Analyzer(s) deactivated. Chapter 2 Analyzers Oxygen Analyzer (MB OX-SE-1) General The MB-OX-SE-1 has been designed to control the atmosphere of MBRAUN Systems for residual Oxygen content. The measuring range 0 - 1000 ppm is linear in the range of 0 - 100 ppm and over 100 ppm is only used to estimate the oxygen content of the inert gas. The semiconductor sensor made of Zirconiumdioxide is specific for oxygen, but because of the high sensor temperature and the cathalytic activity of the platinum coating of the sensor there are low cross-sensitivities for hydrogen as well as possible reactions with aggressive gaseous substances, that can reduce the operational life of the sensor. ! Caution! Operating the sensor at oxygen levels of >1000 ppm (e.g. in air) does not irreversibly damage the sensor element, but it should be avoided. If exposed to air, it will take several hours until the sensor will measure low oxygen levels correctly in Inert Gas. Construction The MB-OX-SE1 consists of the sensor and the special electronics separated by a gas-tight NW40 clampflange. The sensor is protected against physical damage by a protective cage. The sensor leads are connected to the electronics by vacuum-tight feedthroughs. The electronics are contained in a airtight box mounted directly to the back of the NW40 flange. The measuring electronics is operated by 24 VDC. It supplies a 0 to 10 VDC output proportional to the oxygen concentration. An additional input switches the heating element of the sensor on and off to control the temperature of the sensor. If this input is not used, an internal jumper has to be set to operate the probe. Electronics and Sensor Element have been factoy-calibrated with certified calibration gases; there are no user - accessible adjustment points. (Remark: On special request we may, on our decision, supply a calibration procedure that allows trained technicians to recalibrate the sensor sensitivity in the low range up to 100 ppm) Connector 5-pole socket ( LEMO ): Pin-Nr. Caution! Before applying electrical power the sensor should be exposed to clean inert atmosphere for at least 1 minute! The oxygen probe is mounted vacuum-tight on an appropriate NW40 flange by means of a centering ring and a clamp. The usual way is to use a NW40 t-piece in the gas flow piping. This will guarantee that the sensor is exposed to direct gas-flow and is not located in a dead space. The sensor only requires a low flow rate and is not flow sensitive up to flow rates of 2 m/s. The plug connection to the control unit must not be made before the whole box-system has been purged sufficiently with inert gas. The operation of the probe as well as the display of the measured values is performed by the control unit. Chapter 2 Analyzers Trouble-shooting The oxygen probe does not contain user-serviceable parts. Therefore in case of defects the probe has to be sent completely and unopened to M. Braun or the authorized representative. On request M. Braun may offer exchange probes. Description of malfunction What to do Check the plug connection and especially the electric After switching on the unit, the control unit continuously displays “< 1 ppm” whereas it is obvious that the power. In case the cord has only four leads, it may be that the probe is configurated for a five-lead cord. values is higher. In this case, disconnect the probe. Open the case carefully and plug-in a jumper (Standard PC-Jumper) in position 1 (near the edge oft the large DC-DC converter block). The display measuring value comes very slowly below 10 ppm, whereas it is shure that the real value is much lower (Check, whether this is really the case or the display is correct!) ! Caution! When you do this, the control-unit cannot switch off the sensor heating any more!! The sensor is still charged with oxygen by a previous operation at high oxygen concentrations or long storage in air. In this case oper-ate the sensor for some hours in clean inert atmosphere and it will come down. The sensor has a very stable zero-point, so before send-ing the probe for repair you must exclude the possibility that e.g. hydrogen in ppm-levels is present or was present in higher levels. Moisture Analyzer (MB MO-SE-1) General The MB-MO-SE1 has been designed to control the atmosphere of the MBRAUN Systems for residual moisture content. The measuring range is 0 to 500 ppmv, where the lower range up to 50 ppmv is linear and over 50 ppmv is only used to estimate the moisture content of the inert gas atmosphere. The sensor element is a “double helix” made of platinum wire fixed on a special insulation material. The sensor is coated with phosphoric acid that is totally dehydrated. Water molecules in the gas penetrate the acid layer and the electrolysis of the resulting H+ and OH- ions to H2 and O2 produces an electric current. So, the water molecules coming to the sensor surface are removed and the resulting current is depending on the concentration of the water molecules in the gas. This routine maintenance consists in cleaning the platinum winding of the MB MO-SE-1 and moistening it with phosphorous acid H3PO4. The following aids are required for disassembling and maintaining the MB MO-SE-1. Tool for disassembly (screwdriver) Soft, absorbent, lintfree cloth (cotton) Small quantity of phophorous acid H3PO4. Protective gloves and goggles One dummy plug for the open circulation piping (mostly DN40) Chapter 2 Analyzers ! ! Caution! Be cautious when handling phophorous acid. Do wear protective gloves and goggles. Any phosphorous acid getting in contact with your skin should immediately be rinsed off using running water. When getting in contact with your eyes, the acid should immediately be rinsed also using running water, afterwards you should immediately consult a doctor. Caution! Prior to any maintenance work the moisture measurement should be deactivated, i.e. the analyzer is switched off; refer to subchapter “Deactivating the analyser(s)”. Disconnect plug connector. Loosen clamp. Dummy plug. Thighten flange clamp. 17 18 Chapter 2 Analyzers Unscrew protective cover. Moisture sensor with distilled water. Carefully clean winding. Moisten winding with phosphorous acid. Remount protective cover. Chapter 2 Analyzers Remove clamp and dummy plug. Place measuring prove and clamp. Tighten clamp. Insert plug connector. Maintenance calibration ! Caution! We strongly recommend to make the cleaning maintenance procedure (cleaning) with the probe before starting a calibration. See Maintenance Document for MB-MO-SE1 for details! 19 20 Chapter 2 Analyzers Equipment needed for calibration: • Calibration flow cell: a small (approx. 50 ml) cylindrical metal chamber with a DN 40 KF - flange on one side to fit the sensor KF-40 flange; a gas inlet and a gas outlet preferably mounted on the side of the cylinder and not directly perpendicular to each other to avoid laminar flow in-side the chamber. All tubing and the chamber material must be stainless steel and with smooth surface. • Regulated power supply 24 VDC +- 0,1 VDC, 500 mA • Calibrated voltmeter 0 to 10 VDC • Sensor cable to fit the power supply and the voltmeter (see user manual of the probe!) • Pure argon gas of better 99.9999 grade • Calibration gas argon (better 99.9999 grade) with a mixture of 10 ppmv +- 2 ppmv moisture (vapor of water) with analysis certificate Procedure ! Caution! This procedure describes a recalibration only; original first calibration includes more parameters! Please observe: 1 ppmv of moisture corresponds to 20 mV output voltage of the probe. 1. The MB MO-SE-1 is fixed in a gas-calibration assembly and the calibration chamber is flushed with pure argon for at least 5 minutes at 20 to 50 liters/hour flowrate. 2. The sensor is connected to the power-supply and voltmeter; power is applied. 3. Pure argon is applied at a flowrate of 20 to 50 liters/hour for at least five hours or over night 4. The reading of the probe is recorded, it should be less 0.2 ppmv (i.e. 4 mV output voltage); if more, the offset pot is adjusted so that the reading is less 0.2 ppmv. 5. Calibration argon with a moisture content of about 10 ppmv is applied at a flowrate of 20 to 50 liters/hour for 1 hour. Then the spanpot is adjusted so that the reading is equivalent to the (certified) moisture content of the calibration argon (e.g. 9.9 ppmv should give a reading of 198 mV). 6. Pure argon is applied and the zero reading is recorded after 2 hours, it has to be less 0.5 ppmv; otherwise repeat from step 4. Other gas concentrations can be used, but the concentration should be less 40 ppmv due to the worse linearity of the sensors over 50 ppmv. Also “zero-gas” of a moisture concentration of some ppmv is acceptable when it is far away from the concentration of the calibration gas. The calibration cycle depends on the demand for accuracy as well as on the conditions of the gas to be measured (purity, spurious gases etc.). We recommend a maintenance (cleaning) proce-dure (see maintenance document for MB-OX-SE1) every 3 months, as the calibration parameters of a clean MB MO-SE-1 are very stable over years.
