Adobe Reader Navigation Tips Courtesy of Independent Home Inspections and Consulting All rights reserved - © Copyright 2009 Eric Batke Navigating through a large document can be cumbersome. Presented are some helpful navigation tips that can facilitate your usage of these types of files. Also, a number of the features below and additional navigation options may be setup in the toolbar. Right click in an empty space on the toolbar, then click on the appropriate option in the pop-up menu and then click on the tool options you want to add to your toolbar. Navigating using the mouse Continuous Scrolling Using the mouse wheel - If your mouse has a wheel, place the mouse pointer in the body of the text and rotate the wheel up or down to scroll line by line up and down trough the text. Using the scrollbar - Click on the up or down arrow at the top or bottom of the scroll bar on the right to scroll line by line up or down through the text. Or Click, hold and drag the scroll bar button up or down to scroll continuously up or down through the text. Page Scrolling Using the paging icon tools in the toolbar - Click on the blue up or down arrow icons in the toolbar along the top to page up or down trough the text. Display is not continuous and only a portion of the documents page is displayed. Jump back or forward to a previously viewed page Using the “Previous View” or “Next View” icon tool in the toolbar - Click on the blue left or right pointing arrow icon in the toolbar along the top to jump back or forward to the previously viewed pages. This icon tool only becomes active when a previous view condition exists. Each click will continue to take you back or forward to each paged previously viewed in reverse order. Using the pop-up menu - Place the mouse pointer in the body of the document and right click the mouse button. Click on the “Previous View” or “Next View” menu item displayed. Repeated “Previous View” or “Next View” menu clicks will continue to take you back or forward to each previously viewed paged in reverse order until there are no more. Jump to a page Using the Navigation Panel - Click on the “Pages” icon tool (first icon) in the Navigation Panel on the left side of the document display. Now click on the desired page thumbnail displayed to go to that page. Adobe Reader 6 and 7 will have a “Pages” tab instead of an icon tool. Jump to a link If the pointer icon tool changes to a hand with a pointing finger when you mouse over an item, click to jump to the page or document associated with the link. Navigating using the keyboard Page Scrolling “Page Down” key. Scrolls down one screen view at a time. Display is continuous and no text is skipped. “Page Up” key. Scrolls up one screen view at a time. Display is continuous and no text is skipped. Jump to a page number “Shift” + “Ctrl” + “N”. Enter the page number in the pop-up display, and then click the “OK” button. Jump back or forward to a previously viewed page “Alt” + right or left arrow keys. Each press of the “Right Arrow” or “Left Arrow” key while holding the “Alt” key will continue to take you back or forward to each previously viewed paged in reverse order until there are no more. Jump to first page or last page in the document “Ctrl” + “Home” key to jump to the first page and “Ctrl” + “End” key to jump to the last page.
