Remote Monitoring and Control 2013:
4G LTE Implications for Remote Networking
Bill Conley – M2M Business Development Manager g at B&B Electronics Over 25 years of experience in the wireless field as an embedded design engineer, specializing in the digital, microcontroller, and microprocessor arenas. Winner of "Most Innovative Product" for one of the first wireless mobile MDTs (Land Mobile EXPO) Winner of "Best of Wireless Telemetry" (2002 Sensors Expo). Holder of several patents in the industrial wireless field field. TIA delegate to oneM2M standards body focused on global functionality of M2M M2M.
The Challenge A well monitoring system out in the Sonora desert
A long way from anywhere… anywhere
The Challenge – Part 2 Local buildings and well are widely separated
Well Site Cellular Modem
Multiple Pieces of Connected Equipment Pressure Holding Sensor (1000 Gal Pressure Tank)
Pressure Pump Current Sensor
Holding Tank Level Sensor (10,000 Gal Holding Tank)
Well depth 660 feet
Water Level
Differential Pressure Sensor and Ground Pump Current Sensor
Concern About Expensive Equipment Failures
Neglecting or overlooking maintenance issues in remote locations can be very expensive.
Lifting the pump out of the ground would cost $10 K.
Multiple Data Feeds Must be Reported in Real Time
Information Feeds IP security camera Pressure tank water pressure Groundwater pump differential pressure Pressure pump current Groundwater p pump p current Holding tank water level
Long Distance Data Transmission Remote sensor data and securityy camera video Must be available anywhere in the world
The Initial (non-Cellular) Solution Wireless I/O, radio modem, and wireless sensors.
Current Solution: 3G Cellular p provides the M2M connections
Emerging Solution: 4G LTE
• 4G LTE’s LTE’ high hi h data d t rates t and d low l latency l t will ill presentt th the first true wireless alternative to cable. • Verizon expects to upgrade its entire network to 4G LTE by the end of 2013, and is already achieving peak download rates of 49.3 Mbps. • AT&T's AT&T s 4G LTE network is expanding at a slower rate rate, but its peak download speeds can reach an amazing 57.7 Mbps.
4G LTE is Important for Industrial Apps
• Leverages L existing i ti network t k iinfrastructure f t t – LTE network accelerating due to consumer applications
• Protocols – Some industrial protocols require fast response times – Some examples: Rockwell EtherNet I/P, Modbus, etc.
• Video – Video does not work well using 2G, is ok with 3G, but works very well with LTE
However, 4G LTE Chip Costs are High
M2M Module Costs in Early 2013 Technology GSM/GPRS UMTS/HSPA CDMA2000 1X CDMA2000 1xEV-DO LTE (with 3G fallback)
Approximate Cost $10-12 $35-$50 $22-$30 $35-$50 $80-$120

“Future Proof” Your Network with 4G LTE
• Install 4G LTE now and absorb the extra HW costs at around $60 per site. • You’re not saving money iff you have to come back and upgrade HW at multiple remote sites later. • Throttle speeds back to 2G if no 4G network available
Key Enabler: Low-Power Design
• Every technology is making strides in reducing power, with remarkable gains in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. • When coupled with sensible system design, several technologies have reached viable micro-power states. • “Lifetime” batteries, power harnessing techniques = key enablers to rapid p g growth in wireless applications. pp
Future Solution: 4G LTE Backhaul with Low-Power Low Power Sensors
Security for Wireless Devices • Security is critical for wireless devices. • Standards play a large part in maintaining and developing security methods. • Security S it is i iimplemented l t d iin allll off th these wireless i l technologies: – – – –
Wi-Fi Cellular Proprietary RF 802 15 4 802.15.4
• Proprietary security methods over wireless should be avoided – Hard to prove – Not interoperable
Standards Based Wireless Security
Wireless Security has come a long way from licensed data telemetry: FSK and AFSK modems. • • • •
AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) 128/256 ISA100 WEP, WPA, WPA2 VPN Tunnels are not a type of security but help secure a network: OpenVPN and IPSec
