Last Week The 22nd-ranked LMU women’s volleyball team went 1-2 at the 2000 Golden Dome Invitational hosted by Notre Dame last weekend. The Lions began the tournament with a tough 3-1 marathon loss to No. 24 Notre Dame. LMU battled with Notre Dame for nearly three hours before the Irish finally recorded the victory in game four by the necessary two-point win margin. The Lions then suffered their second straight loss to No.4 Colorado State, 3-0, in just 57 minutes. The two-match losing skid was LMU’s longest of the season. The Lions rebounded from the losses and escaped Notre Dame, Ind. with a 3-0 win over Wyoming to round out the tournament. Senior outside hitter Sarah McFarland led the Lions offense yet again, she finished the weekend with 91 kills on 210 attacks and earned her fourth straight all-tournament team honors. This Week The Lions head south to San Diego, Calif. to take on San Diego State on Tuesday, Sept. 26. LMU and the Aztecs will face off in Peterson Gym at 6 p.m. The Lions then return home to open West Coast Conference play at Gersten Pavilion. For the week she averaged 9.1 kills and 2.6 digs per game. “Big Mac” Smashes LMU Record Senior outside hitter Sarah McFarland began her assault on the LMU record books with 111 total attacks vs. Notre Dame last Thursday setting a new record for attacks in a four-game match. McFarland erased the old mark of 87 set by 2000 U.S. Olympic Team member Sarah Noriega against Pepperdine Nov. 22, 1997. McFarland connected for 45 kills against the Irish coming just three shy of the mark for kills in a four-game match also set by Noriega. Lions In The Rankings LMU, ranked No. 22 last week, dropped one spot to No. 23 in the USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll this week. The Lions fell on the AVCA/USA Today chart following consecutive losses to No. 24 Notre Dame and No. 4 Colorado State last weekend. The Lions dropped out of the Volleyball Magazine Top 20 poll and fall to No. 22. Lions Among National Leaders It seems as though the Lions are proving to be one of the nation’s premier teams ranking among the country’s best programs in three NCAA team statistical categories. Last week, LMU ranked 17th in both hitting percentage (.287) and kills per game (17.13). The Lions also jumped in among the national assists leaders tying for the 19th spot with Utah State and California averaging 15.25 assists per game. The McFarland Watch Senior outside hitter Sarah McFarland is once again atop the NCAA statistical kills charts with 314 after leading the nation with 750 kills in 1999. For the fourth consecutive weekend she led the team with 91 kills. McFarland’s efforts earned her a spot on the 2000 Golden Dome Invitational all-tournament team, her fourth straight all-tournament award. The 6-foot-6 native of Michigan City, Ind. has also been stepping up defensively as she leads the Lions with 141 digs on the season. Gustorf Playing With Gusto Senior Allison Gustorf is living up to her leadership role as she was ranked 12th in the nation with a .421 hitting percentage last week. She currently ranks second on the team in attacks and kills and leads the starters with a .360 hitting percentage following the weekend in Notre Dame, Ind. Gustorf, a 1999 WCC honorable mention honoree, has been named to the LMU Volleyball Classic and the Blimpie/Hoosier Invitational II all-tournament teams this season. Oehlman Aces The Test Freshman setter Nicole Oehlman smoked the Wyoming Cowgirls with a match-high six service aces last Saturday. The 5-10 native of Sebstopol, Calif. came just two shy of setting a new LMU record for aces in a three-game match. She currently leads the team with 15 service aces on the year. Stratos Update Head coach Steve Stratos is entering his eleventh year at the helm of the Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball program. In 10 seasons at LMU, Stratos has led the Lions to seven 20-win seasons and seven postseason appearances, which includes four consecutive in the NCAA Championships. Including the Lions record in 2000, Stratos has posted a career total of 221-95, for a .699 winning percentage, the highest in LMU volleyball history and among current WCC coaches. In West Coast Conference action, he owns a record of 108-32, for a .771 winning percentage. With 108 career conference victories, Stratos ranks second among current WCC coaches. Injury Update Middle blocker Candace Boller is sidelined for the next three to four weeks as she recovers from foot surgery in the off-season. She is expected to return to the lineup for conference play. LMU vs. No. 24 Notre Dame (Sept. 21) The 22nd-ranked Lions were upset by No. 24 Notre Dame, 3-1 (9-15, 14-16, 17-15, 14-16), at the Golden Dome Invitational held at the Joyce Center in Notre Dame, Ind. Outside hitter Sarah McFarland pounded out an incredible match-high 45 kills on 111 swings to lead LMU offensively. Notre Dame (8-3 Overall) slipped past the Lions in three of the four games winning by the necessary two point margin. LMU claimed its victory by the same two point margin in game three to avoid the sweep by the Fighting Irish. The Lions dominated Notre Dame at the net, outblocking the Irish by a 19-15 margin. At the helm of the LMU defense was McFarland again adding 21 digs and two total blocks to her impressive offensive showing. Sophomore Jaimee Brubacher also performed well for the Lions; she tallied a double-double in the match finishing with 12 kills, 10 digs and four total blocks.
