A Child Passenger Safety CEU Presentation  Upon completion of this presentation, you will be able to : › Recognize and name at least (3) new car seats available on the market. › State current trends in car seat manufacturing. › Calculate the anchor limits for vehicles based on the latest recommendations. Some of the car seats you will see in this section have been on the market for a few years. They are still important to review because many technicians are unfamiliar with them. Weight limit: 4 to 35 lbs. Height limit: 30 in. or less The LSP side protectors on the Aton 2 transfer the initial impact of a side impact to the seat's shell. The optimized structure of the shell absorbs the forces and channels them away from your baby resulting in a 40% increase in safety. LSP is only used when the car seat is installed in an outboard position, there is no need to use it in the center seating position. The protector on the side of the door should be extended , when the child is seated in the outboard position. EUROPEAN INSTALL When installing the Aton without the Base, a front mounted belt guide allows the preferred "European" method where the shoulder belt wraps around the front of the carrier increasing safety. Height limit: 43”-52”  They have unique fold-out seat belt positioners, which are required when using this booster seat.  This has been federally approved.  Weighs 3.4 lbs. There are a lot of changes coming with LATCH over the next year. Are you ready?  In order to use LATCH, you will need to know the weight of the child AND the weight of the seat.  Every new car seat will have the weight of the seat listed on the labeling.  In order to determine at what weight a car seat must be installed with a seat belt instead of the LATCH system, you need to use the following formula:  65 lbs. – car seat weight = maximum weight of child for LATCH use  A family comes into your check event with their 3-year who weighs 38 lbs. They have purchased a high-weight harness seat and want to use LATCH. The seat weighs 17 lbs. Can they still use LATCH? 65 lbs – 17 lbs (seat) = 48 lb limit on LATCH  Initial Response: The child could be within the recommended weight range for LATCH use.  Next Step: What does the vehicle manufacturer state as the weight limit on LATCH?  Most vehicle manufacturers are following the newly recommended formula for new vehicles.  Some are following the new formula retroactively - meaning it applies to older vehicles as well.  Some are still following the old guidelines of only using LATCH until 40 or 48 lbs.   How will you know what the vehicle recommends? › Check the vehicle owner’s manual. › Call the vehicle manufacturer. › Use the 2013 LATCH manual available from Safe Ride News. (Cost = $37) If you are unable to determine the maximum allowable weight for LATCH use at the time of the check, it’s better to be safe than sorry.  Assume the limit is 40 lbs and use the seat belt to install the car seat.  Find out the information after the check and follow-up with the family.  What does Ford’s new inflatable seat belt mean for car seat users? Ford’s inflatable seat belt works like any other seat belt prior to a crash.  If crash sensors determine that the belt needs to inflate, it will deploy slightly before other airbags.  It spreads crash forces over 5 times more area than a regular seat belt.   Ford is currently the only vehicle manufacturer using the inflatable belts.  It is currently only available as an option on the Ford Explorer.  It will be added to the Ford Flex and Lincoln products in the near future. As with 99% of issues in the car seat world, there is no clear answer on whether or not you can use car seats with the inflatable belts.  Some manufacturer’s say “absolutely not”, others say “it’s fine”, and some say it’s “okay with Car Seat A but not Car Seat B.”  Read the owner’s manual. Most will tell you if it’s ok to use with an inflatable belt or not.  If the manual doesn’t state if it’s ok, contact the manufacturer.  If you can’t reach the manufacturer, err on the side of caution and use a different position if possible or use LATCH.  (Note: You may not be able to buckle the seat belt behind a LATCH’d seat to keep it out of the way of little fingers.) How will you stay current in the field of CPS in the future? Illinois offers an Extranet site for technicians.  You can find all kinds of resources such as order forms, links to Continuing Ed courses, on-line CEUs (such as this) and more…  Email [email protected] if you need the user name and password – but you should have it if you are doing this presentation  More than 20 workshops are offered across Illinois throughout the year.  Workshops offer both hands-on and lecture.  All courses are pre-approved with Safe Kids.       Do you get the CPS Express from Safe Kids? It is an electronic newsletter FULL of great information. It should arrive in your email box the first day of every month. If you aren’t receiving it, check your online profile at http://cert.safekids.org/ to make sure they have your correct email. If your email is correct, check your spam folder.
