manual included in the support CD myself, this panel is without a doubt a AMVA+ (advance multidomain vertical alignment) panel. WVA+ is just used to describe the monitor as having wide viewing angels, though it can include other types of panels. I'm not sure why HP is being so secretive as to the panel type used in this monitor. Despite being a WVA+ (wide viewing angle) panel, there is some color (contrast) shifting when viewing from different angles other than headon; apparently it's common with AMVA+ panels. It's something to take into consideration if you plan to purchase this monitor as a multipurpose TV/computer monitor (specifically for people that plan to use this monitor for photoediting). Also, I'll add that the panel does lack some uniformity, most noticeable when the screen is fully black. Read more ›

This uses a AMVA+ display! By Mitchell on November 17, 2014 Okay, there is not a whole lot of information about this monitor at the moment, so I thought I would convey a few important notes about this monitor. This is in no way a full review, but it does address some of the things I have been reading about this monitor that I disagree with. Firstly, this monitor does not use a WVA or WVA+ display, in fact, I am fairly sure that there is no such thing. The only place someone could come to this conclusion is because on the box it says "32 inch WVA backlit monitor". Most people automatically assume that this means to describe the type of monitor it is. As others have said there is very little information when you Google the term WVA. Most techies however will tell you that this is simply an acronym for "Wide View/ing angle" So many reviews from different sites are classifying this monitor wrong. The only thing they have in common is that this is indeed a VA monitor. Even one of the reviewers on here called up, and the people at HP(who don't specialize in every single product obviously) told him that it was a WVA monitor.... In the product manual that comes with the monitor (which no one seems to read) it clearly states that this uses a AMVA+ display! If you want, you can go ahead and call it a WVA AMVA+ monitor, but the actually technology at play is the newer AMVA+. There honestly isn’t much information on this either, as it came out within the last couple years. However, if anyone is curious and isn’t familiar, here is a good website that explains about the older AMVA(not AMVA+ which is newer, and much improved).
