A6 1. Testing UHD Displays with UHD Alliance Test Patterns This application note provides procedures for testing UHD-capable TVs with the optional UHD Alliance Test Pattern Pack using the 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator module. The module can be equipped in either of the following 980 Advanced Test Platforms: 1) The 980B Advanced Test Platform – 5-slot chassis with a 15 inch touch display 2) The 980R Advanced Test Platform - 5-slot rack mountable chassis with a 7 inch touch display The 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator module supports video pattern testing and audio testing of 4Kx2K (ultra-high definition) HDMI 2.0 sink devices with pixel rates up to 600MHz. It is equipped with one (1) Tx port. The 980 GUI Manager is a PC application to manage and use the 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator module. 1.1 UHD Alliance Testing – Overview The UHD Alliance test patterns are called out in the Ultra-High Definition Alliance Test Specification, Version 1.01 January 27, 2015. The test pattern pack is required to assess a UHD TV’s compliance to all tests in the specification including:  Section 4.2 High Dynamic Range: Peak White  Section 4.3 High Dynamic Range: Black Level  Section 4.4 High Dynamic Range: Tone Mapping  Section 4.5 Wide Color Gamut  Section 4.6 Resolution  Section 4.7 Input Frame Rate and Bit Depth  Section 4.8 Grey-Scale Tracking Page 2 August 19, 2016 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator – Application Note Rev. A6 The following table describes the UHD Alliance Test Patterns. For a complete description of these patterns please refer to the UHD specification. Note: UHDA “Full Range Code Values” and “Narrow Range Code Values” are selected via “Full” and “Limited” settings of the Video Format “Range” parameter, respectively). We prefer to use the terms “Full” and “Limited” as they are the industry standard terms used to describe range as defined in CEA-861. Test uses spectroradiometer to determine compliance. There are 4 pattern renditions with the white center box ranging in size from 10% to 40% of the image. E.g. 2: 40% Value for white area of the patterns shall be maximum Value. - 1023 for Full Range - 940 for Narrow Range. Value for black area of pattern is 0 for Full and 64 for Narrow. When the UHD test patterns are selected through the 980 GUI interface, the module emulates an UHD-capable source by transmitting the UHD test pattern and, where required, the module will also transmit the necessary Dynamic Range and Mastering InfoFrame metadata. The Dynamic Range and Mastering InfoFrame data includes an Electro-Optical Transfer Function (EOTF) and the Static Metadata with the dynamic range of the video stream. The following illustration depicts the test setup. Page 7 August 19, 2016 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator – Application Note Page 8 Rev. UHD Alliance Test Procedures Follow the procedures below to run functional tests or compliance tests on a UHD-capable TV. 1. From the main window of the 980 GUI Manager Card Control Page, select Generator A blank Generator panel appears as shown below. 2. Select the Connect activation button on the upper right. Note: You will not have to use the Connect button if operating the instrument through the embedded GUI. Page 9 August 19, 2016 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator – Application Note Page 10 Rev. A6 August 19, 2016 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator – Application Note Rev. A6 3. Select the HDMI 2.0a Video Generator module from the right side panel. Indicated in the screen shot example below. 4. Select a UHD format using either the Left to Right selection process or the Browse method. An example of each method is shown in the screen shots that follow. 5. Select the Interface button at the top left, and make sure HDMI is selected (Not HDMI_DVI.) Page 11 August 19, 2016 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator – Application Note Rev. A6 6. Choose the EDID button at the center near the top (refer to the screen shot below). 7. On this screen, just make sure the Hot-Plug Formats Mode is not selected at the lower left (round button should be gray rather than green.) Page 12 August 19, 2016 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator – Application Note Rev. A6 8. Select the Tools tab near the top right, then select UHDA Test on the left panel of applications to access the UHDA sink compliance tests (see screen shot below). Page 13 August 19, 2016 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator – Application Note Rev. A6 9. In the top section, under Select a 2160p+BT2020 Mode, select one format button at a time. Then select either Full Range or Limited (Narrow) Range. Page 14 August 19, 2016 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator – Application Note Rev. A6 10. In the bottom section, Select a Test from the pull-down list. The buttons below will change to reflect the individual patterns or parameters corresponding to the selected test. Make one selection (Test 4.2 Center Box shown in example below). Run each test using the procedures specified in the UHDA Test Specification: Device Test Specification document. The following screens show examples of the dialog box for each test. Refer to the table in Section 1 for information about each test. Note: When running at test, click on the Apply button, and allow several seconds for the instrument to update to the selected settings. When the settings are completed, the setting indicators at the top of the screen will be updated to reflect the current selections. You may proceed with the current test Page 15 August 19, 2016 980 HDMI 2.0 Video Generator – Application Note Rev. A6 The following screen example shows the 4.2 Center Box test selected.
