This will improve the cold transfer and reduce energy consumption. Audible war ning signal warning Connecting to the mains The audible warning device helps to protect the frozen food and to save energy. Power supply (a.c.) and voltage at the operating point must comply with the details on the type plate, which is located at the top of the right-hand side wall of the freezer. The socket must be fused with a 10 A fuse or higher. The socket should be easily accessible and not directly behind the appliance. - It sounds when it is not cold enough in the freezer compartment. The temperature display will also flash; - when too much warm air from the outside enters when inserting, re-arranging or removing frozen food. The appliance must not be connected to DC/AC converters (e.g. on solar systems). The audible warning device is switched off by pressing the "ALARM" button. The temperature display will continue to flash until the cause of the alarm has been rectified. To ensure trouble-free operation, do not connect the appliance to the power supply until about 1/2 to 1 hour after delivery. Connect the appliance through a properly earthed plug and socket. - It sounds when the lid has been left open for longer than about 120 seconds. The audible warning device is switched off by pressing the "ALARM" button. 9 Contr ol elements Control Power failur e "fr ost-contr ol" display failure "frost-contr ost-control" Temperatur e display emperature If nA appears in the display, this means that the freezer temperature has risen too high during the last few hours or days due to a power failure. The temperature display indicates the highest temperature in the freezer. The display is designed so that only temperatures below 0°C are displayed. The temperature can rise temporarily because of inflowing warm air when fresh food is stored or when frozen food is removed or rearranged. If you press the "ALARM" button whilst the display is reading nA nA, the highest temperature registered during the power failure will be displayed. Check the quality of the food and its suitability for consumption in case it has become too warm or even defrosted. The highest temperature will appear for appox. 1 minute. After that, the actual temperature in the freezer will re-appear. The display can be switched off by repeatedly pressing the "ALARM" button. Fr eezing chart Freezing Temperatur e alarm emperature If the temperature display is flashing, this indicates that the temperature has risen too high. This may be caused by a long power failure or other disturbance. The audible warning signal will sound at the same time. Press the "ALARM" button to switch the signal off. When the temperature drops again and reaches about -14°C, the temperature display will stop flashing and will light constantly. If "F4" or "F5" appears in the display, the appliance has a fault. It will be kept at the right temperature by means of a safety circuit. Consult your nearest customer service point, quoting the type of appliance, index and service number number. Child-pr oof lock Child-proof The child-proof lock is designed to protect the appliance from being switched off accidentally. • Switching on the child-proof lock: Hold down the "ALARM" button and then press the s button, and keep both buttons pressed simultaneously for approx. 2 seconds. - A double beep confirms your entry. - The LED will come on. • Switching off the child-proof lock: Press this key combination again; the LED will now go out. The yellow "SUPERFROST" lamp lights up when the "SUPERFROST" facility is switched on for freezing large quantities of fresh food (see "Freezing"). 10 This is located on the inside of the freezer lid. The freezing chart represents the frozen food and the time it can be safely stored in months. The recommended times indicated are guidelines; detailed instructions should be obtained from the manufacturer's packaging or a specialist book on freezing. The individual storage times and whether or not the lower or upper value is applicable depend on the food quality, its processing prior to freezing, and the individual household's quality requirements. The lower values always apply to food with a high fat content: animal and fish fats tend to become rancid (e.g. fish can be kept frozen for 2-6 months, depending on the quality and kind of fish). Fr eezing, storage Freezing, Fr eezing Freezing Fresh food should be frozen to the core as rapidly as possible. Frozen food can also be given a cold boost. This is provided by the "Superfrost" facility and ensures that the nutritional value, appearance and flavour of the food remain intact. • The maximum amount of food wich can be frozen in 24 hours is shown on the type plate ("Freezing capacity ...kg/24 hours") Í. This amount varies according to the model and climate rating. NB: The upper stacking limit is the top level of the basket! Storage When storing pre-frozen food, you can fill the appliance straight away. It is not necessary to use the "Superfrost" facility. Fr eezing with "SUPERFROST" Freezing • Press the "SUPERFROST" button. The yellow Superfrost lamp comes on. The refrigeration unit then operates without interruption, the temperature drops and frozen food already stored receives an additional boost. • For small amounts of frozen food 6 hours. The maximum amount (see type plate) requires 24 hours. • Place the fresh food in the freezer. After a further 24 hours the fresh food is frozen. The Superfrost function switches off automatically. Depending on the quantity of food placed in the freezer, this will normally be between 24 and max. 48 hours. The appliance will then switch back to the previously set temperature. NB: When you press the Superfrost button, the compressor might not switch on for up to 8 minutes. This is due to the integrated risedelay switch which is designed to increase the life span of the refrigeration unit. Note: To save energy, "Superfrost" can be switched off before the 24 hours have elapsed by pressing the "SUPERFROST" button again. Ensure that the temperature is at least -18°C and that it cannot rise any further as a result of fresh food being placed in the freezer. This is important for maintaining quality. When freezing small amounts of fresh food (up to approx. 2 kg daily) it is not necessary to switch on the "Superfrost" facility. Notes on fr eezing and storage freezing • Always store identical food items together to avoid the door being opened for unnecessarily long periods and to save energy. • Items suitable for freezing: meat, game, poultry, fresh fish, vegetables, fruit, dairy products, bread, baked goods, precooked meals • Not suitable: lettuce, radishes, grapes, whole apples and pears, fatty meat. • Pack food which you are freezing yourself in quantities appropriate to your household. To ensure that the food freezes right through, the following quantities should not be exeeded per package: fruit, vegetables: up to 1 kg, meat: up to 2,5 kg. • Blanch vegetables after washing and cutting them. (Add to boiling water for 2-3 minutes, remove and quickly cool down in cold water. If you blanch with a steamer or microwave oven, please observe the relevant operating instructions.) • Do not salt or season fresh food or blanched vegetables before freezing. Only lightly salt and season other food. The intensity of flavour of some spices can change. • Use material or containers suitable for freezing to wrap the food. The material must be sufficiently strong, neutral in flavour and impermeable to air and liquids in order to avoid loss of quality. • Do not allow fresh food which is to be frozen to come into contact with food already frozen. Always keep packs dry in order to avoid them sticking together. • Always write the date and contents on the pack and do not exeed the stated storage time for the food. This prevents any risk of quality impairment. • Do not freeze bottles and cans which contain carbonated drinks as they might burst. Drinks can be placed in the freezer to cool them down quickly, but take the bottles out again after an hour at the most. • Only take out as much food as is immediately required for thawing. Use food which has been thawed in prepared meals as quickly as possible. GB Frozen food can be thawed in the following ways: – in a fan oven – in a microwave oven – at room temperature – in the refrigerator: the cold given off by the frozen food is used for cooling. Solid cuts of meat and fish can be cooked when partly thawed. Vegetables can be cooked from frozen (in half the normal time). 11 Equipment Interior light The interior light switches on automatically when the lid is opened and switches off again when it is closed. Bulb data: 15 W (never use a bulb rated at more than 15 W). The voltage should agree with the details on the type plate. Socket: E 14. Replacing the bulb: Pull out the mains plug or remove/unscrew the fuse. - Remove the cover panel in the direction of the arrow. - Change the bulb. - Replace the cover panel. Cold-storage accumulators (depending on options) The cold-storage accumulators provided prevent the temperature in the freezer from rising too quickly in the event of a power failure, thus preserving the quality of the food. In order to ensure that the cold-storage accumulators freeze as fast as possible, place them in direct contact with the inside walls or floor of the freezer. Once they are frozen through, place them as close to the top of the freezer as possible by putting them on top of the freezer trays provided, which you can then place anywhere on the top row of baskets. The accumulator trays can also be used to freeze berries and fruit or to collect defrost water, and can be stacked in the same way as the freezer trays used as dividing walls. Baskets The baskets make it easier for you to sort food. The baskets at the top can be suspended in the frame of the freezer by their handles. The baskets underneath stand on the floor of the freezer or on the inward-facing handles of the very bottom basket. Press the handle downwards, lift and tilt inwards. To remove the bottom baskets, simply grasp the handles from above. Lock If your appliance has no lock fitted, you can fit one retrospectively. Fr eezer tray (depending on options) Freezer The dividing wall between the pre-freezing compartment and the storage compartment consists of two freezer trays, depending on the model. Placed on top of each other, they fit exactly underneath the basket inserted into the pre-freezing compartment. You can use the freezer tray to gently freeze fruit (e.g. berries or slices of fruit), herbs and vegetables for serving or garnishing. Spread the food out loosely on the tray (the pieces of fruit will retain their shape and will not stick together). Freeze for 10 to 12 hours, then transfer to a freezer bag or container and store in one of the baskets. To defrost, spread the frozen items out loosely again. 12 „Stop-Fr ost“ System „Stop-Frost“ This appliance is fitted with the new >stop-frost system< system<. This system considerably reduces the formation of ice so that the appliance hardly ever needs defrosting. It also equalises the pressure immediately after closing the lid, so that it can be opened several times in quick succession if need be. How it works: A dry cartridge embedded in the foam in the freezer lid creates a connection between the outside and the inside. During the cooling phase in normal appliances, moist air is sucked in through the lid seal, which ultimately results in the formation of ice and frost. The >stop-frost system< absorbs this moisture, so that only dry air is allowed to penetrate inside. The dry air flows back outside when the refrigeration system is idle, and in doing so removes any moisture in the dry cartridge. Defr osting Defrosting Malfunctions After a longer period of operation a layer of frost or ice can build up on the cooling elements. If the frost or ice layer is too thick, the energy consumption will increase. Remove a frost layer of this kind from time to time with a plastic scraper. Your appliance is designed and manufactured for a lengthy, reliable operating life with no malfunctions. If a malfunction nonetheless occurs during operation, check whether it is due to an operating error. Please note that even during the warranty period the resultant servicing costs in this case will have to be borne by the owner. If a layer of ice has formed, the cooling elements should be defrosted and the inside surfaces cleaned. • Switch on "Superfrost" the day before defrosting to give the food a cold boost. • Switch the appliance off to defrost. Pull out the mains plug or remove/unscrew the fuse. • Wrap the frozen food, possibly still in the freezer basket, in paper or blankets and store in a cool place. • Remove the plug from the drain opening. Remove the dividing wall or freezer tray and place underneath the appliance so that the defrosted water escapes through the drain opening into the dividing wall or the freezer tray. • To speed up the defrosting process, put a saucepan of hot but not boiling water inside the appliance. • Leave the lid open while defrosting. After defrosting mop up the remaining water and clean the appliance. If your appliance does not have a drain opening, wipe up the defrosted water with a sponge or a cloth. Do not use any mechanical devices or other artificial aids for defrosting other than those recommended by the manufacturer. GB You may be able to rectify the following faults by checking the possible causes yourself: • Appliance does not function: the control lamps are not lit. - Is the plug correctly fitted in the mains socket? - Is the socket fuse intact? • Loud running noise: - Is the appliance set up firmly on the floor? - Does the appliance cause nearby items of furniture or objects to vibrate? Please note that noises caused by the refrigerant circuit cannot be avoided. • The temperature is not low enough: - Is the temperature setting correct (see "Setting the temperature")? - Have excessive amounts of fresh food been placed in the appliance? Observe the temperature display for a further 24 hours. - Does the separately installed thermometer show the correct reading? - Is the ventilation system working properly? - Is the appliance set up too close to a heat source? If none of the above causes apply and you cannot rectify the fault yourself, contact the nearest customer service department stating the type of appliance Ê, index Ë and service number Ì as indicated on the type plate. The 1 2 type-plate is located on the top of III IIII Index II / III the right-hand side wall of the freez3 er. Keep the lid closed if there is a fault. Clean the inside, equipment parts and outer walls with lukewarm water and a little detergent. Do not use abrasive or acid cleaners or chemical solvents. Do not use steam cleaners because of the risk of injury and damage. • Ensure that no cleaning water penetrates into the electrical components or ventilation grille. • Dry all parts well with a cloth. • The ventilation grilles should be cleaned regularly with a brush or vacuum cleaner. Dust deposits increase energy consumption. Ensure that none of the wires or other components are dislodged, bent or damaged. Shutting your appliance down If your appliance is to be shut down for any length of time, switch it off and disconnect the plug or remove the fuse. Clean the appliance and leave the lid open in order to prevent unpleasant smells. The refrigerant circuit has been tested for leaks. The appliance is radio-suppressed to EN 55014 and thus complies with EC Directive 87/308/EEC. All types and models are subject to continuous improvement and the manufacturer therefore reserves the right to make modifications to the shape, equipment and technology. 13
