To reduce this trajectory, the crotch straps have to be routed backwards and to be worn extremely tight. Some drivers complain of reduced blood flow in their legs. In addition, this configuration is not as effective in rear impacts at keeping the buckle and the lap belt in the correct position. In particular in typical open-wheel race car seating positions the driver is not kept firmly in his seat but is likely to move up exceeding the roll over protection bar. The so called T-bar 6-point belt design provides a better restraining function since the anti-sub straps can be routed downward and slightly rearward from the chest/crotch tangential. This keeps the buckle in place and provides direct load transfer from the shoulder straps into the anti-sub straps. During a rear impact the anti-sub straps keep the buckle and lap belt in place and restrain the driver much better in the seat. 10 The disadvantage of a T-Bar style restraint is that some people complain that the anti-sub strap bracket rubs on the inside of their upper thigh. To increase comfort, the buckle is often not worn as low as it should be for best lap belt positioning. The design of the T-Bar also precludes the addition of a 7th point sub-strap. The solution: the revolutionary SCHROTH Hybrid™ Restraint. The crotch straps are not routed through D-rings or attached to a T-Bar but are held directly by the specially developed lap belt latches.Thanks to the patented SCHROTH RFR™ rotary buckle the load tranfer from the shoulder belts through the buckle into the anti-sub straps and vice versa in case of a rear impact is achieved. This direct load transfer is important for optimal restraining performance. The defining characteristic of a Profi Harness is the anti-sub strap mounting method. The anti-sub straps mount to a latch that fits into the bottom of the Cam lock. In 6 point variants this latch is what is known as the “T-bar” as it resembles an upside-down “T”. In 5 point variants there is a single latch. Profi harnesses are available with either Pull Up or Pull Down adjusters on the lap belts. Most 2” Lap versions feature Flexi-Belt technology allowing the end user to change adjusting directions. 2” versions are available with sewn-in Bolt-in end fittings for installation in tight spaces. 3” lap versions have sewn-in end fittings. Profi Harnesses are our first recommendation for production based race cars and anything with an upright seating position. 12 These harnesses carry FIA homologations. SFI 16.1 homologation available on some belts by special request. Pioneered in Formula 1, these shoulder belts offer the highest level of safety available. Features a 3” belt over the body, and a 2” belt over the HANS® device - effectively sandwiching the device between the two belts. Testing has shown that by mounting the Body Belt at a downward angle of 20º-30º and the upper 2” HANS® belt at a downward angle of 10º improves the performance of the HANS® by 50% over a standard installation. In addition, loads in rear end impacts and rollovers are reduced as the body is more effectively secured. Installation is more complicated with the Double Belt so be sure to consult SCHROTH or your dealer before purchasing. We offer a weld-on bracket to aid in the installation. The design of the new “ZIP Adjusters” allows for exceptional ease of adjustment (tightening) and release for faster and smoother driver changes. There are extra large, easy to see Yellow “hand loops” on the lap belts to make adjusting faster and easier. The loops on the shoulder belts aren’t yellow, but they are there and easy to use. Drivers are often sitting on the floor of the vehicle, and attachment points for the harnesses are sometimes the same for lap belt and anti-sub strap. Couple this with an extremely laid back driving position and your best bet is a Formula style restraint. Formula style restraints are characterized by the D-rings sewn on the lap belts through which the anti-sub straps are routed. They are then looped around the shoulder belt latches. Formula belts do not come with inline lap adjusters. Lap belt length is adjusted at the boltin point. For speciality Formula car applications we have one design with a limited pull-up adjuster on each side. These are the most popular choice for Formula 1, IRL, Formula Atlantic, Formula Nippon and many vintage racers. What is different with our SFI 16.5 Latch Link Harness compared to our SFI 16.1 Harness? First, the SFI 16.5 standard allows for 2” lap belts where SFI 16.1 only allows 3” lap belts. Most sanctioning bodies that recognize SFI 16.5, now also allow 2” lap belts. Read up on the advantages of 2” lap belts on page 42. We have the complete line of SFI 16.5 configurations in both 2” laps and 3” laps. The testing requirements for SFI 16.5 belts are much more involved than for SFI 16.1. First, the webbing test load is increased by 1,500 pounds over SFI 16.1 requirement. Regardless of whether the webbing is 2” or 3” the strength and elongation rates must meet the same test. SFI 16.5 also includes an additional test for abrasion of the webbing not included in the 16.1 test. The 30 body block load is also increased. A 2” Lap belt shown on a replica of a human pelvis A 3” Lap belt shown on the same pelvis To explain why 2” webbing is more effective than 3” webbing, one needs to look at the shape of the human body. The Iliac Crest is the part of the pelvic bone that sticks out above the hips. 2” webbing fits entirely within that crest (see the red belt in the image above), where 3” webbing (blue belt in the image above) rides over the tips of the crest. The 3” webbing has less surface area by percentage than the 2” webbing which will cause more bruising on impact as “hot-spots” of force develop where the belt is making contact with the pelvic bone. Since the 2” webbing rides inside the crest it can be worn as much as 1” to 2” tighter and at the same time is more comfortable. by using a different weave and/or thickness on 2” webbing compared to 3” webbing. Since the 2” webbing fits well within the Iliac Crest of the pelvis, it is less likely to slide up above the crest and cause submarining – a condition where the body slides down below the lap belt possibly causing internal organ damage. Research shows that the faster the pelvis is captured, the lower the resultant loads on the chest, head, and neck. There is no difference in the strength or elongation of the 2” webbing. All webbing (2” or 3”) must meet the same load tests and elongation standards. This is accomplished 42 2” lap belts have an additional advantage in that the adjusters are much easier to use, while being lighter and less obtrusive. There is much less likelihood of cording the webbing or getting the adjuster caught in the seat openings. The patented SCHROTH RFR™ rotary (cam lock) buckle operates with a carbon fiber reinforced gear system. Since it operates grease free it is insensitive to dust and other environmental influences. RFR™ the abbreviation for Regressive Force Release, means the release force is reduced during release operation rather than increasing as seen with all other rotary buckle products. Therefore the RFR™ buckle meets the stringent FIA required release forces without the need of an extended lever. The patented actuator with the recessed lever helps to avoid the risk of accidental release. Severe injuries or death are possible using 4-point harnesses without the SCHROTH asm® safety system or an anti-sub strap. Each lot manufactured must pass our stringent quality control procedures. SCHROTH only uses Polyester material. Polyester has advantages over Polyamide (NYLON®) webbing. Advantages, such as lesser degradation under light (see figure 1) and a resistance against acids like battery acid. In addition Polyester does not absorb moisture so the performance of SCHROTH harnesses do not change whatever the climate may be. Unique to SCHROTH is the “memory effect” we have designed into our webbing. Special mono filaments laterally woven in, perform like small leaf springs and keep the webbing flat. This results in better load spreading over the full width of the SCHROTH webbing. An additional advantage of the SCHROTH webbing: The special weaving technology forms round edges for additional comfort (see figure 2). All SFI 16.5 homologated restraints feature this new webbing, as well as any belt with “Zip” adjusters. 43 TECHNOLOGY Hybrid™ Restraints Engineering in Action! Typical Formula (D-Ring) restraints display high upper torso trajectory during a crash. To reduce this trajectory, the crotch straps have to be routed backwards and to be worn extremely tight. Some drivers complain of reduced blood flow in their legs. In addition, this configuration is not as effective in rear impacts at keeping the buckle and the lap belt in the correct position. In particular in typical open-wheel race car seating positions the driver is not kept firmly in his seat but is likely to move up exceeding the roll over protection bar. The so called T-bar 6-point belt design provides a better restraining function since the anti-sub straps can be routed downward and slightly rearward from the chest/crotch tangential. This keeps the buckle in place and provides direct load transfer from the shoulder straps into the anti-sub straps. During a rear impact the anti-sub straps keep the buckle and lap belt in place and restrain the driver much better in the seat. The disadvantage of a T-Bar style restraint is that some people complain that the anti-sub strap bracket rubs on the inside of their upper thigh. To increase comfort, the buckle is often not worn as 44 Flexi Belt™ low as it should be for best lap belt positioning. The design of the T-Bar also precludes the addition of a 7th point sub-strap. Flexi-Belt™ - one harness, many variations! The solution: the revolutionary SCHROTH Hybrid™ Restraint. Length adjusters in lap belts come as “pull-ups“ or “pull-downs“. In addition they often have to be positioned differently to achieve optimal operation. SCHROTH has developed the solution which covers your different needs with just one lap belt model: the “Flexi-Belt™”. The crotch straps are not routed through D-rings or attached to a T-Bar but are held directly by the specially developed lap belt latches.Thanks to the patented SCHROTH RFR™ rotary buckle the load tranfer from the shoulder belts through the buckle into the anti-sub straps and vice versa in case of a rear impact is achieved. This direct load transfer is important for optimal restraining performance. The lap belt latches and brackets supplied with the harness can be assembled to the lap belt with a two-bar sliding bracket allowing you to change the configuration. With this you decide on pull-up or pull-down versions and if applicable, different for the left and right lap belt portion. You may also vary the lengths to optimize the adjuster position depending on your car, your seat and seating position. Even exchanging mounting hardware is possible (e.g. a bolt-in bracket for a snap-on bracket). “Flexi-Belt™“ is only available with 50 mm (2”) lap belts, SCHROTH “-II” models. TECHNOLOGY HANS Specific Shoulderbelts “Zip” Adjusters SCHROTH designed and developed the 2”/3” HANS® Specific shoulder belt configuration in 2002 when the HANS® was becoming the dominate head and neck restraint (“HNR”) in motorsports. It solved racers concerns about webbing hanging off the yolk of the HANS® and/ or getting caught up in the seat openings. The concept of the 2”/3” HANS® specific restraint is quite simple; SCHROTH designed a belt which fits cleanly and completely onto the surface of the HANS® without any extra webbing to hang off the side or running up the collar. The fitment of the 2” webbing on the HANS® allows for secure and optimal routing of the restraint. In the last few years new SFI 38.1 HNRs such as the Defender and Safety Solutions Hybrid and R3 devices have been released. These devices work similar to the HANS®, in that the shoulder belts of the restraint passes over the top of the device as the device sits on the shoulder. They also all share about a 2” width at this point. The HANS® Specific shoulderbelt design fits perfectly on the HANS® device. Gone are the days of fighting to get the harness tight enough, or struggling to release yourself in the heat of competition. Our new 2” ZIP adjusters are the easiest and smoothest adjusters available anywhere. These adjusters are used exclusively in conjunction with SCHROTH’s 8,000lb webbing. The design virtually eliminates any “microslip” through the adjuster in an impact. ZIP adjusters are used on our Profi Enduro belts and all of our SFI 16.5 Cam Lock and Latch Link belts with 2” lap belts. The integrated “Zip” Adjusters give the industry’s easiest adjustment and release. Perfect for endurance racing. Our 2”/3” design with the 2” webbing passing over the top of the HNR device is available on ALL of our 5-point and 6-point models, Profi, Hybrid, and Formula restraints. The 2”/3” HANS® Specific restraints are used in Formula 1, NASCAR, Porsche Cup Cars, WRC, IRL, WTCC, and virtually all other racing series. If you use, or are planning on using a HANS® or one of the other compatible HNRs, we recommend you select shoulder belts of this type. Look for the symbol throughout the catalog to pinpoint this shoulder belt option.
