It features manual and automatic cable equalization for cable lengths exceeding 1,000 ft (305 m). The AES-880M/AES-880S also features data reclocking and signal error detection. Errors such as No lock, CRC mismatch, and eye pattern height errors are indicated by the card edge LEDs, and can be selected to assert a contact closure for external alarm notification. DAC-880 The DAC-880 is a 20 bit digital audio to analog audio converter. It features 20 bit digital data conversion to professional analog audio with full-scale values of +24 and +18 dBu. It also includes dual stereo analog outputs with 110Ω balanced AES inputs. ADC-880 The ADC-880 analog to digital audio converter converts two channels of balanced analog audio into a single AES3-1992 digital audio signal at 20 bit resolution. It can be used in any of the 880 series frames, and can be used as a stand-alone A-to-D converter, or in conjunction with several A-to-D converters linked by a common external sampling reference signal. The ADC-880 has six 110Ω balanced digital outputs. 2 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation Chapter 2 880 Series Frames Overview All equipment is carefully inspected and calibrated before shipment to ensure years of stable and trouble-free service. • Review “Unpacking a Product” on page vii and “Returning a Product” on page vii. • Inspect the equipment for any visible damage which may have occurred during transit before installation. • Make sure that all modules are properly seated in the mounting frame. 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation 3 Chapter 2: 880 Series Frames Mounting Requirements The mounting requirements of the 880 series frames are as follows: FR-881 The FR-881 mounting frame requires 1 unit of rack space: 1¾ in. FR-884 Back Panel Frame Cooling The equipment is designed to operate in an ambient temperature range of 32° F to 122° F (0° C to 50° C). No special cooling arrangements are necessary, but you should take steps to prevent excessive ambient heat rise in closed, unventilated equipment racks. Power Consumption Warning To prevent electric shock, do not use this (polarized) plug with an extension cord, receptacle or other outlet, unless the blades can be fully inserted to prevent blade exposure. 6 The 1RU FR-881 mounting frame accepts one 882PS power supply and the 1RU FR-883 frame accepts one 884PS power supply. The FR-881/883 frame power consumption is nominally 25VA. The 2RU FR-882 mounting frame accepts one 882PS power supply and the 2RU FR-884 frame accepts one 884PS power supply. Both frames are prewired to accept a second optional power supply for power backup. Their power consumption is nominally 65VA. A fully loaded frame will operate with a single power supply; however, we recommend that a second optional power supply be included for cooler operation and power redundancy. 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation Chapter 2: 880 Series Frames Power Supply 882PS The 882PS power supply is a two-stage switching power supply that provides the following outputs: • +21V at 1.0A • –21V at 1.0A Initial design criteria focused on maximizing efficiency and minimizing individual component temperature rise. This has been achieved with a two-stage design consisting of an input “Buck” converter feeding a high efficiency push-pull output stage. Overall efficiency exceeds 80%; individual component temperature rise is minimized by operating both converts at high voltage and low current ,as well as using Schottky rectifier diodes on the output stage. The power supply is designed to work over the two standard input voltage ranges. With jumper J1 installed the power supply operates over an input range of 85-135VAC and with jumper J1 removed the operating range is 170-270VAC. Output voltage is adjustable by ±10%. Other output voltages can be achieved by changing power transformer TR1 without any additional circuit changes. 884PS The model 884PS power supply is a two-stage switching power supply that provides that provides the following outputs: • +21V at 1.0A • –21V at 1.0A Initial design criteria focused on maximizing efficiency and minimizing individual component temperature rise. This has been achieved with a two stage design consisting of an input “Buck” converter feeding a high efficiency push-pull output stage. Overall efficiency exceeds 80% and individual component temperature rise is minimized by operating both converts at high voltage and low current as well as using Schottky rectifier diodes on the output stage. The power supply is designed to work over the two standard input voltage ranges. With input selector switch S2 in the 110 position, the power supply operates over and input range of 85 – 135VAC and with the switch in the 220 position the operating range is 170 – 270VAC. Output voltage is adjustable by ±10%. Other output voltages can be achieved by changing power transformer TR1 without any additional circuit changes. 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation 7 Chapter 2: 880 Series Frames 8 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation Chapter 3 AES-880M/AES-880S AES/EBU Distribution Amplifier Overview The AES-880M/AES-880S is an 8-output AES/EBU digital audio distribution amplifier. Using twisted pair cable, the AES-880M/AES-880S distribution amplifier features cable auto-equalization, data reclocking, and incoming data error detection and reporting. The error detection and reporting features utilize front mounted LEDs and an optional external alarm contact closure. Housed in FR-880 series frames, this DA meets the AES interface standards according to AES3-1992 (ANSI 54.40-1992). The AES-880M can directly replace the mono analog audio distribution amplifier in an installed system, without any rewiring. Typically, FR-881 or FR-882 are used in this type of system. The AES-880S is also designed to work in all FR-880 series frames and can directly replace a stereo analog audio distribution amplifier. Coupled by an input transformer, the AES audio signal is equalized using either manual or automatic EQ, depending on which jumper setting is selected. After equalization the signal is reconstructed to a standard clock rate. The signal continues through a buffer to eight output stages where a RS-485 bus transceiver drives a transformer with a 110Ω load in each of the eight output ports. If transmission errors occur with the incoming AES signal, they will be detected and reported by LEDs and a selected optional external alarm contact closure. The external alarm reporting manner can be customized by jumper settings, as shown in Figure 3-1. 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation 9 Chapter 3: AES-880M/AES-880S AES/EBU Distribution Amplifier Functional Block Diagram Figure 3-1. AES-880M/AES-880S Functional Block Diagram Operation Figure 3-2. AES-880M/AES-880S The AES-880M/AES-880S fits in the FR-880 series frames. Specifically designed for AES on twisted pair cable, this DA treats the AES signal as a digital stream and provides automatic equalization, reclocking and signal processing, as well as customized error detection and reporting. The front mounted LEDs show the errors detected by the DA, while an external alarm contact closure provides another error reporting feature, if contact closure output mode is selected. Several customization settings are permitted with this DA using jumper settings. 10 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation Chapter 3: AES-880M/AES-880S AES/EBU Distribution Amplifier EQ Adjustment This distribution amplifier provides two options for EQ adjustment: manual and automatic. The mode is selected using jumper J1 near the front edge of DA card, as shown in Figure 3-3. Manual EQ In manual adjust mode a card-edge mounted, multiturn potentiometer manual EQ adjust (R2) is used for adjusting equalization. The confidence flag warning on the card-edge-mounted LED indicator can be used to determine the amount of EQ required without external test equipment. If the confidence flag error light is on, then more EQ is needed. To increase the amount of EQ, simply turn the manual EQ adjustment potentiometer with a screwdriver clockwise until the confidence LED indicator turns off. Automatic EQ Note The factory default configurations for J1 is in the “AUTO” position and Manual EQ Adjust (R2) is set to zero compensation. In automatic adjust mode, the DA automatically sets the amount of cable EQ needed. This mode eliminates the need to readjust the EQ if another DA is installed or exchanged, or if cable length changes. The EQ is designed to use 1,000 ft (305 m) of Belden 8451 (or equivalent) cable. When this LED is on, the external alarm contact closure is asserted, indicating an error has occurred. Jumpers J10A-F are used for setting a custom configuration. When all of the jumpers are in place, any of the condition errors will trigger the contact closure alarm to be asserted. If one of these jumpers is removed, then the error condition associated with the missing jumper may occur but will not trigger the contact closure alarm to be asserted and the alarm LED will not light. Whenever the contact closure alarm is asserted, the alarm LED will light and an alarm contact closure signal will be sent out. 14 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation Chapter 3: AES-880M/AES-880S AES/EBU Distribution Amplifier Figure 3-6. Contact Closure Alarm Indicator External Alarm Note In this mode only seven AES/ EBU outputs are provided, since the eighth is used for the alarm. An external alarm may be connected to the 880 series frame, housing this and other DAs. The alarm can be shared either by all the DA cards housed within the frame or by any number of cards housed within the frame depending on how the eighth output is wired. Therefore, if a card within the frame properly configured for the external alarm output mode detects and triggers the contact closure alarm, the external alarm would be asserted. In the External Alarm output mode, shunts of jumpers J2 and J3 on the responding DA cards should be moved to the first and second position and the eighth output on the back panel of the frame should be connected (see Figure 3-7). 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation 15 Chapter 3: AES-880M/AES-880S AES/EBU Distribution Amplifier Figure 3-7. The unit is available with looping 110Ω balanced inputs. Accepting data at 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz, the DAC-880 is a complete digital audio to stereo analog converter. The module receives and decodes data according to the AES3-1992 standard and will identify a loss of input signal or clock with a card front error LED. The D/A converter uses a 128X oversampled delta-sigma modulator and filtering to provide high-quality interpretation of 20 bit data. Converted data is distributed to dual analog stereo outputs (2 left, 2 right). Full-scale analog output level is jumper selectable for either +18 dBu or +24 dBu with ± 2 dB card front adjustment. Outputs are to our typical high broadcast quality standards. The module is available for use in all 880 series frames. 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation 17 Chapter 4: DAC-880 AES/EBU Digital Audio to Analog Audio Converter Functional Block Diagram Figure 4-1. It can be used in any 880 Series frame; and can be used as a standalone A-to-D converter, or in conjunction with several A-to-D converters linked by a common external sampling reference signal. The ADC-880 has six 110Ω balanced digital outputs. The ADC-880 uses a 20 bit, 64X oversampling Sigma-Delta A-to-D converter that can sample an audio signal at 48 kHz or 44.1 kHz based on an external reference signal, or on an internal reference signal generated onboard. An audio signal may also be sampled at variable rates from 32 kHz to 50 kHz, based on an external reference signal. Input to the ADC-880 can be AC or DC coupled, and the input attenuation can be set in calibrated 2 dB increments from +16 dBu to +30 dBu maximum analog audio input levels. A gain control allows continuous adjustment of ± 2 dB. 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation 23 Chapter 5: ADC-880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter Functional Block Diagram Figure 5-1. ADC-880 Functional Block Diagram Operation Analog Audio Input The ADC-880 has two balanced audio input channels which are typically used for stereo audio inputs (left and right). The audio input stage processes the analog audio signal prior to its conversion to a digital signal. To accommodate various nominal analog audio levels, each input channel has a selectable attenuator that allows the full scale digital output level (-0 dBFS) to correspond to the user’s maximum audio signal level. The attenuator can be set in 2 dB increments from +16 dBu to +30 dBu. Factory default setting +28 dBu. Gain can be adjusted on each channel over a ± 2 dB range. The gain adjustments are set at the factory from a high precision audio test reference signal such that the full-scale digital output level (-0 dBFS) corresponds precisely with the calibrated selectable attenuator positions of +16 dBu to +30 dBu (described above). The gains can be adjusted by the user to match specific level requirements for full-scale digital audio signal levels. See page 24 for detailed information on gain setting of the ADC-880. In addition to performing audio level attenuation, the analog input stage allows the analog audio inputs to be AC or DC coupled. The factory default is AC coupled, and this is the recommended mode of operation. If the ADC-880 is set to DC coupled, any DC signal present on the analog audio input signals will be a source of error in the A-to-D conversion. See page 27 for detailed information. 24 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation Chapter 5: ADC-880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter The analog input stage rejects common mode signals that may be present on the audio input signals, and provides over voltage protection for the A-to-D converter. External Sampling Reference The ADC-880 external sampling reference input allows multiple units to be synchronized to a common AES11 sampling reference signal, such as that generated from the DAR-6880 reference generator. A standard AES3 digital audio signal may also be used. The ADC-880 cannot accept word clock, or a video signal, as a reference input. But the ADC-880 can be locked to a video signal through the use of the DAR-6880 reference generator, which can be locked to video. See page 28 for detailed information on setting the external sampling reference. 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation 25 Chapter 5: ADC-880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter Configuration There are several settings on the ADC-880 necessary for proper operation. These settings are outlined below. Attenuation Jumpers The attenuation jumpers allow the digital output signal level to be set over a 14 dB range, from +16dBu analog input = 0 dBFS digital output, to +30 dBu analog input = 0 dBFS digital output, in calibrated 2 dB increments. This range of input levels allows operators to set the ADC-880 such that the full-scale digital output (0 dBFS) will match their maximum analog audio signal level. Because the attenuation network is of sufficient precision, the gain potentiometers do not have to be readjusted when changing input attenuation jumper settings. This allows you to set the attenuation jumper to the required setting without having to readjust the gain potentiometers or adjusting the common mode potentiometers. Figure 5-2. Attenuation Jumper Settings 26 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation Chapter 5: ADC-880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter AC or DC Coupling These jumpers allow the analog audio input to be AC or DC coupled. AC coupling is the default setting. AC coupling prevents the ADC-880 from being disturbed by a DC voltage on the analog input signal. Figure 5-3. AC or DC Coupling Configuration 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation 27 Chapter 5: ADC-880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter Gain Gain adjustments are factory set and calibrated. Only properly trained personnel working with precise test equipment should attempt to make adjustment to gain. Gain adjustments R97 (right channel) and R23 (left channel) provide approx. ± 2 dB of gain adjustment on each channel. This allows the output digital signal level to be matched to a known analog input level from a test generator (see Figure 5-4). Figure 5-4. ADC-880 Card Edge View Sampling Reference Selection Switch The front edge of the ADC-880 has 2 toggle switches that allow the sampling reference source to be switched between internal, external, or auto mode. SW1 is an edge-mounted, 3 position toggle switch that controls the source of the sampling reference signal. SW2 is the other edge-mounted toggle switch that sets the internal sampling rate, which can be switched between 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz (see Figure 5-4). Placing SW2 in internal mode forces the ADC-880 to use one of the internal crystal oscillators as a sample reference. Depending on the setting of the sampling frequency selection switch SW2, the ADC-880 will sample at 48 or 44.1 kHz, and will not be locked to any external sources. This mode is referred to as “internal sampling” or “free run” mode. 28 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation Chapter 5: ADC-880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter Auto setting allows the ADC-880 to look for, and lock to, an external 48 or 44.1 kHz reference signal present on the external reference input. If no signal is present, or if the signal becomes unusable, it the ADC-880 will automatically switch to internal reference mode. When the external reference signal is present and usable, the ADC-880 will automatically switch back to external sampling mode, and will be locked to the external reference signal. External setting forces the ADC-880 to lock to the external reference only. If there is no external reference present, or if it becomes unusable, the ADC-880 will stop sampling audio data until the external reference is restored. External mode should be used if the external reference input is not 48 or 44.1kHz. This setting allows external reference inputs for sampling rates to be anywhere between 32 and 50 kHz. The sampling reference selection switch can be changed during operation of the ADC-880. The unit does not have to be powered down to change this switch setting. Sampling Frequency Selection Switch The sampling frequency selection switch determines which internal sampling reference the ADC-880 will use when it is in internal mode. When in the 48kHz position, and the ADC-880 is not locked to an external reference (i.e. the Ext. Ref. LED is not on), then the sampling rate will be 48 kHz. When in the 44.1 kHz position, and not locked to an external reference, the sampling rate will be 44.1 kHz (see Figure 5-4). Whenever the ADC-880 is locked to an external reference (i.e., the Ext. Ref. LED is on), then this switch will have no effect. The unit does not need to be powered down to switch between 48 and 44.1 kHz. 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation 29 Chapter 5: ADC-880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter Calibration Button A momentary push-button located at the front-edge of the ADC-880 initiates an internal calibration of the A-to-D converter input circuitry. See Figure 5-5 for the location of this Calibration Button. The internal calibration is also performed each time power is applied to the ADC-880. It also mutes the digital data at the output of the ADC-880. During this calibration time (approx. 1 second), the analog audio input signal is disconnected and the inputs are shorted to ground. This is accomplished via relays RL1 and RL2. The user's inputs are not shorted to ground. The calibration procedure removes any DC offsets present on the ADC-880 input circuit, and any DC offset in the CS5390 IC’s internal input stage. Figure 5-5. Calibration Button Location 30 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation Chapter 5: ADC-880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter LED Indicators LED indicators show power on, sampling rate, lock to an external sampling reference, and external sampling reference source errors. Power LED The green power LED indicates that power is present across the +V and -V inputs to the ADC-880. It does not guarantee that the input power is within the proper input voltage range. It also does not indicate that each of the voltage regulators is working properly. Sampling Frequency The green sampling frequency LEDs indicate if the ADC-880 is sampling at 48 or 44.1 kHz. If the ADC-880 is set to external sampling mode, and the external reference is not at 4vb8 or 44.1 kHz, then the ADC-880 will indicate that it is locked to an external reference (via the Ref. Pres. LED), but will not have either sampling frequency LED illuminated. This condition is valid, but the external reference signal must be between 32 and 50 kHz for the CS5390 IC to be able to lock to it. External Reference Present The yellow Ext. Ref. LED indicates that an external reference is present, the ADC-880 is locked to it, and using it as the sampling reference. If the ADC-880 is set to internal sampling reference, then this LED will not be Figure 5-6. LED Indicators illuminated, even if an external reference is present External Reference Error The red external reference error LED is illuminated when an error on the external reference signal is detected. 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation 31 Chapter 5: ADC-880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter Rear Connector Pin Assignments Rear connector pin assignments for the AES-880M are shown in Figure 5-7. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1. These devices may cause interference to radio and TV receivers in residential areas. 2. These devices will accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operations. Changes or modifications not expressly approved by Leitch Technology,™ the party responsible for compliance to the FCC Part 15 Rule, could void the user’s authority to operate this equipment legally in the United States. These devices do not exceed the Class A limits for radio noise emissions from digital apparatus as set out in the interference standard entitled “Digital apparatus,” ICES-003 of the Canadian Department of Communications. Additional EMC Information This device is for professional use in a controlled EMC environment, such as purpose-built broadcast studios. EMC regulations require that the radiation emitted from this unit does not exceed certain limits. These limits are only met when the front panel is closed and the two thumb screws are secured. Compliance to the EMC regulations is also dependent on the use of suitably shielded (screened) cables. Coax cables should be of the double-shielded (screened) variety. Unused BNCs should be fitted with 75Ω terminations. All audio cables should be screened with the shield (screen) making good contact with the metallic parts of the cable connectors. D-type connectors used with this unit should always have metallic shells with the shield (screen) of the cable mechanically bonded to the metal shell. It is further recommended that the D-type cable connectors be of the “dimple” variety. These connectors make a better contact and consequently improve EMC performance. 880 Series AES Digital Audio Products Instruction Manual Copyright © 1996-1997, 200-2004, 2008, Harris Corporation 53 Appendix A: Safety Precautions, Certifications, and Compliances Safety Standards Table A-2.
