Admonishments Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments — in the form of Dangers, Warnings, and Cautions — must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence. Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided.

Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided.

COAXIAL CABLE TERMINATION Follow the step-by-step procedure when terminating coaxial cables. 1. Cut coax cable to the proper length using the coax cutting tool. See Figure 5 or Figure 6. 0.594 IN (15.09 MM) 0.344 IN (8.74 MM)

2. Slide crimp sleeve onto the cable, placing it at least 3-inches (7.6 cm) from the end of the cable. See Figure 7. Marked end of crimp sleeve should face away from the cut end of cable.
MARKED END OF CRIMP SLEEVE AWAY FROM CABLE END 4403-B

3. Follow the instruction sheet included with the stripping tool for adjusting the cutting depth of each blade of the stripping cassette. Adjust the blade depths to cut the appropriate layers of the coaxial cable. The blades should not cut beyond the appropriate layer of the coaxial cable. (i.e., The blade that cuts the outer jacket should not cut into the braided shield and the blade that cuts the dielectric should not cut into the center conductor, etc.). • Some coaxial cables have a metallic foil shield under the braided shield. This foil shield must be cut to the same dimension as the braided shield. • Using the specified stripping tool and black stripping cassette, strip the layers of the coaxial cable. (See Figure 5 or Figure 6.) 4. Snip the center conductor so there is a measurement of 0.156 inch (3.9 mm) for all BNC connectors except BNC-25 or 0.125 (3.18 mm) for BNC-25.

5. Slide a center conductor pin over the center conductor of cable, against dielectric. The center conductor should be visible in the inspection hole for all but the BNC-3T type connectors. Trim (See Step 4.) cable center conductor so that the conductor is visible in the inspection hole and base of pin is seated against the dielectric as shown in Figure 8. 6. Center conductor pins may be crimped using 0.042 square, hex, 8-point or 12 point tools. Using the specified crimp tool and crimp die, crimp the center pin in place making sure the flange of the center pin butts against the crimp die. To test the crimped center pin, moderately pull on the pin. Note: Alternately if a suitable crimp tool is not available, the pin may be soldered. Care should be used to ensure that solder does not build-up on the outside surface of the pin. Failure to follow this procedure may result in poor electrical performance, or poor mechanical retention of the center pin. Note: Figures in this installation procedure show the straight connector. The procedure is the same for all other connectors (right angle, bulkhead, etc.). 7. While feeding the center pin through the ferruled end of the connector shell, slide the connector shell onto the cable (See Figure 9). The connector shell’s ferruled end slides over the dielectric (and foil shield if present) and under the braided shield. Push the cable into the connector shell until the center pin locks into the connector shell. You should feel a slight “click” when the center pin locks into the insulator. A slight tug backwards on the pin should not dislodge it. It may be reinserted into the insulator/body of the connector if it comes out. The connector shell should not easily slide off the cable when the center pin is locked into the connector shell.

8. Slide the crimp sleeve over the braided shield until it butts against the connector shell. (See Figure 10). The crimp sleeve will cover approximately 0.125 inch (3.2 mm) of the cable’s outer jacket. None of the braided shield should be exposed between the crimp sleeve and the connector shell. CRIMP SLEEVE
4646-B
Figure 10. Crimp Sleeve
9. Using the specified crimp tool and crimp die, center the die over the crimp sleeve and crimp in place. (See Figure 11). To test the crimp strength, exert a moderate pull on the connector shell. Using company standard procedures, test for opens or shorts. Caution: Crimp pins and crimp sleeves only once. Crimping more than one time will cause crimps to loosen, resulting in less than satisfactory cable retention.
