Centralized optical cabling structures for "Fiber to the Office" or "Fiber to the Desk" are possible by conversion of the standardized twisted-pair interface (100BASE-TX). Distances up to 40 km The network can be extended over and above the "building area" (300 m) to cover distances of up to 40 km ("campus area"). Singlemode and multimode fibers All components support both singlemode and multimode optical fibers and also the optical connector systems ´SC´ and ´ST´ above the requirements of the standards – a major advantage with respect to "future" technologies. Note: singlemode = SM 9/125 µm, multimode = GI 50/125µm and 62.5/125 µm Alcatel Fiber Con Key components in the Alcatel product range are the Fiber Con units. These convert switched full-duplex twisted-pair ports (100BASE-TX) bidirectionally into optical fiber ports (100BASE-FX). Without modification of the software, this now makes universal and extremely flexible and powerful collapsed backbone structures possible in optical data networks. It also opens up a wide range of migration possibilities, permitting step-by-step introduction of optical fibers into the network, regardless of whether "Fiber to the Office" or "Fiber to the Desk" is used. The growing market presence of switches, routers and bridges with standard twisted-pair ports clearly demonstrates how economical the Fiber Con solution is. Existing units can be connected directly via TP ports (RJ45) and can be used just as in the past, without any further hardware replacement and independent of the manufacturer. The built-in link signal connection ensures that any faults are passed on to the network management. Versions Many different versions, such as 6-port and 1-port variants, and easily fitted installation systems are available. The terminal side of the Fiber Con product range is rounded off by desktop units and cable duct modules. Full-duplex operation and protocol transparency are guaranteed, just as for all Fiber Con components. In full-duplex mode, data can be transmitted over distances of up to 2000 m (optionally 40 km). OPTICAL FIBER NETWORK COMPONENTS Fiber Con 600 ———————————————————————————————————————————————————— Fiber Con 600 is an advantageous multi-port media converter. Used in central network nodes in the building or campus area, it permits simple extension of a network withoptical fibers, without any problems in the adaptation of the existing software or hardware. The unit can be used directly as a patch panel in 19" rack technology. Fiber Con 100 Desk ———————————————————————————————————————————————— Fiber Con 100 Desk is a single-port version in a desk-top case which can be used either as a network node or as a terminal port in the office. The built-in power supply unit avoids the problems often related with external, plug-type power supply units and similar devices. The pin assignments of the twisted-pair socket can be modified for the direct connection of either switches or terminals. No special connection cables are needed, regardless of whether it is used as a terminal port in an office or as an extension for a switch port. Fiber Con 100 ——————————————————————————————————————————————————— Fiber Con 100 is a module for installation in standard wall boxes. Functionally, it is identical to the "Desk" version. For connection of terminals, the module can be installed in all commonly used cabling systems such as wall and breastwork ducts. The safe guidance and laying of the optical fibers in cable ducts and twisted-pair terminal sockets emphasize the suitability of this system for use in office and industrial environments. Fiber Con 100 PC —————————————————————————————————————— Fiber Con 100 PC modules are used in "fiber to the desk" (FTTD) applications. These modules, in the form of plug-in cards for PCs, provide optimum conditions for switching and multimedia applications. Installation is unaffected by the type of bus and consists purely of mechanical insertion and connection of the supply voltage within the PC by means of a special adapter provided with the module. The Fiber Con 100 PC card is connected via an external twisted-pair cable to a Fast Ethernet card (of any make) in the PC. OPTICAL FIBER NETWORK COMPONENTS Optical fibers and switching technology in the work place sector These permit the extension of existing or planned cable links without having to worry about the typical length restrictions of Fast Ethernet networks. The permissible segment distance of up to 100 m (Cat. 5) or 412 m (optical fibers) is soon reached in the case of direct terminal connection. Network planning and expansion are made unnecessarily complicated by the need for additional intermediate stages (horizontal distributors, etc.). The Alcatel switch family is the ideal solution here. Switch functions such as netload separation for the network segments and simple handling without the need for software configuration show how useful these units are in the enduser area. Copper Switch 10/100 Desk ————————————————————————————————————————— The Copper Switch 10/100 multiplies the connection capacity of a data connection (100BASE-TX) by four, i.e. your single RJ45 terminal connection (100BASE-TX) becomes a link for up to four independent terminals. Switchable for 10/100 Mbps.When used together with the Fiber Con 100 media converter, this permits segment lengths of up to 2000 m (optionally 40 km) in full-duplex transmission mode (FDX).The Copper Switch 100 is thus the final element in the low-cost "fiber to the office" (FTTO) solution in combination with Fiber Con. Fiber Switch 10/100 Desk ——————————————————————————————————————————— The Fiber Switch 100 is also intended for the end-user area. It combines the optical fibers (FX), switch functions and four 10/100 Mbps terminal ports in one unit. Its full-duplex transmission mode and easy handling provide a low-cost and high-performance alternative to conventional "fiber to the desk" (FTTD) solutions.There is no expensive and fault-prone optical cabling to the user terminals and it is not necessary to upgrade the PCs with "optical network cards" or to modify their software. Optical Fiber and Connection Sharing Fiber Share 100 —————————————————————————————————————————————————— The Fiber Share 100 cable duct module allows multiple users (up to 4) to benefit from one optical fiber connection in Fast Ethernet networks according to IEEE 802.3u 100BASE-FX.
