Alster News Alster Communications, LLC Volume 15, Issue 6 June, 2011 Daniels - Narrowband Paging Daniels radios support narrowband (12.5 kHz – NTIA compliant) and wideband (25 kHz) paging for base station, simulcast and remote paging applications. Optional highpower power amplifiers are available to extend the coverage area. Paging Encoder A 3rd party paging encoder generates the paging format for analog (tone and voice) or digital display (numeric / alphanumeric output) pages. A variety of transmission standards are supported including: POCSAG at data transfer rates of 512, 1200, and 2400 Baud; Motorola's FLEX™ 2 and 4-level modulation Paging Protocol at data transfer rates up to 1600 bps; PURC controller signal. The Paging Modulator card interfaces the paging encoder to the Daniels radio module(s). It is designed for low power consumption, typically drawing less than 300 mA in steady state. It can also be configured for use as a data repeater whereby 2-level paging data is recovered, re-shaped and then retransmitted to an additional repeater/paging transmitter. In its standard configuration, the Paging card uses an on-board 10 MHz high stability OCXO frequency reference source. For high stability applications such as Simulcast, the Paging Modulator may also be configured to use an external high stability reference source. Narrowbanding If you have Daniels MT-3 transmit and receive modules and need to narrowband them, here is the process. First you purchase APK-RX3N214 and set aside six hours to upgrade your modules and get the IM87NCONV manual. The hard module is the receiver where you have to remove and replace the filters in addition to desoldering, move and resoldering jumpers. On the transmit module you have to desolder, move and resolder jumpers. Please call for more information. The nets can be local, or may include links through Internet Protocol to distant users and other authorized personnel. What makes the 5000 better is that the supporting 12 channels can be individu- ally configured to interface with radios, Voice over Internet Protocol and soft phones, public switched telephone network lines for connection to a standard telephone network, and Radio over Internet Protocol devices. Less Rackspace The advantage of the 5000 is rack space. The 1000/2000 takes up 5 1/4” of rack space for 12 chan- nels where the 5000 takes up 1 3/4”. For 24 channels the 1000/2000 takes up 10 1/2” where the 5000 takes up 3 1/2”. Less Cost The advantage of the 1000/2000 is cost. For a 24 channel system, the 1000/2000 system is about 15% less expensive than the 5000, including cables. So, it really comes down to dollars verses rack space and programmability.
