NBN Co Battery Backup Service Informed Consent Form Customers are now responsible for deciding whether to use NBN Co’s Battery Backup Service. Retail Service Providers are required to provide customers with the following information so that they are able to make informed decisions. SkyMesh generally recommends that customers take advantage of NBN Co’s Battery Backup Service because it can help to prolong the operation of your UNI ports during a mains power disruption. The Battery Backup Service does not supply backup power to any device other than the Network Termination Device (NTD). During a mains power disruption, you will not be able to use your broadband and voice services unless each of the following requirements is met: • • • Each of your UNI ports on the NTD have NBN Co’s Battery Backup Service enabled; and Your networking equipment has its own battery backup; and Your telephone equipment has its own battery backup if necessary. Your inability to use broadband and voice services means that, for example, you will not be able to browse the Internet, check your email, receive calls, make emergency calls or make any other type of call. In order to use your UNI-V voice service during a blackout, for example, your UNI-V port needs to be powered by NBN Co’s Battery Backup Service. Your telephone also needs to be able to draw power from the UNI-V port or have its own battery backup. If your telephone requires continuous mains power to work, you will not be able to use your voice service during a blackout, even if the UNI-V port is running on backup power supplied by NBN Co’s Battery Backup Service. If you use a medical or security alarm service, you should discuss your needs and solutions with your alarm provider. The Battery Backup Service is highly recommended but you need to ensure that all power backup requirements are satisfied so your alarm service can continue to operate during a mains power disruption. To supply the Battery Backup Service, NBN Co needs to install a Power Supply with Battery Backup next to the NBN Connection Box (see Figure 1 below). The Battery Backup Service will not be supplied until after the Power Supply with Battery Backup has been installed by NBN Co. years. NBN Co provides a list of suppliers that have identified themselves as offering replacement batteries. http://www.skymesh.net.au/batteries If you have a Power Supply with Battery Backup installed and the Battery Backup Service is being supplied, the Network Termination Device inside the NBN Connection Box will be powered for a total of approximately five hours during a mains power disruption. After about three hours, the power supply will automatically turn off to preserve the remaining charge for emergency use. If you need to use the remaining charge, you can press the emergency reserve button. The power supply will not last as long if the battery has aged or is extremely cold. If the NBN Connection Box hasn’t already been installed, you can opt-out of getting the Power Supply with Battery Backup installed when you order your service. Once the Power Supply with Battery Backup is installed though, it will not be relocated or removed by NBN Co. Please note that if you change your mind on or shortly before the installation date, the installation will not be completed and a second installation appointment will need to be arranged. We strongly recommended that you ensure you can always make emergency telephone calls, including during mains power disruptions. If you decide not to have the Power Supply with Battery Backup installed, or if you have it installed but request that the Battery Backup Service be turned off, keeping a charged mobile close by may be one way of maintaining the ability to make emergency calls. Before you make a decision, please ensure you also consider and understand the needs of anyone else that might rely on the service.
