MINIATURE INSTRUMENT CONDENSER MICROPHONE
F-90 CONDENSER MIC
overview The F-90 is a pre-polarized condenser microphone designed for use with drums, percussion, and instruments in the areas of live sound and live broadcast applications. With a smooth uniform response over a frequency range of 50 Hz –18 kHz, the F-90 is lightweight, compact, and extremely easy to use. The microphone is designed with an integral clamping system making it simple to attach to the rims of drums, percussion instruments, and a variety of other instruments such as sax, trumpet, and trombone. The F-90 has a cardioid pick-up pattern and is capable of handling sound pressure levels up to 135 dB. The flexible gooseneck, along with the 90-degree angle of the microphone head, puts the microphone in the proper position for placement directly over the sound source. Any final adjustments can be made by simply twisting or bending the gooseneck into the desired position. The F-90 is highly sensitive and will pick up the warmth and clarity of instruments without boominess. The F-90 operates on phantom power of 9-52 volts and is supplied with a phantom power adapter, integral clamp, cable, windscreen, and carrying pouch.

Polar Chart The frequency response chart (above) and the polar patterns represent a typical production run for this microphone.
Miking more than one drum with one mic: The F-90 has a wide cardioid pick-up pattern, which means that it is possible to use the mic to pick up multiple drums. For example: the mic could be placed between the snare and the high hat, effectively miking both instruments. The same could be done for two rack toms. Under Cymbals: Use the F-90 to get into extremely tight spaces where dynamic microphones (like our D series) are too big. Miking the underside of a ride cymbal from the rim of a floor tom is simple and space efficient due to the vast adjustability of the F-90. Too little rim: In cases where the rim height is too short for the clamp of the F-90, the innermost boot can be removed which will shorten the clamp. This is especially helpful if the drumhead is worn out, causing the rim to sit lower.

Power Supply: The 9-52 volt phantom power adapter provided with the F-90 is a proprietary power supply. If you should lose your power supply, please contact Audix to order a replacement. (APS-90) Live Sound: Drums: The F-90 is designed to clip on the rim of a drum, to a drum suspension system, and on some types of stands. The position of the F-90 should be 2-3” off the drum head. It is not necessary or desirable to place the microphone too close to the drumhead.

Operation and Maintenance: Condenser microphones as a general rule are much more sensitive and reactive than dynamic microphones and should be handled with care. Avoid extreme temperatures wherever possible. Moisture and high humidity can adversely effect the performance of the microphone and cause permanent damage. For outdoor use consider using the supplied outer foam windscreen to help reduce wind noise or popping. When not in use, please store your mic in the pouch provided at room temperature.
—1000 Hz Measurements (in Millimeters)
Goodie Table: The F-90 can be placed on a cymbal stand over the table, or directly to a 9.5mm multi rod on the table. Percussion: The F-90’s integral clamp fits most standard (butcher-block) timbale and conga rims, but a separate stand may be needed to accommodate curved conga/bongo rims. Brass: The F-90 can be used successfully for saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. Simply attach the clamp to the bottom part of the bell so that the mic is pointing in the direction of the bell. Do not try to force the mic inside the bell as the mic is designed to sound best if it is slightly off axis from the source. In the case of trumpet, this is ideal because the player can use a mute without having to remove the microphone.
WARNING: The F-90 requires 9-52 Volts of phantom power to fully charge the element. For this reason, DO NOT PLUG OR UNPLUG THE MICROPHONE INTO OR OUT OF THE PA SYSTEM UNLESS THE VOLUME OF THE SYSTEM IS TURNED DOWN. Failure to do so may result in a loud “popping” noise sensation which could seriously damage the speakers in the PA system. Power requirements are 9-52 Volts Phantom Power. Most current mixing boards are equipped with phantom power, however, if phantom power is not available please use the Audix APS-2 power supply to interface between the microphone and the mixing board.

OUTPUT: The F-90 output is balanced across Pin 2 (positive) with respect to Pin 3. The shield is connected to Pin 1. It is recommended to use a high quality microphone cable with 3 pin XLR connectors.
