I hope everyone survived T. S. Irene's. We didn't get activated by Androscoggin EMA. The Red Cross did not open any shelters this time. This is a good time to remind everyone to listen to our Repeater 146.61 and if it's not working, use 146.46 simplex. also, get on our weekly ARES/RACES net on Thursday at 1900 on 146.61. The big event for August was the Beach to Beacon 10k Race. Overall, the support for the medical group when well. But, there is room for improvement dealing with the gator's communication. We have make recommendations to them and we will see how they response. We visited Androscoggin EMA and did some antenna work, but more needs to be done. Start thinking about our two major events. First, is the annual SET on OCT 8, a 4 to 5 hours duration most of you will operate from home with either VHF or HF. So check your equipment and prepare. More details to come. Second is the Dempsey Challenge on Oct 9, 2011, if you have not volunteer than do it soon. I have both Rest Stops and SAG's positions. 2011 Dempsey Challenge October 8 th & 9 th Lewiston ME http://dempseychallenge.org/ Hams will be providing radio support only on Sunday 9th Only for the Bike Treks Ham Contact: Ivan N1OXA [email protected] Volunteer Page: http://www.dempseychallenge.org/volunteer-2 Press "Volunteer" Button to go to https://www.kintera.org/faf/volunteerRegNew/volunteerSelection.asp?ievent=435102 At the kintera.org site Check the "Ham Operator" ACORN Page 3 of 6 Secretary's Report by Dick N1NYW A meeting of the Androscoggin Amateur Radio Club was held Wednesday August 3, 2011 at the Lepage Conference center in Lewiston Maine. In attendance: w1oks, w1skp, n1jd, we1u, wa1eoj, kb1rsd, kb1doi, w1scm and son Charles, n1svb, n1kat, n1oxa, n1nyw, and late arrivals w1ltx, kb1qhr, k1wtx, and n1dot. The meeting was called to order at 7 PM by president Bill Woodhead. David we1u made a motion to approve the Secretarys report that was seconded by Andy kb1doi. Vote: approved. Ivan read the Treasurers report which Andy kb1doi moved to accept with a second from David we1u. Ivan explained the hams participation in the Beach to Beacon race on August 6. The July edition of the ACORN explained about the possible purchase of a simplex repeater for the club. David we1u made a motion to purchase the repeater and associated hardware, Brian kb1obd seconded the motion. Vote: approved. It was decided that there was no immediate need for a tracker unit so it ’s purchase will be postponed until there is a need. We will talk more about this at next months meeting. David we1u passed out information about the Maine CERT Jamboree that takes place October 10 and 11. If you are interested contact Androscoggin EMA before August 26, 2011. Earle n1svb made a motion to adjourn and David we1u seconded the motion. Vote: approved at 7:18 PM. After the meeting there was a discussion about the WRTC 24 hour Olympic style competion in 2014 to make as many contacts as possible from New England. Bill is lobbying to hold the meeting at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station. Our scheduled speaker was not able to join us for a talk about satellite communications. Get a calculator and give it a try. The Problem I have run into is making sure to correctly name your files so, later, in UI-View, you know what map you really have without searching & searching your map files. (Maybe I got too many maps ?) Microsoft's Streets & Trips DVD is required for this method. While it is not an automated process, it is easy to create static maps from S&T to use in UI-View. Open S&T and zoom in to the map that you want to capture. Position it so that there is a "landmark" near two corners, usually the top left and bottom right corners. If there isn't a landmark near one of the corners, you could create a "push-pin" for one of the points. Click on "File - Save as Web Page" and save it somewhere on your hard drive. Then use the "location sensor" (tools - location sensor) and jot down the coordinates for the two calibration points. Convert the format to "degrees, minutes, decimal of a minute." This is an easy task. Just take the decimal portion of a degrees to minutes by multiplying it by 60... e.g. 48.8158N would be 48° + (.8158 * 60)' = 48° 48.95' N. Once you have the lat / long converted to the right format, go to the folder that you saved the map in and rename it if desired. Then move or copy it to the MAPS folder below where you have UI-View installed. Finally, drag it from there to the normal map view in UI-View. NOTE: FOR EVERY MAP, YOU WILL HAVE TWO FILES. “yourmapname .gif” “yourmapname.INF” When prompted to calibrate it, use the "two point" method of calibrating unless the two points happen to be right in the corners of the map. Don't forget that there is a "dot" between the degrees and the minutes when entering the coordinates in UI-View. This is just a separator. It isn't a decimal. Using the example from above, it would be entered like 48.48.95N. As with everything in UI-View, hit F1 for help in doing this step. Click on OK and you are done. But will it work with other online maps ? As long as you can get two opposite corners (upper left, lower right) located, and “Save as Web Page”, why not ? This will require some experimentation. (another project looms in my future) As for copyright issues...as long as it's for “Educational purposes” I do not think Microsoft, or any other map publisher won't be knocking on your door. The web page link, http://www.ui-view.org/uiview32/mapsoftware.shtml discusses a few ways to get maps into UI-VIEW. If this doesn't work for, ie..you don't have a copy of “Streets & Trips 2007”, (that's what I used), see if any of them work.
