Providing clean, glitch free switching between video inputs. Customizable Buttons 10 programmable buttons. 1 Quick setup guide The following is a simple setup showing the unit as a VGA scaler which can be used to verify that the unit is operating correctly from its factory default configuration and to learn some of the control methods of the unit. In order to carry out this setup you will need a personal computer and a monitor. Cable connections First, disconnect the monitor from the PC and connect the output from the PC video card to the RGB1 input of the scaler using the cable provided. Next, connect the monitor's cable to the RGB output connector on the scaler. Use the AC power cord provided to connect the unit to an AC outlet. Finally, turn on your PC, monitor and the unit at the AC power switch. After a few seconds to initialize itself, the CORIO2 logo will probably appear on the output monitor (depending on whether its default Program Source has been changed or not). You will then need to select the RGB1 input using one of the methods below: Selecting RGB1 using the front panel buttons By pressing the RGB1 button on the scaler (within the row of buttons marked 4 on the diagram above), the RGB1 connector will be selected as Program source and the PC image should appear scaled on the monitor. Since the buttons are all programmable, this may not happen if they have been altered - and you should instead follow the steps below to make sure the correct input selected. 2 Setting the 'Program source' to 'RGB1' using the jog dial From power up, rotate the jog dial (marked 3 on the previous diagram) until the 'Program source' option is shown, then press the jog dial to allow the option to be adjusted (the brackets will start flashing). Rotating the dial then changes the source in real time, the top line of the display indicates the auto-detected resolution of the Program source. Once the required input connector (RGB1) is shown press the jog dial again to exit the adjustment mode, at which point the brackets will stop flashing. Rotating the dial navigates through the menu Device Type Banner Screen Corio 2 Logo Program source Press Corio 2 Logo Program source Not valid Program source 800 x 600 60Hz Program source Press 800 x 600 60Hz Program source Once at the Program source menu, the display will show the source and [Logo] resolution / description. adjust the current Program source, [Logo] To depress the Jog dial once. The [ ] brackets will begin to flash indicating that [SDI1] the item is selected for adjustment. Rotating the jog dial changes the current Program source in real time. If there is no input detected or the source is out of range then the display will show 'Not valid' Rotate the dial until the Program source is RGB1. The unit should detect a valid [RGB1] resolution. Finally press the Jog dial again to exit [RGB1] from adjustment mode. 3 Setting the 'Output image' resolution First insure the brackets are not flashing - if they are, press the jog dial button once to stop them. Rotate the jog dial until the Output image option is displayed then press the jog dial once to allow adjustment of the Output Image resolution. Rotate the dial so that the required Output image resolution and refresh rate are shown. The Output image resolution is changed in real time so if a monitor is connected the user can see which image resolutions are supported by the monitor. Once the required Output image is shown, press the jog dial again to exit the adjustment mode (this will stop the brackets flashing). Rotating the dial navigates through the menu Device Type Banner Screen Press 800 x 600 60Hz Program source [RGB1] 800 x 600 60Hz Preview source [RGB1] 800 x 600 60Hz Lock source [RGB1] 800 x 600 60Hz Lock method [ Off] Rotate the jog dial until the Output 640 x 480 60Hz Output image[ 6] RGBHV image option is shown, the display will show the current output resolution. The following are just a few examples of the many possible applications. The scaler controls are designed to be easy to learn and use and in a logical order. If you find it difficult to connect and setup the unit for these applications, please continue reading the manual for further advice. Scan Conversion Outputs from a PC, Apple Mac & other workstations can be converted to feed virtually any TV or video device. Insure you select either PAL or NTSC as the Output image and that the type is 'CV/YC' (and not RGBHV, etc.). Connect a TV or video monitor to the CV or YC outputs. (Note that in CV/YC mode, the RGBHV outputs are not used.) By taking the RGB Preview output back to the monitor, you can preview what is being displayed without the need for a separate RGB splitter. 5 Picture In Picture (PIP) Allows any video input to be shrunk and placed into a window of any size at any position on a PC signal. You'll need to specify the Shrink value (10% to 100%) in the Output parameters menu - this will change the size of the PIP window. By leaving Preview source at RGB1 and changing just the Program source to YC1, you can still view your PC's output on the PC monitor. The Program source can then be changed to any desired input and the picture will be shrunk to fit the PIP window. 6 Standards Converter Converts one video standard to another, eg. PAL to NTSC, NTSC to PAL, NTSC to HDTV. For standard video outputs, insure you select either PAL or NTSC as the Output image and that the type is 'CV/YC' (and not RGBHV, etc.). For HDTV outputs, select a higher resolution (eg. 1920 x 1080i 60Hz). You may then need to change the Output image type - selecting from RGBHV, RGBS, RGsB and YUV - depending on what display you are using. 7 Format Converter Provides conversion between any input type to any output type such as a YC input to RGB output, as shown in the diagram. Simply make sure the Program source is set as YC1 and Output image is set for the resolution you want. The Output image type should generally be RGBHV for a PC monitor. 8 Seamless Switcher Provides glitch free switching of multiple sources. Hook up as many input connections as you like and switch between them using either the front panel buttons or the Program source option. By leaving Preview source as RGB1, you can keep your PC monitor active (when connected to RGB Preview as shown). 9 Connecting to the Scaler The section gives more details on the various connections available on the scaler. Rear panel connections No. Input(s) Connector type Signal type 1 RGB1, RGB2 HD-15 female RGBHV / RGBs / RGsB / YUV 2 RGB3 5 - BNC female RGBHV / RGBs / RGsB / YUV 3 YC1, YC2, YC3 4-pin mini-DIN S-video (separate Y/C) 4 CV1, CV2, CV3 BNC female Composite video 5 SDI1 BNC female Serial Digital Interface input* 6 SDI2 BNC female Serial Digital Interface genlock* Connector type Signal type No. Output(s) 7 RGB Preview, RGB HD-15 female RGBHV / RGBs / RGsB / YUV 8 RGB 5 - BNC female RGBHV / RGBs / RGsB / YUV 9 YC 4-pin mini-DIN S-video (separate Y/C) 10 CV Preview, CV BNC female Composite video 11 SDI BNC female Serial Digital Interface* No. Communications Connector type Signal type 12 OPTION D-15 female Option expansion connector** 13 RS232 D-9 male RS232 Serial Communications 14 ETHERNET RJ45 Ethernet connection* *SDI and Ethernet are factory-fitted options. **OPTION connector is solely for CORIO2 optional accessories. 10 Scaler inputs The Universal Scaler provides up to 10 inputs (SDI is a factory-fitted option) to allow connection to a variety of sources. All of the inputs can be used as the Program source, Preview source or Lock source - except the SDI inputs which are dedicated to being either input (SDI1) or genlock (SDI2). (No SDI preview is available.) When previewing an RGB input, it is available on the RGB Preview output. CV or YC Preview sources are available on the CV preview output. (YC is internally converted to CV for this purpose.) Program source, Preview source and Lock source can all be different, or the same - thus allowing maximum flexibility. By default, the 10 buttons on the front of the scaler represent the 10 inputs available - but these buttons are programmable by the user to serve a number of functions. Scaler outputs Up to 7 output connections are available, for a variety of purposes. Two RGB outputs (one on a HD-15 connector, the other on 5 BNCs) are available and provide identical scaled outputs at the same time. You can use either (or both) of these as the main scaler output. The outputs are operational when the Output image type is set to RGBHV, RGBS, RGsB or YUV. The CV, YC and SDI outputs are all active at the same time and are operational only when the Output image type is set to CV/YC. Note that it is not possible to output an RGB or YUV signal at the same time as CV, YC or SDI. The RGB Preview output represents one of the RGB inputs when Preview source is set appropriately. CV Preview outputs one of the CV or YC inputs when the Preview source is set appropriately (SDI preview is not available). RGB inputs & outputs RGB inputs and outputs can be in a variety of different formats (usually with different sync signals) and the correct cables and connection methods are required to insure a stable picture is displayed. The scaler also needs to be told which input type is being used (in the Setup Program source menu) and the Output image type required (in the Output image option). 11 All the RGB inputs and outputs are processed in the same way, but RGB3 and the 2nd RGB output are present as 5 separate signals on BNC connectors for added flexibility. The following is a description of the RGB types available and how to connect them (you may need to refer to the Advanced section later in this manual): RGBHV (separate Horizontal and Vertical syncs). This is the standard sync type for a PC and monitor and is normally connected to the HD-15 connectors. However, it is possible to connect to the BNCs - but insure you connect all 5 BNCs correctly. RGBS (separate Composite sync). Ideally, use the BNC connections for this, connecting to 4 of the BNCs. The HD-15 connectors can also be used, with composite sync on pin 13. RGsB (Composite sync on green). Any of the RGB connections can be used for this, though it is normal to use the 3 BNC connections of RGB3. YUV (also known as YCrCb, Y/R-Y/B-Y or YPbPr). Normally, 3 BNC connections on RGB3 will be made for this - make sure you connect the right ones. It is important to remember that the RGB Preview output is an unprocessed duplicate of one of the RGB1, RGB2 or RGB3 inputs - the scaler will not convert RGB to YUV, etc. when using the RGB Preview. Eg. If you feed RGBS into RGB1 and set RGB1 as the Preview source, then make sure you have a monitor connected to RGB Preview that can display an RGBS source. Serial Digital Interface The SDI connections (a factory-fitted option) are fully SMPTE 259M compliant and carry a digital representation of PAL or NTSC signals. Connections should be made using a high quality BNC to BNC lead to minimize signal loss. Note that embedded audio is not used by the unit - it is ignored. Connecting the RS232 cable The unit can be controlled from a computer by connecting to the RS232 port. The user control specification is available on request from your supplier and describes how to use this feature to control the unit remotely. See later for RS232 Connection details. Power connector & standby button The power switch on the front of the unit is a soft power (standby) switch and does not isolate the unit from the AC power - you should use the AC outlet switch for this, or disconnect the AC power code from the scaler unit. 12 Holding the power button in for a few seconds will put the unit into a lower power mode. In this mode, no other buttons will functions and the LCD and button LEDs will be turned off. Any unsaved settings will be lost. A single press of the power button will make the unit come out of standby mode and the unit will revert to the last-saved settings. 13 Controlling the Scaler Front panel features No. Name Usage 1 LCD The top line of the LCD shows the current sub menu or the currently detected video input resolution. The second line shows the parameter and adjustment value as indicated by [ ] brackets. These brackets will flash during adjustment. 2 Buzzer Used to indicate certain events 3 Jog dial Rotation of the jog dial is used to either navigate through the menu system, or to adjust highlighted parameters (in brackets). A single press of the jog dial allows parameter adjustment (within flashing brackets) and a second press returns to menu navigation. 4 Buttons These are multi-purpose buttons that can be programmed to select the Program source, Lock source and various common functions such as Freeze and Zoom. The factory default is for these buttons is to represent the selection of the 'Program Sources'. The button caps are removable, to allow insertion of different legends. 5 Function indicators The indicators above the buttons are used to indicate the buttons' states. When the button refers to an input selection the indicator will be illuminated when this input is selected as Program source. When it is selected as Preview source it will flash. 6 IR receiver Infra red remote control sensor. 7 Suspend button Hold down the power button for a few seconds and the unit will enter 'Standby Mode'. Press the button once to exit standby. On resume, the previously saved settings are restored. 14 Engineering Reset When the unit is on, hold down programmable buttons 1 and 2 along with the suspend switch until the units beeps. The unit has now been reset to the factory defaults. Engineering reset should only be used if the unit's settings give an invalid output from which the user cannot exit. All settings except changes to image parameters will be lost following an Engineering Reset. Instant Save Holding down the jog dial for 3 seconds will cause the unit to store all current settings and emit a single beep. These settings are stored in non-volatile memory and will be preserved even when power is removed. By setting the unit up in a particular way (eg. with picture in picture mode active) and storing this setting, you can insure your unit always powers-up in the same state. Front Panel Locking (This is available in firmware version 104 and above.) Holding down the Power button and then immediately holding down button 10, both for about 2 seconds, will lock the front panel from any further changes of the unit's settings. The power LED will flash green. Repeating the process will unlock the front panel. When locked, a user can view all the unit's settings using the rotary control, but cannot adjust anything. 15 User Adjustments Menu navigation Navigation is achieved by rotating and pushing the Jog dial. Rotating the dial will navigate up and down the menu system. In order to enter a sub menu or to adjust a setting the Jog dial should be pushed once. Adjustable values within the menu system are enclosed in [] brackets. If the menu item is highlighted within the brackets and the jog dial is pressed once, the brackets will flash indicating that the value can be adjusted by rotating the jog dial. All adjustments occur in real time. The adjustment mode is stopped by pressing the jog dial again, at which point the brackets will stop flashing. This section goes through the main menus available via the LCD and what control they have over the unit. Advanced adjustments are covered in the next chapter. Main menu The Main menu adjustments cover the basic input/output of the scaler, with the other sub-menus relating to 'fine tuning' of the system. For the Program source, Preview source and Lock source displays, the top line always shows the currently detected input resolution. If no input is present or the input resolution is not recognised, the display will reflect this. Device Type Banner Screen 640x480 60Hz Program source Selects the main Program [RGB1] source for scaler processing. 640x480 60Hz Preview source Selects which source to feed to [RGB1] the preview output. 640x480 60Hz Lock source Chooses a source that can be [RGB1] locked to (eg. for overlay). Adjust lock method Lock method [ (Only adjustable when Lock method is Off) NTSC / 60Hz Output image[ Selects the type of lock or Off] overlay method required. 1] CV/YC Controls the resolution to be output and the sync type Program source This defines which input is to be used as the main input to the scaler engine. 16 Only this input can have various processing such as Zoom and Shrink performed on it and thus is the source for any picture in picture effects. The indicator light above a button will be on when its input is selected for Program source. Preview source The 'Preview Source' is a method of feeding one input directly to the corresponding preview output. Eg. if RGB2 is the Preview source then RGB Preview will be the preview output connector. Note that the CV and YC inputs all output to the CV Preview connector. The purpose of this is to allow the user to see the quality or content of the input signal before using at the Program source. Doing this requires another monitor for each preview output connector. Preview Source is completely independent of the Program source - although the Front Panel programmable buttons can be programmed to switch them together on a single press, or separately with two presses. The indicator light above a button will flash when its input is selected for Preview source (unless it is also select as Program source). Lock source The Lock source allows selection of the input used as the basis for genlocking, picture in picture, overlay and underlay. You can choose any input connector, completely independently of Program source or Preview source - however it only becomes active when the Lock method is set to anything other than 'Off', at which point the scaler's Output image and type are locked to the Lock source (and thus the Output image is no longer adjustable). Lock method This defines what the unit will do with the Lock source input signal. While using underlay and overlay it is possible to adjust the key levels used in this process. See the Advanced section for details of how to adjust the key level. Lock method Description Off The 'Lock Source' is unused and Output image determines the resolution to output. Lock (Genlock.) The unit will syncronize itself to the 'Lock source' signal, overriding the Output image setting. If no signal (or a poor signal) is present you may get erratic results from the unit or no picture at all. 17 PIP (Picture in picture.) The unit will syncronize itself to the 'Lock source' signal, overriding the Output image setting. 'Program source' will be placed in a window over the current 'Lock source'. Note that you will probably need to alter the Shrink setting in the Output parameters menu to adjust the PIP window size. Overlay The unit will syncronize itself to the 'Lock source' signal, overriding the Output image setting. The 'Program source' will be placed in a window over the current 'Lock source' and use the key levels from the Lock/Overlay menu to determine which of the Program source pixels will appear and which will be transparent (thus revealing the Lock source beneath). Underlay CV, YC and SDI Lock sources only* The unit will syncronize itself to the 'Lock source' signal, overriding the Output image setting. The 'Program source' will be placed in a window under the current 'Lock source' and use the key levels from the Lock/Overlay menu to determine which of the Lock source pixels will appear and which will be transparent (thus revealing the Program source beneath). *Firmware versions 112 and above have an option called 'Dig RGB Lock source' in the 'Adjust lock/overlay' menu. When turned On (the default is Off), it is possible to use Underlay mode when both of the following are true: the Lock source is set to RGB1, RGB2 or RGB3; and the Program source is set to CV1, CV2, CV3, YC1, YC2, YC3 or SDI1. Output image This is the image resolution and type that will be output and will also determine which of the output connectors will be active. There are many pre-programmed Output image resolutions, however the unit can be programmed using the CORIO2 Control panel to define up to 1000 different resolutions. The Output image type can be changed according to the user's connection requirements, with the following options: RGBHV gives separate Horizontal and Vertical syncs. This is the standard sync type for a PC and monitor. RGBS outputs separate Composite sync. RGsB outputs Composite sync on green. YUV outputs luminance and color-difference signals, also known as YCrCb, Y/R-Y/B-Y or YPbPr. CV/YC is available only for PAL and NTSC output resolutions and enables the CV, YC and SDI outputs. In this mode, all RGB outputs are disabled. 18 It is very important to get the right Output image type and various connection methods are described in the previous section under 'RGB inputs and outputs'. Getting the wrong Output image type will usually result in 'loss of sync', where the picture is very unstable or moving. 19 Advanced adjustments These features allow full control of the scaling abilities of the unit. A number of sub menus are accessible from the main menu and all terminate with an 'Exit' command to return to the main menu. The sub menus are divided into general categories as shown: Sub menu ... Setup Program source Adjusts the Program source's inputs settings - eg. Position. Sub menu ... Adjust scaler parameters Adjusts Zoom, Pan, Shrink, Flicker reduction, Flip, etc. Sub menu ... Adjust lock / overlay Adjusts Lock offsets, Key levels, etc. Sub menu ... Adjust buttons Adjusts features of the programmable buttons. Sub menu ... Adjust image parameters Adjusts resolution timing information. Sub menu ... System Provides information about the System. Each sub-menu is described in detail on the following pages. 20 Setup Program source - for RGB, CV and YC inputs A powerful feature of the unit is the ability to adjust each of the inputs individually - eg. for brightness, image position, de-interlacing method, etc. This feature is provided using dynamic menus whereby the options available within the Setup Program source menu change depending on the current Program source (eg. the menu options available for input RGB1 are very different to those available for input CV1). These adjustments apply only to the Program source currently in use and are maintained until the unit is disconnected from the supply. They will be restored only if they have been saved by holding down the jog dial (see 'Controlling the scaler'). The adjustments are performed in real time allowing any changes to be viewed on the output connectors. The following table shows which options are available, depending on which input connector is in use: RGB1 RGB2 RGB3 CV1 CV2 CV3 YC1 YC2 YC3 SDI Program source TL pos. adj.[ 0] RGB1 0 Program source TL pos. adj.[ 0] CV1 0 Program source TL pos. adj.[ 0] SDI1 0 Program source BR size adj.[ 0] RGB1 0 Program source BR size adj.[ 0] CV1 0 Program source BR size adj.[ 0] SDI1 0 Program source Input pixel phase Program source RGB input type RGB1 Program source [ 16] De-int. Top-left image capture position adjustment. Used to insure the input connector signal is captured correctly - thus eliminating any black borders to the top and left. 21 This option is often used to correct the position of a PC signal on an RGB input, or to eliminate any undesired noise at the top of a PAL or NTSC video-tape playback. A white border will appear when adjusting this option, to show the Output image window size - you are effectively altering the image within this window. BR size adj. Bottom-right image capture size adjustment. Like the top-left adjustment, but this alters the overall size of the captured image thus effectively altering the bottom-right capture 'end point'. For PC RGB inputs, this will normally be left at 0,0. For a PAL or NTSC video-tape playback signal, it is normal to adjust this to fine-tune the image size, thus eliminating unwanted picture noise. Input pixel phase Provides adjustment to the phase of the pixel clock in relation to the horizontal sync. This option is only available for the RGB connectors and is used to insure that the analog to digital convertor captures each pixels precisely in the middle. Adjustments to this parameter will reduce shadowing effect of pixelated images and thus make the image 'crisper'. RGB input type The connection type for the RGB signal - RGBHV, RGBS, RGsB or YUV. See 'RGB inputs and outputs' in the 'Connecting the scaler' section. RGB Contr. Provides separate adjustment of red, green and blue contrast levels for RGB inputs. A higher value will generally boost the input signal contrast. De-int. Adjusts the method used to de-interlace an interlaced input. An interlaced input consists of two fields separated in time. Both fields are required in order to make up the full-resolution input image, but since they are sent one after the other, a moving image would have 'motion-artefacts' if the two fields were simply combined together. 3:2 Film sources (NTSC only) are auto-detected by the scaler and an 'FM' shows in the menu option that Film Mode is best suited for this input source. Different de-interlace methods are available in order to cope with different interlaced video sources. They are summarized in the following table: 22 Mode Function Normal The two interlaced fields are simply combined together. This will often show artefacts in moving images. Auto Automatically selects Film 3:2 or M.comp med. depending on whether Film Mode is detected or not. Film 3:2 Enables 3:2 pull down conversion of the incoming NTSC video signal. This option is ignored if the source is not NTSC. M.comp low Enables the pixel-adaptive motion compensation. M.comp med. Three levels are available, with low providing the M.comp high least compensation for motion and high providing the most. Bright / Contrast Adjusts the brightness and contrast of a CV or YC input. This can be used to correct for dark or poorly-contrasted image sources, so that all video sources can be made to match each other. It is adjusted in %, where 100% is for a normal input signal. Satur / Hue Adjusts the saturation and hue of the CV or YC input. Saturation adjusts the amount of color in the video source, while Hue adjusts the actual colors displayed - and is generally only needed for some NTSC sources. Saturation is adjusted in %, where 100% is for a normal input signal. Hue can go positive or negative depending on which direction in the color spectrum the colors should be adjusted. Sharpness Adjust the sharpness of a CV or YC input. Values from -7 to -1 will make the image appear softer, while values from +1 to +7 will cause the image to appear 'crisper'. A value of 0 applies no sharpening to the image and is the default. Video standard Allows selection of the incoming color standards on a CV or YC input. The scaler can partially auto-detect an incoming video signal standard, but needs to be told about certain video standards used. The options for this setting are listed in the following table: 23 Setting Used for... PAL BGDHI / NTSC M Normal PAL and NTSC NTSC 4.43 50 / PAL 60 Specialized PAL and NTSC PAL N / NTSC 4.43 60 Specialized PAL and NTSC NTSC N 3.58 / PAL M Specialized PAL and NTSC NTSC-Japan 3.58 SECAM Specialized NTSC SECAM Luma delay Adjusts the Luminance to Chrominance phase delay for CV or YC inputs. Sometimes a video source may have the color signal offset slightly to the left or right. This option can be used to compensate for most of these problems. Aspect ratio Used to indicate the aspect ratio of the incoming video signal. Used in conjunction with the Output parameters Aspect ratio option in order to provide ratio conversion. e.g. 4:3 to 16:9. Setup Program source - Logo This menu provides adjustments for the Logo Program source where a Logo or Testcard is the image source instead of an input connector. The unit provides the ability to store 15 different images as Logos or Testcards and new ones are downloadable using the Windows control panel. These images behave as if they are an actual video input and are therefore scaled to the defined Output image resolution. They can be zoomed and shrunk and can be used as a Program source for picture in picture and overlay. Program source Testcard Logo Specifies which Logo / Testcard [ 1] to display. Testcard Selects which Logo or Testcard will be shown. It may take a few seconds for the new image to appear, during which time the Front Panel will be dormant. 24 Adjust scaler parameters Note : Depending on the Output image type (eg. CV/YC) some of the menu items will not be shown as they are not applicable to the selected Output image. Adjust scaler parameters Sets the zoom level for the Zoom level % [ 100] Program source. Adjust scaler parameters Horizontal pan position within the H/V zoom pan % [ 50] 50 Program source. Adjust scaler parameters Freezes the Program source. Image freeze [Off] Adjust scaler parameters Fine tunes the output resolution H/V out shift[ 0] 0 position. Adjust scaler parameters Adjusts size of Output image Shrink level % [100] window. Adjust scaler parameters Adjust the position of the shrunk H/V shr. pos.% [ 0] 0 window within Output image. Only when CV/YC output Adjust scaler parameters Sets the flicker reduction level to Flicker reduction [Low] use. Adjust scaler parameters Changes the level of smoothing Image smoothing [High] for scaled pixels. Adjust scaler parameters Flips the image horizontally, Image flip [Off] vertically, or both. Adjust scaler parameters Enables de-glitching of input and De-glitch [ On] output changes. (Firmware versions Adjust scaler parameters Defines how long it takes to fade 104 and above) Switching fade time[ .5] between Program sources Only when RGB output Adjust scaler parameters Alters the RGB voltage level Output RGB level [80] output. Only when CV/YC output Adjust scaler parameters Adjusts the subcarrier to Output SC/H phase [ 0] horizontal sync phase. Only when CV/YC output Adjust scaler parameters Changes the cross-color reduction Cross-col.red. [Off] level. Adjust scaler parameters Sets the aspect ratio for the Aspect Ratio [4:3] output. Zoom level % Allows you to view a section of the Program source at up to 10x normal size (1000%). At high levels of zoom, you may start to see individual pixels. By default, the scaler will smooth these together - an option that can be disabled in the 'Adjust Scaler Parameters' menu under 'Image smoothing'. Pan adjustments are provided to vary the positional source of the zoomed picture. 25 H/V zoom pan % Once selected the jog dial can be used to adjust the horizontal & vertical pan position. This is measured as a % of the Program source width and height. Thus 50%, 50% will zoom into the middle of the picture and 0%, 0% would zoom into the top-left of the picture - although the scaler will apply limits to this, so that you can't zoom into an area off the picture. Image Freeze This will cause the 'Program Source' to be frozen. Any adjustments to an image while frozen will have no effect until the image is unfrozen. H/V out shift Fine adjustment of the horizontal and vertical display positions of the Output image. While it is possible to use the Adjust image parameters for the resolution you are using in order to shift the image around, it is generally better to do fine adjustment with this option instead. When adjusting the image position, a white border will appear around the Output image window. Note that if you change the Output image resolution (eg. from 800x600 to 1024x768), the same H/V shift will be applied. If the H/V shift is large, then it is better to use the Adjust image parameters menu instead - which modifies the scaler's resolution database. Shrink level % Shrinks the output image window from 100% down to 10% of the original Output image size - see A in the next diagram. Eg. For an 800x600 Output image, an Output shrink of 50% would output a 400x300 window within an 800x600 output resolution. This feature is generally used for PIP (picture in picture) mode, but can be used for other effects. In general, if you require fine-adjustment of an Output image size, this should be done in the Adjust image parameters menu instead - where the user has very fine control over the Output image resolution. 26 The Output shrink option is designed for quick and easy temporary size adjustments - not permanent corrections. A white border will appear when adjusting this setting. H/V shr.pos.% Adjusts the position of the shrunk output window as a percentage of the Output image resolution width and height. This allows a shrunken window to be placed anywhere within the Output image. Eg. a value of 50%, 50% would place the shrunk window in the middle of the Output image resolution. 0%, 0% Would place it in the top-left corner. Flicker reduction Alters the flicker reduction level of CV/YC outputs. The unit defaults to using a Low filter, as this is adequate for most uses. Flicker Mode Function Off Disables flicker reduction Low Suitable for most Program sources Med More suitable for very detailed line drawings. Thin horizontal lines cause the most flicker and if this is seen, the highest flicker reduction filtering should be used. High Offers the maximum amount of flicker reduction. This mode may not be suitable for some images because of excessive vertical softening of the image Image smoothing Image smoothing reduces jagged-edges within the Output image by softening them and in general greatly improves the scaled image quality. It is a matter of preference as to what is more suitable for a particular application and this option may be best turned Off if a high zoom level is used where individual pixels need to be seen. Image flip Allows the user to flip the image completely in either or both of the horizontal & vertical directions. 27 De-glitch output When on, provides clean, seamless switches between video sources and prevents picture break-up when adjusting Zoom and Shrink levels. This feature is normally left on, but it may be necessary to turn it off if an input is very unstable - as the scaler would not normally allow an unstable image to appear on the screen. Switching fade time (This option is available in firmware versions 104 and above.) This setting defines the time in seconds for the unit to fade the existing Program source to black and then fade the new Program source back in. This provides a smooth fade when changing the Program source. The default value is 0.5 seconds, with 0 turning the feature off, and with a maximum value of 5.0 seconds. Output RGB level Adjustment of the RGB video signal level. This option will only appear when outputting RGB or YUV. Output SC/H phase Provides adjustment of the phase between the subcarrier and horizontal sync signal. It can be used to reduce the color shifts when genlocking to an incoming CV or YC signal (and mixing remotely) and thus is not available when outputting RGB. Cross-col.red. Cross color reduction is used to correct for high frequency luma information being decoded as chroma information by reducing the luminance bandwidth. This option is not displayed when outputting RGB. Aspect ratio Sets the output H and V scaling ratio dependant on the aspect ratio setting for each input (see Setup Program source). For example, if the output is set to 16:9 and the Program source is specified as 4:3, the unit will scale the output so black bars are present on the left and right of the image. 28 Adjust lock/overlay The features within this menu only come into play when the Lock method is set to anything other than 'Off'. Adjusts sync & image position in Adjust lock / overlay Lock pixel offset[ 0] relation to the Lock source (Firmware versions Adjust lock / overlay Enables Underlay when Lock 112 and above) Dig RGB Lock source[Off] source is an RGB connection Adjusts sync & image position in Adjust lock / overlay Lock line offset [ 0] relation to the Lock source Adjust lock / overlay Y key min[ 0], max 32 Luminance (Y) key level for overlay and underlay Adjust lock / overlay U key min[ 0], max 255 U (B-Y) key level for overlay and underlay Adjust lock / overlay V key min[ 0], max 255 V (R-Y) key level for overlay and underlay Dig RGB Lock source (Available on firmware versions 112 and above.) This enables a method of performing Underlay when the Lock source is set to an RGB connector - see 'Lock method' earlier in this manual. It stands for 'digitize RGB lock source' and means that the RGB Lock source is digitally processed, thus allowing key-level detection - but only when the Program source is not coming from an RGB connector. Note that this option defaults to Off, as when enabled it can degrade the seamless switching function of the scaler (since Underlay is not possible when the Program source is switched to an RGB connector). Lock pixel offset Adjustment of the Output image horizontal sync & image position in relation to the Lock source. See 'A' in the next diagram, where A represents the Output image horizontal sync and image position being offset by a number of pixels. In normal use, this value should be left at 0. Lock line offset Adjustment of the Output image vertical sync and image position in relation to the Lock source. 29 This is virtually identical to the Lock pixel offset, except that it is the number of lines being offset that is being adjusted. Y key min / max U key min / max V key min / max Set the luminance & chrominance key values for overlay and underlay modes which then create various lumakey and chromakey modes. See also 'Lock method' earlier in this manual. Where the pixel color is within the luminance (Y) and chrominance (U & V) minimum and maximum values, the pixel is 'keyed-out' and becomes transparent. When not within all the min/max limits, the pixel is displayed. The key values are provided in YUV format in order to select luma (Y) and chroma (U & V) keying. A simple method to set a key color to an on screen color is to set all the YUV key min/max values to 0 and 255 - at which point all pixels will become transparent. Then increase the Y key min value until the required pixel color re-appears. Go back a few steps until it disappears which gives you the Y key min value for that pixel color. Do the same with the Y key max value, reducing it instead from 255 until the pixel appears, etc. Repeat the above for the U & V key min/max settings. You should then have the YUV key min/max values for the required pixel color. Leaving the U & V Min/Max values at 0 and 255 (ie. to encompass all values), will create a Lumakey - where only the Y Key Min/Max value has any effect. 30 Adjust Buttons Adjust buttons Button[ 1] input=RGB1 Controls what the programmable buttons do. Controls how the buttons select Adjust buttons Instant prog.select[ On] the Program/Preview sources. Controls whether Preview Adjust buttons Preview follow mode[ On] sources follows Program source Button This allows the reprogramming of the 10 programmable buttons. The first number in brackets is the button you want to adjust and the second option in brackets is the function that should happen when the button is pressed. Each button can be assigned to change the 'Program Source' to any of the inputs, or to change the 'Lock Source' to any of the inputs, or even to provide simple access to some of the units common functions such as 'Freeze' and 'Zoom'. More advanced use allows Presets to be assigned to the buttons - see later. In the case of Zoom, Shrink and Pan, holding the programmed button down will cause the function to auto-repeat. The transparent windows of the buttons can be carefully removed with a small screwdriver and replacement inserts are provided at the back of the manual. The buttons are setup by default to select the input connectors. Instant prog.select This option is On by default and allows a single button press to change the Program source and Preview source at the same time. When this option is Off, the first button press will select that input as the Preview source (and the button's indicator light will flash). The second press of the same (flashing) button will then choose that input as the Program source as well. The advantage of requiring two button presses is that the signal source can be previewed on a monitor to check signal quality and content, without affecting the Program source. Only when the quality and content have been seen would the input be used as the Program source. Otherwise a different Preview source could be selected, again without affecting the scaler's main output. The two-button method also gives the scaler's input circuits time to start processing the next Program source before it has been selected - since there will be a time delay between the first and second button press. Preview follow mode (Only in firmware version 104 and above.) The default value of 'On' specifies that the Preview source will follow the Program source (as defined in 'Instant prog. select' above). 31 When set to 'Off', Preview source is no longer affected by the front panel buttons and can be fixed to one input - for example to always feed an RGB connector input back to a nearby monitor. Presets & Restore Presets allow the user to create up to 5 pre-defined settings for the scaler. 'Restore' will restore the power-on settings (ie. to when they were last saved by holding in the rotary control knob). Presets themselves do not store the whole current setting of a scaler - they only store a number of individual values of the scaler's settings. For example, if Programmable button 10 was defined as Preset 1, you can program that button to just set the Output image to 20 (eg. 1024x768 60Hz). That's all it might be programmed to change - or you may want something more complex like setting the "Shrink %" value to 50 and the "H/V shr. pos.%" settings to 0,0. The Presets are designed to be as flexible as you need them to be. To set up a preset, follow these steps: 1. Using the Adjust buttons menu, assign a Preset (eg. Preset 1) to a Programmable button. Once the Preset is assigned, the LED above that button will always be on. 2. Using the rotary control go to the menu item you want to save, so that it is highlighted in the square brackets - eg. the Shrink % value. Ensure it is the value you want it to be - adjust it if necessary. 3. Press and hold the Programmable button with the Preset assigned to it until you hear a high-pitched beep. This indicates that that setting's value has been stored to that Preset. 4. That's it! Whenever you press that Programmable button, it will bring back that setting's value. To add more settings to the same Preset, re-do 2 and 3 above for each setting in turn. These new settings will add to the list stored in memory. To delete a Preset, hold down the Programmable button it's assigned to until you hear a high-pitched beep and then a low-pitched beep. This second beep indicates that the Preset has been deleted. Presets are always non-volatile, so will retain the settings data even when power is removed. However, the Programmable buttons' settings (eg. which Presets are assigned to which buttons) are not non-volatile, so you should Store them if needed (by holding in the rotary control knob). 32 Adjust image parameters This menu provides access to the basic resolution database within the scaler. This database is used by the scaler to identify any incoming video signal and is also used to create an Output image. DO NOT ADJUST THESE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING otherwise you risk creating a non-standard resolution that is not displayable on a monitor. The resolutions and values within the database are all standard and should not normally be altered by the user. However, there may be times when this is necessary - for example to create a custom resolution with specific parameters. Any changes made to this database take effect immediately and are also stored straight away in non-volatile memory. A white border will appear when adjusting most of these settings. NOTE: Since this database is used for both input and output image processing, altering a resolution that is used for both (eg. 1024x768 input and 1024x768 output) may give unusual effects. 800 x 600 60Hz Image # to adjust This specifies the resolution to [ 12] alter. 800 x 600 60Hz Interlaced Whether the resolution is [ On] interlaced or not Coarse adjustment of the 800 x 600 60Hz H.freq.crse [ 37.879]kHz Horizontal frequency Fine adjustment of the 800 x 600 60Hz H.freq.fine [ 37.879]kHz Horizontal frequency Number of pixel clocks per line 800 x 600 60Hz Clks/l[1056]= 40.000MHz 800 x 600 60Hz Lines/f[ 628]= 60.31Hz 800 x 600 60Hz H/V active [ 800]x 600 800 x 600 60Hz H/V start [ 88] 33 800 x 600 60Hz H/V sync [ 128] 4 800 x 600 60Hz Sync polarity [+H+V] Number of lines per frame Active pixels and lines displayed Pixel and line offset of top-left of image Pixel and line widths of sync signals Polarity of syncs Image to adjust The entry in the resolution database to be adjusted. Normally the user would select the image # currently being used for input or output. 33 Interlaced Switched from interlaced to non interlaced (progressive) scanning mode. Note that certain vertical line settings take on slightly different meanings in interlaced mode. H.freq.fine H.freq.crse Provide adjustment of the horizontal sync frequency in steps of either 100Hz or 1Hz. Clks/l Total number of pixel clocks per line (A+B+C+D in the previous diagram). This value is normally a multiple of 8 and will often affect how well a digital display device (eg. TFT monitor) will display an image. An incorrect value will often cause vertical bands to appear. Lines/f Total number of lines per frame (E+F+G+H in the previous diagram). For an interlaced resolution, one frame encompasses both fields, causing this value to be an odd number. H/V active Number of active (displayed) pixels and lines within the resolution (D and H in the previous diagram). For an interlaced resolution, the number of lines is counted over both fields. H/V start Value of the 'back porch' preceding the start of the video period (C and G in the previous diagram). H/V sync Horizontal and Vertical sync pulse width (B and F in the previous diagram). In interlaced modes, the vertical sync width is counted in half-lines. Sync polarity Indicates negative or positive going levels for the H and V sync pulses for RGB mode. 34 System This sub menu provides information about the scaler's internal settings. Fan speed (rpm) Current fan speed in revolutions per minute (rpm). Under normal operation this should be around 5500 rpm. This is continuously monitored and if it falls below a critical level a Fault condition will be generated and the unit will shut down. In Indicates the current number of lines, refresh rate and sync polarity of the Program Source. (For information only.) The number of lines shows is number of incoming scan lines, which may be more than expected as it includes blanked lines that are not viewable. A 1024x768 image might actually have a total 806 lines in it, with 38 of them used for 'vertical blanking'. Pixels stored The number of pixels stored in the image memory. Since the maximum number of pixels per line that can be stored is 1024, any incoming video signal with more than this number of pixels will be sub-sampled. A value less than 1024 indicates that either the input resolution, or the output resolution has fewer than 1024 pixels in it - or that the image is zoomed or shrunk. Lines stored The number of lines stored in the image memory. Since the maximum number of lines per frame that can be stored is 1024, any incoming video signal with more than this number of lines will be scaled to fit in the image memory. 36 A value less than 1024 indicates that either the input resolution, or the output resolution has fewer than 1024 lines in it - or that the image is zoomed or shrunk. Fault Condition If the scaler detects a fault in its hardware, it will generate a Fault condition screen and emit a buzzing noise. After 10 seconds the scaler will then go into a low power mode and continue buzzing. The user should remove power from the unit and contact technical support for help. Fault conditions include (but are not limited to): over-temperature (eg. too high an ambient operating temperature); slow fan speed; and electronic circuit fault. 37 Firmware update The universal scaler can be updated with new firmware when available providing general updates and feature enhancements. Updates when released will be available from your supplier or at www.corio2.info and are programmed into the scaler using a Firmware Update tool. Firmware update tool This is a Windows program with the sole function of updating the system firmware. It uses a '.c2' firmware file to update the scaler's firmware and restore all factory settings. Insure that the unit is powered and the serial cable is connected to the PC. From the Firmware Update tool, select the COM (RS232) port you are using and then click Update firmware. If problems arise, you may be asked to remove power from the unit. Do this by turning off at the AC power outlet or by disconnecting the AC power cord from the unit. Once the unit has been detected the firmware update can begin and a progress bar indicates how long it will take - generally several minutes. Please note that all saved settings and custom resolutions will be erased during this procedure. Firmware update failure This may be caused by a faulty RS232 cable, or problem with the PC. If the firmware update fails the scaler will be unresponsive, but new firmware can still be programmed into it. You will be asked to remove and re-apply power when re-doing the firmware update. If the unit continues to have problems updating, contact technical support. 38 Returns Procedure Are you sure there's a fault? As many 'faults' are due to incorrect set-up or use, a simple check list is provided below to help you identify potential problems. Set the unit up with your equipment as described in this manual and run through the check list. This will hopefully determine whether or not the unit is actually faulty and prevent units from being returned unnecessarily. Check the Troubleshooting and Hints & Tips section at the back of the manual and/or check out any FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section on the website, which also shows the latest Hints, Tips and solutions. Please do not presume it is the unit that is causing the problem! Check that the equipment being used with it, is fully working and setup correctly. Check that all leads and the AC outlet are working. If you have an invalid output that you cannot exit from, a simple 'Engineering Reset' of the product may sort the problem out. To do this hold down programmable buttons 1 and 2 along with the suspend switch until the unit beeps. Engineering reset should only be used if the unit's settings give an invalid output that the user cannot exit from. All user-settings will be lost following an engineering reset. It is also worth insuring that the latest firmware is installed in the unit although bear in mind that user settings are lost during a firmware update. To return a unit for repair First contact your supplier, who will determine whether a return to factory is the appropriate solution. If deemed to be so then a return number will be issued. You should provide the following information for each unit : Product type Serial number of the faulty unit (this is on the underside of the unit) Full details of fault Invoice number (if available) Units should be returned via insured carrier or registered mail (thus allowing a trace to be made if goods are lost in transit), with carriage arranged at your own risk and expense. Goods in transit are the responsibility of the sender and the supplier will not be responsible for transit losses. Please clearly state the return number allocated on the outside packaging and on any accompanying documentation as this will speed up processing. 39 Problem solving If problems are experienced, please go through these help topics in order to resolve the problem. Otherwise, if you need to contact Technical Support, please have the following handy: Details of the problem. Whether the problem happens only at specific times or has only just started occurring (and what other things have changed at the same time). Firmware revision numbers - found in the first item of the System menu. If the problem is image related, use the 'Input parameters' menu to find out the number of lines, refresh rate and sync type being used. There is no picture on the Output. If the power LED on the unit is off or red and there is nothing displayed on the LCD, then insure that the AC power cord is connected properly and the power switch is on at the AC outlet. Press the standby button on the unit to turn it on. If the power on the unit is green and the LCD is displaying the correct text then check that the monitor output from the computer is connected at both the computer and the unit. Check that the output connector you are using from the unit is also connected at the unit and the display equipment. Check that the target video equipment is set to the correct line input if appropriate. Check that the device connected to the output is on and can support the resolution set in the Output image menu, ensuring that the Output image type (eg. RGBHV) is also set correctly. The image is shifted and not fully viewable There are several ways to correct this, depending on the actual problem. First adjust the output H/V shift value in the Output parameters menu until the white border that is displayed is centered on the scaler output. Next adjust the TL pos. adj. values in the Setup Program source menu until the incoming video signal is displayed correctly in the white-bordered box. You may also need to adjust the BR size adj. setting to insure the incoming video signal is properly displayed. The output resolutions no longer appear as expected. Because any changes made in the Image parameters menu are automatically stored, it may be that the resolution data has become altered beyond the parameters of a new piece of equipment. Either manually correct the resolution data, or restore the data to factory conditions by doing a Firmware Update. The user should avoid altering the Image parameter data unless absolutely necessary. 40 There is excessive flicker on the Output. Try using a different Flicker reduction mode. Turning the contrast down and the brightness up on the output device can have a large effect on flicker. Or try adjusting the brightness and contrast of the source input by selecting the Input adjust menu. The Output image is distorted. This may occur where some of the areas of the image are very dark and others are very bright. The solution is to adjust the contrast and brightness settings on your Output device to rectify the problem. Some colors appear to be incorrect on the CV/YC output First try altering the color, contrast and brightness settings on your TV or video display. These are usually set up for a very different reason than viewing computer graphics and may need changing to suit. If you cannot achieve exactly what you desire then alter the inputs levels (Sub menu...Setup Program source) until the correct colors are restored. How can I reduce color smearing on CV connections? Smearing usually occurs on Composite Video connections and is generally unavoidable - unless you can switch to using S-Video or RGB connections. It occurs because the brightness and color information is transmitted as one signal and the two parts have to be 'bandwidth-limited' to avoid them interfering with each other. I can no longer adjust the Output image resolution. When the unit is in Lock mode, the output resolution is fixed to be the same as the Lock source input resolution. During this time the Output image menu item is not adjustable. There is no picture on the preview output. Because the preview output is an unscaled output, insure that the connected output device is capable of showing the resolution on the currently selected preview input. Also note that if previewing a CV or YC source, you will need to connect to the CV Preview and not the RGB Preview. The picture on the video display is black and white. Insure that all the cables are correctly connected. If you are using a PAL TV to display the output then the unit may be providing resolution set to NTSC mode, or vice versa. The picture on the video display is green. The Output image type is probably set to YUV mode, whereas you are connecting to an RGB monitor. The RGB input is selected but the image is rolling or pink. Check the input setup and confirm that the input type and sync method is set correctly. This is often caused by having YUV input selected, instead of RGBHV. 41 Component / YUV input from DVD is not stable This may be due to the Macrovision protection system, which adds extra sync pulses and video peaks to the signal. Whilst this protection system is present on all outputs from a DVD player, the scaler's composite video (CV) and Y/C inputs are decoded by a chip that can ignore these pulses and peaks. However, the scaler's component / YUV input cannot, which results in either a very poor signal, or none at all. Since there is not a lot of benefit in using a component / YUV signal from a DVD over a Y/C signal (because of the video compression used), it is suggested that Y/C is used instead - this also allows many of the sharpness / colour adjustments to be used. 42 Connecter pinouts RGB HD-15 female connecter 5 1 10 15 6 11 Pin Use Pin Use 1 Red 0.7v max. / 75 Ohms 9 N/C 2 Green 0.7v max. / 75 Ohms 10 Ground 3 Blue 0.7v max. / 75 Ohms 11 Ground 4 N/C 12 N/C 5 Ground 13 Horizontal Sync TTL 6 Red ground 14 Vertical Sync TTL 7 Green ground 15 Reserved 8 Blue ground RS232 / D-9 male connecter 1 9 Pin Use Pin Use 1 N/C 6 N/C 2 RX (Receive data) 7 RTS (Request to send) 3 TX (Transmit data) 8 CTS (Clear to send) 4 N/C 9 N/C 5 GND (Signal Return) 43 4 pin mini-DIN S-video connecter (YC input) 4 1 3 2 S-Video socket Pin Use 1 Y (Luminance) 2 GND 3 GND 4 C (Chrominance) RGB / Component connections R G H V B R Y YUV B R Gs B S RGBHV V G RGBS U Cr Y YCrCb 44 RGsB Cb Pr Y YPbPr Pb Technical specifications RGB video inputs and output Voltage levels Sync types Sync on green / YUV sync RGBHV / RGBS sync Video signal impedance Horizontal frequency Vertical frequency 0.5 to 1.0 Vpp input, 0.7Vpp output RGBHV, RGBS, RGsB, YUV 0.3V to 1.0 Vpp input, 0.3Vpp output TTL pos. or neg. 75 Ohms 15kHz to 130kHz 43Hz to 150Hz Digital sampling 24 bit, 8 bits per color, 80MHz max.
