475 DSLR SHOT PROJECT © Sam Sanchez DSLR SHOT PROJECT You will shoot and edit the following cinematic shots using a DSLR. Setup the DSLR following the DSLR SETUP CHEAT SHEET before each shooting session. Disable the IMAGE STABILIZER on the LENS for all TRIPOD SHOTS. Works in groups of two but no more than three. Frame and focus each shot. Rehearse all shots before recording. For efficiency, shoot to one SD card and slate each clip with the face of the filmmaker. Distribute the clips when you return to the lab. 1. Close-up, Medium, & Wide (non-human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 03 • Start with the closeup, then medium (50% of the zoom range), then wide • Focus close-up shot first. All shots in zoom range will be in focus. • Each clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 2. Long-Medium-Closeup (human) (tripod) • Number 0f clips: 03 • Make three (3) shots of one person in one location • Long - frame the person from the top of the head to bottom of the feet • Medium - frame the person from the waist to the top of the head • Closeup: frame the person from the shoulders to the top of the head • Focus close-up shot first. All shots in zoom range will be in focus. • Each clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 3. Low Camera Angle (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • Camera is lower than the subject • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 4. High Camera Angle (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • Camera is higher than the subject • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll

Set the lens to wide angle (zoom out) • Tripod is optional but the frame must be stable • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 6. Panning (human or non-human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • Pan approximately 180 degrees • Clip should be duration of panning movement including 3 seconds of pre-roll and 3 seconds of post roll • 7. Search Up (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • Start at the feet and end on the face • Pause on the feet for 3 seconds, search up, then pause on the face for 3 seconds • Clip should be duration of shot movement including 3 seconds pause at the beginning and end of the shot 8. Tilt Up (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • A tilt (about 30 degrees) bottom to top while the camera is recording • Stay on the beginning and end of the shot for 3 seconds (see Search Up) • Clip should be duration of shot movement including 3 seconds pause at the beginning and end of the shot 9. Tilt Down (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • A tilt (about 30 degrees) top to bottom while the camera is recording • Stay on the beginning and end of the shot for 3 seconds (see Search Up) • Clip should be duration of shot movement including 3 seconds pause at the beginning and end of the shot 10. Two Shot (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • Two people in the frame • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 12. Over The Shoulder (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • Frame the shot to see the face of the subject while looking over the shoulder of another person. This is a standard conversation shot. • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 13. Reflector (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • Make one continuous shot while using the reflector on and off the subject. Switch every 5 seconds. Reflector must not be in the shot. • Shot can be indoors or outdoors • You can use white or silver indoors • Use white only outdoors • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 14. Focus In (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • Zoom in (telephoto). Frame the shot. Start with the image out of focus and slowly bring it into focus. • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 15. Focus Out (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • Zoom in (telephoto). Frame the shot. Start with the image in focus and slowly go out of focus. • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll

Optical Distortion (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 02 • Have your model face the camera directly and hold still • Frame the face from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin for each clip • Shoot a close-up of a face with the lens set at the widest angle (zoom out) • Shoot a close-up of the same face with the lens set at telephoto (zoom in) • Each clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 17. Tracking: Side (human) (tripod and tripod dolly) • Number of clips: 01 • Using the tripod dolly, follow an actor walking in a straight line from the side. • Make sure you capture the face • Zoom out (wide angle) to minimize shake and maintain focus. • Shoot indoors on a smooth floor • You may share this clip with your group members • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 18. Tracking: Back (human) (tripod and tripod dolly) • Number of clips: 01 • Using the tripod dolly, follow an actor walking in a straight line from behind. • Make sure you capture the head • Zoom out (wide angle) to minimize shake and maintain focus. • Shoot indoors on a smooth floor • You may share this clip with your group members • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 19. Tracking: Front (human) (tripod and tripod dolly) • Number of clips: 01 • Using the tripod dolly, follow an actor walking in a straight line toward the camera. • Make sure you capture the face • Zoom out (wide angle) to minimize shake and maintain focus. • Shoot indoors on a smooth floor • You may share this clip with your group members • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll

Rack Focus (human) (tripod) • Number of clips: 01 • Place your model about 15’ away from the camera • Zoom in and frame a closeup of a face (from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin). Place face in half of the frame. • Find something (e.g. sign, object, another face, etc.) in the distant background to take up the other half of the frame. This should be about 15’ away from your model. • Use manual focus to change focus between the two every 5 seconds. Do this several times during one continuous shot. • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 21. POV: Point of View (human) (DSLR rig) • Number of clips: 01 • Handheld walking shot. • Enable IMAGE STABILIZER on the LENS • Remember to DISABLE IMAGE STABILIZER for all TRIPOD SHOTS • Use the DSLR rig for this shot • Clip should be 15 seconds in duration excluding pre-roll and post roll 5 of 6 475 DSLR SHOT PROJECT © Sam Sanchez SHOT PROJECT PRODUCTION SPECIFICATIONS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Your projects must look similar to the shots demonstrated in class You cannot be in any of your clips All projects must be shot using Skyline DSLRs or equivalent Unless noted, each shot must be created using a tripod Unless noted, all subjects must be human Only one camera angle or camera movement per shot Shoot (3) seconds of pre-roll and (3) seconds of post-roll Each shot must be recorded at FHD 1920x1080 30FPS or the highest recording quality the DSLR is capable of Each shot must be Rated G Each shot must be made using manual exposure (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) and manual focus Each shot must be in focus Each shot must be properly exposed Each shot must have proper white balance Each shot must be stable (except POV) Ask for a spot-check if make sure your shots are acceptable No shots are to be made in the lab (because it’s boring and you need to shoot in the wild) You may work together but unless noted, you cannot share clips Each student must make their own shots and submit their own project SHOT PROJECT POST-PRODUCTION SPECIFICATIONS Follow the Adobe Premiere Pro CC Cheat Sheet The project must start and end in 5 seconds of black video A 5 second title with your name must follow the opening black video A 5 second title with the project name (DSLR Shot Project) must follow your name A 5 second title must precede each clip describing the shot type. Unless noted, each final clip must be 15 to 20 seconds in length Transitions are mandatory between each clip All projects must have music beginning to end Music must fade in at the beginning and fade out at the end Clips must be edited in numerical order as per the shot list Use the following naming convention for your file: name shot project.mp4 • for example: Sam Sanchez DSLR Shot Project.mp4 • Each student must submit their own project • • • • • • • • • • • 6 of 6
