When it flashes amber, the tape heads are already dirty. Tape Media Caution 1 2 1 2 Detail A Figure 1 5142-xSE Media Caution LED Warning!!! The tape heads must be cleaned regularly. Different tape cartridges (60m, 90m, 120 and 125m) required different cleaning intervals. Use the recommended cleaning schedule as specified per cartridge type. See the Tables 1 and 2. Recommended Cleaning Schedule for 60m, 90m and 120m Tape Cartridges (DDS-1 and DDS-2) DDS cartridges used ≤1 2–3 each day Recommended Cleaning weekly twice a week Frequency Table 1 daily 5142-xSE's cleaning schedule when using DDS-1 and DDS-2 tape cartridges Number of DDS cartridges used each day Recommended Cleaning Frequency Table 2 4≥ Recommended Cleaning Schedules for 125m Tape Cartridge (DDS-3) 1 2 3 8 weeks 4 weeks 4 or more 3 weeks weekly 5142-xSE's cleaning schedules when using DDS-3 tape cartridges If you regularly use DDS-1 and DDS-2 tape cartridges along with DDS-3 tape cartridges, more frequent cleaning is required. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide ix Using the Cleaning Cartridge Note: To prevent contamination of the subsystem and damage to the heads (1) do not use the cleaning cartridge for more than the manufacturer's specified number of cleaning cycles; and (2) do not attempt to rewind the material in the cleaning cartridge and reuse it. Insert the cleaning cartridge into the drive. The drive automatically takes the cartridge, loads it and cleans the heads. After about 30 seconds, the drive ejects the cartridge. Note: If the cartridge ejects after only about 15 seconds, this means the cartridge has reached the end of its useful life, and no cleaning has occurred. The Cleaning Needed LED may still be illuminated. If this happens, discard the cartridge and with a new cleaning cartridge repeat the cleaning operation. Take the cartridge out of the drive. Write the date on the label of the cleaning cartridge so that there is a record of how many times it has been used. Do not use the cleaning cartridge more times than specified by the manufacturer. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide x Chapter One – Introduction 1.1 Product Description The 5142-xSE was designed and built specifically for Tandem Computers by TapeLabs for use in a telco central office environment. It's applications include file backup, archiving and software loading. The 5142-1SE contains one DAT drive. The 5142-2SE contains two independent DAT drives. The models are identified as: Tandem Model Number 5142-1SE 5142-2SE Table 3 Note: Tandem Part Number 139086 130985 Number of DAT drives One Two Tandem model and part number While it is housed in the same enclosure as the 5142-2SE, the 5142-1SE contains only one DAT drive, one TapeLabs' intelligent LCD, one set of Infourmm SCSI bridge electronics and one set of rear connectors. The vacant bay in the enclosure is concealed with a bezelmatching filler panel in the front and sheet metal in the back. In the interest of brevity and to avoid redundancy, this manual uses the term 5142-xSE when discussing content that is common to both the 5142-1SE and 5142-2SE. Additionally, the illustrations contained within this manual focus on the 5142-2SE; however, when the need arises, the 5142-1SE is handled on an individual basis. The 5142-xSE unit mounts in a 19-inch opening. It consists of a 4mm DAT drive, a printed circuit board (The printed circuit board acts as a fast SCSI bridge between the host and tape drive. It is used for collecting data and displaying transaction information on the subsystem's LCD), a AC/DC converter, and a cooling fan. It has built-in Power On Self Test (POST) diagnostics. The 5142-xSE is DDS-3, using the 125 meter DDS-3 tape cartridge. The drive is also backward compatible with the DDS-2 and DDS-1 tape formats. The unit is considered a Field Replaceable Unit (FRU), and can be installed or replaced by a Tandem customer service representative. Each DAT drive module has a front panel LCD that shows performance and statistical information to the user. Additionally, the LCD panel, allows some configuration and diagnostic utilities to be run to verify correct drive set-up and functionality. Internal drive and PWA firmware can be upgraded without the necessity of opening the drive case via a code-load tape. The DAT drive can store 12GB of data per DDS-3 cartridge, and up to 24GB of data in compressed mode (assuming a 2:1 compression factor). The drive has both read and write heads and can perform read-after-write (RAW) data checking on the fly. This standard defines the specifications for the Small Computer System Interface (SCSI). As defined by the ANSI, SCSI is essentially an input/output bus for interconnecting computers and peripherals. 1.5 DDS-3 Format and Compatibility The 5142-xSE's DDS-3 format is an extension of the DDS-1, DDS-DC and DDS-2 formats. DDS formats have been developed to provide data storage for computers by using and extending DAT technology. DDS-3 allows 12GB of uncompressed data to be stored on a DDS-3 (125m) tape cartridge. Data compression increases this storage capacity. A compression ratio of 2:1 raises the capacity to 24GB. • The DDS-3 format allows compressed data to be stored in a way that maintains the full functionality of the DDS-1, DDS-DC and DDS-2 formats, and ensures backward compatibility in reading and writing with existing DDS drives. • The drive automatically decompresses DCLZ data, even if data compression is inactive. • DDS-2 tapes written on a DDS-3 tape drive are readable by a DDS-2 tape drive; however, a DDS-3 (125m) is NOT readable on a DDS-2 drive. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 3 Chapter One – Introduction • The DDS-3 format uses the same error correction techniques as the DDS-1 format. These incorporate the error correction techniques used in DAT drives with additional techniques specifically designed to provide the integrity of data necessary for computer use. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 4 Chapter One – Introduction 1.6 SCSI Cabling Limitations Maximum total allowable cable length for a differential SCSI interface is 82 feet (25 meters). This distance must be measured from the controller to the last device on the bus. Remember to add 12 inches for the internal cable of each subsystem. Cables provided are 110 ohm twisted pair. If you are using a cable of unknown composition, we suggest you replace it with the one provided by Tandem Computers. When ordering, please reference one of the following part numbers: 517-010W* 517-025W* 517-050W* 517-075W* *010, 025, 050 and 075 refer to cable length in feet Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 5 Chapter Two – Installation 2.1 Unpacking the Subsystem Carefully unpack and inspect the subsystem. Inspect the parts for possible damage. If damage is observed, immediately notify the carrier and your vendor. There are independent DC power ports for each drive. 2.2.6 Your hardware is now installed. Refer to your backup software's documentation for instructions on performing a tape backup. Note: Make sure that you have terminated the subsystem and have set the subsystem's SCSI ID. (See Sections 2.3 and 2.5 respectively) Terminating the Subsystem The SCSI bus requires termination to be installed at both ends of the bus. Termination power must be supplied by at least one device on the bus. Your tape drive subsystem terminates externally using standard Centronics 50-pin connectors. The two rear panel connectors of drives A or B are interchangeable. Please be certain to use the correct terminator, a differential, for your host computer environment. The SCSI terminators are available from Tandem Computers, TapeLabs and other suppliers of quality components. Your tape drive subsystem has two SCSI connectors to allow the daisychaining of SCSI peripherals. Terminate the last peripheral device on the SCSI bus. Only the last physical SCSI device on the bus may be terminated. When you have external units attached to the bus, none of the devices on the SCSI bus can be internally terminated. The following table summarizes the SCSI termination requirement. If the tape subsystem is… Then… the last of multiple devices on the SCSI bus or the only device on the bus – install the differential or single-ended terminator plug to the unused rear panel SCSI connector. in a daisy-chained configuration with other SCSI devices and is not the last device on the bus – install the terminator on the last device on the bus. Table 6 Note: 2.4 SCSI termination requirements For proper operation of external termination, the host must provide the termination power. If you experience termination problems, please check your tape controller's termination power fuse. Powering the Drive On and Off Input power for the 5142-xSE tape drive subsystem is controlled by the K-series computer. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 7 Chapter Two – Installation 2.5 Setting the Subsystem SCSI ID: The 5142-xSE is a SCSI device. Each device connects to your system through the SCSI bus and MUST have a unique SCSI ID in order for your computer to recognize it. There are not any requirements about the order or position of the SCSI IDs; the only requirement is that no duplicate IDs exist. Devices on the SCSI bus malfunction if two or more devices have identical SCSI IDs. The subsystem SCSI ID must be 5 for connection to the Multifunction Controller (MFC). For 3214 tape controller connection, valid IDs are 4 and 5. 2.5.1 Hold in the mode switch while powering on the computer. On the second line of the display, a highlight indicates what digit is alterable. To increment the digit, push the mode switch. The subsystem SCSI ID must be 5 for connection to the MFC. For 3214 tape controller connection, valid IDs are 4 and 5. If there is no mode switch activity for four seconds the display shows PRESS if Done, allowing you to confirm the setting. The displays returns you to the Setup 1 configuration menu. Push the mode switch to exit the setup menus. SCSI ID: [00] PRESS to Alter Figure 5 2.6 SCSI ID: [01] PRESS to Incremnt SCSI ID: [01] PRESS if Done Setting the SCSI ID Upgrading the Firmware by Tape The drive allows you to upgrade its firmware by inserting a firmware upgrade cartridge. The process takes at least three minutes to complete. Caution: Do not disconnect power at any time during the upgrade process, particularly when the front panel lights are flashing, or it may result in the drive having corrupt firmware or no firmware at all. The drive will then have to be returned to the factory. Make sure that the drive is not engaged in any SCSI activity. Insert the firmware upgrade tape into the drive. The upgrade process automatically takes place. During the actual erasure and reprogramming of the firmware, it is critical that you do not power down the drive. The front panel LEDs flash rapidly during this critical time. After about three minutes, when the upgrade is complete, the cartridge ejects. Remove it, and put it in its box. Note: If the firmware upgrade is incompatible with your hardware, no upgrade will take place. The tape will be ejected after about one minute instead of the usual three minutes. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 9 Chapter Three - Controls and Indicators 3.1 Controls and Indicators This chapter discusses the 5142-xSE tape subsystem controls and indicators by function, location and type. The Media Caution LED (number 2 in Figure 8) uses amber to show the following conditions: • Slow flashing amber indicates that the tape drive heads need to be cleaned, or the tape cartridge is wearing out. • Steady amber indicates a hard fault. The subsystem should be replaced. Call Tandem Nonstop Support Center. The cartridge protects the tape or ribbon and makes handling easier. There are two type of cartridges: (1) cleaning cartridges and (2) cartridge tapes. 1. Cleaning tapes are used to clean the tape drive recording heads with a cleaning ribbon. 2. Cartridge tapes hold magnetic storage media for the tape subsystem. A cartridge tape is a selfcontained plastic shell containing a spool of magnetic tape. These cartridges are used to record and read back system data. 4.1.2 Humidity To avoid condensation problems, allow a tape to stabilize at least two hours after it has been moved from one temperature and humidity to another before you use it. 4.1.3 Life Expectancy of Tapes All DDS-certified media is electronically checked to withstand at least 2000 passes. Under optimum environmental conditions (50% relative humidity, 22ºC), this is equivalent to about 200-300 backup operations. This takes into account that an area of tape may have several passes during a backup. Sustained use at the low end of the humidity specification will reduce the tape life. 4.1.4 Using Labels Cartridge and magazine labels must be firmly stuck to the recessed label area and nowhere else. To avoid a mechanism jam, observe the following: • Labels must be firmly stuck and not peeling off or curling at the corners. • Labels must only be stuck within the label area. • A label must not be stuck on top of another label. • Only use the labels that are supplied with the cartridges or magazine. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 13 Chapter Four - Tape Cartridges 4.2 Selecting a Tape Cartridge The 5142-xSE uses data-quality removable, rewriteable 4mm DAT cartridges. To protect the cartridge, slide the switch all the way to the left (the hole will be visible). Data can then be read from the tape but not written to it. Slide the switch to the right (covering the hole) to write-enable the cartridge. Data can then be written to and read from the tape. It follows that the tape log becomes inaccurate if a cartridge is used when write-protected. Labeled and Unlabeled Tapes The 5142-xSE can use both labeled and unlabeled cartridge tapes. A tape label is a record at the beginning of a tape that identifies the tape volume and the files it contains. An expiration date protects labeled-tape information from being accidentally overwritten. A scratch tape is a labeled tape with an expiration data that has passed. If a tape has no standard label, it is considered unlabeled. Tandem systems support two standard tape-label formats: (1) ANSI and (2) IBM-MVS. Note: Because they can be cataloged and offer security features for protecting data, labeled tapes should be used with the 5142-1SE and 5142-2SE tape subsystems. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 14 Chapter Four - Tape Cartridges 4.5 Loading a Tape Cartridge Warning!!! 4.5.1 Ensure the subsystem's power is on and the tape drive is ready before loading a cartridge. Be careful not to insert a cartridge backwards or upside down. Power on the subsystem. Input power for the 5142-xSE is controlled by the S-series computer. Note: 4.5.2 Use only cartridges labeled DDS. Never use DAT cartridges because the mechanism of the cartridge is not certified. Make sure that only one label is stuck to the label area of the cartridge, and that it is stuck firmly. Never use non-standard labels, and never stick anything to the cartridge other than in the label area. Insert a cartridge into the slot on the front panel. The cartridge is now in a semi-loaded state. The drive threads the tape, initiates a load sequence and goes on-line. The load sequence takes approximately 20 seconds for a new tape and 15 seconds for a tape already containing data. Figure 11 4.5.3 Loading a tape cartridge During the load sequence, the following occurs: Tape LED (number 1 in Figure 12) slowly flashes green while the tape is being loaded. The Tape LED becomes a steady green to indicate the tape is loaded. If an excessive number of errors are detected, the Media Caution LED (number 2 in Figure 12) flashes amber. Tape Media Caution 1 2 Detail A Figure 12 1 2 Eject Button Front panel LEDs and tape eject button Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 15 Chapter Four - Tape Cartridges 4.6 Unloading a Tape Cartridge The cartridge ejects from the tape drive either when you press the Eject Button, or in response to a SCSI LOAD/UNLOAD command with the LOAD bit set to 0. Note: If the drive is engaged in a task when you press the Eject button, it may be a long time before it responds to the request, because it must first finish the task. This ensures that the task is terminated in a controlled manner and no data is lost. The drive rewinds, unloads and ejects the cartridge unless the drive is not in an idle state or a contingent operation (which is locking the cartridge) with the host computer is active. The Tape LED slowly flashes green while the tape unloads. Note: If the host has previously sent a PREVENT MEDIA REMOVAL command, the unloading action is different in two ways: 1. The Eject Button is disabled and has no effect when pushed. It does not initiate an unload sequence. 2. A LOAD/UNLOAD command with the LOAD bit set to zero takes the drive off-line and unthreads the tape, but does not eject the cartridge. The effects of PREVENT MEDIA REMOVAL continue until an ALLOW command is received, or the drive is reset. 4.7 MEDIA REMOVAL Forcing the Ejection of a Cartridge Caution: You may lose data if you force an eject. Also, the tape can end up invalidly formatted, because End of Data (EOD) may not have been written. Because of this, only force ejection as a last resort to recover a cartridge or if you are not prepared to wait for the normal eject procedure and urgently need to unload the cartridge, even at the risk of losing data. Press the Eject Button three times within a 5-minute period (or press the Eject Button twice within 5 minutes after a initiating a SCSI UNLOAD command). Hold the Eject Button down for at least 5 seconds. Following either of these actions, the drive waits until 35 seconds have passed from the first time that the Eject Button is pushed to give the normal eject procedure a chance to proceed. Once this period has elapsed, the drive immediately unthreads the tape and ejects the cartridge, regardless of what operation it was performing.. The drive is then reset as though the power has been switched off and then on again. Note: Forced ejection overrides any SCSI PREVENT MEDIA REMOVAL command that may be in effect, and can abort any SCSI operations that may be in progress on the drive. If the host has previously sent a PREVENT MEDIA REMOVAL command, the unloading action is different in two ways: 1. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide MEDIA REMOVAL 16 Chapter Five - SCSI Bridge Electronics 5.1 Introduction to the Subsystem Display At the heart of the display system is the Infourmm fast SCSI bridge, which provides performance information about the tape operation. In addition to bridging communications between the host and tape drive, Infourmm autonomously sends commands to the tape drive to extract the data necessary for the display. A high-performance CPU and dual SCSI buses allow the unit (1) to appear to the host as a tape device on the host bus, and (2) to interface with the tape drive as a new host on the tape bus. This private tape bus can operate independently of a host to provide such capabilities as tape mirroring, offline drive testing and tape duplication. Other features include: Fast SCSI-2 design, software configuration retained in nonvolatile memory, flash memory for firmware upgrade, and low semiconductor parts count for reliability. 5.2 Front Panel LCD A four-line, eight-character-per-line, backlit LCD provides you with performance information, configuration selections, diagnostic and special utility menus. During tape activity, the LCD shows the current tape-drive operation, a bar graph tracking tape capacity, and items such as total data transferred, average transfer rate, compression ratio, ECC rate percentage, remaining tape capacity, and rewrite percentage. When you enter the configuration, diagnostic or utility menus, the LCD presents a series of items to choose from and instructions to follow. 4-Line LCD, 8-Characters per line Mode Switch Programmable Error-Alert LED Figure 13 5.3 Compression Indicator LED Display unit controls and indicators Mode Switch The mode switch is located in the right, lower corner of the display unit. It is used to select the SCSI ID, access the off-line utilities and to perform the initial setup of the subsystem. 5.4 Display Unit LEDs The display unit has two LEDs, one green and one amber. The green LED indicates that data compression is active. The amber LED is a user-programmable, error-alert indicator that lights when the error-rate percentage reaches a predetermined value. This value may be set and/or altered using the mode switch in conjunction with the setup menus. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 17 Chapter Five - SCSI Bridge Electronics 5.5 Understanding the Capacity Bar Graph The capacity bar graph dynamically tracks remaining and consumed capacities. It updates dynamically during read and write operations. Beginning with the native capacity of the cartridge, as reported by the tape drive after a cartridge is loaded, Infourmm applies the then current average compression ratio (if any), computes the then current maximum capacity, and displays the bar graph by incrementing the appropriate number of vertical bars between the empty icon and the full icon. There are thirty such vertical bars, each equating to approximately 3.33% percent of total capacity. Empty Icon Read E F ECC Rate 0.0% Full Icon Capacity Indicators Figure 14 5.6 Understanding the capacity bar graph Initial LCD After applying power to the subsystem, Infourmm attempts to find the drive at the tape ID. Typically, tape drives require a few seconds to perform their self-test before they respond; therefore, the subsystem is not selectable to the host during this period. InFourmm ======== Power-on SelfTest Initial Power-Up Screen Figure 15 Subsystem's LCD at startup When the drive is found, the LCD presents the tape-drive ID and firmware level on the top two lines, and the product name, firmware level and SCSI ID on the bottom two lines. Write E F TOTL XFR 74MB Figure 18 Current tape operation display Additionally, off-line utilities use this area to display tape-drive errors. The SCSI Request Sense command provides information about an error. Interpretation for bytes 2, 12 and 13 of Request Sense data may be found in your tape drive manual. For example, the following cyclic display indicates that an attempted write to a write-protected tape caused the failure. ERROR KEY=47 ASC=27 SCQ=00 Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 19 Chapter Five - SCSI Bridge Electronics 5.7.2 Total Data Transferred Total data bytes read or written to/from the subsystem show with a KB (1024), MB (1024 x 1024) or GB (1024 x 1024 x 1024) multiplier. On the first read or write command following a rewind, the count is set to zero. Write E F TOTL XFR 74MB Figure 19 5.7.3 Total data transferred LCD Transfer Rates in KBytes per Second The average transfer rate between the host and the subsystem is calculated by dividing the total data transferred by the elapsed time since the first read or write command following a rewind or write filemark. Write E F XFR RATE 425KB/s Figure 20 Note: Transfer rate LCD Tape drives incorporate a data buffer to help maintain a constant data rate to the recording heads. When this buffer is empty, 1 MB of data or more can appear to be instantly written to the tape drive and a correspondingly high transfer rate displays. When the buffer is sufficiently full, the recording heads are set in motion. A substantial delay accompanies this first write-to-tape (much like the delay you experience after pressing the play button of a VCR). This results in a drop in the transfer rate. With continued writing to the subsystem, the tape constantly moves and the average transfer rate approaches the quoted streaming rate. 5.7.4 Compression Ratio Write E F COMPRESS 2.3:1 Figure 21 Compression ratio LCD The average compression/decompression ratio shows as the ratio of the compressed and uncompressed data lengths as reported by the tape drive. The ratio is always displays in the format X.X:X. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 20 Chapter Five - SCSI Bridge Electronics 5.7.5 Remaining Capacity This value is an estimate of remaining tape capacity. It is computed by multiplying the average compression ratio by the remaining block count. KB, MB and GB represent multipliers of 1024, 1024 x 1024, and 1024 x 1024 x 1024, respectively. Read E F REMAIN'G 1.7GB Figure 22 5.7.6 Remaining capacity readout ECC/Rewrite Percentage The number of ECC (when reading) or rewrite (when writing) occurrences, as a percentage of the total number of read or write commands since the last rewind, display in the format XX.X. In general, error rates are the highest at the beginning of a tape since this part of the tape is written to every time the tape unloads. When this area becomes worn, tapes become unreliable. Errors above 10.0 suggest worn tapes or the need to clean the recording heads. The menu display system consists of the following hierarchy: *Set-Up* Release Button to Start Enter Set-Up 1 PRESS to Select Enter Set-Up 2 PRESS to Select Enter Set-Up 3 PRESS to Select Exit Set-Up PRESS to Select Mode Switch Figure 25 5.10 Subsystem's setup menus Setup Overview Within each menu, the individual items generally take the following format on the four-line LCD: Parameter Instruction SCSI ID: [00] PRESS to Alter Setting LCD Setup Format Figure 26 Subsystem's LCD setup format •PARAMETER denotes the configuration being reviewed or edited. •SETTING (in SETUP 1 and SETUP 2) is the value that you can change. •INSTRUCTION describes what action should be taken if the mode switch is pressed. If the mode switch is inactive for four seconds, the display changes. In general, the menu system is designed to show continuously the current settings with the instruction PRESS to Alter, which allows the operator the opportunity to alter the value. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 22 Chapter Five - SCSI Bridge Electronics 5.10.2 Changing a Setting Depending on the menu item, alter settings by the appropriate method explained below. When the instruction reads PRESS to Alter you have the option of exiting from the editing mode ore remaining in the editing mode to review the settings. Numeric-Entry Method With this method you change settings by entering a decimal or hexadecimal number, digit-bydigit. The LCD shows the instruction PRESS to Incremnt while a highlight indicates what digit is alterable. You increment the digit by pressing the mode switch. If there is no switch activity for four seconds, the highlight proceeds to the right to the next digit. When the highlight proceeds past the rightmost digit, the display shows PRESS if Done, allowing you to confirm the changes. If the numerical value requires additional editing, do not press the mode switch. Wait until the highlight restarts at the leftmost digit and then continue editing the setting. Note: 5.11.2 The ability to set independently the tape drive's SCSI ID and the host subsystem's SCSI ID is very useful. As you add devices to a system's SCSI bus, you no longer have to manipulate jumpers or switches on the tape drive. The subsystem ID can be altered from subsystem's front panel without regard to the actual physical SCSI ID of the drive itself, making SCSI device additions quick and simple. Tandem 5142-xSE Rackmount Tape Subsystems User Guide 25 Chapter Five - SCSI Bridge Electronics 5.11.5 Setting the Error-Alert (ECC/Rewrite Percentages) Thresholds The electronics allow you to set a numeric percentage for error-alert thresholds that, when exceeded, cause the amber LED (the lower LED on the subsystem's front panel) to blink. Enter error-alert thresholds by the Numeric Entry method. First, set the rewrite threshold followed by the ECC threshold. Entries take the form XX.X, so that you may enter values in the range of 00.0 percent to 99.9 percent. Setting values less than 10.0 percent is recommended. Lower values cause the amber LED to light and/or blink at a lower percentage of error occurrences. Note: Because the beginning of tape is written to every time a tape is unloaded, this area of the tape tends to wear sooner than the rest of the tape media's length. As a result, it is not unusual to experience rewrites or ECC's at the beginning of tape. If such occurs, the predetermined thresholds may be exceeded early, but the percentage then drops below the threshold as reading or writing moves further down the tape. To signal this, the error-alert LED blinks when the error rates currently exceed the set values, but returns to a steady illumination if, once exceeded, the error rate falls below the set value. To prevent contamination of the subsystem and damage to the heads (1) do not use the cleaning cartridge for more than the manufacturer's specified number of cleaning cycles; and (2) do not attempt to rewind the material in the cleaning cartridge and reuse it. Insert the cleaning cartridge into the drive. The drive automatically takes the cartridge, loads it and cleans the heads. After about 30 seconds, the drive ejects the cartridge. Note: 2. 6.2 If the cartridge ejects after only about 15 seconds, this means the cartridge has reached the end of its useful life, and no cleaning has occurred. Cleaning the LCD Put household glass cleaner on a soft cloth and wipe screen. Caution: 6.3 Do not spray the cleaner directly on the LCD because the liquid might drip into the enclosure or computer.
