dove c’è un bambino A pratical guide to soothers Produced by Osservatorio Chicco SUCKING: an inborn instinct. Sucking is an inborn instinct that allows children to eat therefore to survive. It also satisfies the psychological need for reassurance and gratification in newborns, and has soothing and calming effects. Sucking is also one of the first and most important moments of neuromuscular learning that begins when the baby is still in the mother’s womb. Suction, in fact, promotes the development of the perioral muscles and determines the thrust of the tongue on the palate, thereby encouraging correct formation. Therefore it is a necessity that cannot be underestimated. THE SOOTHER: a great ally. Three good reasons to use it: 1. The soother may be used to satisfy the inborn sucking instinct of newborns and calm their crying. 2. According to research published by Pediatrics1 (the official body of the American Academy of Pediatrics), the use of a soother during sleep time can help reduce the risk of SIDS (cot death): as breathing is facilitated thanks to the position of the tongue, which is positioned further forward in the mouth and sleep is less deep2. 3. The sucking movement helps the mouth to develop properly. It is in fact recognised that the dummy, if made with specific requirements and used for 24 months, is not harmful to the mouth, and may even help prevent certain dental malocclusions. On the other hand, thumb sucking can cause damage because the thumb exercises more intense pressure on the teeth and the palate, it is more cumbersome and compact and it is also a very difficult habit to get children to lose3. 1 Hauck FR et al. Do pacifiers reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome? A meta-analysis. Pediatrics 2005;116:716-23. 2 Analysis of the international literature and scientific evidence on the use of pacifiers, carried out by the Scientific Committee of the Italian Orthodontics Society (SIDO), in collaboration with the Osservatorio Chicco. 3 Epidemiologic Research SIDO. THE EXPERT’S OPINION Prof. Luca LEVRINI (Università degli Studi dell’Insubria / University Medical Executive of the Ospedale di Circolo di Varese): In order to guarantee the benefits of physiological sucking, the characteristics of the dummy teat are necessary and determining. It should be: • orthodontic, in order to promote the proper development of the jaw bones; • active, since it stimulates the best deglutition and positioning of the tongue, the proper perioral muscular tone and the dental eruption; • physiological, because it doesn’t interfere with the natural functions of the oral apparatus; • pleasant, in order to completely satisfy the baby during suction. Chicco has developed the soother with an Orthodontic and ACTIVE teat, since it actively favours the functional development of facial and tongue muscles and the anatomic development of palate and mouth. This ACTIVE action is due to the sum of the features of the teat (fig. 1, 2, 3). 1. 1. Fig. 1: tiny ridges on the teat reproduce the natural furrows on the palate. The groove and angled shape encourage the natural positioning of the tongue inside the mouth and its natural movement. 2a. 2. Fig. 2: the teat shape evenly distributes the pressure of the tongue against the palate, also laterally, favoring correct development over time. 3. 3. Fig. 3: : the extremely soft, narrow base makes it easier for baby to close his mouth and reduces the risk of misaligned dental arches. DEVELOPED WITH LEADING ORTHODONTISTS soothers are rigorously Made in Italy and they come in natural latex or soft silicone. LATEX soft natural latex rubber, supple and resistant for a natural soothing feeling. transparent and hygienic silicone, tasteless and odourless, does not deform over time. The teat comes in three different sizes to ensure that the soother is just the right size for the baby’s mouth. What kind of are you? It is made from latex rubber or silicone, it is extra-soft and does not bother the baby even when he is sleeping. The ergonomic shield has special irritation-proof slots to allow the air to circulate, and a practical ring with cute decorations. It comes in a variety of colours and patterns, including a version that glows in the dark. Both and come in latex and silicone. THE CORRECT USE OF THE SOOTHER …some precautions • Do not use with sweet substances since they may cause tooth decay. • Limit the time of daily use until breastfeeding is well under way and in the event of a momentary decrease of the production of milk. • Do not offer the soother whenever the baby cries because crying often indicates a desire to communicate with parents. • It is recommended to reduce the use of the soother in cases of recurring medium otitis and evident dental malocclusions. • The use of dummies should be gradually reduced from 24 months and given up completely by 36 months. 00 091006 290 020 97341.Z2.1 Artsana S.p.A.
