Together with a synopsis of how they extinguish a fire, environmental impact, toxicity and other important factors. These include pressure relief damping, Integrity testing and post discharge extract. Recent History Of Extinguishing Agents Up to the late 1980’s and early 1990’s Halon 1301, 1211 and carbon dioxide were the extinguishing agents of choice. They were highly effective and relatively cost effective, employed for decades worldwide. Halons used for fire fighting were known to have a high ozone depleting potential and as such their use for the majority of cases was banned under the Montreal Protocol Agreement Following the ban a new range of extinguishing agents was introduced, some of these are outlined on the following pages. Aspect Fire Solutions Capabilities At Aspect Fire Solutions we are able to supply design and install a wide range of extinguishing products. We can provide help and guidance upon the suitability of an extinguishing agent for your particular risk. Thereby allowing you to make an informed choice, about which system best suits your needs. We are able to provide not only the extinguishing system; we can also supply and install pressure relief dampers, extraction systems, air sampling and fire alarm systems. It is suitable for the protection of most enclosed areas. Approved for use in normally occupied areas where personnel safety is paramount. It extinguishes the fire largely through heat absorption and chemical reaction at the flame front. Carbon Dioxide CO2 FM-200 is electrically non-conductive and non-corrosive, additionally it leaves no oily residue or deposits. Overview It is stored under pressure as a liquid in cylinders and only requires a small storage “footprint” the FM-200 Is discharged through a piping network into the protected area. When complimented with a post discharge extract system, clean up time is kept to a minimum. Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems Features • • • • • • • Colourless, odourless, gaseous fire protection Safe for use in occupied areas Suitable for critical risk areas Minimal storage area required Zero ozone depleting potential Approved for use on class A&B fires Proven in tens of thousands of installations worldwide Carbon Dioxide the original ‘clean’ agent, it has been utilised in a wide variety of applications to fight fires for over 50 years. Carbon Dioxide produces no chemical residues or decomposition products, therefore making it ideal to use in the food industry and industries where contamination of a process or product is not an option. It is generally used in areas that are designated as “un-occupied”, as at the design concentrations used for fire suppression carbon dioxide can be hazardous to people. It has the advantage over other extinguishing gases that in can be used as a “total flood” to protect areas such as generator rooms, switch rooms which have solid walls, roof & floors. Also it can be also used as “local application” where it can be discharged directly on to a high risk area of a production line such as a printing press, deep fat fryer for example and envelope the protected area in Carbon dioxide to extinguish a fire. The principles are based upon over 120 years of fire protection experience. The L–FOG system has been designed to retain all of the proven performance of traditional water based systems, while giving the efficiency of water mist technology. Water mist droplets of micron sizes produce a large surface area for heat absorption. Once in contact with hot bodies and gases, these droplets turn to vapour absorbing a large quantity of heat. The low nozzle pressures and extremely efficient nozzle design allow the L–FOG to be installed utilising copper pipe work or UPVC “Blazemaster” type system. The water in its vapour state occupies 1600 times more volume than as a liquid and displaces an equivalent volume of oxygen, thus creating a smothering effect. The mist cloud generated in the enclosure absorbs large quantities of radiated heat. high pressure water mist AQUAFOG high pressure water mist systems can be used in a wide variety of applications, where gas suppression or traditional sprinklers are not suitable or practical. AQUAFOG fire extinguishing system uses water at pressures of typically 100 BAR, distributed via stainless steel pipe work to specially designed water mist spray heads. The small water droplets create a large effective cooling surface area. AQUAFOG water mist systems optimise the quantity of water used trough the distribution of very small droplets to achieve maximum cooling effect. High Pressure Water Water Mist (HPWM) Systems water mist systems Due to the low water consumption of the L–FOG nozzles considerably smaller pumps and tanks can be used than associated with traditional sprinkler systems. Smothering Is not a replacement for sprinkler systems, it has at present no prescriptive standards, although there is criteria available for water mist engineering and definitive fire testing and recognised suitability in many applications. How does it work? AQUAFOG Features: AQUAFOG suppresses or extinguishes a fire in the following ways: • • • • • • • Cooling Water mist droplets of micron sizes produce a large surface area for heat absorption. Once in contact with hot bodies and gases, these droplets turn to vapour absorbing a large quantity of heat, equivalent to 540 calories per gram. Smothering The water in its vapour state occupies 1600 times more volume than as a liquid and displaces an equivalent volume of oxygen, thus creating a smothering effect. The mist cloud generated in the enclosure absorbs large quantities of radiated heat. Drastic reduction of temperature Minimal water damage Non–toxic Suitable for local application and total flood systems Environmentally friendly No by products Easy to re-fill How it works L–FOG Is usually installed utilising frangible bulb nozzles, upon reaching a prescribed temperature the bulb will fracture causing a pressure drop in the system, this will start the pump to start. The L–FOG system fights the fire in the following ways. AQUAFOG Applications systems can be used in an extremely wide variety of fire protection applications such as:• • • • Diesel generators Food processing, fat fryers Data centres Fuel fires AQUAFOG high pressure water mist systems HPWM consist of high pressure pumps and storage tanks or cylinders of water and pressurised nitrogen cylinders to discharge the water. The installation is carried out utilising small bore stainless steel pipe work and high pressure discharge nozzles. AQUAFOG systems can be configured utilising “open nozzles” operated via an electrical detection system with all nozzles operating simultaneously. Features • Reduced pump size, water tank, reduced water requirement, smaller pipe work size over traditional sprinkler systems • Reduced cost over traditional systems • Less water required, faster clean up. • Definitive fire testing and recognised suitability in many areas Applications • • • • Traditional OH1 classification systems Hotels Care homes HMO’S Alternatively AQUAFOG systems can be configured utilising closed nozzles with frangible bulbs which will fracture and discharge when the operating temperature is reached. Aspect Fire Solutions are approved to Supply, install & maintain the prestigious R-102 kitchen fire suppression systems. One of the most important components of any fire suppression system. Suppression Systems At Aspect Fire Solutions we include integrity testing with all the systems we design and install. An integrity test is necessary to ensure that the protected area is able to satisfactorily hold a sufficient quantity of the extinguishing agent in order to maintain a the minimum level of agent in order to suppress a fire for a minimum of 10 minutes. This is achieved by sealing and making good the room structure with suitable fire resistant building and sealing products. Imagine if you lost your business through fire? In todays commercial kitchens, higher temperature cooking oils, high-efficiency, slow-cooling appliances such as deep fat fryers have combined to make fire suppression more challenging than ever. But the fact remains: the need to protect people and property from fire is crucial. And the system more food service operations trust to do this? Imagine having installed a fire suppression system and it does not function correctly because the room was not adequately sealed and the suppression agent leaked out! Before a fire could be extinguished. We can carry out Integrity testing on a wide range of suppression systems and can carry out annual integrity testing of a wide range of manufacturers systems. We can provide pressure relief dampers if required and can offer an installation service. We can offer a room sealing service and guarantee a pass !! The effectiveness of a gaseous fire suppression system can only by guaranteed by regular ongoing maintenance of that facility. Official ANSUL UK Distributor How it Works The R-102 system uses tried and tested fusible link technology to quickly detect a fire. Simultaneously we can interface with any gas valve/electrical supply to the equipment the fire is detected on. The R-102 suppression agent is discharged onto the fire, forming a solid layer of foam, this instantly cuts of the oxygen supply to the fire suppressing it within 30 seconds and cooling it. People are protected and surrounding damage is minimised. The kitchen can be cleaned up immediately and the restaurant can resume normal operations in the shortest possible time. We offer a 24/7 call out and maintenance facility for R-102 Systems to keep your system in optimum working order and to keep your business running. As part of an annual program of system maintenance, integrity testing of the protected enclosure must be undertaken to ensure that, on discharge, the extinguishing agent achieves the correct concentration at the necessary height for the minimum required retention time. ISO 14520 states that an enclosure protected by a gaseous extinguishing system must be integrity tested on an annual basis or when changes are made to the enclosure boundary such as new cable penetrations. • Ability to test all the most popular systems - FM-200, NOVEC, INERGEN, CO2, ARGONITE • Room sealing service available if required, to a guaranteed pass! • Pressure relief dampers supplied and fitted • Electrical and mechanical servicing, liquid level testing, stretch testing, re-filling service available. • Nationwide coverage ANSUL R-102 fire suppression systems discharge ANSULEX liquid fire suppressant, quickly knocking down flames and cooling hot surfaces. We use worldwide recognised panels and sensor equipment. The dampers in their normal state remain closed, when a pressure generally greater than 100 pascals is exerted upon the they open to release the pressure within the enclosure and close as the discharge completes and the room pressure drops. Our design staff and engineers are trained to the latest British Standards and their implementation. At Aspect Fire Solutions we can supply a wide range of dampers and offer an installation service should you require. You have a room where the atmosphere is full of smoke and potential decomposition products from the extinguishing agent. Before you can allow personnel back into the area, all contaminants need to be vented to the outside atmosphere. Air Sampling System Using the latest software design packages we can custom design your system to produce the optimum in air sampling systems. How Do they Work Imagine this scenario - A fire has occurred within a computer or communications room. The gas suppression system has operated and extinguished the fire, you want your operation up and running as soon as possible? In addition to fire suppression systems we are able to provide a full range of fire alarm systems and products this includes. We are approved installers for the VESDA range of systems, from a simple single module system, to a fully networked multi area system with “touch screen graphics”. When any gaseous extinguishing system is discharged into an enclosure a positive pressure (and in some cases a negative pressure also!) is created on the room. This can result in severe structural damage to the room. This is why it is essential to install correctly sized pressure relief dampers (PRD) specific for the type of gas being employed and the type of structure the PRD is being installed within. Post Discharge Extraction Systems Integrated Systems We are able to design, install and commission a full extract system we can even include pressure relief damping within the extract system. Service, Maintenance and Aftercare of Systems Different types of extract systems are required for the differing gases as the characteristics of halo carbon agents and Inert agents are very different. We are able to provide service and maintenance of all our systems that we install. We also carry out maintenance of other suppliers equipment. • Extract systems designed and installed for all major extinguishing gases FM-200, INERGEN, NOVEC, ARGONITE, INERTSAFE300 • Pressure relief dampers can be included • Nationwide service We have a dedicated 24/7 service desk to schedule and deal with maintenance issues throughout the working day. For all our maintenance customers we also have a 24/7 response service for all your call out requirements.
