It attaches to teeth, crowns, implants, bridges and dentures, in fact anything solid. • Plaque progressively matures, from 24 hours onwards it becomes increasingly sticky and destructive. • Cleaning your teeth should be directed mostly at dislodging plaque from the gum crevices. N O R F O L K D E N TA L S P E C I A L I S T S • Any interdental cleaning methods that have been recommended will need to be implemented daily. • Use your tooth brush dry with a pea sized blob of toothpaste. When you have finished brushing, rinse the brush head but not your mouth. • An electric toothbrush should be applied at right angles to the tooth with enough pressure to introduce the outer ring of filaments into the gum crevice ( D , E & F ). Apply to each tooth for 3 seconds. • More plaque may form on the side surfaces of teeth than on the fronts or backs. Special brushes ( A ) or floss ( B C ) may be recommended to clean these interdental areas. • A manual tooth brush should be applied at 45 degrees into the gum crevice using a gentle pivoting action ( G , H & I ), apply to each tooth for 5 seconds. • Use gentle pressure, enough to blanch the gum slightly but not so much as to splay the bristles. • DO NOT SCRUB – start your brushing on the inside surfaces and work from right to left if you are right handed. • You may initially experience increased bleeding when brushing as instructed. Continue to brush but reduce the pressure if your gums are very sore. The bleeding should reduce after 2 or 3 days. A D G B E H C F I
