Because oil is more reflective than water, the intensity of light reflected off of oil will be greater than that reflected off of the water surface. The LMD-2000 detects floating oil by sensing the difference in the intensity of reflected light. Compared with spotlight-based systems, this enables more reliable operation with water surface level fluctuations, and greater distance between the water surface and the detector.
