1-800-735-9131 www.wandercontrol.com ALPHA WATCH  II+ SYSTEM OPERATIONS OPERATIONS OVERVIEW CONGRATULATIONS, you have just purchased the ALPHA WATCH  II+, one of the most advanced and cost effective wander control systems available today. The following explains a few of the features and benefits of the ALPHA WATCH  II+ equipment. The ALPHA WATCH  II+ is a wandering resident security system designed to protect selected doors, hallways, or elevators. The system is also capable of electro magnetically securing doors if this option is purchased. Wanderers wear a small RF tag, on the wrist or ankle. This tag is rugged and waterproof to allow bathing without removing the tag. When one or more wanderers approach a protected area, the system identifies the wanderer in that area and displays the tag identification number on the control unit. If the system is an "alarming only” system, a local alarm will sound to alert your staff if the door is opened while the tag is detected by the control unit. With a "securing" system the electromagnetic lock engages to hold the door secure until the area is clear. An escort function is available at each protected area to allow a tagged wanderer to be escorted through the protected area without the system securing or alarming. The system will automatically reactivate after the door is closed, or after the designated time period, which ever comes first. For additional security the ALPHA WATCH  II+ is capable of non-selective security. In this mode of operation the system continuously engages the magnetic restraint (if purchased). If the door is opened without activating the escort code the alarm will be activated. With the "securing" system the electromagnetic lock will remain engaged until the non-selective perimeter mode is disabled, or the escort code is entered. MOUNTING AND WIRING OF ALPHA WATCH II+™ EQUIPMENT The mounting and wiring of equipment should be as follows: (Also refer to the system layout and connection diagrams for further assistance) Control Unit The control unit should be mounted close to the protected door with the display at approximately 4 to 4 ½ feet above the floor or at a comfortable working and viewing height for the employees. Receive Antenna Options Installation Of Alpha WatchTM II Antenna’s Drop ceiling installations: 1.Select a tile to set the antenna on. This tile should be as close to the center of the door as possible. Make sure that there is no metal within several inches of the antenna. A distance of one (1) to three (3) feet from the door should provide a good detection zone (see Fig. 1). 2.The antenna should be held to the tile by some type on non-metallic material. Double sided foam tape works well as do many office adhesives. 3.Wire antenna as per the “Wiring Of Antennas” instructions located at the end of this document. Fig. 1 Dry Walled or Plastered Ceilings: 1.A “Back Fed” ceiling mount antenna is equipped with mounting holes that can be used to attach the antenna to a “PLASTIC” single gang electrical box. Do not use a metal electrical box for mounting; the metal will interfere with the reception of the antenna. Mount the plastic electrical box in the ceiling above the door to be protected. The best location for the box is about one (1) to three (3) feet away, and centered in front of the door. The box should be situated so that the antenna will extend lengthwise across the front of the door. 2.Open the antenna at the end by removing the two plastic screws and pulling off the end cap. Once the end cap is removed you may slide the front of the antenna off so that you can get to the mounting holes. 3.Feed one end of a length of coax cable into the back of the plastic electrical box and connect it to the antenna. 4.Mount the antenna to the plastic box using any 6-32 X ½" screws available. 5.Close up the antenna by sliding the front cover back on and attaching the end cap with the two “PLASTIC” screws. 6.For AW2+ Finish wiring the antenna by going to step 2 of the “Wiring Of Antennas” instructions located at the end of this document. Wall Mount Antenna: The “Wall Mount Antenna” is available with the coax cable connector coming out the top or the back of the antenna (depending on which one is purchased). The “Top Fed Antenna” may be mounted to the wall using any standard mounting hardware. The “Back Fed Antenna” is mounted to a “PLASTIC” single gang electrical box. The “Back Fed Antenna” allows the coax cable to be routed inside of a drywall constructed wall whereas the “Top Fed Antenna” is intended to be mounted to brick, block, or any wall that will not allow easy routing of the coax cable within the wall itself. Basic mounting instructions are as follows: End Fed Antenna 1.Open the antenna at the end by removing the two plastic screws and pulling off the end cap. Once the end cap is removed you may slide the front of the antenna off so that you can get to the mounting holes. 2.Mount the antenna next to the door to be protected at least 18" above the floor and opposite the hinged side of the door if possible. If you are protecting a double door with a wall mount antenna you may mount the box on either side of the door but preferably on the side that you believe will have the most traffic. Note: If you need to have a fairly tight detection area on a double door we would recommend that you purchase a second antenna so that both sides of the door are covered without having to turn up the sensitivity of a single antenna to the point where you are picking up tags in nearby rooms. 3.Close up the antenna by sliding the front cover back on and attaching the end cap with the two “PLASTIC” screws. 4.Wire the antenna using the “Wiring Of Antennas” instructions located at the end of this document. Plastic Wire Mold way is used to cover the coax cable. Wiring Of Antennas: 1.Connect one piece of coax cable to the antenna via the F-Connector that is located either on the back or side of the antenna (depending on option purchased). Note: If you are using an Alpha II controller rather than an Alpha II+ skip to step 4. 2.Connect the other end of this piece of coax to “OUT” of the Attenuator (see Fig. 2). 3.Take the second piece of coax cable and connect it to the “IN” of the Attenuator. 4.Take the free end of coax cable and connect it to J1 of the Alpha II or (II+) control unit. Fig. 2 Note: Make sure there are no RF Tags anywhere in the area when setting the range of the system. Check the ID bit on the LCD display + make sure it is the ID bit of the tag you are working with. To adjust the range of the antenna, place a tag within the area that you would like detected and adjust the control on the attenuator until the AWII+ picks up the tag. Turn down the sensitivity of the attenuator so that the control unit only picks up a tag in the desired area. Try taking the tag fifteen (15) to twenty (20) feet away from the protected area and then slowly walking the tag closer to the door to see where the tag is detected. Keep in mind that the range will vary depending on the angle that the tag approaches the door. Door Contacts - mount the door switch to the frame above the door. - mount the door contact magnet to the top of the door. - make sure there is no more than an 1/8" gap between the switch and the contact magnet - follow Alpha Watch II connection diagram for wiring information. The options for the Alpha Watch II+ ™ should be mounted as follows: REMOTE ESCORTS - mount on the exterior side of the door, on the wall within 3 feet of the door - wire to J3 pin 3 and J3 pin 4 on control unit, polarity is not important. ALERT PANEL - Usually mounted at Nursing Station. - Needs 110V Power to plug in Power Supply CONNECTIONS FOR ALERT PANELS ALERT PANEL HOOKUP - The following is the connection diagram for the Alert 6. Each of the controllers (Alpha Watch™ units) must have a wire run from them to the alert panel. (Be sure to document the Unit # and corresponding door.) They are then wired to the alert panel as follows below. J1 (Unit 1 +, -) - input of Unit #1 L.E.D. (Unit 2 +, -) - input of Unit #2 L.E.D. (Unit 3 +, -) - input of Unit #3 L.E.D. J2 (Unit 4 +, -) - input of Unit #4 L.E.D. (Unit 5 +, -) - input of Unit #5 L.E.D. (Unit 6 +, -) - input of Unit #6 L.E.D. J3 - Power (+) - 12VDC positive input (-) - 12VDC negative input J4 - Alarm Out (1) - Positive input (2) - negative output Batt-1 Battery backup maintains memory in the Alpha Watch II+ System for at least one hour of operation in the event of a power failure. Battery recharges during normal operation of system. This also helps to protect the Alpha Watch system from Power Spikes & Brown Outs that could damage system. ALPHA WATCH II+™ HARDWARE SET-UP CAUTION: THE CONTROL UNIT MUST BE POWERED DOWN TO PERFORM ANY HARDWARE MODIFICATIONS. ESCORT TIME - The escort function allows the controlled door to be opened by entering the appropriate escort code. Jumpers 9, 10, and 11 control the length of time in which entry through the door is permitted. The factory setting will allow for 25 seconds from the time the escort code is entered. It is usually better to use a time greater than you think you will need. DETECT TIME - There are now 4 different detect delay times available. The detect time is the time that the Alpha II maintains a detect signal after a tag is no longer communicating with the system. The detect times are selected using JP7 and JP8, the times are as follows: JP7 Off Off On On JP8 Off On Off On TIME 10 seconds(default time) 1 second (used for trouble shooting only) 20 seconds 40 seconds CONTROL UNIT ADDRESSING - The factory default address for the control unit is set for 1. In a system with more than one control unit, each panel will require a unique address if the units are going to be tied to a computer. Jumpers 1 through 5 specify an address number from 0-31. Keep in mind that you will loose any software changes if the power goes out without a battery backup installed. The following section describes each of the commands: Note: remember that during all the commands the “#” key equals “yes” and the “*” key equals a “no”. 9002 - Change Escort Code (wander control mode) This function changes the default escort code of “217" to any one to 5 digit code desired. Avoid using codes that are similar to the command codes “90??”. This change is only effective while the system is in its default wander control mode, if the system is placed in perimeter mode that code would need to be changes as well (see 9008). Example: to program a new escort code of “4312" enter the following: “9002#4312# 9003 - Change Alarm Pattern (wander control mode) The default alarm sound is a steady tone, you may select one of nine other sounds to help differentiate the control unit from other audible devices that you may have in the local area. All of the options are a sequence of on and off times that produce a different sound pattern. This feature is very useful at nighttime when there should be no traffic at the door. 9007 - Exit Perimeter Mode This command takes you out of perimeter mode and places you back into wander control mode. 9008 -Change Perimeter Escort Code This function changes the default perimeter escort code of “217" to any one to 5 digit code desired. Avoid using codes that are similar to the command codes “90??”. This change is only effective while the system is in perimeter mode while in wander control mode, use the 9002 command. Example: to program a new perimeter escort code of “4312" enter the following: “9008#4312# 9010 - Change Perimeter Alarm Pattern The default alarm sound is pattern #1, you may select one of nine other sounds to help differentiate the control unit from other audible devices that you may have in the local area. The time is primarily used if the system is set up to automatically go into perimeter mode at a certain time of day. Example: to change the time to 9:15 PM (21:15) you would enter the following: “9012#2115#” 9013 - Set Perimeter On Time This is the time that the control unit would automatically enter perimeter mode. Example: to enter the perimeter mode every night at 7:00 PM you would enter the following: “9013#1900#” 9014- Set Perimeter Off Time This is the time that the control unit would automatically exit the perimeter mode and return to wander control mode. Example: to exit perimeter mode at 6:00 AM every morning enter the following: “9014#0600#” 9017- Display Perimeter Times To display the on and off time for the perimeter mode simply enter 9017 9022 - Display Set-Up Code This function will show you the status of all the jumpers selected on the control board. A “0" means that a jumper is not present and a “1" means that a jumper is active. The display shows all jumpers status in order starting with JP1 9023 - Display Software Version This command simply displays the version of software installed in your control unit. 9099 - RESET If you use this command all entered data will return to the ‘power on’ defaults. Alpha Watch  Tag Program Alpha Watch II+ resident tags are encased in a watertight plastic housing. As a result, normal and therapeutic bathing procedures do not damage the tag. Each transponder is assigned a unique identification number during manufacturing process. The tags will not be activated until shipping to assure maximum battery life. This tag program is a great cost saver for the customer. When the battery life is used up, simply call Alpha Watch Inc. for a return authorization number and ship the tags back in a box or padded envelope for a battery replacement. It is cheaper to repair original tags then to purchase new tags, which results in a major savings for the customer. Alpha Watch Inc. recommends resident tags be tested daily to assure proper operation. An Alpha Watch tag tester is available. Each tag undergoes extreme testing prior to shipping. When the manufacturing process is completed all tags are sent to the quality control department for environmental testing. There the tags are water tested, heated to extreme temperatures and frozen. They are then let sit for several hours allowing them to return to room temperature. Final testing consists of a proper range and operation test. Before packaging tags will be individually programmed with an ID#. All these steps insure that the Alpha Watch resident tags are the most reliable in the field. Slide the band through the tabs of the tag from the bottom to the top. 2. Place the tag on the top of the wanderer’s wrist or around their ankle. Bring the band around so that the wholes meet the snap. 3. Adjust the band to a comfortable position for the resident. Take care not to make the band so loose that it will slip off. 4. Select the proper hole and slip it down the post of the snap Bring the excess band back over allowing the next whole to also slip down on the post of the snap assembly. 5. Close the snap by bending the flap over and squeezing the two components together. 6. Cut off any excess band with scissors. REMOVALS OF TAG – To remove the tag, simply cut the band with scissors and slide the tag off of the band. Write down at what door and time the problem occurs. Take note of any unusual activity in the area of the door. 2. Is the systems a single door or a double door? 3. What is the location of the receive aerial and how is it mounted? 4. Is any other equipment hooked to the same 110 volt power source? 5. Is there a surge suppressor attached to the equipment? 6. What is the detect range of the door? 7. Is the keypad operating properly, if not what happens? 8. Is the display showing the proper information, if not what does it show? Find the software version (9023) and setup code (9022) All equipment repairs are done promptly by Alpha Watch, Inc. If it is determined that any component needs to be sent back for repair, it must be sent, by you, directly to Alpha Watch, Inc using a carrier that can show proof of delivery etc.: (Fed Exp, UPS) . It is also a good idea to insure the package returned. All returns must be accompanied by a written explanation of the problem as well as return authorization number. TECHNICAL SUPPORT DEAD OR CORRUPT LCD DISPLAY The Alpha Watch II is controlled by a microcomputer, and as with any computer the Alpha Watch II+ is susceptible to failure due to dips or spikes in the power to the system. If this occurs usually it is necessary to remove the power to the control unit, wait approximately five and power the unit back up. If this problem is reoccurring it may be necessary to use a small battery backup unit to keep the unit running properly during power fluctuations. GREEN POWER LED - DEAD If the Green LED is not lit on the control unit this means that power is not getting to the control unit. Use the following steps to determine the problem. 1. Is Red LED lit on power supply? No: a) Make sure there is 110 VAC plus of power supply b) Make sure circuit breaker is not blown, if it is reset by pushing in. c) Disconnect wires going to Alpha II unit, if red light does not come on, replace power supply. Yes: Check to make sure there is 13.8 VDC output of power supply, if no, disconnect Alpha II unit and see if voltage comes back. If the voltage is good, go on to checking the fuse of the unit. 2. Checking fuse of control unit: Measure the continuity of the fuse using an ohm meter. Do not depend on a visual inspection of the fuse. If fuse is blown replace with a 5X20mm 2A slow blow. NO ALARMING The Alpha Watch II+ should enter an alarm condition when the following conditions are met: 1. Tag is detected with the RED LED on 2. Door is open and "DO" is displayed on LCD display If the above conditions are met, the display should read "Alarm" on the top line and the audible line should be sounding. If the display reads "Alarm" on the top line of the display but there is no audible alarm. Make sure that the wires going to the audible device are plugged into JB5 with the Red wire on the "+" terminal. If the wires are connected to JB5 and the display indicate an alarm condition the control unit is defective. NO ALARMING (cont.) If the display reads "Alpha Watch II" on the first line then either the tag was not detected or the door does not register an open condition ("DO" on display). If display does not register "DO" on the bottom center of the display, when the displays are opened, check the following: 1. Is the wire to the door switches shorted together at the control unit or the switch? 2. Are there two or more switch ties in parallel instead of series. If you cannot find a wiring problem pull off the connector J4. If the display does not read "DO" the controller unit is defective. If the unit DOES read "DO" when connector is removed then there is a wiring problem or a bad door switch. ALPHA WATCH II+™ EQUIPMENT WARRANTY Alpha Watch, INC. agrees to adjust, repair or replace, free of charge, upon return to Alpha Watch, INC. any components, which are found to be defective due to manufacturing within thirty six (36) months of the date of shipment by Alpha Watch, INC. After receipt, Alpha Watch, INC. will determine whether the goods are defective and if so, what caused the defect. If a manufacturing defect is found, Alpha Watch, INC. will replace or repair them, and return to THE BUYER as soon as possible. If Alpha Watch, INC. determines that the goods are not defective due to a manufacturing defect, or are not covered by warranty, it will notify BUYER and arrange to return the goods to BUYER, at BUYER'S expense, within thirty(30) days. This limited warranty does not cover any loss or damage associated with normal wear and tear, misuse, neglect improper installation or maintenance, repair or modification (other than by Alpha Watch, INC.), or shipping. Alpha Watch, INC. makes no warranties, express or implied, including warranties as to merchantability, or as to the fitness of the merchandise for any particular use of purpose. Alpha Watch, INC. shall not be liable for any loss or damage, directly or indirectly arising from the use, installation or maintenance of such merchandise or for consequential damages.
