Document Summary This issue presents as a new device out of the box, that powers up with the control panel message “54.01 REMOVE SEALING TAPE”.
Issue Description: A new device out of the box powers up with the control panel message “54.01 REMOVE SEALING TAPE”. This message would indicate that the new toner cartridge has been installed without removing the toner dam sealing tape. If the sealing tape has been removed, than the units is DOA. There are two copper contact pads on the left side of the toner cartridge that on initial installation of a new toner cartridge make contact with two corresponding contacts in the toner bay. When electrical continuity is achieved across these contacts a bit is set on the toner e-label. This bit indicates that this was a new toner cartridge and the sealing tape was successfully removed. After this initial check the process is not repeated as long as this bit has been set on the existing toner cartridge e-label. Workaround or Solution You can workaround this issue by installing the new toner cartridge in a different device to activate the bit set on the toner e-label. You can then install that toner cartridge in the device having the problem and it will function properly until the toner cartridge needs to be replaced. As you can see this will have to be done for each new toner cartridge, so this really isn’t a good workaround. This however can be used as a diagnostic step to confirm that this is really the problem. To resolve this issue, the unit will need to be replaced as a DOA. This is not a repairable condition. If you encounter this failure please create an escalation to division so we can track the frequency of occurrence.

Background In the picture below you can see the copper pad contact for the sealing tape check.
The corresponding contact points are shown here in the toner bay.

This is a picture showing the offending contact point. The spring on the right should be centered in the plastic circle so the spring on the upper attaching component can engage it and complete the circuit.
This issue can be definitively diagnosed by checking for continuity from the button contact on the white spring block in the toner bay and the spring contact that engages with the copper post on the power supply (as indicated by the red circles). Again this is suspected to be a manufacturing defect and is not field reparable. The unit should be replaced as DOA.
