ASPIRING SYSTEMS 3
HOODS OF ALL SHAPES AND SIZES State-of-the-art systems for extracting or recirculating air in the kitchen, and a lot more technology besides. The latest generation of hoods are also chandeliers, room scenters (Baraldi), objects that make a decorative statement or even disappear out of sight altogether. We present a highly varied round-up of what the market now has to offer, each model representing a precise category of hood. Sirius offers a hand-painted ceramic hood, Falmec a model resembling a diamond, Beko a hood that doubles as a storage unit. Best has a roof garden hood, complete with aromatic plants. And then there are all the hoods that are “invisible” (or almost), such as those from Bora, Faber, Fulgor, Novy and Miele: these are either part of the hob, disappear into the worktop or wall unit, or retract into the ceiling. But whichever kind of extraction system is preferred, it is always important to read the Energy Label, which manufacturers have been obliged to provide since January 2015, certifying the efficiency rating, the lighting efficiency (LE), the grease filtering efficiency (GFE), the fluid dynamic efficiency (FDE) and the amount of noise generated. by Paola Leone

BUILT-IN SCENTS CAPPE BARALDI _NOA It not only extracts fumes and steam, but also releases fragrances: this is the dual function of Noa, a glass hood with a central circular section illuminated around the circumference, a feature that characterises the overall effect and produces a dynamic quality. As well as extracting efficiently, Noa uses Deotech scenting technology, with various air-freshening fragrances (deep clean, light breeze and home aroma), created by simply adding a cartridge to the system. MINI GREENHOUSE BEST_BREATH The result of a collaboration between Best and Grazia Maioliche, Breath is a filter hood inspired by the idea of creating a micro roof garden indoors. The pots are designed to contain small plants and herbs but can also be used to store pasta, biscuits, spices and other products needed when working on recipes and meals. This hood presents a whole new “green” concept in hood design, as seen also in the low energy-consumption brushless motor and the high-efficiency filters. Design Davide Anzalone and Raul Frollà. COOKTOP INNOVATION BORA_BASIC Basic is an innovative solution that incorporates an extractor into the hob itself, with exhaust air removal or recirculation option. This thirdgeneration model establishes a new aesthetic and functional standard through the new stainless steel trim of the extraction unit and the touch control, which echoes the circular geometry of the hood, built into the 83cm-deep cooktop. The simple, intuitive controls set both the extraction function and that of the induction hob. It is easy to install, clean and maintain: the removable parts are easy to dismantle. The unit’s noise level has been reduced and its extraction power performance has been improved.

UP&DOWN, OUT OF SIGHT FABER_SKYLIFT Combining the versatility of Up&Down technology with the elegance of built-in models: Skylift is a hood that disappears into a recess in the ceiling and is brought down to the cooktop only when required. The movement involves four slender steel cables that support the elegantly designed white glass and steel volume. Lighting is provided by two powerful Led bars fitted to the inner side. These have an energy consumption of just 7 watts. Capacity 430m3/h Energy consumption 100W Noise level in dB (excluding booster function) 69

THE HOOD IN THE WALL
IT CAN BE COVERED WITH THE SAME SURFACING AS THE REST OF THE WALL, BLENDING IMPERCEPTIBLY INTO IT. THE NUAGE HOOD, FROM ELICA, IS A MODEL THAT WILL SATISFY VIRTUALLY ANY REQUIREMENT FOR AESTHETIC PERSONALISATION, AND BECOME COMPLETELY CAMOUFLAGED The Nuage hood emerges imperceptibly into its surroundings. ELICA 11
Nuage in the version clad in plasterboard and decorated with plasterwork to match the wall.
à elica.com This is the first hood that integrates perfectly into the architecture of the kitchen. It is called Nuage and is one of the new ideas presented by Elica at Eurocucina 2014. Designed by Fabrizio Crisà, it features a fluid surface that is perfectly adaptable to suit the customer’s personal taste. The front panel of Nuage can in fact be clad in a choice of different finishes: in white metal with personalised painted finish, in plasterboard or with other materials such as wood lamina, ceramic tiles, mosaic and stuccowork. In this way the surface of the hood blends seamlessly into the wall from which it emerges ambientecucina

in an extremely elegant and natural way, as if it were an extension of the wall itself. The Nuage hood thus appears as a very “discreet”, versatile appliance, one that ensures a perfect symbiosis between the kitchen and living area. But Nuage also offers considerable performance features, quite apart from its aesthetic appeal: it is fitted with a intuitive electronic rotating control and a high-performance, highefficiency motor. In addition, it comes in a filter version that can be converted to the extraction type with back-aspiration installation. The Led strip lighting provides efficient, natural lighting.

Visual features an innovative ventilation concept, devised by Gutmann and a world first. It is a system that ensures efficient extraction on both the upper and the lower surface; in this way fumes and steam are completely absorbed, leaving the air pure and fresh and creating a generally healthier indoor environment. With this perfect combination of aesthetic appeal and functional efficiency, Visual is supplied in an island version in three sizes.

THE INTERIOR 18
INTO THIN AIR IN AN OPEN-PLAN INTERIOR IN TURIN, ELICA’S CLOUD NINE HOOD SEEMS TO VANISH (AS INDEED A CLOUD MIGHT), LEAVING NO MORE THAN A TRANSLUCENT SURFACE AND A LUMINOUS OUTLINE
ambientecucina
project
THE INTERIOR 19
The designer of the kitchen-living area in Turin is Andrea Vigorita. The open-plan space centres around the island unit, which the sofa backs on to. The ceiling contains the rectangular hood with its flush-fitting linear lighting. In the foreground, the white table and vintage chandelier, with coloured, conical shades. The kitchen’s island unit, seen from the relaxation area, with the high stools of the snack bar. Behind, the storage units set into the wall, with a work area in the centre and tall units at either side housing the appliances.
An open-plan living space with a (mostly) open-plan kitchen, featuring a hood that disappears into the ceiling, leaving nothing more than a flat, luminous geometric element on display. These are the main features of this interior design scheme, the successful outcome of a renovation project involving a traditional-sized apartment in downtown Turin in an elegant early 20thcentury building. To satisfy the requirements of the owners, a family who wanted a modern home, designer Andrea Vigorita made a drastic decision. «The starting point was to completely invert the living area and the sleeping area», ambientecucina
project
he explains. «The space where the bedrooms used to be is now a large living area with kitchen, and this new area benefits from the French doors that open onto the balcony». Positioned on the side next to the window openings, the kitchen takes the form of an island (270x90 cm) with sink, in-line burners, and a snack bar, a feature that determines the layout of the whole space. Next to the island is the sofa, which faces the TV and the original fireplace; the sofa has its back to the dining area. With such an open-plan scheme, fume extraction was always going to be a major issue. «We chose the Cloud Nine hood,
from Elica, for both functional and aesthetic reasons. Not only does it have the advantage of hiding away into the ceiling, but its linear central light provided the inspiration for the illumination of the rest of the space, prompting the creation of luminous slits, ‘hollowed out’ of the ceiling and walls. This hood also has a powerful motor, making it ideal for intensive use in a large openplan space». The two luminous strips highlight what is already a bright space, as seen in the quartz worktop and the white units in the recess: a work area flanked by tall units containing the fridge-freezer and two mirror-finish ovens.
